Melissa Luci from Alexander Valley Hops and Fal Allen of Anderson Valley Brewing Co. visit Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras. Fal Allen has been on the show many times, the last time was this May 13, 2021 episode. It is hop harvest season right now, as Melissa describes. Hops grow as long vines and need tall poles and wires to climb. A field of hops looks like a plantation of telephone poles. Hops were grown from the late 1800s to about 1950 when the price collapsed. Alexander Valley Hops started in 2019 on a very long and skinny lot. They have an active Instagram page. The hops grow up poles that are 18-20 feet high. There is a top wire at that height. They want the plant (called bines) to reach that height by the summer solstice. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. The Lost Coast Fresh Hops Festival On Saturday, October 14, from 2-8 PM is the Lost Coast Fresh Hops Festival, in Shelter Cove, CA. Here is their link on Brown Paper Tickets. All of the breweries up there have made a beer out of Alexander Valley Hop Farm's Chinook hops which thlost cey will open at the festival. For fresh hops, they need about 100 lbs for an 8 barrel batch. They try to use them within 24 hours. They give flavor and aroma that is very green, something that you can't get with dry hops. Mad River Brewing is one of the sponsoring breweries. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Fal Allen has brought a bunch of Anderson Valley Brewing Co. beers. A lot of people were IPA obsessed for a few years, and that pendulum seems to be swinging back, so Pilsners are more and more popular now. They are tasting a Russian River Brewing Co. Hop Time Pale Ale which is made with fresh local hops, once a year at hop harvest. AVBC is also participating in a cooperative brewing project to benefit Maui. One is called Salted Caramel Porter. It's a 9.5% ABV beer that Fal describes as a dessert beer. If you like espresso and chocolate, you may like it. Herlinda travels a lot and she will be in New York, Lithuania then Singapore. Alexander Valley Hops served 16 breweries this year, the most ever for them.

Each of us, even the youngest, has experienced grief: the loss of a pet, a home, a job, a parent, a child, a friend -- each requires a certain amount of processing, and The Grief Dialogues can help. Starting with a single entry in Island Theatre's 10-Minute Play Festival, The Grief Dialogues now constitute 6 plays, which will be performed here at BIMA on June 15th before going on to Seattle and New York City. Listen here as playwright Elizabeth Coplan, founder of this series of plays and author of one of them, explains their success. Inspired by stories of dying, death, and grief, the Dialogues have been shown in venues across the country, and use theatre to help facilitate conversation about this shadowy and near-taboo topic. Exploring the situations, relationships, emotions, aftermath, and logistics of death, the plays combine humor, heartbreak, and reality to offer an honest and provocative look at this difficult subject. With the help of Dr. Sharon Stanley of Bainbridge Island, who will be present after the performance for a question and answer period, the plays can help audience members vocalize and process their own experiences with grief and loss. Ms. Coplan, Dr. Stanley, and the actors hope that this new conversation about dying, death, and grief will lead to a better understanding of these and aid in closure after an event. Dr. Stanley and the plays' director, Wesley Fruge, were recently interviewed on Q13's "This Morning" show by Travis Mayfield, who will MC the Dialogues. To access those interviews, visit: https://youtu.be/arywHohSJy0 and https://youtu.be/sAkjio2LDvc. The Grief Dialogues will be presented June 15 at BIMA in the Frank Buxton Auditorium. There is a reception for ticket holders at 6 pm; the show begins at 7pm. The plays move on to Seattle in June and then to New York City, for a presentation with the Dramatist Guild. For tickets for the Bainbridge performance visit BrownPaperTickets.com. Tickets for the Seattle showings (June 18,19,26, and 27, 18th and Union Theater at 7:30) are also available at BrownPaperTickets.com. This year's festival preview will feature nine short films - documentaries, narratives and an animated film - to exemplify the depth and passion of the 88 films from 14 countries that will be featured at the festival, now in its 18th year. The preview is a great opportunity for us to see some of the shorts that will be paired with full length films at the festival. In this podcast, Janette gives us a rundown of the diverse films in the preview screening. Their stories are unique and thought provoking, from Johanna Under the Ice, a documentary about a woman who deep dives through ice, to High Chapparal, a Swedish film about a Wild West theme park converted to a camp for refugees.  You won't want to miss these extraordinary films, which are unlikely to be seen anywhere else. A complete list of the films at the preview on September 6th: "Johanna Under the Ice" - Directed by Ian Derry "The Card Shark" - Directed by Rex Carter "Legal Smuggling with Christine Choy" - Directed by Lewie Kloster "High Chapparal" - Directed by David Freid "Jonah" - Directed by Andrew Michael Ellis "Slacker" - Directed by Max Lowe "The Counselor" - Directed by Guy Bauer "Odd Ball" - Directed by Joshua Moore "Denali's Raven" - Directed by Renan Ozturk The preview program begins at 7 pm with two screening segments -- each about 30 minutes -- separated by an intermission, with tasty treats provided by the museum's bistro. Listen in on Kate Carruthers' fascinating conversation with BCB host Channie Peters. You'll hear about Kate's love for theatre, which has been a strong thread throughout her life, even during her very successful career as an attorney and Bainbridge Island's municipal judge. Theatre has been Kate's first love since her first high school play and her years majoring in theatre in college. Her intention to continue theatre arts in graduate school was sidetracked by the need to embark on a career that would support herself and two young daughters. She describes her choice of a legal career, and how she found legal practice to be similar, and yet complementary, to her love for staging plays. How does an aspiring actor/director decide to make a career as an attorney, partner in a prestigious Seattle law firm, lead a private practice here on Bainbridge, and later serve as our municipal judge? Throughout it all, Kate found time to raise two daughters, start a theatre company, and direct many noteworthy plays for Bainbridge Performing Arts. Her credits are many and varied. A few are: "The Kentucky Cycle", "Philadelphia Story", "Snow Falling on Cedars", "Amadeus", and "Much Ado About Nothing" (performed outdoors at the Bloedel Reserve). This podcast will enable you to hear how, in Kate's life, theater has provided deep meaning and a vehicle for artistic expression. No wonder she is being honored by Arts and Humanities Bainbridge as one of this year's two Island Treasures. The annual tradition of recognizing two exceptional contributors to local arts are humanities dates back to the year 2000. The Island Treasure Award ceremony will be Saturday February 18 at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art. It begins with wine and hors d'oeuvres at 6:15 pm, with the awards ceremony at 6:40 and a reception at 7:30. Tickets can be purchased at Brown Paper Tickets online here. Seating is very limited. She will also offer a workshop on August 13th. In this 9-minute podcast interview, the author explains that having strategies for bringing forth our inner creativity, whether for writers or artists in any medium, is not unlike any athlete who trains with exercises that are both physical and mental. And this will be the subject of her lecture, relevant to anyone aspiring to be more creative. Copies of her book will be available for purchase and signing after the lecture. Jane has also been a teacher for over 20 years, and is a former president of the International Surface Design Association. "Surface design" in this context applies to the design of the patterns and textures on the surfaces of textiles (including, for example, quilts). In this interview, Jane also talks about the workshop she will be giving on August 13th that will incorporate principles from her extensive experience teaching surface design techniques that have a broad application beyond quilting. In our BCB podcast studio, two board members of the BI Modern Quilt Guild, Kerry Smith and Kathy Dwyer, also tell us about the Guild and about the upcoming Quilt Festival on September 10th. The Port Townsend Film Festival will be bringing to the BI Museum of Art “The Cherokee Word for Water” on January 29th. In this podcast, the film is described with personal insights by PTFF Executive Director Janette Force. This full-length feature film is about the extraordinary life and work of Wilma Mankiller, the first woman to lead the Cherokee Nation as its Chief. The inspiring story of how a young woman and mother became a community activist, leader, statesman, and widely respected human rights advocate for the Cherokee Nation, is depicted in this film by producers Kristina Kiehl and Charlie Soap. Charlie is also her surviving husband. Mankiller is credited with “revitalizing the Cherokee Nation's tribal government, improving its education, health and housing.” Her administration founded the Cherokee Nation Community Development Department, and by obtaining Federal funding, they were able to complete community development projects including establishing tribally owned businesses, improving infrastructure (most notably, providing running water to the community of Bell, Oklahoma), and building a hydroelectric facility. Her skill as a statesman, as well as community organizer, improved federal-tribal negotiations. In 1998, President Bill Clinton awarded Ms. Mankiller the Presidential Medal of Freedom, this nation's highest civilian honor. She has also received numerous other awards. The Cherokee Word for Water, tells the story of the Bell waterline project that helped launch Mankiller's political career, and was also the start of her friendship with her future husband, Charlie Soap, who has seen this film project to completion. The film, produced by Kristina Kiehl in 2013, has screened at the American Indian Film Festival, San Francisco; at the United Nations; the U.S. Capitol; and more than 300 times at colleges, tribal communities and at other venues across the U.S. In 2015, it was voted the top American Indian film of the past 40 years in a survey by the American Indian Film Institute. Producers Charlie Soap and Kristina Kiehl will both be at the film showing at BIMA to speak and answer questions. Admission is free, but reservations are encouraged, as seating is limited. Chris speaks with BCB's Lyssa Danehy deHart about the very first Bainbridge Island Comedy Festival, which is set for 7:30 pm on the evenings of Friday and Saturday, July 11th and 12th. The venue is the Spacecraft Theatre in Rolling Bay Hall, at 10598 Valley RD NE, on Bainbridge Island. The two-evening festival is aimed at bringing together the best local comedic talent that Bainbridge Island has to offer. They'll be showcasing their ability in stand-up, sketch comedy, musical comedy, improv and much more. There will be a unique and different program on each of the two nights of the festival. The festival is the first of its kind on Bainbridge Island and for its debut year has gotten some of the best local performing groups to headline the event. This year, “The Edge” improv group and the “Not Applicable” student improv will be featured.
