Send us a Text Message.Coming back from our last holiday of the summer (verslunarmannahelgin) and slowly coming back to life / back to reality, we bring you another replay of one of our classics. This time we bring you a re-listen of our artist spotlight with genre-bending and self-described “boy band” Xiupill. With members hailing from Iceland, Spain and the US, the three-piece create a blend of production, performance and artistry that looks firmly to the future of music production while embracing diverse elements of the past. Two thirds of the band — Juan M. Melero and Jón Múli, missing Oliver Devaney — joined us in our studio at GV HQ to talk about their sophomore album MYTHOLOGY (released on March 28), as well as touring, pop essentialism, and the importance of caffeine in production.Listen to MYTHOLOGY on SpotifyBuy the album on BandcampXiupill on Instagram: @xiu_pill66 Degrees of Sound is a podcast production by The Reykjavík Grapevine, hosted by music editor Jóhannes Bjarkason and listings editor Rex Beckett.Editing and intro music by Rex Beckett. All tracks played on the show are in accordance with STEF, the Composers' Rights Society of Iceland.Check out grapevine.is for the full magazine coverage and events.grapevine.is for more upcoming events. Send us a Text Message. With August on the doorstep and our cohost Jóhannes Bjarkason going on holiday, we will be doing things a little bit differently this month and bringing you some replays of some of our favourite artist spotlight episodes. Jói and Rex handpicked a selection of top notch guests we've had in this year, which you may have missed if you're a new listener. For our first replay episode, we go back to April when we were joined by lo-fi indie-punk darlings BSÍ in the hotseat, or rather one half of them, drummer and singer Sigurlaug (Silla) Thorarensen. Silla joined us in Grapevine HQ's brand new podcasting studio for a riveting and lively chat about the song, the video, the band's plans, and general silliness.Fear not for fresh content, however, as we will have bi-weekly hot happenings episodes and our Saturday morning mixes as usual with guest hosts joining us for those.Links to BSÍ:Instagram: @bsi.bandFacebook: BSÍYouTube: @brusselssproutsintlOpening track: BSÍ — Lily (hot dog) (r. Send us a Text Message. You know that meme that's like “If there's no girls, goths, or gays, I'm not going”? If you giggled and double-tapped it, Norðanpaunk is the festival for you. Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, Norðanpaunk (“northern punk”) is a countryside celebration of dark, extreme, underground and weird music. Taking place every year during Verslunarmannahelgi (Merchant's Day Weekend) in the quiet hamlet of Laugarbakki, North Iceland, it is a whole reunion for freaks and their families.Based on the ethos of DIY, punk, harm reduction and anti-oppression, the volunteer-run non-profit festival has flourished into a cult favourite for locals and internationals alike. Joining us today are organising team members Sólrún Sif Siguðardóttir and Ægir Freyr Birgisson who share with us what makes the festival so special and what keeps it going strong.More information and tickets to Norðanpaunk: linktr.ee/nordanpaunkOpening track: Gaddavír – Harðir Tímar Kalla á Hart Áfengi (2017) Closing track: Mørose – Óvelkomin (r. Send us a Text Message.Over the past months, almost every guest on our show has brought up the state of the live music landscape in Reykjavík in terms of the lack of midsize venues to play. This being a huge subject for all of us over at Grapevine HQ — contributor Ish Sveinsson Houle tackled just this topic in an article in our 8th issue this year. One young booker who is throwing caution to the wind and doing things her way is Agnes Hlynsdóttir, manager and booker at LEMMY and events and culture booker at Iðnó. She has notably created the Upptakarinn concert series at LEMMY (aka Up & Coming), that gives artists who have never played live a platform to perform their first gigs. Over at Iðnó, she has been making the historic, city-funded theatre a space for better known "midsize" names and more blowout gigs.We sat down with Agnes for a candid and hopeful conversation about her work and the live scene. This week, Rex and Jói welcome experimental dark pop performance artist and queer icon Mighty Bear to Grapevine HQ Studios.Having just released his latest album Angurværð on May 31, the EP marks a turning point for Mighty Bear as he tests the limitations of his artistry within a neoclassical soundscape. Send us a Text Message. This week we are back with an artist spotlight on singer-songwriter GDRN and her quick but huge rise to success in Icelandic music. This episode is hosted solely by Jóhannes and will be our only release this week, as Rex is out sick. (If you're wondering where last week's Hot Happenings and Saturday Morning Mix episodes went, that's also what happened.)Guðrún Ýr Eyfjörð, better known as GDRN, is one of Iceland's most celebrated pop stars in recent years after her 2018 debut album Hvað Ef? surged to top the local charts. Her artistry also took her to branching out of music, playing the lead role in the Netflix series Katla, created by Baltasar Kormákur and Sigurjón Kjartansson. Mixing elements of blue-eyed soul, r'n'b, and tight pop music, GDRN's songs are bound to keep playing in your head, over and over and over again. Her latest album Frá Mér Til Þín came out March 22, 2024. In this synchronicity-heavy episode, we find many accidental connections between the artist and tracks, making these disparate tracks reach common ground. Send us a Text Message.Things truly get heated up on this week's edition of Hot Happenings, as we have an absolutely fire discussion with Icelandic music industry expert Anna Jóna Dungal. A wearer of many hats in the industry with a rich and varied background, she is notably the OK AGENCY consulting firm, manager of erstwhile Eurovision contenders Celebs, and previously on the Sena Live team. She recently put on a new fancy hat of project manager at Salurinn Concert House in Kópavogur, a beloved music hall that has raised the bar Iceland's live music world since the early 2000s. Along with discussing their events and programming, Anna Jóna and hosts Jói and Rex deep dive into the state of live music venues in the capital, the ins and outs of playing the music industry game, and the importance of being able to suck on stage. If you have lots of spicy thoughts about live music in Iceland, this one will be a scorcher for you!Exit track:Keli — Vangavísur (r. Send us a Text Message. There's never a dull moment at GV HQ studios and this week is no exception! Coming in frazzled from a long weekend, we arrived to find our mixer had vanished and we had to improvise. Luckily we are punk-ethos musicians so we just got creative. This episode is very "play it as it lays" but in the best way possible, we think. We were also very lucky to have a great guest in our midst: multi-instrumental electronic artist SiGRÚN joined us in the studio to talk about her new single "Catching Up" (released April 18) off her upcoming album Monster Milk. We had a charming and thought provoking chat with her about her prestigious musical origins, existential crises, feeding humans, and the love of a good reverb plugin. We'll be back on Thursday with a great Hot Happenings episode and (hopefully) our mixer back!Follow SiGRÚN:Music video for "Catching Up"Instagram: @_s1grun_Facebook: s1grunSpotify: SiGRÚNBandcamp: s1grun66 Degrees of Sound is a podcast production by The Reykjavík Grapevine, hosted by music editor Jóhannes Bjarkason and listings editor Rex Beckett.Editing and intro music by Rex Beckett. All tracks played on the show are in accordance with STEF, the Composers' Rights Society of Iceland.Check out grapevine.is for the full magazine coverage and events.grapevine.is for more upcoming events. Send us a Text Message. As we sprint through the end of our transition to biweekly summer issues, we kick off another weekly rotation of 66DoS. This week's artist spotlight is on the genre-bending and self-described “boy band” Xiupill! With members hailing from Iceland, Spain and the US, the three-piece create a blend of production, performance and artistry that looks firmly to the future of music production while embracing diverse elements of the past. We've had our eyes and ears on them for a while, including having them on our Off-Waves showcase last November during Iceland Airwaves 2023, and we're super stoked to finally have them on the show. Two thirds of the band — Juan M. Melero and Jón Múli, missing Oliver Devaney — joined us in our studio at GV HQ to talk about their sophomore album MYTHOLOGY (released on March 28), as well as touring, pop essentialism, and the importance of caffeine in production.Listen to MYTHOLOGY on SpotifyBuy the album on BandcampXiupill on Instagram: @xiu_pill 66 Degrees of Sound is a podcast production by The Reykjavík Grapevine, hosted by music editor Jóhannes Bjarkason and listings editor Rex Beckett.Editing and intro music by Rex Beckett. All tracks played on the show are in accordance with STEF, the Composers' Rights Society of Iceland.Check out grapevine.is for the full magazine coverage and events.grapevine.is for more upcoming events. Another week, another brand new cycle of 66 Degrees of Sound, our podcast highlighting new music and events in Iceland. This week kicks off this week with an artist spotlight on Dustin O'Halloran, the renown American pianist, producer, and composer who now lives in Iceland. Dustin released his latest solo album 1 0 0 1 on March 22 along with the video single “Spiritus Naturae Aeternus”, featuring a spellbinding choreography and performance by dancer Fukiko Takase. We sat down with him for a buoyant and insightful discussion about his new release, the way the ideas took form and placed themselves in context, the nature of humanity and the role of artistry alongside the rise of AI, and just some good ol' fashioned banter. Due to some technical issues, the interview is conducted solely by Jói in this episode, with Rex takin' care of business in the wings.Watch the video for Dustin O'Halloran's “Spiritus Naturae Aeternus ", released on January 31.Official website: https://dustinohalloran.com/Instagram: @dustinohalloranFacebook: Dustin O'HalloranX: @DustinOHalloranA Winged Victory For The Sullen: https://awvfts.com/66 Degrees of Sound is a podcast production by The Reykjavík Grapevine, hosted by music editor Jóhannes Bjarkason and listings editor Rex Beckett.Editing and intro music by Rex Beckett. All tracks played on the show are in accordance with STEF, the Composers' Rights Society of Iceland.Check out grapevine.is for the full magazine coverage and events.grapevine.is for more upcoming events.
