Questions have been raised over a three-week mission to locate and re-home three native skinks, at a cost of $85,000. It involved clearing vegetation along State Highway Three near New Plymouth - and releasing one copper skink and two gold striped geckos at Everett Park Scenic Reserve. Auckland University conservation biologist James Russell says the money spent was a fraction of the total costs of work on the highway. He explained New Zealand is extremely bio-diverse - and gold-striped geckos are incredibly rare. "It's just another species where we don't know what's happening - and if we don't look, it'll just disappear and be another blot on our record." Warren: Four elders at Gateway Church, whose senior pastor Robert Morris stepped down earlier this year, have been removed after the results of a law firm's investigation of sexual abuse allegations against the pastor were announced in a sermon on Sunday (Nov. 3). The removals are the latest responses by one of the country's largest evangelical Christian churches to allegations brought by Cindy Clemishire in June that Gateway's founding pastor, Robert Morris, 63, had molested her in the 1980s, when Morris was in his 20s and she was 12. Natasha: Soon afterward, also in June, the church retained law firm Haynes and Boone to conduct an investigation, what did they find? Warren: Church elder Tra Willbanks announced on Sunday, the investigation found that all but three elders had been aware of Morris' history with Clemishire, now 54, and her age at the time of the alleged abuse. While Willbanks declined to identify the elders who were removed, the names of elders Jeremy Carrasco, Kevin Grove, Gayland Lawshe and Thomas Miller no longer appear on the church website, according to multiple news accounts. Natasha: The investigation's results also prompted reforms to Gateway's leadership structure and bylaws. Warren: Church staff will no longer serve as elders. Willbanks said, “We must bring this level of independence and objectivity to our eldership, and it has been lacking in the years past,” The summer's allegations prompted state legislators to call for changing the statute of limitations for sexual assault, harsher penalties for mandatory reporters who fail to follow up on accusations and reforming nondisclosure agreements for sexual abuse survivors. Secular and religious advocacy organizations have been pushing for such reforms, as well as the elimination of the use of nondisclosure agreements in sexual assault cases. Since opening in 1999, the mall has been a popular shopping and dining destination, known for its unique shopping village and historic murals. It continues to expand with new businesses. Erika Bridges, the mall's marketing director, expressed gratitude for community support. Owned by Simon Property Group, the mall remains a key part of regional growth. STORY 2: Georgia Gwinnett College discovers bacteria in Joro spider Joro spiders, first spotted in Georgia a decade ago after arriving from Asia, are most visible in September and lay eggs by mid-October. Dr. James Russell and student Nicholas Mizera from Georgia Gwinnett College discovered that Joro spiders are infected with Wolbachia, a common bacteria in insects. While Joro spiders can't transmit Wolbachia to humans, the bacteria may cause reproductive barriers in spiders, potentially useful for population control. This concept could extend to other insects like mosquitoes. Mizera's research experience confirmed his passion for biology, and he plans to pursue a doctorate. Russell and Mizera are preparing a paper on their findings. STORY 3: Gwinnett/Walton Habitat for Humanity Celebrates 10 Years of Impact Gwinnett/Walton Habitat for Humanity is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its "A Brush with Kindness" program, which provides critical home repairs and modifications for income-eligible homeowners in Gwinnett and Walton counties. Over the past decade, the initiative has restored over 300 homes, improving safety and living conditions for senior citizens, veterans, and families in need. The program focuses on essential repairs like exterior painting and accessibility improvements, enhancing community strength and preserving homeownership. For more details, visit habitatgwinnett.org. Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank expressed gratitude for the honor, highlighting the stadium's capability to host major events. This will be Atlanta's fourth Super Bowl, with previous games held in 1994, 2000, and 2019. The successful bid was led by the Atlanta Sports Council and various local organizations. Atlanta is also set to host other major events, including the College Football Playoff National Championship and FIFA World Cup. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp praised the decision, emphasizing Atlanta's readiness to host large-scale events. STORY 5: Gwinnett Issues Bonds to Buy Mall Macy's Stores. What We Know Gwinnett County is advancing its redevelopment plans for the former Gwinnett Place Mall by purchasing the Macy's department and furniture stores for $16.5 million, with the deal closing in November. The county issued bonds at a 4.7% interest rate, raising $17.2 million, and received a AAA bond rating, which Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson highlighted as beneficial for taxpayers. This acquisition adds 23 acres to the county's holdings, totaling 76 acres, and enhances redevelopment flexibility. The "Global Villages" concept will guide the mall's transformation, with most of it being demolished, except for existing anchors. Development partner proposals are expected in early 2025. Children's author and blogger James Russell is a children's author has noticed a trend of teenagers using phones as an escape from awkward conversations. James speaks to Jesse.
The year is drawing to a close, and Joan's sharing her picks for the top kids' books of 2023. Little Ruby and Friends by Ruby Tui. Picture book. At The Bach by Joy Cowley & Hilary Jean Tapper. Picture book. Dog Man: Twenty Thousand Fleas Under the Sea by Dav Pilkey. 5-8 year olds. Children of the Rush by James Russell. 8-12 year olds. First title in what is now a two book series, set in the town of Lawrence in Otago during the Gold Rush about two kids there who form an alliance against corrupt grownups and have some dangerous adventures. Silver Linings by Katrina Nannestad. 9+ I love her books – she writes historical fiction for this age group, the most recent ones set in WW2 but this is in Australia during the 1950's about a young girl (around 6 years old) who narrates this story about the death of her mother, an aunt coming to look after them who is cold and harsh; and being overjoyed when her father remarries someone who really cares for the family and makes them feel good again – until disaster strikes. It's really lovely. Edmonds Taku Puka Tohutao Tuatahi: Edmonds kids cookbook, translated into Māori. Patu: New Zealand Wars by Gavin Bishop. Suitable for the whole family. More brilliance from Gavin Bishop, this time on the New Zealand wars. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of the Same Business Different Day podcast, Dominic Burtech teaches us how to use a "simplistic" mindset to build greatness. While many entrepreneurs that start with little or nothing ultimately effect their employees with their survival mindset, Dominic has adopted a different approach. His open door/ "let's learn together" policy has afforded him the opportunity to own multiple businesses locally. Although he's working underground at times, he doesn't belong under your radar. He has an enviable familial approach, but he also takes challenges seriously. Those who say that he can't, don't know Dominic. Listen to this very good episode as we learn about a man who is as smart as he is fun. After immigrating with his family early in his childhood, Joe found solace in his love for education and looked up to people in professions that were out to help the "little guy". Joe shares his regret for not getting early corporate experience, and how that affected his performance at the start of his career. His ability to communicate to the masses, not just the "informed" helps him not only in his profession and as a teacher, but in his newest lives as a podcaster and a stand-up comedian as well. He even leaves us with some jokes at the end of the show! Enjoy this episode with the very interesting Joe Samo! In this episode, Zeke is joined by guest co-host Natasha Mills of the Odd Pairing podcast, as they welcome Sam & Nita for a spirited journey. While weather and hazing from peers had some influence on Sam's path, Nita explains how being born to immigrant parents affected her educational path. They both had larger than life causes that inevitably led each of their businesses to cross paths. It's a magical story where brains and hearts collide, and they are now affecting the world together. HOLY HELL!!!The Lakers got one of their best wins of the season, very shorthanded, even by their standards, in Toronto against a quality Raptors squad. And from the opening tip, the energy in this game felt different. From the Lakers actually putting points on the board early... to all nine guys who stepped on the court making strong contributions... to Wenyen freakin' Gabriel having a career night... this was as strong as this team has looked in quite some time. Russell Westbrook had a triple-double and went from fourth quarter goat to hero in the span of just a matter of seconds. And LeBron James was incredible. 36 points. Nine rebounds. Seven assists. Two awesome weakside blocks. Tons of tone-setting energy and theatricality. What this means for the Lakers moving forward... who knows? Really. Truly. Don't bother trying to guess. Just enjoy the night, because it was a ton of fun.Hosts: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!PrizePicksCheck out PrizePicks.com and use promo code: “NBA” or go to your app store and download the app today. Welcome to the final episode of Season 4 #MerakiSeason! It's sad to think that we're at the finale, but our wonderful journey ends with two more extraordinary guests! The knowledge that Treci & Amir shared is not only priceless, but timeless. These are jewels you can use in your daily life, as well as pass down to those you know in need later on in life. Amir & Trecie discuss their joint and separate business endeavors, but trace back to a time when they were still figuring it all out. We talk about learning from early jobs they never thought they wanted to do, building relationships of all kinds, getting small nuggets of advice that lasted forever, and sacrificing for the success of the family. Enjoy the conversation and revisit episodes from throughout season 4. We thank all of the listeners, and all that were involved with creating it. We will be back soon with more! Zeke was happy to sit down with the fascinating, self-proclaimed "ambivert" Corinne Lebrun. Corinne's excitement to learn in various fields is refreshing amongst so many that spend time trying to master one just so they can teach. What is so intriguing though is the spectrum of the fields. When the highly qualified is also highly ambitious, we have very little choice but to listen to the stories they have to tell. Corinne is the bright light in an occasionally dim world. Listen to this episode to understand how she saw life early on, and how her inquisitive nature helped her later on in life. You will also hear what her Meraki is, as #MerakiSeason is coming to an end. Enjoy this episode and let us know what you think in the comments. For this week's episode, Zeke had the pleasure of sitting down with the multi-faceted William Peetoom. We couldn't fit all of William's work into just one episode, but we gave it our best effort. He not only learned a lot, but put so much of it into action. The respect that he has amongst his peers and his culture speaks for itself. William's willingness to share is just what it takes to make us all better businesspeople! Check the Film Hub's new look on video if you'd like to view our podcast. Witness grit and determination as a young Viviana Oropeza proves her detractors wrong and becomes the educated, powerful, and wonderful human being that we got to interview in this episode. Not only do we need more people like her in the business world, but in the world in general! Viviana tells us a truly heartfelt story about a young lady that could've been cast aside, but is now off on her own and has become quite a unique name in her field. What an honest and inspirational story. Viviana Oropeza is operating on her own terms, and we are truly happy for her accomplishments. Enjoy this movie in podcast form. Alongside guest co-host Natasha Mills, Zeke sits down with power couple Gian Saunders & Brett Pipkin. Gian and Brett have a story that you don't want to miss. It's fitting that this is a 2-parter because 1 hour wouldn't be long enough to do their story justice. Unique backgrounds, personalities, and stories, but with common goals. This is more than a great love story. This is about second chances, transitions, determination, entrepreneurship, and faith. Time flies when the movie is this good. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did. #MerakiSeason This podcast is brought to you by The Film Hub, Kaizen Group International, Brett Pipkin & Gian Saunders, YourInsurancePlace.com, A Different Day Radio, and Meraki Allure. Sharmaine is a trailblazer that can speak directly to those hesitant to go into business on her own. Her philosophies on taking the leap don't necessarily have roots in entrepreneurship, but few are more fit to motivate those interested than Sharmaine herself. She speaks through experiences from early life, and takes this powerful thought process with her everywhere she goes. Her balance of business and pleasure are also incomparable. Her important daily work literally gives life, while her time away from work makes it all worthwhile. Sharmaine doesn't turn her back on any challenges, and we're glad to have had the chance to sit down with her. Please listen to Sharmaine's podcast Curiosity Over Fear on iTunes or Spotify. So on the one hand, the Lakers got huge, mega-star performances from their three mega-stars. They won on Tuesday, running their record to a more tidy 5-3 after a very shaky start (in the win/loss column, at least). Russell Westbrook continues to look much more comfortable playing with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, seeming to settle into an attacking rhythm and turning the ball over a lot less (four or fewer in four of his last five games). On the other hand...The Lakers surrendered 70 (70!!!) points to the HOUSTON ROCKETS in the first half of Tuesday's win. The same Rockets who entered the game as the league's 28th most efficient offensive team. Or, put another way, the 3rd most inefficient. They were nearly victimized by two late side-out-of-bounds plays that left Houston a half second or so from going to the line with a chance to tie the game. The Rockets suck, and the Lakers only won by two. So there's that.Bottom line, the Lakers continue to drive their fans crazy, benefitting only local cardiologists and other dispensers of heart care. It's going to be a bumpy ride, people. And what will it look like as players get back off the injury list and onto the court? Is Malik Monk feeling some footsteps, whether from Austin Reaves or the impending return of Wayne Ellington and Kendrick Nunn (not to mention Talen Horton-Tucker)?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers win, and the Big Three is dominant. Let's talk about why...SEGMENT 2: LeBron says Westbrook is starting to "fit out," meaning he's playing like Russell Westbrook should play. Not trying to be someone he's not because others think that's what happens for the Lakers to thrive. What was the evidence on Tuesday? Is he turning a corner?SEGMENT 3: Austin Reaves is earning playing time, while Malik Monk seems to be bleeding it. Is it possible Monk is pressing because he knows those already-shrinking minutes could disappear once the roster is healthy? Is he attacking the time he's getting the right way?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!ShopifyGo to Shopify.com/lockedonnba for a FREE fourteen-day trial and get full access to Shopify's entire suite of features.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
