I 100% believe that my sport is an individual sport, but it took a whole bunch of people to get me to that start line.""In distance running, the crowds, they have personality. In this episode, Steve McGregor, Managing Director of McGregor Removals & Storage, discusses how he returned to the industry in 2013 to start his own business, even though as a third-generation remover he swore he would never be involved in Removals! McGregor Removals & Storage is based in Belfast, Northern Ireland and offer removals, storage, distribution and packing services, covering the whole of the UK and Ireland, focusing primarily on customer service, and in January 2025 have started an international shipping service. Fleet wise McGregor Removals & Storage operate a fleet of 9 vehicles and are not brand loyal in the slightest, and storage wise they have a 16,000 sqft warehouse. Apart from the everyday challenge of removals, Steve's challenges have been staff and recruitment, switching off and detaching when away from the workplace, and accepting that you cannot change bad attitude. The one thing Steve would change from his moving past would have been to network earlier, which would have taken McGregor Removals & Storage further and faster. Steve has several high points of being within the industry, becoming a member of BAR (British Association of Removers), moving Dame Kelly Holmes, and the excitement from Steve's children, nieces and nephews when they see the vehicles on the road as the vehicles are named after them. The one thing Steve would like to change within the industry is to have a more structured sales process. The advice Steve would give himself just starting out within the industry again is to network earlier and do more homework on the industry. In the next 5 years Steve wants to continue to grow the McGregor brand. Industry wise, Steve sees technology playing a big part. Outside of the industry Steve spends time with his two daughters, the challenge of running, working out at the gym, and has recently bought a boat. And as always, we end Moving Matters with a funny moving story, well two, one involving a tip and the other a sex toy. Enjoy! Staying hydrated for training and racing can give you hidden benefits. It's very easy to become dehydrated and not realise. Performance improvements and recovery gains from hydration. Resource: Home Made Sport Drink Recipe (below in notes) 3 Value Bombs 1. Daily drink plan for hydration 2. Always use sport drinks while training for electrolyte and carbohydrate intake 3. Drinking caffeine can help on regatta day Timestamps What you are drinking and how to get fluids into your body. It's more than just drinking while training, off the water drinking matters too. 01:00 Daily Drink Plan. Start with a glass of water when you wake up in the morning. Every time you have a meal or snack, have another glass of water. Snacks might be mid-morning or mid-afternoon. Get into the habit of 2 litres of fluid a day - this includes any hot drink, shake or smoothie count too. Keep a record of your hydration - cricket notation makes it easy to see each 5 glasses of water you have. 02:30 Before during and after training sessions hydration is needed as well. Drinks need carbohydrate and electrolytes in them. This is part of your recovery from exercise. Carbohydrates help you maximise energy levels to maintain intensity through to the end of a workout. Training works to provoke adaptations. Electrolytes are minerals which get lost through sweat. The air temperature during exercise affects your feeling of thirst. Do not rely on your sensation of thirst - anticipate your hydration needs before you feel thirsty. 06:00 Caffeine drinks - these are worthy of your consideration because caffeine is a stimulant. I drank a half and half Red Bull and water at a regatta when I had a lot of races. I'd learned that Dame Kelly Holmes used this for her race day hydration. 09:45 Race day caffeine use Use sports drink only on regatta days. Use either caffeinated drinks or tablets (noDoze or Pro Plus). Have caffeine every 2-3 hours while racing - half a can of drink 30-40 minutes before your first race or half a caffeine tablet. 11:15 Home made Sports Drink Recipe From Nancy Clark's Sport Nutrition Guidebook affiliate link to buy https://amzn.to/3z6023E Flavoured with orange juice and lemon juice or cranberry/lemonade. 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup hot water 1/4 cup Orange juice (not concentrate) 2 tablespoons Lemon juice 3.5 cups of cold water. I'm thrilled to announce that Season 5 of my Style DNA podcast is launching with double Olympic champion, global inspirational and motivational speaker, TV presenter and Author …the simply AWESOME Honorary Colonel Dame Kelly Holmes MBE.   I loved our conversation in which we discussed the fact that Kelly spent the best part of the first 30 years of her life in one uniform or another (school, track and military)  and how she didn't even really think about her personal style before then… Emerging from a life lived in a uniform she chose to wear clothes to fit in and be less visible until… she came out. She credits the turning point for her being her authentic self started on the morning of her mother's funeral. She sat in her hairdresser's chair and had the side of her head shaved …citing that she had a choice that her mother didn't have any longer and knowing that her mother really wanted her to live her true life… this was clearly a catalytic moment for her.  Since coming out she has discovered her passion for style, colour and simply joyful dressing.   We talk about Imposter Syndrome …yes even someone with all of Kelly's achievements can experience Imposter Syndrome (a lesson there?) …and how surprisingly, a run in panto helped her overcome this…   Kelly radiates health and happiness… her face is as warm and open as her heart is …she is a true beauty inside and out and I really appreciate her transparency and openness in sharing her lessons that have been learned (like the most important ones often are)…the hard way. Thank you @damekellyholmes for sharing your feelings, your stories and your insights so generously …you certainly are UNIQUE (and huge, well deserved congratulations on the success of your memoir…Unique)

In the second special celebrity episode of Why Care? I am joined by the multi-talented, Double Olympic Champion, Dame Kelly Holmes. We dive deeper into her  journey of self-discovery, personal experiences, and traumas, which she explores in her powerful memoir Unique. Kelly shares her emotional backstory in which she concealed her true identity and sexuality from the public and lived in fear for most of her life. We discuss the discriminatory military laws and systemic mistreatment of LGBTQ+ individuals in the British army, as well as the mental health impact. As a world-class athlete, Kelly opens up about the pressure to hide her sexuality, and how she overcame her fears and revealed her authentic self publicly. Kelly then shares her experiences attending a Pride event, becoming part of a supportive community, and about her LGBTQ+ advocacy work. At 18, Kelly pursued her dream to be an HGV driver and Physical Training Instructor in the British Army. In 1998, she was awarded a MBE for her services to the British Army and in 2018 became the first individual to be appointed Honorary Colonel to a regular unit. Meanwhile, Kelly also pursued her Olympic dream and was catapulted to fame in 2004 at the Athens Olympic Games for being the first woman ever in Great Britain to win two gold medals at the same games. She continued to raise the bar as an Olympic, Commonwealth, and European champion, achieving seven Gold, eight Silver, and four Bronze medals. She also won BBC Sports Personality of the Year and European Athlete of the Year. During the episode, Kelly shares her experiences of concealing her true identity and the fear she faced in revealing her sexuality to the public. She highlights the importance of education, understanding, acceptance, and authenticity regarding LGBTQ+ issues and the need to normalise attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community. As Kelly recounts her extraordinary life story, she uncovers her experiences in the military, the traumatic military raids, and discriminatory laws targeting LGBTQ+ individuals. She then exposes the wider systemic discrimination in the military and the psychological traumas and mental health issues it caused, which she explored in her ITV documentary, Kelly Holmes: Being Me. As she developed her public persona as an international Olympic champion and world-class athlete, Kelly opens up about her fear of not being accepted for her sexuality and her anxiety about how this could impact her achievements. As she juggled her dual identity, she used defensive methods and was careful about how she projected herself to avoid judgment. Kelly then went on a journey of self-discovery, and at the age of 50, she finally accepted herself and came out about her sexuality. She embraced her true identity publicly the 2022 London Pride event, which was a powerful moment for her. Kelly acknowledges the pressures, challenges, and complexities of the coming out process, and uses her platform as an opportunity to combat stereotypes and to be an advocate for change. As a motivational speaker, Kelly shares how she connects with and inspires people through her personal experiences, but realises that her sexuality is just one aspect of her life. Now she has found happiness and inner peace, she focuses on her work and achievements and recognises the freedom of living authentically in a world where she can be proud to be herself, without the need for validation. American women are starting this week with a newly re-drawn map of the United States, in light of the Supreme Court's landmark overturning of Roe vs Wade last Friday, which gave women constitutional right to get an abortion nationwide. Today, abortion is legally banned in at least nine US states - with more to follow as so called trigger laws clear the necessary hurdles. For some this is a time of huge shame, sorrow, bafflement and fear - the clock turned back on women's rights. For others - the supreme court's decision represents a victory - the success of a long fought battle against abortion being a nationwide right in America. But for women who are pregnant now and don't want to be - especially in states where even abortion providers are unclear if they will be prosecuted should they go ahead - what should they do? Emma hears from BBC correspondent in Washington DC Holly Honderich, journalist Hadley Freeman and Dr Jan Halper-Hayes, former Global Vice President for Republican Overseas.
