Við kynnumst írsku rappsveitinni Kneecap, sem unnu fyrir helgi mál gegn breska ráðherranum fyrrverandi, Kemi Badenoch, sem hafði reynt að stöðva styrkveitingu til þeirra. Dr. James Russell joins me for the third episode in my series on the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. Dr. Russell is a book historian in Phoenix, Arizona. He completed his doctorate at the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies at Durham University in the UK. James is interested in how material texts shape spiritual experiences. Focusing on early modern esoteric and contemplative literature, he studies the traces readers have left behind in books and manuscripts in order to reconstruct the reading experiences of the past. Marginalia in the Buffalo copy of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, what Dr. Russell describes as a “DVD menu”.In his dissertation, Dr. Russell wrote, “Instead of merely being viewed as an art object, the HP was a text in which readers engaged extensively with both word and image.”1 We discuss the HP as a used text as evidenced by its marginalia, like a “humanist activity book” filled with pen-and-paper intellectual games, whether or not the author intended it to be. James also leads us through an exploration of several of the commentators of early editions of the HP, including two alchemists, a botanist, and Pope Alexander VII. This conversation opens up so many new avenues that make this remarkable book worth exploring and enjoying. When James first approached me, he mentioned The Book that Nobody Read by Owen Gingerich. Gingerich attempts to trace the influence of Copernicus’s De Revolutionibus using marginalia. I was also a fan of Gingerich’s book, so I knew right away we would have plenty to talk about. Prikið kaffihús í miðbænum á sér langa og litríka sögu. Í dag er rekið þar kaffihús á daginn en skemmtistaður á kvöldin og um helgar. Helgi Hafnar Gestsson mætir á Prikið á hverjum morgni fyrir vinnu, fær sér kaffibolla, situr á sama stað og fær sama bollann. Eftir vinnu kemur hann aftur og fær sér þá te. Þetta hefur hann gert í áratugi. Um helgar kemur hann í hádeginu og fær sér að borða. Hann spjallar við gesti, unga sem aldna, ferðamenn, pönkara og heimspekinga. Prikið opnaði fyrst árið 1951 sem vill svo skemmtilega til að er einmitt fæðingarár Helga. Mannlegi þátturinn brá sér í miðbæinn og hitti Helga og Magneu B. Valdimarsdóttur, sem er að gera heimildarmynd um Helga á Prikinu. Hvar hittum við þau...? Jú auðvitað á Prikinu. Þann 30 maí sl var árshátíð grunnskóla Drangsness haldin með pompi og prakt. Aðalatriði kvöldsins var leikritið Sossa, leikgerðina unnu nemendur grunnskólans upp úr fjórleik Magneu frá Kleifum um sveitastelpuna Sossu. Eftir leiksýninguna hitti okkar kona, Kristín Einarsdóttir Mörtu Guðrúnu Jóhannesdóttur skólastjóra og Aðalbjörgu Óskarsdóttur kennara. Í Brúnagerði í Fnjóskadal, á milli Vaglaskógar og Illugastaða, búa hjónin Birna Kristín Friðriksdóttir og Guðbergur Egill Eyjólfsson. Þau hafa með dugnaði og elju komið upp skemmtilegum húsdýragarði sem þau nefna Daladýrð. Þarna gefur að líta öll helstu húsdýr eins og hesta, kindur, hund, geitur, grísi, kanínur og ýmsar tegundir af hænum. Þau reka líka veitingastað með áherslu á eigin landbúnaðarframleiðslu og Birna, sem er textílhönnuður, er með opna vinnustofu, þar sem hún vinnur að hönnun sinni og framleiðslu. Aukin vitund er um skaðsemi plasts fyrir umhverfið og hefur jafnvel verið rætt um það að banna notkun einnota plasthluta á borð við sogrör og plastpoka í nokkrum ríkjum, þar á meðal Bretlandi. Veitinga- og skemmtistaðirnir Prikið, Bravó og Húrra, í miðborg Reykjavíkur hættu alfarið notkun plaströra um helgina. Forsvarsmenn staðanna áætla að um 20.000 plaströr hafi verið notuð í hverjum mánuði. Við heyrum í Geoffrey Þór Huntington-Williams, framkvæmdastjóra Priksins. Dagforeldrum hefur fækkað um þriðjung í Reykjavík frá árinu 2011 og í Morgunblaðinu í morgun er haft eftir Dagnýju Ólafsdóttur, hjá félagi dagforeldra, að enn fleiri dagforeldri hafi tilkynnt að þau muni hætta störfum. Fjöldi foreldra er í miklum vandræðum vegna þessa og fá enga dagvistun fyrir börn sín að loknu fæðingarorlofi. Ein þeirra er Kristín Sævarsdóttir, móðir 16 mánaða drengs, sem hefur stofnað hópinn Félagsmiðstöð ungra barna, í því skyni að börn og foreldrar í þessari stöðu geti fengið að hittast og fá þannig félagsskap hvort af öðru. Við hringjum í hana. Á þessum árstíma skemma margir dekk og felgur þegar þeir keyra í holur á vegunum en ástand vega á höfuðbogarsvæðinu er sumstaðar slæmt. Nokkuð hefur borið á þessu að undanförnu og ökumenn geta orðið fyrir talsverðu fjárhagstjóni vegna þessa. Við ætlum að forvitnast ástandið í ár og spyrja hvort ökumenn geti átt einhvern rétt á því að fá tjónið bætt. Runólfur Ólafsson, framkvæmdastjóri FÍB, fer yfir þessi mál með okkur. Sævar Helgi Bragason kemur í sína vikulegu heimsókn og segir áhugaverð tíðindi úr heimi vísindanna.
