This member's bill follows a complaint laid to the BSA regarding Sean Plunket's online media network, The Platform. Plunket says the content of his show does not meet the requirements of the Broadcasting Act, and that the BSA had “"woefully and egregiously overstepped its bounds". The BSA, however, says Plunket's show clearly meets the requirements of the ACT. Auckland house prices have held firm through a busy July. Real estate agency Barfoot & Thompson's revealed it sold 957 properties across the Auckland region last month – its highest July total in four years. More than 46% of sales sat at more than a million dollars and new listings rose more than 14%. Managing Director Peter Thompson says the market's holding steady and is ready to take-off when interest rates come down further. He told Mike Hosking things are starting to move again with more first-time home buyers entering the market and more activity from developers as a result of the fast track legislation. The Better Public Media trust says online giants' turnover should be taxed and ringfenced to fund news. The Government's flipped from opposing the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill, which started under Labour, to now supporting it - saying on balance, it's worth doing. The Bill would encourage companies such as Meta, which owns Facebook, and Google to negotiate with local media outlets to pay for their news content. After Canada introduced a similar law in 2023, Meta blocked news content from appearing on Facebook there. Meta has also said it plans to stop paying Australian media companies for news. Auckland's largest real estate agency experienced a significant boost last month. Barfoot & Thompson's property sales for May were up 30 percent on April and up 27 percent compared to May 2023. The agency's managing director, Peter Thompson, says the company's experiencing a small boom in demand, which has been lessened by the current interest rates.  "I think we're in for a quite a good little slow boosted market. Newly released documents show officials warned the government that media outlets would soon be requesting bailouts if the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill was not progressed. The Bill aims to make platforms like Meta and Google pay for news that appears on their social media channels. The Broadcasting Minister Melissa Lee has previously opposed it, calling it "another tax." Now she says she will wait to hear back from the select committee overseeing the Bill in May before deciding whether to proceed. Melissa Lee declined our request for an interview. David has been involved in Naval Wargaming most of his life, inspired by his fathers service in The Royal Navy in WW2, he has gone on to a career in Naval Ship design and currently uses wargaming within his course content at UCL. The National Party plans to fund a large chunk of its newly announced tax plan through a levy on foreign buyers. Offshore purchase of houses worth more than $2 million would have a 15 percent tax added, which National says could raise up to $740 million dollars a year. There's been a ban on foreign buyers since 2018, put in place by the Labour Party to cool the housing market. Barfoot & Thompson managing director Peter Thompson spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
