Holly Dunn is originally from Colorado. She started racing around 1982. Her Brother chad raced and she soon followed. Her first race was at Boothill BMX. Soon after she started racing her family moved to Arizona. Moving to AZ really kicked off her racing. The first team she rode for was Bike Barn. Dunn says she raced the boys most times. She says it was normal for her and her brother to hit three local races each day on weekends.  Dunn says hitting the national circuit soon followed. Her first factory team that sent all over the country was called ESP. Literally Dunn says she hit every race she could. The one thing she told she never worried about was burn out. Leaving ESP she went to Pedal Power for a short stint and eventually landed on the all girl team Titan. Eventually Dunn walked away from BMX. Before coming back in 2015 she would have two kids with freestyle legend Jim Burgess and living a bit of life. By 2018 Dunn said she enough is enough and moved on from BMX again. But like I say "Once BMX is in your blood it's hard to stay away." Dunn is back racing again on a part time bases. She even qualified for worlds this year. In this interview we also touch on her friendship with Robert Raymonde, losing Burgess, and her desire to continue racing. The Great AntidoteAdam Smith said, "Science is the great antidote to the poison of enthusiasm and...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify

How do we stay up when we ride a bicycle? Lots of us can do it without even thinking about it, but probably very few of us can say exactly HOW we do it. Well, CrowdScience listener Arif and his children Maryam and Mohammed from India want to understand what's going on in our heads when go for a cycle, and how we learn to do it in the first place. Presenter Marnie Chesterton is on the case, tracking down a neuroscientist studying how our brains and bodies work together to keep us balanced whether we're walking or trying to ride a bicycle. She learns about the quirks of bicycle engineering from researchers in the Netherlands who are part of a lab entirely devoted to answering this question. In the process falling off of some unusual bicycles and uncovering the surprising truth that physics might not yet have a proper answer. And we peer deeper into our brains to find out why some memories last longer than others, whether some people can learn quicker than others and the best way to learn a new skill. Presented by Marnie Chesterton and Produced by Emily Bird for the BBC World Service. Featuring: Kathleen Cullen, Johns Hopkins University, USA Jason Moore, University of Technology Delft, The Netherlands Lara Boyd, University of British Columbia, Canada Rado Dukalski, University of Technology Delft, The Netherlands Josie and Freesia, Pedal Power

What is climate grief? Many of us carry a lot of grief that we are part of a culture that we can't live into a more wholesome and life-giving framework for how to exist. We need a way to live that will allow us to process the anguish of knowing that we are a part of harmful ways of living, and even maintain our  sanity in the face of those hard truths. And for Ben Wyse (Wyse Cycles), the bicycle is part of that. It is a spiritual discipline. "The lifestyle patterns we choose that we have grown up in cause suffering in the world, and if we are not willing to make changes in our lifestyle, then how do we make sense of the grief that we carry in what we represent in the world? It's a question of longing for something better, and what are the disciplines we have that express what is central to our very identity and ethical framework?" In this conversation, Ben Wyse of Wyse Cycles, a mobile bike repair shop in Harrisonburg that seeks to empower families and commuter cyclists with the tools they need to replace fossil fuel transportation with pedal-powered movement.  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wild-honey-collective/message

Jessie in her own words:   “It would be a lie to say that I have always been aware of the climate crisis, because I haven't. Frankly, that is the problem.   Whilst always enjoying spending time in nature whether that be up at our allotment or walking on the wilds of Dartmoor right on my doorstep, it was only a few years ago that I became aware of the dire straights our climate is in.   It was at this moment that like many youth activists, I began to realise that I really had no choice but to fight for it. This didn't mean that it necessarily was something I wanted to do, because most young people just want a care free experience as they grow and develop, and activism is certainly not these things. However, I felt a duty to do this, because the vast majority of adults around me and in society were choosing not to.   It was then that I decided to create People Pedal Power and cycle to COP26 both as a personal challenge and as a way to bring the many individuals concerned about the Climate Crisis together. As a way to highlight the power and joy that is created when people come together to create change.   I am a youth activist who cares deeply about the power of people to create change and this is exactly what I want People Pedal Power to do. The idea to start the movement came from my fears that more inaction would come from this upcoming COP. I knew that we didn't have time for this to occur, as this summit has to be the one where real change is created, if not by our leaders but by the power of individuals creating collective action. As can be seen from the youth climate movement across the world, individuals really do have the power to create change, and so I decided to harness this!   I also believe in the immense power that words and storytelling have in helping us as individual to learn, understand and ultimately engage in the climate crisis. I have been trying to do this for the past 2 years with my monthly newspaper columns and other writing projects which discuss the climate crisis from the youth perspective.”   New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday at 7am UK time - Hit the subscribe button so you don't miss out.    The Tough Girl Podcast is sponsorship and ad free thanks to the monthly financial support of patrons.    Support the mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media. “This whole lockdown period has definitely given a lot of people the ability to get out there and try it and get comfortable with it [cycling].” To see the centre of London almost car free was surreal during the peak of the lockdowns. But for me, like many other cyclists, this was an opportunity to reclaim London's previously vehicle choked streets. So last May, I got myself a foldable bicycle, a Tern (I can recommend it) and discovered East Central Cycles, an independent bicycle shop in Exmouth Market, Clerkenwell, which had one in stock. Visiting the shop, it soon became clear that the lockdown had completely changed the operation of the business. I caught up with Charlie, one of the four founders of the store, when I returned to get my bike serviced, and we grabbed a park bench for a chat. We chatted setting up the shop with four friends; competing against the big chains; hipsters and the custom bike trend; meeting the challenges of lockdown and the resurgence of cycling in London; and Charlie's favourite areas of London including exploring its backstreets. O acaso o levou a comprar uma MTB ainda rudimentar para se locomover quando passava um tempo nos EUA. Foi tomando gosto pelas pedaladas mas principalmente pela diversão proporcionada pela magrela. Call it affordable, sustainable transportation. Call it public health. Ralph Buehler in his book City Cycling, emphasizes that bicycling shouldn’t be limited to those who are trained, fit, and daring enough to battle traffic on busy roads. Also featured: In an effort to curb pollution and congestion, cities across the U.S. have adopted bike share programs, and now colleges and universities are following suit. Eddie Hill and Bridget Nemeth started a bike share program on the campus of Old Dominion University, which offers free bikes to students. And: The electric bicycle, or e-bike, is growing in popularity and creating jobs. Jerry Franklin takes us on a spin through the world of e-bikes. Plus: Many runners today are taking off their shoes in favor of barefoot running. Silvia Blemker and Geoffrey Handsfield are mapping the muscles to learn how running barefoot compares to running with shoes. Later in the show: Psychologist Andrew Velkey describes the foraging behavior of men and women drivers searching for parking spaces. There are the “perchers” and then there are the “soarers.” Plus: The song “John Henry” is one of the most popular in American history, but for years nobody knew whether the legendary railroad tunneler was a real person or simply a tall tale. Scott Reynolds Nelson discovered a historic record of a railroad worker named John Henry, who was buried secretly by the Richmond Penitentiary.

Wright State University Newsroom

http://wright.edu/news Dozens of Wright State students, faculty and staff took part in a bike to campus breakfast on May 18. When the bikers arrived at the Student Union Atrium they were greeted with a healthy breakfast. The morning event was organized by Wright State's Office of Campus Recreation and the Department of Environmental Health and Safety. “Wright State has a great location for riding bikes. We’re right on the largest interconnected bike path system in the country. Now with the pedestrian bridge going up over Interstate 675 we are even more connected to that system,” said Amy Anslinger, Outdoor Recreation assistant director. Anslinger says that biking to work is a great form of exercise and adds fewer emissions into the environment and reduces traffic congestion. USA - CBS News Sunday Morning ran a thorough piece on bicycle transportation and covered Portland extensively including a brief segment with yours truly and my boyz rolling the “bike train”. There is also some great coverage of Portland Transportation Commissioner (and mayor elect) Sam Adams, Alta Planning’s Mia Birk, and visit at Clever Cycles. Sorry the footage is a bit grainy. I pulled from the show from my old VCR and Channel 6 doesn't come in so well at my house. (CBS) "Pedal Power" is coming into its own these days, as Americans of all ages are coming to realize biking can be practical, economical, and good clean fun - or should we say, good GREEN fun? Our Cover Story takes us from California to Cambridge, and is reported by Serena Altschul: See the full story at CBSnews.com.
