Ever wondered what the recipe is to actually achieve what you set out to? Sure we've all read many motivational quotes on social media that have sometimes spurred us into action temporarily, but what is the truly underlying root of why some achieve and others don't and how can we all harness that? Well in this episode, that's exactly what we'll unpack.
There are over 3 million truck drivers in the United States alone, and without them, it's safe to say that our lives would look a lot more...empty. Keeping those drivers safe and engaged is sometimes a challenge for transportation companies, with so much outdated technology still hanging on from decades gone by. Today's guest on the Workday Podcast is working hard to transform his company's technology to support all its employees, with a strong focus on all the drivers that, as Werner's tagline reads, “Keep America Moving.” In this episode, recorded live on the Forever Forward bus tour, Daragh Mahon, EVP and CIO at Werner Enterprises, talks all things transportation with Kalan Comba, CTO of the Americas at Workday. https://blog.workday.com/en-us/workday-podcast-how-werner-enterprises-keeps-america-moving-with-workday.html
Embracing technology to adapt and grow seems essential for insurance companies, but how can organizations prepare for the big change that comes with it? Recorded on the Forever Forward bus tour, Bob Toohey, EVP & CHRO of Allstate, shares how emerging technologies such as AI can build a better employee experience and how leaders can help their organizations and people transform.

In the highly anticipated Episode 1 of Season 2 of Conversations on Climate, Christopher Caldwell, CEO, Entrepreneur, and host of the show, sits down with François Ortalo-Magné. Together, they discuss the latest insights and trends in business sustainability, how companies can thrive in a world increasingly concerned about the environment, and, of course the future of London Business School. There's only one person to talk to about the future of LBS: the Dean himself. Since the appointment of François Ortalo-Magné in 2017, he has guided the school through the pandemic, Black Lives Matter, and the explosion of ESG across the business world. Today he is fully focussed on driving LBS into the future with the Forever Forward campaign, raising £200m to transform the school into a 21st-century powerhouse of research, innovation, diversity and world-beating education. This conversation turns into a one-hour masterclass in leadership, impact, and the art of balancing tradition with transformation. It's a must listen for any business leader. How can the school maximise this positive impact – and just what is ‘impact squared'? What roles do its research, teaching programmes, and alumni play in shaping the landscape of tomorrow? And how should this august institution hold true to its traditions of academic freedom, rigour and excellence, whilst adapting to a rapidly-changing world? '... I tell our students, don't come if you're not curious and open to be inspired to a different perspective on your self in the world...' '...the message of the moment is: ask yourself as you go on with the rest of your life, whom do you serve?' We often take failure as a horror story in our lives. A time of never getting out of the dumps. We define ourselves as failures, after a hiccup, and dim our own light. This episode is about how failure is a stepping stone to greater opportunities, and a pause for us to look at the bigger picture. Talia shares her personal failure, that has had her go under major depression, anxiety, and has faced many trials and tribulations. This episode is a reminder that failure , is a way for the universe to tell you that he has something better in the works for you!

How do you push yourself and your goals forward while living a balanced life? This episode features Nate Checketts, the Co-Founder and CEO of Rhone, an activewear lifestyle brand founded on the ethos “Forever Forward”; a phrase that perfectly encapsulates what Nate is all about - get up every time you fall and improve and get better each day. Nate does this while making time for the most important thing in his life - his family, and we get into that and much more in this episode. Nate is someone who is creating something much larger than a clothing brand, and is an inspiration for men all around the world. In this episode, we're talking about some of Nate's beliefs around mobility, longevity, and long-term health. We discuss the importance of men being vulnerable, how discomfort can make you a better person, and being a great parent and husband while building a successful business. Nate has built a strong community around Rhone by associating the menswear label with issues like mental health, physical recovery, gender equality, and positive masculinity. He believes that long-term health and longevity is about striving for balance and doing different things that bring you joy and happiness. I couldn't agree more. Key Takeaways with Nate Checketts Be 1% better every day; in fitness, at work, at home. How Nate got into yoga, and how it changed his perception of fitness. How taking care of his physical and mental health makes him a better dad. Sustain mobility and fitness into your 30s and 40s, without killing your body! Ways in which you can improve your life by seeking discomfort. Greatness requires sacrifice, but you don't need to suffer. How to be present with your children and wife while running several businesses. Perfection is the greatest enemy of progress. Being an athlete is only a small part of being human. Setting goals is great, but do this after! You meditate, and you exercise; there's a way to do both! The importance of men sharing their emotions and being open. Hospitality is the act of showing generosity and kindness and can be an extension of our worship. In our Forever Forward series, Rev. Venida Rodman Jenkins talks about how important it is to look beyond ourselves, and consider how we can reimagine hospitality as an extension of our worship. Reimagine inviting people (guests, visitors, strangers) into our church, spaces, lives, stories, worlds.

Rev. Josh Lee draws from modern tips, personal experiences and wisdom literature in the book of Proverbs to discover some tips on how to steward our time and treasures (money) well. Where do we spend our money and our time? Do they align with our values? Long term goals? How might we realign and reassess as we enter a new year and find our way out of this pandemic?

In 2002, President James E. Faust gave a talk during the priesthood session of general conference. He said, “Your future may not hold fame or fortune, but it can be something far more lasting and fulfilling. Remember that what we do in life echoes in eternity.” Twelve years later in 2014, Nate Checketts co-founded Rhone Apparel, an activewear company for men. He hoped that positive messages on men's apparel could help shape the future of the little men he and his wife, Dayna, are raising. So he began adding messages on the inside of his company's clothes, including this quote by President Faust. On today's episode, we talk with Nate and Dayna about why they are passionate about creating a brand that teaches correct principles. "It is emotionally exhausting to try and decide whether or not you are going to serve in the church, whether or not you're going to read your scriptures that night, whether or not you're going to say a prayer. ...It is so much easier to just be fully committed to the Lord." In this section of Acts, we find Paul in one of his most tumultuous seasons of ministry. Paul and his team face several challenges, yet their poise and response through each of them reveals their passionate focus on the Kingdom Cause. In this message, we discuss how Paul was able to avoid setbacks and confusion, and remained in forward motion. We learn how might adopt these same values and apply them in our own ministries.

Joyriders, Meet Maria! An industrial designer and daily bike commuter since college, Maria wanted to make a product for women who were biking for transportation. She envisioned a better way to carry things on the bike that was both functional and stylish without hiding the fact that these were, in fact, bike bags. Her first Interbike told her that guys were designing products for themselves, and ever since, she's been strongly committed to the idea of equipping women with the gear that they need to integrate biking into their lifestyle and continue to improve the product in service to that mission. LET'S RIDE OUR BIKES TO SEE: Ovarian Psycos at Hollywood Theater: January 28, 2018 @ 7pm From the Community Cycling Center: "The film "Ovarian Psycos" rides along with the Ova's, exploring the impact of the group's activism, born of feminist ideals, Indigenous understanding and an urban/hood mentality, on neighborhood women and communities as they confront injustice, racism, and violence, and take back their streets one ride at a time." From Friends on Bikes: "Ovarian Psyco-Cycles is a women of color cycling group in East L.A. that creates safer streets for women, and gives a voice to those who are disempowered. They inspire us to be strong, resilient and fight for our beliefs as a woman of color." Meet up: Ex Novo @ 5:30 pm. Details here. Friends, you know I believe in the transformative power of the bike, in our personal lives, our communities, and the world at large. I would be super grateful if you'd leave a rating or review in iTunes, Stitcher, or via whatever method you listen. It helps more gals find the show, and I believe the more stories we share, the more women who ride, we make this world - both our internal and external worlds - better with every revolution. Also, I read 5-star reviews out on the show because I love you. Ratings and reviews help with that, but nothing is better than a personal referral, it'd be rad if you would share the show with even just one woman who you think might dig it. Howdy Joyriders! WELCOME TO SEASON THREE! I'm joined on episode 31 by reformed backpacker-turned-bikecamper Dana Kroeck of the blog Blisters and Bugbites! We chat about her love of rail trails, a magical car-free island in..Michigan, and the most unlikely group ride you can possibly imagine. But first.. UPDATES: Bikequity: Money, Class, and Bicycling I'm honored to have been included with some excellent voices in Elly Blue's 14th installment of her feminist bicycling zine Taking The Lane called Bikequity: Money, Class, and Bicycling: Bicycling has the radical potential of equalizing our transportation system, creating more equitable opportunities from the personal to the societal, and being a vehicle for protest and social justice. But that isn't how it always works. The contributors to this volume of Taking the Lane zine tackle of the potentials and realities and unintended consequences of trying to create a better world using human-powered transportation. Edited by Elly Blue and featuring work by Tamika Butler, Adonia Lugo, Do Jun Lee, Gretchin Lair, V.K. Henry, Lauren Hage, Tammy Melody Gomez, Phill Melton, Cat Caperello, Joe Biel, Julie Brooks, Kassandra Karaitis, Katura Reynolds, Rebecca Fish Ewan, Rhienna Renée Guedry, and Adrian Lipscombe. Big thanks to Tim Mooney from the Pedalshift Project for the invitation to join him and the guys from the Sprocket Podcast for a live recording at Stream PDX for the 100th episode of the Pedalshift Project! I was starting to get suuuper sick (hence the jar of orange/ginger/turmeric elixir) but still had a great time chatting with the Tim, Aaron, Guthrie, and Brock (not pictured, on account of him being the photographer) about type 2 fun, bike-it list items, and the future of bike touring. Check it out and let me know what you think! Inspired to Ride Inspired to Ride follows the inaugural TransAm bike race from Oregon to Virginia which took place in 2015. It is an ultra-endurance self-supported race across the entire country. It's mind-blowing what these athletes do to themselves. Y'all. In digging up the trailer for this I discovered that Mike Hall was killed in 2017. He's prominently featured in the film and trailer below. He strikes me as a guy who did exactly what he wanted. May we all have the power to harness our own capabilities. Also the gal who I referenced as a BADASS WOMAN ON A BIKE in the pod is named Juliana Buhring, the Guinness World Record for being the fastest woman to circumnavigate the world on a bicycle and she wrote about Mike in this article for Outside. Here's the trailer. Ride in Peace, Mike. Howdy Joyriders! This is a special show - just in time for Father's Day! One half of the father-daughter duo of fatherdaughtercyclingadventures.com, Jocelyn Rice is with us! On this episode we talk about cycle touring the world (28,000 miles, 37 countries, 33 months! for more awesome stats, click here!) with her dad! Their website features detailed blog posts, and they even have a book! I'm a little sentimental in the intro to this show, friends. It's Father's Day as I type this. I lost my dad, Frank, to pancreatic cancer in 2010. I started really getting into cycling while I was helping to care for him in 2009 after moving back to New Jersey from living in upstate New York. That was the summer I got my first real bike, and Lance Armstrong's return to the TdF was super heroic and personally inspiring. I watched Le Tour, and would go on rides, pushing out the mileage to explore more and go further. In no small way, this time was instrumental in the reclamation of my life and health. I talked about that with Brock and Aaron from the Sprocket Podcast here. I used to ride on the D&R Canal Tow Path a lot, and my dad told me a story about how when he was a Boy Scout, he and his troop went on a bike overnight! They took the D&R Canal up, probably to its' terminus in Frenchtown, camped overnight, and then came back the next day. I thought that was really cool, and he thought my new interest in bikes was really cool. Check out some vintage posts about this time from my other life here, here, and here. Later, while cleaning out my parents house, I found this fantastic photo. I believe this photo was taken in front of the New Jersey National Guard Armory in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. After my father passed away (on my birthday, actually) in 2010, I ended up selling some of his workshop tools on Craigslist and to a friend of the family. I used a few bucks from that to purchase my treasured Ortlieb roll-top panniers and my Apex tent in 2011 for my first bike tour - the Midway to Cape May ride. (Read about that here, here, and here. I talked about that ride with Tim from Pedalshift here.) These are essential pieces of gear, and in this way, I am still held and supported by my dad. In this way, he gets to join me on every bike camping experience. While I wish it could have been more, I am so thankful. Oh, one cool coincidence is that Jocelyn is from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and her dad is an electrical engineer who worked on the Space Shuttle program. My dad was a computer guy who worked as a consultant on some component (a camera, I think?) that is on the Lunar Rover. Something my dad worked on is on the friggin Moon right now. How cool is that? Here's a moody-looking pic of him (complete with early 80's jorts - wonder where I get it from?) in front of a LVR replica taken at the Kennedy Space Center. Miss you, Pops* Happy Fathers Day. Xo Now, Let's Meet Jocelyn Rice! Here's a great pic of Jocelyn and her dad on tour: Some topics discussed in this episode in no particular order: Jocelyn's first bike tour was in fifth grade! Howdy Joyriders! Welcome our first returning guest! Friend of the show Jasmine Reese is back! We first met Jasmine back on episode #4 of The Joyride, that was a vintage, launch week episode and a whole lot has happened since! Jasmine has pedaled more than 14,000 miles across North America with her lovely fur baby and best friend, Fiji, and met countless kind souls and fiddle strings along the way. On this episode we talk about barter culture and the kindness of others, her favorite stretch of road, why she's transitioning to a recumbent trike, and plans for Jasmine and Fiji's next epic adventure. Learn all about Jasmine and Fiji's adventures over the years at FiJaPAW.com (short for Jasmine and Fiji Pedal Around the World) and click here to read her journals! The Pedalshift Project 069: Jasmine and Fiji bicycle the world, living the vagabond life. Recently, Jasmine was featured on USA Today. Check out the article here! Before we get into that, a few things: >> First, it is June, and in Portland where every month is bike month, June is something special because of Pedalpalooza, a month long celebration where community members organize different themed rides. I went to the kick off ride this year and was so glad that I did! I ran into a gal who came on the bike camping trip that I co-hosted with friend of the show Mollie Futterman (Joyride003) last year. We had a great time rolling around Portland, including taking the lane on a few bridges with a few hundred new friends. Yes, there was one or two disgruntled motorists and I did feel bad for them. Traffic here sucks already, and you then add in all the extra riders that the sun draws out, and a whole calendar of rides all month long, and well….. Might I suggest cycling? Anywhoo Joyriders, maybe one of these bike fun events will inspire you to organize something cool in your town. I will be attending the Bikecamping 101 ride on June 12. Say Hi if you see me. >>If you're listening to this within a few weeks of the release, June 2017, there's still time to get in on the WomenBikePDX Bike Camping for beginners. That's happening solstice weekend, it's for women and women identified folk, hosted by me, yours truly. it's a 24 mile casual ride suitable for any skill level, $10-$15 sliding scale includes camping, firewood, two meals, and a whole lotta good company. We're having an info session on June 13 at the Street Trust formerly known as BTA on NW Glisan in Portland. Join the Women Bike PDX Facebook group and register here. It's gonna be rad. >> Speaking of Rad, you might recall when Aqua Dublavee and I were having Coffee Outside a few shows back on Ep 24, I mentioned that Veni Vidi Velo was not happening this year, but I am so pleased to report that this is no longer true! V3 IS Happening it's the first weekend in August. it's for women trans femme bike glamping weekend in the Portland area. I will not be there this year, unfortunately, but I think YOU should go, and have a fantastic time. Email venividivelo[at]gmail[dot]com for questions or to register. Jasmine Reese! Howdy Joyriders! On this episode of The Joyride, it is my great pleasure to introduce you all to a dear friend of mine, Caryn Grunewald. On this episode, we hang out at the Bluffs and chat about her new ride affectionately known as QueenB, the shopping experience, going fast, how to carry stuff including our pups!, random parking lots in North Portland, stump town cold brew, and what backgammon, bikes, and South America have in common. Howdy Joyriders! On this episode of The Joyride, I chat with the one and only Ayesha McGowan, who you may also know as A Quick Brown Fox. You may remember her name first mentioned by guest Monica Garrison, Founder of Black Girls Do Bike, back on episode #8 of the Joyride. Ayesha discovered competitive cycling in 2014 and has since been on a mission to become the first professional female african american road cyclist. Ayesha has been featured in Bicycling Magazine, Bicycle Times, BBC World, and Vice Sports. In other news, I want to give a quick shout out to Brock and Aaron of the Sprocket Podcast who kindly hosted me as a guest on their show last week. We talked about GirlEatsBike, Portland, and of course women on bikes. I had a lot of fun chatting with them and getting a behind-the-scenes look at how other podcasters make stuff happen. Link to that right here! I'm so excited about this show, folks. I've been following Ayesha for a while and am totally stoked to get to hear about her journey. On this episode of the Joyride we'll hear about Ayesha's evolution from commuting into advocacy and then competitive racing, using the bike to conquer your fears. inception of A Quick Brown Fox, as well as the Do Better Together rides, and why building community is so important. Meet Aqua! Howdy Joyriders! On this episode of The Joyride, I meet up with Aqua Dublavee for a long-awaited coffee outside. On this super conversational episode, we talk about the magnetic pull of Portland Oregon, talk about tips for finding your tribe, I confess about passive aggressive responses to road rage, and we do LOTS of day dreaming about bike camping. This show is a little different folks - it's the first time I've recorded face to face as well as outside with all of the elements you might expect to hear in an urban park. You'll get some ambiance like birds and the sound of camp stoves, as well as some guy yelling in the background, and there's a fairly loud fountain nearby! I tried to clean it up to have our voices stand out as strongly as possible, but I apologize in advance if it's hard for anyone to hear. First time, ya know? Meet Julie! Howdy Joyriders! On today's show I chat with Julie Brooks, creatrix of the Pedal by Pedal zine about women over 40 who ride bicycles. We'll chat about the inspiration for the book, going the distance... seasonally… and milkshakes. I'm not gonna lie - this show is like an Elly Blue love fest - if you're new to the show, you can check out Elly on episode six of the Joyride here. As you may know, Elly's work is close to my heart in many ways, herlatest project, Biketopia features stories from a dozen writers each with their own take on utopia, dystopia, and the gray area in between. The project is currently up on Kickstarter - and it has been funded, so the books are on the way, but you'll still have like 10 days or so to get in as a backer. Do it. Also, you'll hear Julie and I talk about a piece in Pedal by Pedal by a woman named Taz Loomans about her experience as a woman of color on the bike, and I want to elaborate on something I hinted towards in my conversation with Julie - which is this - if you're recently waking up to how entrenched and f'd up institutionalized biases and systemic racism, awesome. Welcome to woke side. Things are going to be pretty uncomfortable for a minute because you never realized how awful they were before, but, in order to affect change you have to take responsibility for how you move through the world and how it impacts the people around you. Me, for example? I want to take responsibility for the media I create as part of this community. One small way I can do that is to take a moment to read an excerpt from Taz's piece. I don't read the whole thing, but in it, Taz examines her budding disillusionment with critical thinking, the result of which is a provocative assessment that should be more than enough for self-proclaimed progressive bikelandian to take a long hard look in the mirror. I've invited Taz to be a guest on the show and hopefully we can dig in further. Here are links to some of the topics discussed in this show: 1:00 Shout out to our shero Elly Blue!
