It's the hottest sector in the global energy industry right now, driven by rising power demand, the need to back up variable renewable generation, and escalating threats to grid resilience. It is of course, battery storage. Host Ed Crooks and regular guest Amy Myers Jaffe speak with Julian Nebreda, CEO of energy storage systems company Fluence, about why batteries are becoming essential grid infrastructure. At peak hours during the bitterly cold weather that has covered much of North America in recent weeks, batteries accounted for about 1% of US power supply. But even a relatively small share of battery capacity can play an outsized role in preventing outages, Julian says. He argues that batteries are best understood not as replacements for fossil fuels, but as system optimizers: delivering fast-response capacity, stabilizing grids, and allowing generation assets to run more efficiently. With Amy and Ed, he addresses some of the common myths around batteries' cold-weather performance, multi-peak demand days and reliability compared with traditional generation. The gang explores the next wave of demand growth for batteries, particularly from new data centres for AI. Julian points to “speed to power” as a major new driver for storage deployment, as the hyperscalers and other tech companie try to bring new data centre capacity online as quickly as they can. There discussion also covers the geopolitical significance of storage, the attempt to build a battery supply chain in the US, the strngths of distributed versus centralised system designs, and examples of operations from Texas to Ukraine. As Amy notes, the industry is still catching up to the full potential of storage, but the potential is enormous.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In 2008, Fluence installed one of the first lithium-ion battery systems ever connected to the U.S. grid. Back then, the idea of a domestic battery supply chain felt distant—almost theoretical. Today, it's real.John Zahurancik, now President of Fluence Americas, has spent nearly two decades pushing the storage industry from “interesting pilot projects” to critical grid infrastructure. The last time he was on SunCast, he said domestic content would happen. This year, Fluence started shipping it.In this episode, John breaks down how storage has quietly become the backbone of the power system—independent of renewables—and why the next wave of deployments will be bigger, faster, and more strategically important than anything we've seen.We dig into:

In this episode, I speak with Karen Sprinkel Ancelet about her path to integrating trauma-informed, psychedelic-assisted therapy into her clinical practice. Karen shares how, early in her career, she worked with families whose loved ones had been murdered by a serial killer. She found that the models she had been trained in were not enough to address the profound spiritual trauma her clients experienced as they struggled to make sense of such horrific loss. This realization led Karen to begin practicing Buddhism and eventually to live in Asia, where she deepened her understanding of human suffering. While working with people from Thailand and Tibet who had endured trauma, she witnessed how cultural perspectives shape the ways we make meaning out of tragedy and resilience. She also facilitated group therapy for child sexual abuse survivors, where she discovered that while some approaches were effective for certain individuals, they were not universally helpful. From these experiences, Karen came to conceptualize trauma as impacting the mind, body, and spirit, all of which must be addressed in healing. She describes her initial skepticism toward psychedelic therapies, coming from a place of purism, but shares how her perspective shifted as she learned more about their effectiveness. Immersing herself in advanced training and certification, Karen began working with clients using psychedelics in therapeutic contexts. Karen also discusses the breadth of her training across multiple trauma-healing approaches. She highlights Somatic modalities such as Somatic Experiencing, Hakomi, and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy; Desensitization-based methods like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Brainspotting; and Parts models including Internal Family Systems (IFS), Voice Dialogue, and Ego State Therapy. She explains how client factors often determine which approach is the best fit for a given individual. Throughout our conversation, Karen emphasizes her commitment to helping clients heal from PTSD as efficiently as possible. This integrative vision inspired her book, The Thriving Self: A New Paradigm for Healing the Mind, Body and Spirit and Moving Beyond It, which offers clients a framework to move toward healing without spending years in therapy. Karen Sprinkel Ancelet, LMFT is a licensed psychotherapist with more than 30 years of clinical experience, practicing in California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and Michigan. She specializes in trauma-informed care and integrates a broad range of evidence-based modalities, including EMDR, Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems (Level 3), and HeartMath. Karen is also a Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) provider with advanced psychedelic training through MAPS, Fluence, and Three Cups. She graduated with a Certificate in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies and Research from CIIS. In addition to her clinical practice, she serves as a consultant, educator, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and Continuing Education provider. A pivotal chapter in Karen's life was her time living in Asia, where she conducted her master's research on trauma healing following violent crimes in Tibet, Southeast Asia, and the United States. Deeply impacted by these findings, she returned to Asia for several years to further her exploration. Today, Karen weaves together the ancient wisdom of meditation and mindfulness with contemporary approaches such as EMDR, Brainspotting, Flash, EFT, IFS, and Somatic Experiencing to guide and support her clients in their healing journey.

Tom Trowbridge is an advocate for decentralized systems. Tom is a co-founder of Fluence Labs, and Hedera Hashgraph (HBAR) where he was President from Inception. He co-founded Fluence Labs in 2019 to revolutionize cloud computing by offering decentralized, serverless solutions that reduce reliance on traditional providers like AWS. Why you should listen Fluence Network is an open, decentralized platform designed to revolutionize how applications and services operate on the internet. It provides a peer-to-peer network that enables developers to build, deploy, and scale decentralized applications (dApps) without the need for centralized infrastructure. Unlike traditional cloud-based solutions, Fluence leverages a network of independent nodes to provide computation and storage, making it highly resilient, secure, and censorship-resistant. At its core, Fluence is built on Aqua, a unique programming language tailored for distributed systems. Aqua allows developers to write composable, modular workflows that seamlessly interact with multiple services across the network. This design enables the creation of sophisticated dApps that can interact with various APIs, blockchain protocols, and traditional systems. Aqua's ability to orchestrate services on decentralized infrastructure removes reliance on centralized servers, making applications more robust and transparent. The network itself is powered by a decentralized marketplace of computing resources. Node operators provide storage and computational power to the network and are compensated through Fluence's native economic model. This incentivizes participants to maintain the network's efficiency and reliability. Developers, in turn, benefit from flexible pricing and the ability to scale their applications as demand grows without locking themselves into proprietary ecosystems or platforms. Fluence distinguishes itself through its emphasis on composability and collaboration. The platform enables developers to share and reuse application components, fostering a community-driven ecosystem of reusable modules and services. This not only accelerates development but also reduces duplication of effort, making the network an efficient environment for innovation. The open-source nature of Fluence further aligns with its goal of democratizing access to decentralized computing resources. A significant application of Fluence is in Web3, where it acts as a critical infrastructure layer for decentralized finance (DeFi), NFTs, and other blockchain-powered services. By integrating seamlessly with blockchain networks, Fluence can provide scalable, off-chain computation that complements the strengths of on-chain operations. This hybrid approach opens up new possibilities for complex dApps that require high-performance computing alongside blockchain security and transparency. Fluence Network represents a shift toward a more open and decentralized internet. It empowers developers to build applications that prioritize user autonomy, data privacy, and resistance to censorship. With its innovative technology and community-first ethos, Fluence is poised to become a foundational layer for the next generation of the internet. In this episode, Joe interviews Ingmar Gorman, Ph.D.: clinical psychologist and co-founder and CEO of Fluence, a psychedelic education company. Gorman served as a co-principal investigator and study therapist on MAPS' Phase II and III clinical trials for MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD, and works with drug sponsors: training, developing the components for clinical trials, and designing therapy manuals. With his insider's perspective, he discusses the reasons why he believes the FDA rejected MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD: from ICER's 2.1 section of the report giving legitimacy to allegations they don't have the authority to research, to Lykos not being able to defend some accusations due to confidentiality, to the damage caused over time (which likely influenced the decision) from attacks against Lykos from dissenters. He discusses: How, despite abuse claims, the main allegations in the report were actually about the mishandling of data or influence of investigators on participants The complications of needing to follow study frameworks: Should your adverse experience be in the report if it happened outside the study window? How easily opposition can attack and demonize a faceless company, while forgetting the humanity of the people behind it Inner healing intelligence and the proposition that people have been indoctrinated into this concept by MAPS The need for journalists to research more and not just jump on a narrative and more! After the shocking decision of an advisory committee recommendation that the FDA reject MDMA as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, I wanted to speak to someone who understands the difference between clinical trials and private practice. Dr. Jennifer Tippett is a licensed clinical psychologist and Director of Psychotherapeutic Development at atai Life Sciences, where she creates therapeutic protocols and provides facilitator training for psychedelic clinical trials. On the show, we start with Jennifer's experience in forensic psychology. Then we discuss the difference between industry trials, academic trials, and private practice. We talk about making novel psychedelics, and if it is possible, or desired, to make a psychedelic that doesn't have the trip. We also discussed equity and access, including both cultural and financial barriers to psychedelic healing. Jennifer has spent a lot of time considering how one might create a sustainable business model for psychedelic therapy, especially looking at what has been going on in Oregon. As an employee of atai Life Sciences, which is a publicly traded company, Jennifer responds to some criticisms of for-profit psychedelic companies. And finally, we end with her response to the recent FDA advisory finding against using MDMA for post-traumatic stress disorder. Jennifer previously directed the Substance Use Disorder Specialty Program at the University of Denver, focusing on addiction and the neurobiology of trauma. Her early career involved working with incarcerated individuals and those with severe mental illness, inspiring her to explore innovative mental health care, including psychedelic medicine. Dr. Tippett studied psychedelics through shamanistic traditions and obtained certifications from Fluence, Polaris, MAPS, and the Integrated Psychiatry Institute. She is also a Level 1 Internal Family Systems provider, dedicated to integrating psychedelics with evidence-based therapies. In her private practice she supports clients with psychedelic integration. The views and opinions expressed by Jennifer in this episode are her own and do not necessarily represent those of atai Life Sciences. Welcome to another episode of Category Visionaries — the show that explores GTM stories from tech's most innovative B2B founders. In today's episode, we're speaking with Tom Trowbridge, Co-Founder of Fluence Labs, a Web3 native computing platform that has raised $9 Million in funding. Here are the most interesting points from our conversation: Addressing Monopolistic Behavior: Fluence Labs aims to counter the monopolistic nature of cloud providers by creating a decentralized, peer-to-peer computing platform that reduces reliance on centralized infrastructure. Solving Central Points of Failure: By distributing computation across multiple nodes globally, Fluence enhances resilience and reduces the risk of service disruptions due to single points of failure. Combating Government Influence: The platform is designed to reduce government control and surveillance over digital infrastructure by decentralizing data and compute operations. Advanced Peer-to-Peer Compute: Fluence offers a peer-to-peer compute network where operations can be performed at multiple locations, improving efficiency and reducing costs. Economic Layer Development: The upcoming economic layer will enable compensation for hosts running computations and for developers creating software, fostering a thriving ecosystem. Composability with Aqua Language: Fluence's Aqua language simplifies building peer-to-peer applications, allowing developers to assemble applications from pre-existing modules, similar to the Defi ecosystem. // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co
For those proponents of psychedelic-assisted therapy concerned that demand for therapists will outstrip supply in the coming years, you may be reassured by today's conversation with Dr. Ingmar Gorman and Dr. Elizabeth Nielson, psychologists who have been involved in FDA-approved clinical trials of MDMA and psilocybin, and the co-founders of a company called Fluence Training which is working to scale education for this purpose. As they explain to host Shiv Gaglani, they see their task, broadly speaking, as serving three categories of people: those with general interest in the field; all types of clinicians who want to be able to have informed conversations with patients wishing to discuss their current and/or future use; and those who want to become therapists in this modality. Fluence is especially well-positioned for that last group because of Gorman's and Nielson's involvement in designing therapy protocols in clinical trials, but also because of their work developing therapy manuals for drug companies. “If and when their drugs go to market, we'll be able to train clinicians in the community who will be working with those compounds,” says Gorman. One bottom line message in this richly-informed discussion is that the field needs all comers and they hope people aren't dissuaded by misconceptions about what's required. “We hear all the time, 'I want to be involved, but I'd have to go back to school and get all these years of clinical experience' when the reality is there's just so many ways now to get involved,” says Nielson. This is a great overview of the status of training, the potential pitfalls awaiting the field, the importance of managing patient expectations, and much more.Mentioned in this episode: https://www.fluencetraining.com/
