ESB has opened its latest major battery plant at its Aghada site in Co Cork, which will add 150MW (300MWh) of fast-acting energy storage to help provide grid stability and deliver more renewable power to Ireland's electricity system. This battery energy storage system (BESS) project is the latest in ESB's pipeline of projects delivered at sites in Dublin and Cork, which are part of its investment of up to €300m in the technology. In 2022, ESB launched the first of its BESS sites, the 19MW (38MWh) project - also in Aghada. Earlier in 2024, a new 75MW (150MWh) project was opened at ESB's Poolbeg Energy Hub in Dublin. ESB has partnered with Fluence - a global leader in energy storage products, services and software - as well as Irish company Powercomm Group to deliver this project. EU Commissioner-designate for Democracy, Justice and Rule of Law, Michael McGrath, commented: "I am delighted to be here in Aghada again for the launch of ESB's latest battery storage project. Through the delivery of projects like this, which will facilitate more renewable sources of energy onto the electricity system, it is clear that ESB's relationship with Co Cork will continue into the future. This technology, delivered by ESB and their partners, can play an important role in achieving climate targets both in Ireland and at European level in the pursuit of net zero carbon emissions". Paddy Hayes, ESB Chief Executive, outlined how the project will support ESB's Net Zero by 2040 carbon emissions target: "ESB's Aghada site in Cork has been a key part of the progressive development of the Irish electricity system for over 40 years - and the launch of ESB's largest battery storage project so far is another significant milestone. These batteries support energy security, reduce peak prices and help to maximise the benefit of renewables. This is the latest of ESB's 'Invested in Ireland' projects, with over €300 million recently invested in storage and security, supporting Ireland's National Development and Climate Action plans." These high-capacity batteries can store excess renewable energy for discharge when required, and in doing so, help to support Ireland in reaching its ambitious climate targets by 2030 and ESB in achieving its Net Zero by 2040 strategy.
Over 100 graduates from Irish and international third-level institutions, spanning the fields of engineering, IT, HR, commercial, marketing and finance, have commenced ESB's tailored development programme which offers each graduate the opportunity to gain experience by working on challenging assignments and major projects that offer exposure to the varied businesses of the organisation. ESB's Graduate Development Programme forms part of an ambitious drive by the company to recruit talent from third-level institutions across the island of Ireland, and internationally, to support the delivery of its Net Zero by 2040 strategy. This year's intake is the largest number of graduates ESB has recruited to date and includes a record 73 graduate engineers. On average, one third of engineering interns return to ESB to take up graduate positions following their successful completion of the Internship Programme. Graduates were welcomed to the organisation by Paddy Hayes, ESB Chief Executive and Tom McMahon, Capability Development and Resourcing Manager at their recent induction. Throughout the duration of the programme each graduate will receive a range of supports including being partnered with individual mentors from within their chosen business unit, IT equipment and access to allow hybrid working as part of ESB's smart working offering. Sinéad Kilkelly, ESB's Executive Director, People & Organisation Development, said: "At ESB, fostering both professional growth and personal development is at the core of our graduate programme. As we look towards realising our Net Zero by 2040 target, we recognise the immense possibilities that lie ahead for our graduates, both as individuals and as a group. Throughout their journeys at ESB, we look forward to working with them and extend our best wishes as they embark on their careers." Recruitment for our 2025 Graduate Development Programme will open on 23rd September and ESB is inviting applications from all final-year and post-graduate students. Recruitment for ESB's engineering internship programme is currently open to applicants for 2025. Applications can be made via the ESB website: www.esb.ie/careers See more stories here.
Peace with God Through Faith 1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. 6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Thousands of primary school children from all over Ireland will take part in the RDS Foundation's flagship Science and Technology programme, ESB Science Blast, in Dublin this week. Running from 4th to 7th March, over 500 projects will investigate the science behind a simple question, with strong themes emerging this year around climate change, biodiversity and the impact of fast fashion on the planet. Taking place at RDS Simmonscourt over four days, ESB Science Blast includes a lá speisialta do Ghaelscoileanna agus do scoileanna Ghaeltachta on 7ú Márta. Following the Dublin dates, ESB Science Blast will also take place in Limerick from 21st - 23rd May and in Belfast on 4th June 2024, with a closing date of 15th March for Limerick and 15th April for the Belfast event. Last month RDS research revealed overwhelming support from primary school teachers for ESB Science Blast, with over 98% who participated in 2023 saying it 'increased student's confidence and knowledge in STEM', while 96% felt that taking part 'enhanced the science and maths curriculum in the classroom.' Niamh De Loughry, Deputy Chief Executive of the RDS Foundation, warmly welcomed the research findings. "It's wonderful to see this endorsement for our key Science and Technology Programme from those most closely involved in it - primary school teachers across the country. In developing ESB Science Blast we wanted an event that would be informative, inclusive and, above all, a really fun and engaging learning experience and these results show that it's delivering where it matters most - in the classroom. "I'm delighted that we'll welcome an even split of repeat attenders and 'first timer' primary schools to the RDS this week, with over a quarter of all Gaelscoileanna taking part in the dedicated day for Irish speaking schools on Thursday." Paddy Hayes, Chief Executive of ESB, added: "Every year ESB Science Blast brings STEM learning to schools in communities across Ireland and ESB is proud to work with the RDS on this unique initiative. Through the programme, children of all backgrounds and abilities are developing life skills that will help them to become innovative and creative problem solvers, as well as active, informed and engaged citizens. I look forward to seeing the energy, the excitement, and the celebration of curiosity at ESB Science Blast 2024." Olive Walsh, Principal of Glasnevin Primary School, said: "This will be my sixth time taking part in ESB Science Blast and every year it brings a fantastic level of fun and excitement into the classroom. Because the whole class is involved it encourages real teamwork and collaboration and the children take huge pride in their research and in showcasing their findings. But, above all, it really makes them see how relevant science is to their everyday lives." One of the largest science education programmes of its kind, ESB Science Blast is a free and hands-on way to engage young learners with STEM, specifically designed for primary school and funded by the RDS Foundation through its Science and Technology Programme. It involves the whole class investigating the science behind a simple question and then showcasing their work at one of three annual events in Dublin, Limerick and Belfast. Ardú mór tagtha ar bhrabús an Ghrúpa ESB. Between January and the end of June, the Electricity Supply Board Group - or ESB - made a big profit, according to their latest published results. Idir mí Eanáir agus deireadh mhí an Mheithimh, rinne Grúpa Bhord Soláthair an Leictreachais - nó an ESB - brabús mór, de réir na dtorthaí is deireanaí atá foilsithe acu. They earned €390 million in post-tax profit in the first half of this year, while energy bills were rising across Europe. €390 milliún de bhrabús iarchánach a thuill siad sa gcéad leath den bhliain seo, fad is a bhí arduithe móra ag teacht ar bhillí fuinnimh ar fud na hEorpa. During the same period last year, they earned €128 million in post-tax profit. Le linn na tréimhse céanna anuraidh, €128 milliún a bhí tuillte acu mar bhrabús iarchánach. They had revenues of €3.7bn in the first half of 2022, compared to €2.2bn during the same period last year. Bhí ioncam de €3.7bn acu sa gcéad leath de 2022, i gcomparáid le €2.2bn le linn na tréimhse céanna anuraidh. The Chief Executive of the ESB Group, Paddy Hayes, said that the company will now be able to make a significant investment in energy infrastructure, given this profit. Dúirt Príomhfheidhmeannach an Ghrúpa ESB, Paddy Hayes, go mbeidh sé d'acmhainn anois ag an gcomhlacht infheistíocht shuntasach a dhéanamh in infreastruchtúr fuinnimh, i bhfianaise an bhrabúis seo. He said that due to the fact that it is a state company, their profits are always reinvested in the company itself. Dúirt sé gur de thairbhe gur comhlacht stáit é, go ndéantar a gcuid brabús a athinfheistiú i gcónaí sa gcomhlacht é féin. He indicated that he understands that there is a rise in energy bills for consumers and businesses, but that these increases are related to the increase in wholesale energy prices on the international markets, for gas in particular. Thug sé le fios go dtuigeann sé go bhfuil ardú ag teacht ar bhillí fuinnimh tomhaltóirí agus gnónna, ach go mbaineann na harduithe sin leis an méadú atá tagtha ar phraghsanna mórdhíola fuinnimh ar na margaí idirnáisiúnta, ar ghás ach go háirithe.

SPY Historian Vince Houghton sat down with Paddy Hayes to discuss his book Queen of Spies: Daphne Park, Britain's Cold War Spy Master. Hayes recounts the fascinating story of the evolution of the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) from World War II to the Cold War through the eyes of Daphne Park, one of its outstanding and most unusual operatives. He gives one of the most intimate narratives yet of how the modern SIS actually went about its business whether in Moscow, Hanoi, or the Congo, and shows how Park was able to rise through the ranks of a field that had been comprised almost entirely of men. Queen of Spies captures all the paranoia, isolation, deception of Cold War intelligence work, and combines it with the personal story of one extraordinary woman trying to navigate this secretive world.
February 29, 2016 - Our time machine for this trip is tricked out like James Bond's Aston Martin, and we're speeding back to the height of the Cold War. Our driver on this journey is Paddy Hayes, who was kind enough to call into the show from Dublin, Ireland. His book is Queen of Spies: Daphne Park, Britain's Cold War Spy Master. Until this book, no biography has been written about Daphne Park's incredible contributions to the crown at a time when the intelligence services were still very closed to women. From helping prepare for the D-Day landings to shoring up the Falkland Islands' defense, her adventures included being thrown into a pit, swimming the chilly Volga River to escape the KGB, and threats of execution. "I must have been arrested and condemned to be shot several times," she said. "It was a hazard that I got used to." Daphne Park was Britain’s top woman spy, the most senior lady in MI6, a spitfire who people said once met, was never forgotten.
