POPULARITY
Is a personal brand built on actions or results? This week pro athlete and coach Pepper Johnson shares the stories that have built his reputation and created a legacy of success. Join me and Pepper as we discuss the childhood story that sealed his identity as “Pepper” Johnson, how he created a reputation for intimidation and playing hard on the field, the coaching styles that inspired him to “earn his belts,” and what it's like to win the Super Bowl as a coach and a player. Pepper also explores how the business of football has changed for both athletes and coaches, as well as some key advice for coaches looking to advance their careers. About Pepper Johnson: Thomas "Pepper" Johnson is a retired NFL coach and NFL linebacker who played for 13 seasons in the NFL. He played the first seven years with the NY Giants where he won two Super Bowls. Pepper also played for the Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions, and the New York Jets. From an early age, Oshiomogho Atogwe focused on the micro-steps needed to continually grow and learn and constantly refine and improve his skills as a football player. And as Atomic Habit's author James Clear says, it's the ‘aggregation of marginal gains over time' that leads to long term lasting success. Little did Oshiomogho know it at the time, but he would go on to be one of the best high school players to ever come out of Windsor, Ontario and also go on to receive a scholarship at Stanford University and be a defensive standout on the team. This would lead him to be drafted in the 3rd round of the NFL draft by the St Louis Rams and play 8 years in the NFL. 5 years with the Rams, 2 years with the Redskins and then finish his career with the Philadelphia Eagles. In our discussion, Oshiomogho and I talk about his journey in the NFL and what it was he came to better understand about himself through this experience. He has always been guided by his faith and the deep spiritual framework that he puts into action in his life to honor the talents and strengths that he feels he has been given and the responsibility to give back to the world in special ways to serve others with the gifts that he has been blessed with. Oshiomogho believes that a great coach has the power to change a persons life and that it is a role that cannot be taken lightly. Using his own experiences as an example, he speaks about the impact that his high school coach Harry Lumley had in his life and the difference he made. As a college football player myself and being from the same hometown, Windsor Ontario, it was great to connect with Oshiomogho and have this discussion on my podcast. Wherever you are in the world listening to this, I hope you enjoy the conversation and share it with at least one person you feel with benefit from listening to it as well. About Oshiomogho Oshiomogho Isaac "O.J." Atogwe (born June 23, 1981) is a Canadian former professional American football free safety who served most recently as the secondary coach for the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football (AAF). He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He played college football at Stanford. Atogwe was also a member of the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles.

This week on It Was a Thing on TV we're honoring 'Merica with a look at the Presidents and some good ol fashioned American Football. First, we thought Lil' Bush would be a fair topic for a President's Day episode. Boy, were we wrong. For the most part, this aged like bad cheese. What seemed like a good idea in the 2000s ended up having a very short shelf life, running on one-note political gags from 15 years ago. We apologize in advance. Next, we continue the President's Day theme by looking at a commercial for an inaugural keepsake. There's something about a gold plated commemorative plate of Barack Obama which we find odd. Finally, there have been numerous attempts at football outside of the NFL season. None exist any longer. A recent attempt in 2019 was the Alliance of American Football (AAF), which we remember fondly. Listen as we blame the owner of Chico’s favorite hockey team for the demise of the league. More detailed notes below...
A kickoff designed to discourage touchbacks and increase the likelihood of a return: The ball will be kicked off from the 30-yard line, but the coverage and blocking teams will line up at the receiving team's 35- and 30-yard lines, respectively. Only the kicker and returner can move until the ball is caught, or three seconds after it hits the ground. A touchback will be spotted at the 35-yard line. Kicks out of bounds will go to the 45-yard line. Players can't leave the line of scrimmage on punts until after the kick. Any kicks that go into the end zone or out of bounds will be marked at the 35-yard line or wherever the ball went out of bounds, whichever is better for the receiving team. The idea is to discourage fair catches and "coffin corner" kicks, while providing more incentive to go for it on fourth down. Three options after scoring a touchdown: a 1-point play from the 2-yard line, a 2-point play from the 3-yard line or a 3-point play from the 10-yard line. There is no option to kick an extra point. A shootout-style overtime: Each team will get five single-play possessions from the 5-yard line. If the game is still tied at that point, the rotating possessions will continue until there is a winner. The XFL hopes that overtimes will be rare, in part because of the multiple options for points after touchdowns. A rule that allows two forward passes on one play, providing the first doesn't go past the line of scrimmage. The purpose is to encourage creative trick plays without the risk of losing possession of a lateral or backward pass, which is a live ball if it hits the ground. A requirement for only one foot to be in bounds for possession. XFL director of football operations Sam Schwartzstein said the change is easier to officiate quickly. It also is better for player safety, Schwartzstein said, because players take more unbraced falls while trying to place both feet in bounds. A total of nine officials on the field, one of whom will be dedicated solely to spotting the ball to minimize downtime between plays. XFL head of officiating Dean Blandino said most XFL officials have experience at the Division I college level. Blandino, the former NFL officiating chief, has been consulting with the XFL for more than a year. He performed a similar function for the Alliance of American Football (AAF) last spring. A video official who can intervene on significant non-reviewable plays when involving player safety, or on any calls inside of five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. There will also be booth-initiated reviews of traditionally reviewable plays using Hawk-Eye technology that ingests video directly from the broadcast truck. Allowing offensive linemen to be up to 2 yards downfield when a pass is thrown, with the hope of minimizing flags on run-pass option plays. A series of tweaks that the XFL hopes will cap game times at 2 hours, 45 minutes. (NFL games typically run about 3:06.) The tweaks include a running game clock that won't stop after incomplete passes or when players go out of bounds, except inside of two minutes in each half. Additionally, there will be a 10-minute halftime, two timeouts per team per half and no coin tosses. The home team will always make the choice to kick, receive or defer to start the game. The visitors will make that choice to start overtime.

GUESTS: Tim Murray & Pat Kasch In this episode, Paul welcomes a new guest and a returning guest. The King of Twitch, Pat Kasch and new guest Tim Murray help discuss the ongoing and upcoming things regarding American football. In the past, Paul has discussed association football (soccer), but now he's talking about good ol' American, gridiron football. Among the topics are the rise and fall of the Alliance of American Football (AAF), the upcoming XFL (and its original incarnation), the National Football League (NFL) on its own, and the entire world of American sports as the landscape may be going through changes. Sports is not Paul's bread and butter, but with the help of Tim and Pat, anyone can enjoy this discussion.
The first installment of our extensive view unto the intersection of technology and sports. Inside this episode is an eagle-eye, macro-scale overview of the relationship between sports and technology across the centuries and up to modern times. Also in this episode is a peer into the current largest intersections of tech and sport. Metaphorically, where do these two worlds collide and make baby worlds together? The realms of ‘sports science’, motor sports, social media, E-sports, and gambling are where, and are dissected. Recorded 3/5/19. Show notes/corrections: $250 billion dollars is greater than the sum of the world’s top professional sports leagues. WORLDWIDE. Forgot to add the global part. And since recording, the Alliance of American Football (AAF) has ceased football operations. More to come on the story of the AAF when more details emerge. It ceased operations rather quickly, like tech companies heedlessly do.

It's Time for the 42nd installment of #TBKoW. This episode starts off with a bang! The #GoodBrothers jump into the deep end while discussing the recently leaked/re-uploaded “Live” videos of rapper #CardiB where she admits to drugging men during her time as a stripper with the intention of stealing from them, under the guise of “surviving”. But was it really surviving? She also admitted to drugging and then influencing ex's into threesomes with transgendered individuals, in order to get them back. Still “surviving”? We then get into the recent retirement of The Notorious Conor #McGregor and the New York Post article claiming he is under investigation in Ireland regarding an alleged sexual assault. We breakdown the new UFC-ESPN partnership, that brings all future #UFC PPV's to the #ESPN+ platform, and how this might have negative effects on the rights of the fighters. We gush over newly released The Joked movie trailer. If you haven't seen it, get that hittah. We discuss the unfortunate events that occurred during the #WWE Hall of the Fame Ceremony, where a #StupidIdiot ran into the #WWEHOF ring and tackled Bret Hart. Bret Hart is a cancer and stroke survivor (basically an actually #survivor). He is the Mayor of Calgary. He deserves better. Shout out to all the #boys and #girls that jumped into the squared circle to wrangle this idiot. And from here it becomes a rapid fire of topics. We delve into the “Suspension” of the Alliance of American Football (#AAF) and what lead to their demise, discuss whether or not Burger King's new #ImpossibleWhooper will be a viable option to customers, look into the long awaited price cuts at #WholeFoods, warn people of the perils of not verifying your #Uber driver before getting into their car (SPOILER ALERT: #MURDER), and finally hand-out rare shout-outs to a Bleacher Report article about the dichotomy between Aaron Rodgers and former Green Bay HC Mike McCarthy and to the Tampa Bay Lightning for their historic season. Oh, and it wouldn't be a proper episode without having a little #FUSegment for Uncle Boobah's favorite politician, Miss #AOC. He also throws shade at Alyssa Milano and the Country of Brunei as they have now made it legal to stone gays and adulterers to death. Football player development is the topic in this edition of Schooled with the Professor. The Alliance of American Football (AAF) is heading into its third week of action. The XFL is preparing for a launch in 2020. But a third league is in the works that should be very interesting. The Pacific Pro Football League is preparing to develop young football players and get them ready for the NFL. It’s founder, Don Yee, joins us to explain. This isn’t a league that is competing against the NFL. It’s a league designed to develop future NFL players. I’ve known Don for three decades as an agent. He represents Tom Brady and has represented some of the top football players in those three decades. Don gives great detail in how this league will work: Starting in 2020, a four-team league will be formed, based in Southern California. Teams will have approximately 40 players and will be paid around $50,000 for a two-month schedule. Colleges have been a feeder system for the NFL but the college game has drifted away from what the NFL does. Most college offenses don’t have fullbacks. The PPFL will have fullbacks. Quarterbacks will take snaps from the huddle and will get NFL offensive coaching. It’s been successful in lining up sponsors and experts. As everyone knows, developmental leagues are important for the future of the NFL.
Burn & Hos are back, talking all things Alliance of American Football #AAF. They recap the Week 2 games, have an open and honest discussion of the league's sky cam and debut their first power rankings of the season. Burn reveals her forbidden #AAF crush and we learn she totally spaced the no-look big play of the weekend.
Ep VIII: The Foos kick it off by talking about the new spring football league, the Alliance of American Football (AAF), that will be separate from the NFL and will draft out of college as well. He then goes to explain the rules that differ from the NFL and how this might entice football fans to watch as well as what known players and officials that we are already familiar with would be a part of it, too.
