101: Leveraging Your Emotional Landscape to Figure Out Who You Really Are

An Interview with Melissa Llarena

I've come to realize that while the central themes of this podcast have been creativity, courage, and curiosity, the deepest core of this is our identity. Today, I'll be covering how some of my guests have uncovered their truest identities, whether you can truly change your identity, and what this whole identity crisis and searching is really all about.  You'll be hearing 10 excerpts from my last 100 episodes that I carefully curated because they've meant something to me, and I surmise, they can change the way you think about getting to know yourself. When it comes to our personal evolutions of who we are, I have noticed three types of moments that truly make an impact on our identities.  The first type is how traumatic experiences can put our identities in question. Such as Cepee Tabibian, Co-Founder of She Hit Refresh, who lost her two parents back-to-back and decided to leave a good Texan life for a great Spanish existence (Episode 45), and Marshall Dun, who after losing his brother to suicide, he learned how to trust himself and detach his identity from the allure of external desires and riches to become a spiritual leader. (Episode 60). The second type is those expansive moments that stretch our identities. For instance, Raphael Rowe leveraged the world of media and journalists to help him clear his name so he could eventually become a journalist himself for the BBC and on the Netflix series Inside the World's Toughest Prisons (Episode 89). The James Beard Award Recipient, Gabriele Corcos, also stretched his identity when he started out as a percussionist, then decided to become an entrepreneur, then farmer, and eventually, a politician (Episode 47). The third type is those rising moments such as when World Rugby Hall of Famer Phaidra Knight felt this push to greatness from her family, she decided to rise up to the challenge – including the challenge of expectations (Episode 17). Also, when I interviewed James Altucher back in Episodes 5 & 6, I knew I had to rise up to the occasion if I wanted to become a podcaster and interview my first multimillionaire. So I had to step up to the plate and figure it out.  You can be told to be someone by everyone and you can perform for everyone else's claps. However, ultimately, it is not until you decide to learn about what you want, and who you want to be that you will begin to truly live your life. It's that journey, which many of us avoid taking, that we can ever become who we were meant to be. You cannot watch someone else on their journey and expect to get to know yourself and change. You just have to be willing to take meaningful steps in your own evolution and feel every emotion that comes your way. My plan is to delve into these emotions next. So what emotions would you like me to feature in my next 100-podcasts? Any ones that have been a struggle? I want to hear from you! And, if you want to learn more about my Courage Makerspace online mastermind program and how it can help you boost your courage, I'm only a DM or email (Melissa[@]melissallarena.com) away.  Highlights Jonathan Arons, Episode 4 Music: You will surely get to know yourself when you are pissed off. Jonathan Arons uncovered that music was his muse and he was able to leverage his sensitivities as a child in order to find the courage to be who he has become today. Art or music is all about feeling. It's the most universal way to connect with anybody from any walk of life.  David Roberts, Episode 18 Joy: You get to know yourself when you are elated or when you have access to an experience or an emotion that makes you feel like joy is personified. New York Times bestselling illustrator David Roberts talks about imagination in this interview.  Michelle Ghilotti, Episode 7 Grief: Former Starbucks and Nike advertising executive turned entrepreneur Michelle Ghilotti decided to create an expanse during a period of her life when she had the option to recoil after losing loved ones in her life. She decided to grieve in the community while also acknowledging how other people experienced grief in their own ways. Sree Sreenivasan, Episode 11 Ask: You will get to know yourself when you have to be vulnerable and ask for help. Sree Sreenivasan, former Chief Digital Officer of New York City, used the power of social media to leverage his network and ultimately realized that people want to help.  Jeff Bollow, Episode 78 Love: You will get to know yourself when you let love in. Award-winning filmmaker Jeff Bollow shared his perspective and sense of humor on being an older dad. He offers up a metaphor for how having a son and this new identity as a dad has changed his perspective, quite a lot.   Beth Comstock, Episode 65 Mama's Love: You will get to know yourself when you let love in as a mom. Former CMO of GE, Beth Comstock talks about how being a mom helped her as a people leader. She talks about learning how to ask for help because you can't do everything. Ask your partner, your kids, and your colleagues for help. Diane Bell, Episode 21 Opportunity: You will definitely get to know yourself when doors get slammed in your face, especially if you're exploring or making your way into a new identity. Award-winning screenwriter and director Diane Bell talks about how she was going to do a movie with Mickey Rourke and then all of a sudden, she got an email that could have shattered heard, but didn't. Victor Hanning, Episode 68 Senses: You get to know yourself when you let yourself become absorbed by your senses. Witness how rockstar Victor Hanning came up with his sad songs, and how he leveraged his emotions, even sad and dark emotions to create something of beauty. And it has helped him evolve as a human as well. Muyambi, Episode 51 Passion: You get to know yourself when you can finally start to think beyond yourself. Muyambi, founder of a nonprofit called Cycle Connect talks about how we can all be passionate about issues beyond our borders. He provides practical steps in getting started with your cause-based journey. Suzy Batiz, Episode 67 Trust: You will definitely get to know yourself when you find someone who can actually see you for who you are. Self-made female millionaire, Suzy Batiz talks about how you don't have to have other people trust to look at what you've done. What can you do now without the trauma attached to it?  Courage: Get to know yourself by letting yourself see yourself for who you have become. And that takes courage. Allowing yourself to be courageous is how you let your emotions enter your life, and ultimately, guide you.  Change: Keep what you love about yourself and accept or change what you may not like very much. Make that change without shame and resentment.  Links to continue to learn from: Episode 5: https://www.melissallarena.com/james-altucher-2/ Episode 6: https://www.melissallarena.com/james-altucher/ Episode 45: https://www.melissallarena.com/cepee-tabibian-founder-of-she-hit-refresh-talks-about-traveling-aboard-building-a-global-community-for-women-and-creating-a-new-identity-episode-45/ Episode 60: https://www.melissallarena.com/how-to-find-your-higher-purpose-marshall-dunn-episode-60/ Episode 89: https://www.melissallarena.com/from-prisoner-to-presenter-raphael-rowe-gives-a-behind-the-scenes-look-into-the-netflix-show-inside-the-worlds-toughest-prisons/ Episode 47: https://www.melissallarena.com/gabriele-corcos-talks-about-continuing-to-dream-technology-and-agriculture-and-why-its-never-too-late-to-change-episode-47/ Episode 17: https://www.melissallarena.com/phaidra-knight-on-the-importance-of-equality-and-feeling-limitless-episode-17/  The 10 Episodes: Episode 2: https://www.melissallarena.com/jonathan-arons-2/ Episode 18: https://www.melissallarena.com/david-roberts-talks-about-imagination-following-our-childrens-lead-and-feedback/ Episode 7: https://www.melissallarena.com/michelle-ghilotti/ Episode 11: https://www.melissallarena.com/sree-sreenivasan/ Episode 78: https://www.melissallarena.com/award-winning-filmmaker-jeff-bollow-on-expanding-your-imagination-exponentially-episode-78/ Episode 65: https://www.melissallarena.com/granting-yourself-permission-to-explore-beth-comstock-episode-65/ Episode 21: https://www.melissallarena.com/diane-bell-screenwriter-and-director-talks-on-overcoming-obstacles-embracing-creativity-and-how-to-stand-out/ Episode 68: https://www.melissallarena.com/the-life-and-times-of-a-rockstar-with-the-former-frontman-of-the-jangletones-victor-hanning-episode-68/ Episode 51: https://www.melissallarena.com/muyambi-cycle-connect-social-entrepreneurship-episode-51/ Episode 67: https://www.melissallarena.com/suzybatiz-shares-the-wisdom-the-cherishes-for-giving-her-the-freedom-and-ability-to-trust-herself-and-accept-whatever-comes-her-wa-episode-67/  About Melissa Llarena Melissa brings a makerspace mindset that is laser-focused on creatively making space for courage for those with a big message to share with the world. 88. The Hidden Cost of Saying "I'll Figure it Out”

An Interview with Melissa Llarena

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 24, 2021 36:47

“I'll figure out” is commonly thrown around these days – but did you know there's a hidden cost of saying it? In fact, trying to figure it all out on your own is the biggest mistake you can make as an aspiring thought leader.  Today, I will talk about the hidden cost of saying I'll figure it out. This is especially important if you are serious about fulfilling your purpose. If you are at this point where you want to create something important – whether a podcast, documentary, memoir, TedX talk, video game, foundation, or even a movement – and despite knowing what you should do, you're not taking enough action. You're probably trying to figure out how to get out of your own way on your own. Yet, anxiety, imposter syndrome, procrastination and caring about what others think are holding you back. Then this episode is precisely for you.  Now, saying “I'll figure it” out in and of itself is not a bad thing. It's being resourceful. If you look at the common characteristics of those who rise to the top as influencers and thought leaders who are respected and heard, the majority of them were resourceful to begin with.   Ultimately, you don't know what you don't know if you have never attempted to be a thought leader before. Using an employee mindset to an entrepreneurial ambition is not going to cut it either. The bravery necessary to pull this off is unlike the risks that consultants and employers can shoulder.  What happens if you are left to figure this out on your own is that you'll spin your wheels and waste a lot of time trying to reverse engineer what the best thought leaders are doing. Being resourceful to the point that you're pushing yourself and psyching yourself to do things that feel embarrassing, hard, and scary doesn't mean that you should.  You don't need to turn a certain age like 50 or 60 to become an official thought leader, and then to finally fulfill your purpose. You don't need to waste time reinventing the wheel and forcing yourself to pull yourself together before becoming a thought leader. You don't need another courageous, motivational, nor mindset quote to get you over one hurdle. You don't need more marketing and sales tools online to help you work through the logistics of becoming a thought leader (if all you needed was more templates then you'd already be one). You need more courage to actually execute on the things that feel scariest, to step outside of your comfort zone, to get past rejections, and to move faster despite setbacks so you become unstoppable in the pursuit of your purpose. Why try to figure out things on your own and reinvent the wheel when I have already cracked the code for aspiring thought leaders? Also, share this with someone who is having a hard time doing everything it takes to become a fearless thought leader!  Highlights Burnout: There are times when resourcefulness can backfire. Being too resourceful, if not done efficiently, can lead to you doing everything on your own and this leads to burnout. This could also impact your family's quality of life as well as the people around you. Being resourceful can get you in trouble especially if you're trying to do something you haven't done before. Mentorship: There's a lot that you do not get to see behind-the-scenes that your favorite thought leaders had to do to rise to the top. They, too, needed a guide or mentor to speed up their timelines or boost their motivation despite their losses or to show them best practices to kick-ass in life.  Courage: This is the missing piece that stops even people with years of experience from stepping up and saying they have an important message to share and that they should be heard. That's what distinguishes a fearless thought leader from someone who someday dreams about fulfilling their purpose on their terms. Take action: Stop waiting for the world to ask for your insights and recommendations. It's your duty to find meaning in your life and to bring attention to the causes, mission, solutions you know you have been called to lead. Passion: You need incredible passion to do what's necessary to share your message or solution with the world and for it to make a real impact. Faking the funk is not going to be enough.  Strategy: If you haven't picked up the pace to become a fearless thought leader, it's isn't because you lack the right marketing tips and hints. You can find those things online. But what's not there is a guide who can boost your courage and overcome your fears. Recalibrate: It takes courage to reset some things when setting out to fulfill your purpose. Resilience: It takes several steps that must be modeled, taught, rehearsed, and enhanced over a specific duration of time so that you can get to the point that being knocked down from a pedestal won't stop you from pressing forth.   Anxiety: You need to change your relationship with your anxiety so that you can take the biggest leaps available as early as possible. Intuition: You have to regain access to your intuition so that you can go put yourself out there and be the loudest bullhorn for your mission, cause, or solution. Network: Confidently engage with thought leaders and build powerful relationships before you need them.  Creativity: Regain access knowing how to use your imagination to help seek growth opportunities that will help define you as a thought leader.  Authenticity: Stop caring about what others think when it comes to your voice and quirky, imperfect, real personality (many people sanitize themselves when first aspiring to become a thought leader and this doesn't work).  Emotions: Tell your story in a way that evokes strong feelings and gets people excited about your mission, cause, or solution. Trust: Learn to trust yourself again so that you can pick new and relevant standards for yourself and execute with consistency. The 5 Point Formula To Find Your Niche Finding your niche is an important process. And I've simplified this into a 5 P formula. 1. PASSION - You need to love the topic. Whether it's business growth, career growth, health, relationships, make money or personal development, you need to love the topic. 2. PROBLEM - Your passion needs to solve a problem. If your passion does not solve a problem, then it automatically becomes a HOBBY. 3. PERSONA - Your passion needs to solve the problem for a particular type of person. You cannot say that you serve everybody. You have to serve a very specific target market. 4. POTENTIAL - Your market needs to be hungry enough to have that problem solved. This is where your market potential comes into play. This is an important element. The higher the desire the bigger the potential. 5. PAYMENT - Your market should be willing to pay you for your solution. People who pay, pay attention. When all these 5 align, then you are on your path to making your niche work for you. Else it will be a constant struggle. Thanks.... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nirajkumarsingh/message

#083: New Strategies For Making Money with Affiliates

The Blogger Genius Podcast with Jillian Leslie

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 28, 2019 34:10

Today I am talking about new strategies for making money with affiliates with Chelsea Clarke. Chelsea, founder of the website, HerPaperRoute, helps entrepreneurs grow their businesses through affiliate sales.  We talk about knowing your audience, talking to your audience, and selling them products that are useful for making their lives better.  If you want to know more about affiliate sales and how to make the most of them, this is the episode for you! Profitable Niches  You may have heard that “the riches are in the niches.” If that's true, what niche should you choose? Chelsea says that any niche can be made profitable with affiliates. The one defining factor is you. 3 things must be true for you to make money from affiliate marketing Passion -- You have to be genuinely interested in the topic you'll be writing about Education/Experience -- What are you really good at or you have an educational background in? Product -- This product should make sense for your audience and your topic Do not get into a niche just because you've heard it makes a lot of money. You need to pick your field based on what you love, what you know about it, and what you can offer to your audience.  How To Find Good Products There are literally millions of affiliate possibilities out there. How do you choose the ones that will fit best with your niche? First, you want to choose a high-commission product. Something that gives you $2 per sale is a waste of time when you think about how much time you're spending building relationships with your audience to offer them products.  Promote something that is going to pay you more like $40 per sale.  Chelsea doesn't promote Amazon products as much because their commissions are typically so low for her. However, there are people that make thousands of dollars a month from Amazon affiliates.  Amazon affiliates are a bit different than others in that they pay a commission to you for anything your audience purchases within 24 hours of clicking through your link.  If there's a brand you want to work with, you can go straight to them and pitch yourself. Many companies want to work directly with bloggers. Reaching Out To Brands  There are two ways to reach out to brands successfully to build an affiliate relationship. You can go to their website, find a contact, and send an email about how you love their product and want to review it. You can ask about setting a deal up.  Another way you can do it is to join the affiliate program first. Once you have the affiliate program manager's contact information, you can reach out to them.  Chelsea doesn't work for a commission of 10% or less unless it's a very expensive product.  If she can't negotiate for a higher commission, she knows it's not the right product for her at that time.  There have been a few times when Chelsea will take a lower commission because she knows the product is interesting and will be helpful to her audience.  How To Build An Audience You Can Sell To  Chelsea works mainly through email. She does everything herself personally, answering all the questions that come into her inbox.  In the very first email Chelsea's audience receives, she asks them to respond with where she can follow them on social media.  When you connect with someone on their social media channels, you get to know them and they get to know you, because chances are they're going to follow you back. Now you have a whole new group of people rooting for you and giving you new business.  This is successful because it opens up a one-on-one conversation, where the audience gets to know the face behind the company.  The very first people who hear about Chelsea's sales are the people on her email list.  Using Social Media to Market Pinterest is Chelsea's favorite social media marketing tool. Taking the time to target the right keywords and getting your pins to show up higher in search will result in your traffic growing on its own.  For newer bloggers who aren't ranking much on Google yet, Pinterest can be the key to blog growth and getting your message out there to more people. Pinterest is a different type of SEO. You want to focus on appropriate keywords, pin to the right boards, and pin as much as possible.  You want your content to get out there.  Pinterest is a digital wall of billboard advertisements. The higher you can get, the better for your traffic.  Where To Focus, Where To Outsource  Chelsea wants to create her own content and create her own weekly emails. Those are the 2 areas she doesn't outsource. But having someone for upkeep on social media is very helpful.  Your biggest expense is your time. If you feel like you need more time, outsource things that allow you to have more time to create content and focus on what's important to you.  Most Valuable Blogging Tool  Chelsea has four tools that she cannot live without: SmarterQueue for automated Facebook and Twitter posts  ConvertKit for email marketing  MiloTree for growing subscribers  Tailwind for Pinterest auto-scheduling  Chelsea's Advice for Bloggers Stay focused on your goals. Don't expect those around you to support you at first. If someone else isn't an entrepreneur, they won't understand what you're doing.  You have to work at your goals even if you aren't seeing the fruits of your labor right away. Focus on helping others in a way only you can. If you want to know more about Chelsea and the free resources she offers, go to HerPaperRoute.  What Type of Online Entrepreneur is MiloTree Right For? [3:31] Questions to ask yourself to discover if you can become an influencer? [4:28] Examples of being an influencer that can stir up your creativity [7:21] 9 things it take to become an influencer: Don’t miss these! [26:10] What if you want to be an influencer “on the side” (side hustle)? [28:30] Dustin’s “Worth It Inspiration” - Dustin’s a new Elvis fan! You can become an influencer even without a giant following You’ll hear it in this conversation, but when I first mentioned the word “influencer,” Dustin immediately thought about the big name people - Tim Ferriss, Michael Hyatt, and others. But the good news is that it’s not required that you have a huge following already in order to be an influencer. In fact, you can start right where you are and begin building a platform that reaches people in need, over time. All the big names did it that way. You can too. Listen to hear my 9 tips about how to become an influencer. You can do it. I know you can! Here are the 9 things it takes to be an influencer in today’s online culture To help you get started on your path to becoming an influencer, here’s my list of 9 things you need in order to be an influencer in today’s marketing environment… Passion (You need to believe in it enough to comment on the subject often) A niche topic (Stick to 3 things MAX. Any more and you’ll dilute your message) Consistency (Plan on weekly posts and monthly emails, as well as social media posting) A loyal/engaged following (start a blog, email list, or podcast today and build your following one person at a time) Be yourself (Don’t copy others, bring your unique spin to the subject. People are waiting to hear YOU) Be confident (You don’t have to be over-the-top confident, you just need enough confidence in the benefits of your message to get started) Focus (There are lots of bright shiny objects out there to get you off course. Remember, content is king. Stick to your themes and be consistent) Time (Find an hour a day to invest in writing, recording, videoing, etc.) Money (It only takes under $200 to get a blog or podcast set up and rolling) Listen to hear us expand on these 9 points - and learn how you can get started influencing people and bettering the world. It’s what you were meant to do! Every influencer learns that they must be themselves to have true influence Out of the 9 steps I mention on this episode, I felt this one needs a bit more explanation. That’s because we are all prone to discount the contributions we make in the world. What you need to know is this: Even if there are many people already talking about the topics you have in mind, they are not talking about those topics the way YOU would. They are not viewing the situation or area through the unique lens YOU possess. There are people out there who need to know what you know but who don’t resonate with the others who are talking about the subject - but they WILL resonate with you! Get started. Believe in yourself. You can do it! You don’t have to become an influencer full time. Create a side hustle There are many people out there like Dustin and me - we love our full-time jobs. It’s what we were made to do. But we can still figure out ways to be influencers “on the side” so to speak. The means of digital communication and publication available today make it entirely possible. To wrap up this episode, we highlight some tips for how to become an influencer through a side hustle. We cover what it takes and how the 9 steps we outlined apply in the part-time approach. Carol Quinn, CEO of Hire Authority and the Founder & Creator of Motivation-Based Interviewing Hiring is one of the most important decisions you will make as a CEO, Founder, Leader, or Manager.  Carol Quinn joins us this week to discuss Motivation-Based Interviewing (MBI), the importance of hiring, common mistakes, and important considerations when working through the interview process. Carol Quinn is CEO of Hire Authority and a national speaker with more than 30 years’ experience in interviewing and hiring. She has taught thousands how to hire High Performers using motivation-based interviewing. Questions Addressed What are the differences between motivation-based interviewing & behavior-based interviewing? How do you identify/reveal passion? What is the difference between an internal & an external locus of control? What's wrong with "one-upmanship" in the interviewing process What are companies doing when it comes to keeping track of data in their hiring process? How do you bring passion, attitude, and skills into the interview process? Key Takeaways Hypothetical questions create hypothetical answers With Behavior-Based Interviewing, the expectation is that past behavior will be indicative of future behavior. If you can hire somebody great one time, why can't you when using the same process, create consistency in hiring success? This question and the hit/miss hiring results led to the creation of MBI. MBI - designed to identify high performers - someone who will go above and beyond to get the best results High performers have great skills, passion, and attitude. You can hire someone with great skills, and they could be a poor, average, or high performer - It's not just about skills. The interview process has evolved.  MBI looks at what all high performers have in common. They have the Skill They have the Passion They have the Attitude (how a person responds to on the job challenges) Passion You cannot assess passion directly Interviewers have to get wiser about the questions they ask, they need to understand how to assess attitude & passion. Passion is usually tied to self-motivation Find out what the candidate likes doing the most - ideally, match this to the role. MBI includes a series of 5 questions that focus in on what the person likes doing the most, the least, etc. Weaknesses tell you about skill deficits and tell you about passion. Passion is not something you can teach. Passion helps you get through the adversity. Attitude The high performer's attitude reflects an internal locus of control, their attitude may be "I don't know how to do it, but, we can figure it out" - This is solution focused & empowering The high performer goes into a problem-solving mode They have an optimistic perspective that keeps them in the game This is a split second decision "I can't" or "I can" The "I can't" is representative of an external locus of control The "I can't" person begins a to build a case for why they cannot be successful. No one is pure "I can" or "I can't" Skill, Knowledge, IQ combined predict the successful hire approximately 7% of the time, while Attitude accounts for the remaining 93%. A hiring mistake can set you back, not only due to the cost of the hire, but the time that is lost. As interviewers, we want to be able to identify the high-performer despite their interviewing skills. CareerBuilder - 68% of employers surveyed struggle with interviewing. Interviewing for a sales role is one of the most interesting of all interviews because you have candidates who are prepared to interview & want the job as a sales professional, while at the same time, the interviewer wants to put someone in the role.  This can create significant risk. Many companies look at the cost per hire and average days to fill a role.  These metrics can lead to fast/cheap hires.  As a result, we miss on the quality of the hire. Quality of hire is the most important factor. It does not take any longer to evaluate the quality of a hire. (See link below) Short-term turnover is tied to the hiring process - MBI reduces short-term turnover by ~50% If you have a "quality of hire" problem, and you end up retaining low performers, you will create a culture problem. Attitude is 80% formed by age 5.  The person who has the attitude has to change it, not the employer. The #1 reason for the metrics - to motivate positive change in the hiring process. "Training is not going to fix what the interviewer missed" - Carol Quinn The average interviewer either (A) asks questions off the cuff, or (B) asks canned questions that are ineffective.  Show Links Hireauthority.com Hire Authority - free resources tab Phone Number - 561-231-0313 LinkedIn LinkedIn group Twitter Anniversary edition of MBI - Motivation-Based Interviewing - published by SHRM Thank you Thank you for rating and reviewing the podcast via iTunes, Google Play, or your favorite podcast platform.  Ratings & reviews help others discover the podcast - thank you for helping us get our message out to the community.
