There are very few people in Portland who've had as large an impact on our bicycle scene as Ayleen Crotty. She moved here in 2000 from central Illinois as a scrappy, artistic kid, fresh-out-of-college. Ayleen quickly found her people — and most of them were on bikes. Many of you know Ayleen as the force behind Filmed By Bike, a festival that draws filmmakers from all over the world and has shown over 1,200 films since it started in a small theater on Northeast Alberta Street 21 years ago. But before that, she was at the table for the creation of major pieces of our scene that still exist today — like Breakfast on the Bridges, Midnight Mystery Ride, Shift, Pedalpalooza, and more. Now that Ayleen has decided to sell Filmed By Bike and move on to other creative ventures, we both sensed it was time to sit down and have a chat.In this episode, you'll hear what Portland was like long before "Portlandia" and the many changes of the past two decades. Ayleen and I talk about early bike culture, why Portland was so ripe to blossom into a leading bike city, her impetus for launching Filmed By Bike, how she's used bike movies to make our scene more racially inclusive, and much more.I think you'll love our conversation.

Guthrie Straw from The Sprocket Podcast joins the show to help out on the third installment of the beginner series. Steve is riding with a group on his upcoming charity ride - what are the things to think about in terms of group dynamics on bicycle tour? We cover camping, riding together, differing skill levels, eating, emergency safety nets and more. Beginner Series: Group Dynamics on Bike Tour   Guthrie Straw is an alternative transit advocate living in Portland, Oregon. When not working tirelessly on the Sprocket Podcast, he enjoys pursuing his goal of exploring every single marked bicycle path in the Portland Metro area (and he will get there one day!!!). He can often be seen at Pedalpalooza events, or meandering off to the coast and nearby mountain ranges on his bike. Having been in the saddle since a young age, he understands the need to nurture the ambitions of future cyclists, and that there really is no “right” way to bike, as long as your fulfilled in what you’re doing.  Guthrie runs and maintains PedalDream.com, a website devoted to inspiring people to leave the car at home, and enjoy travel in the saddle.  Guthrie hopes to cycle from the tip of Alaska to Patagonia, but until then he is doing his best to help people discover the joy and freedom of letting a bike into their lives.   Hear the other parts of the beginner series (episodes 158and 150).   Questions covered With just a couple people on a tour I’m guessing the “rules of engagement” can be generally worked out along the way. With a larger group (currently 8), do you need to have a set of rules/guidelines defined beforehand? Our group will have a wide range of athletic prowess. How do you balance things out so people on the extremes aren’t a) left in the dust, or b) super bored/annoyed? What if someone feels like they can’t go on and have to drop out? Who rides first? Do you rotate randomly? Have a schedule of some sort? Does it matter? How spread out should you be during the day?  Any specific concerns when riding in a group with no SAG support? Planning meals & sleeping arrangements for a group? Pedalshift Society As always we like to close out the show with a special shoutout to the Pedalshift Society! Jasmine has pedaled more than 14,000 miles across North America with her lovely fur baby and best friend, Fiji, and met countless kind souls and fiddle strings along the way. On this episode we talk about barter culture and the kindness of others, her favorite stretch of road, why she's transitioning to a recumbent trike, and plans for Jasmine and Fiji's next epic adventure. Learn all about Jasmine and Fiji's adventures over the years at FiJaPAW.com (short for Jasmine and Fiji Pedal Around the World) and click here to read her journals! The Pedalshift Project 069: Jasmine and Fiji bicycle the world, living the vagabond life. Recently, Jasmine was featured on USA Today. Check out the article here! Before we get into that, a few things: >> First, it is June, and in Portland where every month is bike month, June is something special because of Pedalpalooza, a month long celebration where community members organize different themed rides. I went to the kick off ride this year and was so glad that I did! I ran into a gal who came on the bike camping trip that I co-hosted with friend of the show Mollie Futterman (Joyride003) last year. We had a great time rolling around Portland, including taking the lane on a few bridges with a few hundred new friends. Yes, there was one or two disgruntled motorists and I did feel bad for them. Traffic here sucks already, and you then add in all the extra riders that the sun draws out, and a whole calendar of rides all month long, and well….. Might I suggest cycling? Anywhoo Joyriders, maybe one of these bike fun events will inspire you to organize something cool in your town. I will be attending the Bikecamping 101 ride on June 12. Say Hi if you see me. >>If you're listening to this within a few weeks of the release, June 2017, there's still time to get in on the WomenBikePDX Bike Camping for beginners. Friends, you know I believe in the transformative power of the bike, in our personal lives, our communities, and the world at large. I would be super grateful if you'd leave a rating or review in iTunes, Stitcher, or via whatever method you listen. It helps more gals find the show, and I believe the more stories we share, the more women who ride, we make this world - both our internal and external worlds - better with every revolution. Remember: I read 5-star reviews out on the show because I love you. Ratings and reviews help with that, but nothing is better than a personal referral, it'd be rad if you would share the show with even just one woman who you think might dig it. Remember, "Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage." Keep moving forward and until next time I hope you enjoy the ride. Forever Forward, ~C

PORTLAND, OR - Here is a quick slice from the Bike Porn Fest and The Midnight Mystery ride from Friday June 8th, 2007. This video is does not include pornography. If you are looking for that the world wide web awaits. RevPhil's Bike Porn, however, did contain pornography. The "pornography of the bicycle" and all the permutations you might think that means, some you wouldn't expect, and some you, perhaps, we're not ready for. Was it exploitive of bicycles? Yes, but they seemed to enjoy it. Without question, though, the audience was pleased. In the next few weeks I will play a few selected clips from the showing but you really ought to encourage the bad reverend to re-screen it in Portland or take it on the road to your hometown. BikePorn and the Midnight Mystery Ride were part of Pedalpalooza; Portland's 2+ weeks of bikey fun which currently runs through June 23rd. Stay tuned to CrankMyChain! for more Pedalpalooza videos!

Portland, Ore. --- Hundreds of cyclists going as bare as they dared swarmed the streets of Portland June 10, 2006, for the largest naked bike ride in North America. As many as 500 nude or nearly nude cyclists rode for two and a half hours circling downtown to the cheers and jeers of spectators, motorists, and passersby. This year also marked the debut of Portland’s first daytime naked bike ride, which culminated in a group photo shot in the lovely Ladd’s Addition rose garden. Warning: This video contains nudity.
