“We still have his room set up, with his barber chair and everything in there,” said Monica Montoya, sister of Octavian Estrada. “Tave,” as he was known by many members of the community, was a beloved barber in Floresville for many years before he was killed by a gunman outside a gas station in Elmendorf in March 2025. He was only 39 years old. Tave was more than just a barber though, said his two sisters, Monica and Sonia Estrada; he was a family man, and one who lived with generosity at his core and was always willing to help...Article Link

On this episode of Bringin' It Backwards, Adam sits down with TAVE—an acclaimed London-born producer and songwriter who's now stepping boldly into the spotlight as a solo artist. You might recognize TAVE's name from his Grammy-nominated work on Black's album "Since I Have a Lover," but this episode is extra special—it's TAVE's very first interview ever. Adam leads TAVE through his story, from discovering the piano at age five thanks to an abandoned upright in his family's London home, to working the church musician circuit, eventually landing gigs on world tours with acts like Mark Morrison and All Saints—all before his 20th birthday. TAVE opens up about his struggles with sight-reading, locking into the groove of live performance, and how an IT job almost kept him from pursuing music full-time. When the pandemic hit and live gigs dried up, TAVE made a life-changing pivot: focusing on production and songwriting, dedicating himself to building a legacy that would outlast any stage. That leap of faith paid off, leading to collaborations with artists like Masego, a Grammy nod, and now the launch of his own solo project—'Difference Now' being his latest track. Honest, down-to-earth, and loaded with insight, TAVE's story is for anyone who's ever wondered what happens when you back yourself, focus on your authentic voice, and decide it's time to "leave something behind." Stick around for TAVE's advice to aspiring artists—and don't forget to subscribe to Bringin' It Backwards for more behind-the-scenes stories straight from the artists who live them.

A community is mourning the loss of beloved “town barber” Octavian “Tave” Estrada. The Floresville community gathered March 9 in front of The Town Barbershop on 10th Street (U.S. 181) in Floresville to honor Tave, at a place where he spent more than a decade building connections and friendships with his faithful customers. Estrada's life was tragically cut short March 7, when he was shot in an apparent road-rage incident turned homicide. (See story, page 1A.) Octavian, or “Tave,” as loved ones called him, was “more than a barber” to many Floresville residents, who spent Sunday evening sharing hugs and...Article Link

In this episode, Chad interviews Chanelle Carlin about how to create the feel of your officiant business. You'll also hear Chanelle's story of succes.About Chanelle I am a lover of life and love. I have traveled the world, lived in Ireland, and now live in rural Okanogan County, Washington, USA with my family. Some of my favorite things are Christmas, orange kitties, dachshunds, traveling, hiking, time with my family, and enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning while the sun rises or a glass of wine in the evening watching the sunset. I also LOVE helping couples celebrate their love in their own, unique style and believe that life and love should be celebrated every minute! I'm often asked how I came to officiate weddings. It's a simple story, really, but not necessarily one most folks expect: When my mom passed away a few years ago, we struggled to find an officiant for her funeral service, even though, we know a number of ordained ministers. The funeral home gave us a name and that gentleman worked with us to celebrate my mom's life a few days later. Afterward, I was committed to making sure that no one else would have such a hard time finding someone to celebrate a loved one and I became an ordained minister...just in case. Once ordained, weddings literally started coming to me. Initially, they were couples struggling to find an officiant. One couple told me their first officiant passed away and the second one sort of disappeared on them! They found me six weeks before their wedding. Another couple desperate for an officiant found me from across the state two days before their ceremony! I can honestly say I have never been happier in my work or felt more fulfilled. I have the honor of celebrating couples who are celebrating their love and commitment to one another.I type your name in Google and literally, everything is about you. What step can officiants take to start landing in front of more clients on Google and everywhere else?It didn't happen overnight. I used to type in my name and not see myself. I have Google My Business, and have built my own website, ChanelleCarlin.com. I am active on social media (Facebook, Facebook business, Instagram). I have videos and have tried to be consistent with online marketing. However, I think the biggest thing is, figuring out who I am. Who is my target audience, who do I like to work with, what do I love to do? These are the things that have made the biggest impact. I had to lose ego and be willing to learn from other people.---LISTEN TO HEAR THE REST OF THE INTERVIEWChanelle's favorite tools:1. Practice of Gratitude (Look at everything and be grateful for it)2. CRM called TAVE.COM (allows me to concentrate on the small important things that can't be systematized by systematizing everything else3. Personalized postcards to my clients4. I'm on a list throughout the state with several county auditors for people who quickly need an officiant. John shares 5 things that would have been amazing to know in his first 5 years of business. Sponsor: Táve Receive an extended 60 day free trial of Táve at https://www.lightdarkco.com/tave (Lightdarkco.com/tave) Number 1. I am not my ideal client. I definitely used to be my ideal client when I first began, charging $500 for an 8 hour wedding or $50 for an hour portrait session. That was the budget that 24 year old John would have had to hire to someone. As your style and client experience evolves with you, your ideal client does too. The experience you provide for a luxury wedding client is much different than what you'd provide for a lower budget craigslist couple. Continuing to market to myself (who I thought my client was) I was undervaluing my services and it held my prices, my portfolio, and my growth back until I realized that I was not my ideal client. Number 2. Serve your clients. Don't sell to your clients. Full episode on this in Episode #47 (listen here) Trying to sell and upsell once they've booked felt sleezy to me and I didn't like it, so I rarely sold. Instead of talking about all the things I can do for them (selling), I began to talk about their pain points, how they can overcome them, and how I can help as their photographer. Allowing them to see the value they place on my service and booking them, instead of telling them what value they should place on my services and selling to them. Number 3. Outsourcing Know that the people who specialize in the areas you plan to outsource are actually really amazing at those services and probably really love doing it. When I outsourced my editing, it was hard at first, but now they do such an amazing job and I have full trust in them to match my editing style well. Number 4. Be humble and open to learn When I realized I didn't have to learn it all myself in a hands-on way, trial and error, but instead I could learn from someone else's trails and errors, that opened myself up to a fast track of learning and growth in my business. Don't be afraid to ask what you may think are “dumb” questions. They aren't. And the sooner you ask, the sooner you'll learn and grow as a person and business owner. Number 5. Set up automations I have certain emails set up to automatically send at specific points in the client journey. Certain tasks that pop up after the previous is completed, and contracts, invoices and reminders that automatically are sent to my clients. My CRM, Tave, is a huge part of those automations. I highly recommend you get a CRM (client relationship manager) to manage your clients, set up automations, and give you more time back in your hands.
