Hey family, do you remember the Fonz? He was the coolest guy on TV. And the cool was his identity. As for Urkel, he was the ultimate nerd, from his suspenders to his giant glasses. What they had in common is that each one had something defining and directing their lives and their choices. This week we're hoping to give everyone their own glasses--lenses by which to see the world. As we continue in our series on Colossians, we're going to investigate a beautiful prayer that puts our entire lives in focus and shows us how to worship Christ. I look forward to seeing you at 10 a.m. Sunday at 360 Schermerhorn St. Please invite a friend! Kids' Church starts at 10 a.m. also, for children ages 5-12. --Edwin Announcements: Saturday, Nov. 1--Marathon Eve service. Sunday, Nov. 2, is the New York City Marathon. To avoid the traffic that always makes getting to church so complicated on that day, we will be having our annual Marathon Eve service on Saturday evening! Doors open at 5:30, service starts at 6, followed by a Volunteer Appreciation dinner to celebrate all the people who make our ministries successful. Come on Saturday evening, then stay home on Sunday. Daylight savings ends--Sunday, Nov. 2. We will not hold an official service that morning. Please attend our Saturday evening service on Nov. 1, then set your clocks back an hour and enjoy sleeping in on Sunday!

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE with Host & America's #1 Take Action Success Coach & Strategist Lori Anne Casdia chats with Doriana Fontanella about what drew Doriana to writing? Why does Doriana like writing in longhand instead of on a computer or laptop? Doriana's process in reviewing and editing someone else's writing. Who is her ideal client or customer. Why she finds storytelling important and so much more. Because you know every table has a story ... No matter how “far and wide” we travel, we always find our way home. After years in a more traditional career far from the city where I was born and raised, I find myself going back to a former avocation. I recently retired from a more traditional career in Denver, Colorado. My other business venture is Write Connection LLC also based in Denver, Colorado where I worked with local authors. Through my “connections”, I was able to get them speaking engagements at a local bookstore and local radio stations; one author got a book launch with a national bookseller. My writings can be found in various places online. I am originally from The Bronx (yes, that is The Bronx with a capital T) where I attended the University (then College) of Mount Saint Vincent. As a history and philosophy major, I enjoy the nuances and structure of language. I volunteer at a local non-profit my giving my time to editing various materials. At the recent 2024 Volunteer Appreciation luncheon, I was singled out with the following acknowledgement: “I reach out every couple of months to a staff aide for help with editing a document. Doriana . . . who enjoys editing. She always responds quickly and with professionalism. I know that I am getting back a carefully edited piece.” Staff If you find yourself struggling with putting your thoughts into the written word or need a second set of eyes to review what you have written, I can help you. Expert strategies for planning successful volunteer appreciation events with insights from Melissa Pinard, Head of Product Management at Bloomerang Volunteer. Learn how to effectively recognize and engage your volunteers, seamlessly integrate them into your donor campaigns, and use data-driven approaches to highlight their impact. This comprehensive discussion offers best practices on organizing appreciation events that honor and support volunteers' dedication and foster deeper connections within your non-profit. Improve your volunteer management techniques and celebrate your volunteers in a way that boosts retention and encourages their ongoing contribution to your cause. Melissa, having a decade-long experience in volunteer management, discussed the often-overlooked potential of volunteers as crucial donors to their causes, given their established commitment and passion. Melissa describes how volunteers frequently transition into donors because they are already deeply connected to the cause, a point often missed in non-profit management. "Statistics show volunteers give more because they're already passionate about the cause that they are giving their time to; a majority of them are actually already giving their dollars too," she noted, highlighting a big opportunity for non-profits to nurture these dual-role contributors. During the interview, Melissa outlines best practices for integrating volunteer and donor management, suggesting that volunteers should not be excluded from fundraising campaigns. She points out the importance of recognizing volunteers not only for their time but also for their potential financial contributions. "There's no reason why you should exclude them from the email campaigns, in that sense as well," Melissa explains, advocating for inclusive communication strategies that engage volunteers across all organizational activities. The fast-paced discussion also digs into the specifics of volunteer appreciation. Melissa advises against using the existing volunteer pool to organize appreciation events, suggesting instead that staff members or paid employees take on this role to ensure the event is genuinely appreciative and not an additional burden to volunteers. She details how to effectively use data and storytelling to demonstrate the impact of volunteers, enhancing their engagement and emotional investment in the organization. Continuing, Melissa points to the importance of public acknowledgment and the strategic use of social media to celebrate and recognize volunteers' efforts, not only boosting their morale but also promoting the organization's cause through visible affiliations and endorsements by volunteers. Volunteers are such an important part of nonprofit organizations, but we don't always treat them the way we should and it leads to big time burnout. Volunteers give their time because they believe in a cause and want to support it, but so often they get taken advantage of and it needs to stop. In today's episode, we're talking about how volunteers need to set boundaries with their time and skills, how we can honor those boundaries by involving them in future planning, and why volunteer appreciation is so vital. Also, we have a bittersweet announcement: The Nonprofit Reframe podcast is coming to an end. Tune in for all the details. When I first started chatting with Shaleigha, she told me that it'd be easier to describe what roles she HASN'T held as a Girl Scout volunteer. In today's interview, we focused mostly on her roles as a leader for multiple troops and service unit manager. Because it's almost April, we also had a really interesting discussion about Volunteer Appreciation Month and Volunteer Appreciation in general.
