I've chosen the Perdomo Lot 23 Maduro for today's International Cigar Lightation Ceremony. This cigar features 5-year aged higher-priming Cuban-seed Nicaraguan Maduro wrapper combined with 5-year aged Cuban-seed Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos.
We get in the mental health crisis the COVID shutdown is causing. Bill lightens the mood with some astronomy news. We have the Perdomo Lot 23 Connecticut and sip some 4 Roses Bourbon.
The Perdomo Lot 23 Maduro is a cigar that made it onto the CigarScore Top 10 Cigars Under $10 list, so when I had a chance to review the Connecticut of the same line, I took it.Cigar Taxes by State: https://www.cigarscore.com/states-with-the-highest-tobacco-taxes/Top 10 Breakfast Cigars: https://www.cigarscore.com/top-10-breakfast-cigars-to-pair-with-coffee/Perdomo cigars, a.k.a. Tabacalera Perdomo is known for two things, making great cigars and being budget-friendly. Also, if you're looking for cigars aged in bourbon barrels, Perdomo has been doing that for years. It's the #PerdomoWay.NOTE: According to the Perdomo website, "Perdomo Cigars is the only cigar manufacturer to completely absorb the punitive SCHIP federal excise tax on all of its brands, and we will continue to do so. As a family business, we have held our prices and in many cases reduced them in order to be extremely competitive. "The Perdomo Lot 23 Connecticut Robusto is a budget-friendly cigar that I plan on comparing to the Perdomo Champagne, after all, they've got similar tobaccos inside. After punching the end, the draw of the Lot 23 was loose, and the flavors I could taste before lighting the cigar were of dried grass.CigarScore Merch!: https://click.cigarscore.com/merchytUse coupon code CIGARSCORETV to get 15% OFF!Brand: PerdomoLine: Lot 23, ConnecticutSize: 5 x 50Cut: PunchLight: TorchPrice: $6.50Wrapper: Nicaraguan Connecticut ShadeBinder: NicaraguaFiller: NicaraguaSmoke Time: 62 minutesBuy This Cigar: https://click.cigarscore.com/fs-perdomo-lot23Through the middle third of the cigar, the draw of the Lot 23 was perfect. The flavors, however, were fairly basic, reminiscent of licking construction paper, but there is some spice on the retrohale. While Perdomo Lot 23 Connecticut Robusto is a decent cigar in its own right, a budget Champagne it is not.Final Thoughts:Overall, the construction and build quality of the Perdomo Lot 23 Connecticut Robusto was fantastic. While the flavors were fairly mild and mellow, they were pretty good also, and there was no harshness until the final third. No bitter flavors presented themselves. The Perdomo Lot 23 Connecticut Robusto is a budget-friendly cigar that delivers a solid performance. Although it might not have the richness and complexity a seasoned smoker might look for, it's still a cigar anyone would be happy to have in their humidor. For these reasons, the Perdomo Lot 23 Connecticut Robusto earns a CigarScore 3.#CigarScoreTV #Perdomo:::::Find & Rate Where to Smoke Cigars at https://www.cigarscore.comCIGAR DEALS::::::Cigar 5-Packs: https://jo.my/mlunpiCigar 10-Packs: https://jo.my/8kfajfCigar Samplers: https://jo.my/oady8qBoveda Packs: https://jo.my/fbtwzr:::::Get CigarScore Emails - https://www.cigarscore.com/subscribe::::: SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cigarscoreTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/cigarscoreInstagram: https://Instagram.com/cigarscoreMy Music: https://www.ellorywells.com/soundstripe::::: AFFILIATE DISCLAIMER: Hey, so, some of the links in my videos and descriptions are affiliate links. This week the Cigar of the Week is the San Lotano Maduro by A.J. Fernandez. The cigar featured on the "What's My Band?" blind smoke test is the Perdomo Lot 23, suggested by listener Dan Crouch. In the "What's hot? What's not? What's next?" segment of the show, Liz interviews Luis Molina, General Manager of the Habana Port Cigar Merchants in Covington, LA. A special thanks to listener Dan Lawson for putting Liz in contact with Luis. Bob and Dale receive answers to their questions regarding available sizes of last week's Cigar of the Week, the Curivari. Check out the live show! Go to http://www.cigarmedia.tv/live/ where the show is broadcast live most Friday evenings at 9 PM EST. Do you have a Herf Line Review? Call and leave a cigar review on the herf line and receive a DogWatch Cigar Radio patch! You can reach the Herfline at 321-594-4373 - or cigar.radio on Skype. You can also send written reviews to theshow@cigarmedia.tv. Cigar of the Week - San Lotano Maduro by A.J. Fernandez. San Lotano is the first line from AJ Fernandez NOT to be sold under someone else's banner. Already well known for blends like Man O War and Diesel, AJ has also built a fabulous reputation making cigars for such brands as Rocky Patel and Esteban Carreras. AJ is a master cigar blender and magnificent roller - I saw him roll a cigar on a board balanced on his knee. He has secured enough farmland to begin producing his own tobacco and that means he can now experiment with different varietals and blends so I expect some outstanding new cigars from him very soon. As a matter of fact, last week on the show Dale raved about the new Man O War Puro Authentico (Liz and I saw pre-release boxes in Nicaragua in January). Dark Side - - No Dark Side this week. What else have you been smokin' Dale? Man O War Puro Authentico 5 x 42 Corona - This a wonderfully full bodied, very full flavored cigar with a superbly balanced dark earthy & spicy character. I hesitate to say how magnificent I think this cigar is for fear they will all sell out before I can buy them up! Rich and satisfying with lots of complex flavors, but not much change in those flavors from front to back. Espresso, hazelnuts, pepper and a touch of vanilla bean are evident throughout the cigar. From the middle on, some sandalwood is more obvious and near the end, some cocoa bean. The cigar is powerful without being over-powering. Gurkha Beauty - 6.5” x56 limited edition - The complimentary cigar to the Gurkha Beast, this behemoth is filled with 5 yr old premium long fillers wrapped in a 7 yr old Ecuadorian grown Connecticut wrapper. Creamy, toasty flavors come across as elegant and refined. Medium bodied, smooth with a heady room aroma. A Conny wrapped cigar I could get behind if it wasn’t so damned big (and pricey). The cigar is packaged in the K. Hansotia style - a large Gurhka band, a second Beauty band over a cedar sleeve, and all resting upright in gold capped glass tubes in a fancy lacquered box. At $695 for a box of 20 (even if there were only 500 boxes made), not a cigar I’ll buy, but one I’d happily smoke if gifted to me again. Punch Rare Corojo 10th Anniversary - The last one from my box, I still think these are good cigars, but not quite up to the regular Rare Corojo line in depth of flavor. Something in the blend just gives me a bit too much of that metallic/astringent component that overtakes the savory flavors, especially in the last half. What else have you been smokin' Bob? Puro Autentico - Allegedly this blend originates from the personal blend of AJ Fernandez himself. I always hesitate when I hear that because the cigar makers that I have spoken with tell me they smoke several different cigars depending on what they may be working on; however, each does have a favorite and I can see why this might be AJ’s favorite smoke. A powerful smoke not unlike the other Man O War selections (and its cousin the Diesel), this cigar makes all of that flavor and power a little more manageable. Using Habano ligero wrapper from Esteli and a filler/binder packed with ligero, this is a cigar that will give “Straight Ligero” a run for its money. EPC Elencos - This is the top of the line from Ernesto Perez Carillo and commands a staggering $11 each. That is really not much in today’s cigar world but compared to the paltry sums required to experience the great Core Line and New Wave Connecticut, the Elencos is a luxury item, but one that all of us can enjoy. The most powerful of the current line, this cigar delivers unique flavors and a mystic experience thanks to its Dominican binder, Nicaraguan filler and Brazilian wrapper. Give yourself the taste of luxury, give yourself an Elencos. Alec Bradley Family Blend M23 7x50 - I smoked through a box of these so fast that I soon forgot how good they were. Then I found one while making room for boxes of Daytona and Oliva G’s from a recent event. Now I want more, again, and then some more and don’t forget I want more. Reasonably priced at a mere $120 per box, you guessed it, I want more. Esencia Belicoso - A flavorful package of well aged tobaccos that exemplify the cigar maker's art. Excellent smoke in a nice-to-handle size that produces voluminous smoke and flavor. What's My Band? - this week's Unbanded Cigar, the Perdomo Lot 23, was suggested by listener Dan Crouch April Palio Cutter Contest Winner: DJ Shalifoe from Big Bay, Michigan, won the Burl Palio Cutter. During this week's show, Bob and Dale discuss retrohaling. On the What's hot? What's not? What's next? segment, Liz interviews Micah Dennison from The Party Source in Kentucky. Bob Baranek, from Weymouth, Mass., wins the November Palio Cutter contest. Cigar of the Week - Illusione Slam 888 (6 3/4" x 48) The 888 box press was one of a couple of recent experiments that Dion made for Fumare in Reno, Nevada. Having to remove a leaf from the filler in order to press it correctly, the blend changes slightly and it's a subtle yet exquisite change. Asked if he would make more of them, Dion replied "I haven't decided yet". So, it could be the end of an experiment - or maybe the beginning some new offerings from Illusione. Either way - they are a real treat! Made at the Raices Cubanas factory in Honduras from 100% Nicaraguan tobacco. Dark Side - H. Upman Sir Winston What else have you been smokin' Dale? Bad Dog Special Blend - NHC Seleccion Limitada (natural Tatuaje) - After featuring the Reserva version as our Cigar of the Week recently and falling head over heels in love with it, I ordered some from NHC last week. Dan threw in a single of the natural wrapped version for me to try, after our discussion on the phone about me preferring the Conny Broadleaf wrapper. I gotta say, that is also one mighty fine cigar! Although I still prefer the darker wrapper, I’ll happily buy and smoke either style for as long as Dan has these available. To me, the Reserva has a more malty, character, while the natural has a touch more spice and brightness. Both excellent cigars! Tatuaje Verocu No. 5 - A 5” x 40 addition to the Havana VI line with the Verocu touch, only presented with no band. A very rich, earthy and savory cigar in a superb format. Perdomo Lot 23 Toro - I always keep a few of these around. I find them a pleasant medium bodied cigar with semi-sweet, roasted nut and bready flavors. I find this a very good cigar to gift to those just starting on the cigar lifestyle - never harsh, always dependable in smooth taste and priced right. What else have you been smokin' Bob? La Caridad del Cobre - I ran into Frank Herrera at the Ybor City Heritage and Cigar Festival this past weekend and after we patched things up I purchased a few different sizes of this new blend from Frank. Produced by Luis Sanchez at La Tradicion Cubana, the line has been extended with new sizes, a maduro and natural wrapper version and some great medium bodied flavors. I’ll be sitting down with Frank next week in Miami to get more details. Brun del Re - Macanudo Cru Royale - A 30 yr old petite corona from Benny Gomez made from 100% Honduran tobacco. Any time you talk with Benny its like having a party, his enthusiasm, humor and joy are contagious. More on this after after I sit down with Benny in Miami. Tatujae Anarchy - a brand new release from Pete Johnson that is quite a departure from his usual. Made by Pepin Garcia, this blend features a wrapper that is a proprietary crop of Ecuadorian Habano leaf personally chosen by Pepin and Pete. The binder and filler are pure Nicaraguan. National release is scheduled for December 10th; box count of 15 for $149.85. A super dark cigar with a unique shape, the foot is fatter -bulbous even. The flavors are expectantly dark with NO SPICE overtones, Dark chocolate cocoa and coffee flavors feed my need for a very creamy mouth feel that brings one dreams of coffee and dancing chocolate bears while being whisked away on its curling smoke trail. What's My Band? - #939: Carlos Torano Liga IV, provided by Ronald Regnier Bob - Sports a light brown wrapper that is wrinkled in appearance, with a slightly squishy feel. Flavor: First impression is dry and sharp. Mellowed a little to a subtly sharp bitter flavor. Nutty flavors. November Palio Cutter Contest Winner: Bob Baranek from Weymouth, Mass. won the carbon fiber Palio Cutter. Enter the December contest now to win a burl Palio Cutter. Do you have a Herf Line Review?
