How many times have you gotten to the meeting but your pitch fell flat? You went in guns blazing, thinking the hard part was over and you'd land the deal—but instead you face-planted. It's not your product or your pricing. It's your messaging that's failing you—and blocking you from a sale. A Framework to Tap Into Your Prospect's Pain So what's missing? A framework that actually speaks to your prospect's pain, builds urgency, and moves them toward a ‘yes.' As The Sales Gravy Podcast guest Mike Malloy points out, the PASTOR messaging method can solve that disconnect. You tap into your customer's pain points and you close. The PASTOR Method Created by renowned copywriter Ray Edwards, the word “PASTOR' is about guiding your prospect through the process with messaging that grabs attention and prompts action. As a salesperson, you lead your potential client toward a solution. True sales relationships aren't forced—it's natural and authentic. You're not stereotypically pushy or desperate. You have the magic answer to a customer's problem. Think of it like leading a prospect down a sales path where they see the problem clearly, understand the solution, and feel confident saying ‘YES' to a deal. P - Problem & Pain An eventual ‘Yes' stems from pain—pain from stalled business, lost revenue, or missed quotas. Until you unearth the problem, there's no need for you or your solution. Translation: No sale. Your job is to identify the pain point and get your prospect to acknowledge that, yeah, it's ruining their business, too. Don't gloss over the pain—lean into it. Show you understand. Your understanding will connect with the customer and start building your relationship—a relationship that leads to closing. A - Amplify the Consequences Don't be afraid to twist the knife. This isn't just a little problem. It's debilitating. It's costing the customer time and money. It's a huge pain point. What will the prospect's life be next quarter, next year, if they don't solve it this minute? How much worse will it get? Fear of loss is a powerful motivator. Prospects need to feel the urgency to fix the problem now. S - Story, Solution, System This is where you offer the solution—but don't just drop a pitch. Tell a story. Give your prospect an example that they can hold on to and that helps them connect. Tom's sales team was floundering. They couldn't make quota. Then they found our [your service]. Jill's company needed a new distributor. Her current distributor was often late, goods were damaged and it was hurting her bottom line. Then she learned about [your service]. Make it clear that hiring you isn't just smart—it's the game-changer they've been looking for. Show them you get it. Lay out a clear, systematic solution that wipes out their pain—once they see you've got the answer, the deal's as good as closed. T - Transformation & Testimony And what does it look like when all that pain goes away? Paint the picture. You highlighted all the real and future pain not hiring you would cause. Now, tell your prospect what life will be like after they embrace your solution. People don't buy products—they buy results. They need to see exactly how they'll save time, make money, and come out ahead. Show them the win, and they'll say yes. This is also where you leverage testimonials to build credibility. Personal accounts from past customers who can bolster your position. When they believe others have succeeded, they'll trust they can too. They'll be signing with you before you know it. O - Offer Your offer isn't just about price—it's about making the value so clear that saying 'no' feels like a mistake. Remove any friction to the deal by emphasizing the ease of transition and fast onboarding. Your offer needs to entice with solid, actionable steps to cutting out their pain points. There's no room for waffling here. Outline the ROI clearly and make it simple, easy,

This episode is a blend of true crime and criminal ineptitude. We'll walk through the story of how a gaggle of NYC barflys in the early 20th century U.S. Prohibition Era conspired (very badly) to murder an Irish immigrant who would later be nicknamed "The Irish Rasputin" for his incredible survival of multiple attempts on his life. In New York City in 1933, during both the Great Depression and the Prohibition Era, a group of guys - Tony Marino, Daniel Kriesberg, Francis Pasqua, and Joseph Murphy - hatched a plot to kill Michael Malloy, a regular at the speakeasy that Marino owned, and collect on a few insurance policies that they were going to take out on him. After several failed attempts, they enlisted the help of Tough Tony Bastone and his sidekick Joseph Maglione, and later one even cab driver Harry Green and local doctor, Dr. Frank Manzella. It would seem that it was impossible to kill Iron Mike, as he came to be known.Sources for this episode:Wikipedia - New York Cityall that's interesting - The Curious Case of Michael Malloy - "Rasputin Of The Bronx"Smithsonian Magazine - The Man Who Wouldn't DieDrinking Cup - The legend of Mike Malloy and the Murder TrustTrivia Library - New York Gangs Murder Trust and Michael Malloy Parts 1-5Irish Central - Michael Malloy - the Irishman in The Bronx that could not be murderedThe True Crime Edition - The Murder Plot of "Iron" Mike MalloySupport the show

What do you get when you combine the worst friends in the world with a man who refuses to die? You get the first story in a new series where we take a look at stories that seem legendary, but are actually true. In this premier episode, we look at the story of "Durable" Mike Malloy and his friends multiple attempts to "accidently" kill him for insurance money.
During the height of prohibition, many enterprising people found different ways to make money- some opened secret bars, some committed life insurance fraud. Mike Malloy, a homeless immigrant and alcoholic was the target of one of these schemes (well, both, technically) but there was a wrinkle in the plan: Mike simply wouldn't die. email us at trrpod@gmail.com Follow us on twitter! @podcastTRR Follow us on instagram! @trrpod Find us on facebook! During the height of the Great Depression in New York City, speakeasy owner Tony Marino and his friends were desperate for cash. They needed quick money and decided that the best bet was to commit life insurance fraud. Mike Malloy seemed like the easiest target. He had no family or friends, no consistent job, no home, and was by all accounts a severe alcoholic. Tony and his thugs hatched a plan for Mike to drink himself to death, but they would slowly learn how shockingly resilient Mike was. The great depression was one of the most challenging times in history. The financial uncertainty of the time led many to nefarious forms of income. Unfortunately for Mike Malloy, others looked to more extreme measures. Over a few months in early 1933, a group of five directed by Tony Marino repeatedly attempted to kill Malloy to claim a significant life insurance policy they had taken out on him. The group didn't anticipate just how difficult it would be to kill Mike. Night after night, the group concocted increasingly gruesome plans; however, without any clear explanation, Mike survived. Eventually, the group was successful at its goal. But the success wouldn't last long as the group failed to keep quiet and faced the music.

Depression-era New York was a tough time for a guy just looking to get by. The pressure of feeding a family, the lack of available work, the poor conditions suffered from much of the work that was available and at the end of the day, you couldn't even relax with a drink or drown your sorrows in the bottom of a bottle. At least, not legally. Whilst laws attempted to stop people from drinking alcohol, the culture of the speakeasy ripped through the underground. It was a place where one could relax and unwind, listen to some live music, play some cards, or set up an insurance fraud with a few of the friendly locals. It was the latter that took place in a small dive in The Bronx over several months in 1933 that would highlight how desperate the times could really be. It would also prove to be one of the most catastrophic displays of disorganised crime that the 19th-century newspapers would ever write about in what was dubbed as New York's “most fantastic” murder. I really over-extended myself last week and weekend, to the point where I really don't have a show in me today. Honestly, I went back to sleep after recording today's What's News, and only awoke two hours before showtime. I'm still not fully lucid. So instead of replaying something recent, I went back into the archives 10 years for an interview with the prophetic Mike Malloy. The date was May 16, 2012, and he did a decent job of predicting where we are now.
