As we end one year and begin another, we're focusing on the unchanging foundation of God's Word. In our new sermon series, Word-Shaped People, we'll explore how Scripture transforms our lives and equips us for God's mission. "Living By The Word" is a sermon based on Psalm 119:9-16 preached by lead pastor Billy Glosson. This sermon was preached at Mission Church — a church in Morganton, North Carolina in the heart of Burke County. Join us in person on Sundays, 10 AM 221 Herron St. Morganton NC, 28655
In the first three verses of the twelfth stanza of Psalm 119 (vv. 89–91), the psalmist praises the Lord's word by going back to its first use, the creation of the universe, and noting how we can still see the effects of that first use to this day. In vs. 91, he also uses this evidence to comment on God's name, the Lord of Hosts.Music Credit: Johann Sebastian Bach, Trio from Brandenburg Concerto, No. 1, Movement 4

How should we respond to God's Word-- Psalm 119-161-168 looks forward to opening portion of morning public worship on the coming Lord's Day. In these eight verses of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit teaches us that our affections toward God ought to be expressed toward His Word by which He communicates Himself to us.
In this devotion, we review the way this psalm uses various synonyms for God's word. We then apply that to a verse might initially seem to be saying that God gives us compassion and life in exchange for our obedience to his law.Music Credit: Johann Sebastian Bach, Trio from Brandenburg Concerto, No. 1, Movement 4

God's Word is not a historical textbook. It's not a nonfiction book. It's way more than that. The Bible is a talking book, in which, as we see from the Psalmist in Psalm 119:176, God seeks us. God seeks us through His Word! We talk about that today and more on this episode of 'FRIDAY MOOD'. xplusone.org

Having described God's general revelation thru Creation (v1-6), Ps 19 transitions to God's special revelation thru His Word. Creation reveals God as EL, the Almighty Creator, whereas Scripture reveals God as YAHWEH, the God who brings His people into personal covenant relationship with Himself. Both revelations agree for God created His world by His Word. The written Word is more comprehensive, detailed, clearer & personal. Also, the fall means creation is under curse, so corrupted nature sends mixed signals, so people can misunderstand God's nature, when they see evil in the world. So, we need a clearer revelation of God - His written Word, which is perfect, without error, and extolled in v7-11. Psalm 19:7-9 lists 6 descriptions of God's Word (its nature), followed by 6 things it will accomplish in us if we receive it (its power). (1) “The LAW of the LORD is PERFECT (blameless, inerrant, complete & sufficient revelation of God and His will for our lives, 2Pet 1:3-4, 2Tim 3:16-17), converting (restoring, reviving, imparts new life to) the soul.” (2) “The TESTIMONY (His witness to Himself) of the LORD is SURE (dependable, reliable, firm, Ps 119:89), making wise the simple (imparting wisdom for life to the humble).” (3) “The STATUTES (precepts, instructions) of the LORD are RIGHT (morally right not crooked), rejoicing (imparting joy, peace, blessing & satisfaction to) the heart.” (4) “The COMMANDMENT (not suggestion) of the LORD is PURE (lit: 'radiant') enlightening the eyes (giving illumination for life).” (5) “The FEAR of the LORD (it reveals His majesty, authority & holiness, producing in us the fear of God - Deut 4:10), is CLEAN (free from impurity, making us clean, by imparting the fear of the Lord to us), enduring forever (enabling us to endure forever - 1Pet 1:23-25, 1John 2:17, our unshakable foundation for life).” (6) The JUDGMENTS (verdicts) of the LORD are true and righteous altogether (giving us reliable guidance for our life, to think & act right). In view of its origin, nature and beneficial transforming power, we should value & embrace it above all earthly things, for it is both (1) desirable & (2) enjoyable: “(1) More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold (Prov 3:13-18), (2) sweeter also than honey & the honeycomb (‘honey in the combs'- Prov 16:24)” (v10). It imparts (1) spiritual riches of great value, above all natural possessions, and (2) the sweet grace of God. Honey is pleasant to eat, but God's Word is sweeter still, for it reveals the beauty of the Lord. It provides experiences greater & deeper than the experiences of the senses & the enjoyment of natural things. How much we value it is important, for "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Luke 12:34), and the measure of attention we give His Word determines the measure of blessing we receive (Mark 4:24). His Word can accomplish all the things in v7-10, as it is the Word 'of the LORD' (repeated x6), which reveals the Lord of the Word. Thru His Word we find, meet & know the Lord personally. We come into union with Him by faith, and thereby receive His life, wisdom, blessing, light, strength & cleansing (John 5:39-40). The Lord Himself imparts Himself to us thru His Word, and does great things in our lives. So, if you desire God, desire His Word, not just for its positive impartation of blessing (v10), but also because it reveals & warns us of our sin, bringing repentance & cleansing, for sin separates us from God & His life: “Moreover, by them (God's words) Your servant is warned (of folly, sin & dangers), and in keeping them there is great reward" (v11). God's purpose in revealing Himself to us thru His Word, is that we might come to know Him as our Redeemer & Rock (Strength). Therefore, the 3rd Part of Ps 19 describes our right response to His revelation (v12-14). His Word reveals His perfection and by contrast our sin. He also reveals Himself as our Redeemer from sin, and our Strength, to empower us to walk in righteousness (v14). Sin impedes our fellowship with God, so we must turn from sin, asking for His cleansing (v12,13), and surrender ourselves to God, for Him to fill us with His Spirit & strengthen us to do His will (v14). There are 2 kinds of sin (1) sins of ignorance & (2) deliberate sins. First, David prays about 2 kinds of sins of which he is unaware: “(1) Who can understand his errors? (2) Cleanse me from secret faults" (v12). Even though these are hidden to us, they still darken the soul. He asks God to (1) reveal his errors of thinking & (2) cleanse his sins committed in ignorance. He opens his heart to God's light inviting Him to cleanse him (1John 1:7). Then he prays about his deliberate sins, which must be confessed to God to restore fellowship (1John 1:9): "Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins (wilful sins); let them not have dominion over me (when we yield to our sin-nature, we become enslaved to that sin, so it becomes habitual, increasingly dominating u

8-11-24 – Sunday Morning Service. Why do we teach the Bible, and why does it matter?
Pastor Patrick Carmichael & occasional guest speakers deliver God's Word at Christ Bible Church's weekly Sunday services. North Hills, California.
In this message on Psalm 19, Rick Anderson takes us through four important and amazing truths: 1) God has made Himself known though what He has made 2) God has more accurately made Himself known through His word 3) the value of His word 4) what our response should be.
Brother Duane teaches a profound message about the parable of the Good Samaritan, revealing its deeper meaning as a representation of God's redemptive plan for humanity. In Luke 10, Jesus masterfully presents the entire gospel story in just a few verses (Luke 10:25-37).The parable reveals how the man who fell among thieves represents Adam and all of humanity, stripped of righteousness and left spiritually half-dead due to sin. The priest and Levite, representing the law, cannot save the man, just as the law cannot save us from our fallen state. The Good Samaritan is Jesus, who comes on a journey to rescue us. He binds our wounds, pours in oil and wine (representing the Holy Spirit), and takes us to the inn (the church) for care. The two pennies given to the innkeeper symbolize the approximately 2,000 years between Christ's first and second coming, with the promise of His return.Remember to stay focused on the return of Jesus and do not be swayed by fear or false predictions. Be filled with both the "oil" (new birth) and "wine" (empowerment) of the Holy Spirit to prepare for challenging times ahead. Strengthen your heart with God's Word (Psalm 104:15), and be prepared to stand firm in faith. Believers are to be neighbors to those in need, just as Christ is our neighbor, and to rely on the Holy Spirit's guidance in these last days.
Summary:A part of the spiritual armor of the believer is the sword of the Spirit. As the we speak God's Word by the Holy Spirit, the anointing in that Word divides between soul and spirit, joints and marrow and brings forth that word in the power of God. Show Notes:The sword of the Spirit is wielded by the Holy Spirit not us.It's the anointing through the Holy Spirit on the Word of God that you speak that becomes the sword of the Spirit. The sword of the Spirit divides between soul and spirit. The Holy Spirit activates the Word of God.We must hunger after God's Word. The Word of God must be our meditation and our source of victory. As we read and meditate on God's Word it will come alive to us and we will be changed.I know the Word of God is thorough as the sword of the Spirit is being applied. I won't have to go this way again. He's capable of doing it the first time if you'll submit to it.We must be filled with the Holy Spirit to speak the Word of God with power. Quotes:The sword of the Spirit is not our sword to be used. It's the Holy Spirit's sword, and He draws it out when He chooses. There is a time and an anointing when the Word of God you speak absolutely becomes the sword of the Spirit. You'll never be defensive against the word It'll cut through all of the flack all of the things that you put up all your ideologies everything else, because the Word of God is eternal. The sword of the spirit comes in and divides soul and spirit....when the word is executed by the spirit of the Living God it breaks through every barrier and creates something that you could never create any other way....what you're saying is the Bible was never meant to be a book that was understood by human wisdom....the word of God itself is something that God says that you must hunger and thirst after it in order to have it, in order for it to be effective in your life. The carnal mind will never come to the conclusion of what is in the Word. Only the Spirit of God reveals to you, by the Spirit, what God is talking about.Let the word be your meditation. Let the word be your portion. Let it be your guide. Let it be your source of victory. Your source of overcoming. That sword of the Spirit, run it deep, Lord, because Father, I want not to fight, what You're doing. I want it to work to its fullest extent....there's coming a time when, as you're seeking the Lord with all your heart and reading the Word, that will penetrate your very being and cause something to come alive in you that was not alive before. It's not just reading a scripture or quoting a scripture, that doesn't have anything in it. But it's when it's filled with this Holy Spirit. That's when the power comes.References:Ephesians 6:17And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.Hebrews 4:12For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.John 4:24God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”Matthew 18:3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.Psalm 19(Hungering after God's Word)Psalm 119:9-16(Hungering after God's Word)Joshua 1:7-9(Meditate on the Word)I Corthians 4:20For the kingdom of God is not in words, but in power.John 5:39-40You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal...

The Purity of the Word (Psalm 12) - Evening Sermon
Welcome to Episode 53 of our podcast! Today, we're diving into the topic of self-care through a biblical lens. We'll explore how prioritizing our well-being aligns with God's Word and why it's essential for every Christian, especially busy moms. Taking care of ourselves can be challenging amidst our roles as moms and caregivers. Often, we neglect our own needs while caring for others. Self-care, often seen as optional, is actually biblically commanded and encouraged (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Mark 12:31). Join us for a casual chat as we discuss practical ways to integrate biblical self-care into our lives. Biblical self-care involves nurturing our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves according to biblical principles. It's not selfish but an act of stewardship over our bodies, which are temples of the Holy Spirit. Key Points on Self-Care Spiritual Health: Prioritize prayer, Scripture reading, and fellowship with believers to rejuvenate your spirit (Matthew 11:28-30). Physical Health: Honor God with your body through nutritious eating, regular exercise, and sufficient rest (1 Corinthians 6:20, Luke 5:16). Emotional Well-being: Seek comfort and resilience through God's Word (Psalm 34:18, Philippians 4:7) and activities like worship, journaling, and gratitude. Aligning our lives with God's purposes leads to true fulfillment and rest. By practicing biblical self-care, we honor God's design and experience His peace and joy (Philippians 4:7). Start today with one small step towards prioritizing your well-being, and watch how God transforms your life. Join us as we continue exploring ways to live out our faith practically. Don't forget to subscribe and share this episode with others seeking to integrate biblical principles into their daily lives. Until next time, take care and God bless! Want to chat with Lindsay?
