Sammy is one of the funniest characters in the entire premium cigar industry, and has a million stories to tell—not to mention his incredible Erik Espinosa impression—which we will, of course, force him to perform.

The #17 2023 Cigar of the Year is the La Palina KB Part Three. The story of La Palina's KB is quite interesting from both the La Palina end and the Cigar Coop end. In 2011, La Palina Cigars introduced its second line, El Diario. La Palina positioned El Diario as an everyday smoke and was one meant to be more affordable than its ultra-premium Family Series. El Diario went on to capture Cigar Coop's #1 Cigar of the Year for 2011. The following year, La Palina unveiled a 4 1/4 x 40 petit corona line extension with a more robust tweaked blend known as KB. KB stands for “Kill Bill,” and it was named because the prototype of the sample given to La Palina owner Bill Paley was so strong that it threw him for a loop. Later, La Palina released a second KB size in the form of a 6 x 40 vitola, the KB II. Fast forward to 2021, and La Palina decided to discontinue the El Diario line while launching a new line around KB. In addition to the KB and KB II sizes coming over, La Palina added two new sizes: Part Three (5 x 52) and Part Four (6 x 54). Coming in at #27 is the La Palina 125 Años. The story of La Palina Cigars is one that is well known. The brand was founded back in 1896 by Samuel Paley under his Congress Cigar Company. When Samuel retired in 1926, the La Palina brand pretty much retired with him. In 2010, the La Palina Cigars as we know it was resurrected by Samuel's grandson, William C. Paley. 2021 would mark 125 years since Samuel Paley founded the brand, therefore La Palina Cigars decided it would release a commemorative cigar to mark the occasion – and the La Palina 125 Años was born. The La Palina 125 Años is the first La Palina offering to be produced out of TABOLISA, the factory owned by Oliva Cigar Company. The cigar consists of 100% Nicaraguan tobaccos. The cigar has been released in one size - a 6 1/2 x 52 Toro Extra. Originally the cigar was released in glass jars as limited release, but this past year it has been added as a core line offering under boxes with the same blend. While the blend is identical, it is worth noting we ranked this cigar from the 2021 offering (which under our criteria is eligible). The La Palina 125 Años delivered a flavor profile of cedar, dank earth, chocolate, natural tobacco, fruit, and white pepper. This is something quite different than anything we've seen from La Palina before, but the flavors click. The flavors delivered are medium-bodied and countered by medium strength. For La Palina this is the 5th time it has landed on the Countdown - and the company's first appearance since 2013. If you are following along at home, we have unveiled 4 cigars thus far on the Countdown and this is the fourth cigar to land on the Countdown produced out of Nicaragua. It's been 13 years since Bill Paley resurrected the brand created by his grandfather Samuel Paley, La Palina. Over the years Paley has teamed up with some of the best factories in the world in many different countries to produce his products. While La Palina's history is often associated with the brands of his grandfather, Bill Paley is now carving his own place in history with his brand.  This year, while there wasn't a new brand, there were some exciting projects that returned - and other exciting projects that were tweaked. Matt Booth's Room101 Cigars would commemorate its 13th anniversary at the 2022 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show. Of course there is a 13th anniversary cigar to mark the occasion. However there were some other themes going on at Room101's booth. First up, the company would go "Nicaragua" releasing three Nicaraguan puros made in Nicaragua. The other story would be that this was Matt Booth's first Trade Show where he was no longer a brand owner. Just prior to the Trade Show, Booth would sell his cigar brand to Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG). Booth's Room101 brand would become a part of STG's Forged Cigar Company and Booth would join STG as a Creative Director. Booth had already been working with STG, and there were a couple of STG projects he already put his footprint on - namely the relaunch of Sancho Panza and Los Statos Deluxe. Although no orders were taken from Sancho Panza and Los Statos Deluxe, the products were showcased at the Trade Show. Meanwhile there were several members of the STG team at the Room101 booth - essentially giving STG a Trojan horse into the show.  The important thing - whether it was Camacho, Davidoff, Caldwell, La Palina or STG, Booth remained true to his roots and continues to show a genuine love of the cigar industry. From the 2021 PCA Trade Show, we talk to Bill Paley of La Palina Cigars. In reality, there were actually two booths at the Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show that La Palina was exhibiting. One of the booths was literally set up as a mobile studio for La Palina's Cigar Lockdown show. The other booth was where La Palina was doing its Trade Show business. When it came to the booth handling sales, La Palina was one of the many companies that scaled down its main booth size. At the same time there was plenty going on at the La Palina booth.
