The four gospels found in the New Testament are similar and share various stories. But they also have different viewpoints and perspectives on the life of Jesus. This week we begin with the gospel of John, written to a group of believers that were second and third-generation of believers. In "Finding Jesus," Herb Montgomery takes readers on a deep dive into the often-overlooked aspects of Jesus' message, spotlighting his call to radical love, justice, and solidarity with the marginalized. Our upcoming interview will explore the journey behind Montgomery's provocative reinterpretation, discussing the ways in which this book seeks to not only reshape our understanding of the Christian faith but also how it applies to contemporary issues of social injustice. Expect to hear about Montgomery's critical take on traditional interpretations, his vision for a more inclusive and action-oriented faith, and the practical implications of living out Jesus' teachings in today's world. We'll talk about all that and plenty more snark! Everything Jesus ever did seems counterintuitive. Instead of feeding his ego, Jesus cultivated his heart. He knew that only time with the Father was enough to satisfy our deepest longings and give us the strength that we need. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Book interview with Damon Garcia – “The God Who Riots: Taking Back the Radical Jesus”
Christine Valters Paintner is joined by author Claudia Love Mair for a series of video conversations. Each month they take up a new book by or about a voice of color. The community is invited to purchase and read the books in advance and participate actively in this journey of deepening, discovery, and transformation. This month we are reading The God Who Riots: Taking Back the Radical Jesus by Damon Garcia. For thousands of years, religious messages have been used to either uphold the status quo or upend it. And while we are all very familiar with the kind of conservative Christianity that suppresses liberation and justifies oppression, progressive Christians are just as guilty of upholding unjust systems when we prioritize harmony and unity over justice. True justice requires us to choose sides. True justice requires action. When we look at Scripture, we see that the God of the Bible was never neutral. Again and again God chooses the side of the oppressed. Jesus said the Spirit of the Lord anointed him “to let the oppressed go free,” and those of us who claim to follow Jesus today must commit to this radical mission of liberation. In The God Who Riots, popular YouTuber and public theologian Damon Garcia uses his frank, tell-it-like-it-is style to connect us with the Jesus who flipped tables in the temple and led an empire-destabilizing movement for liberation. The spirit of this God is embodied in today's protests, riots, and strikes. As we join this struggle for liberation, we are joining the God who riots alongside us, within us, and through us. On this episode of Convergences: Jon, Kyle and Adam are joined by Liberation Theologian and Video Essayist Damon Garcia to talk about his new book 'The God Who Riots: Taking Back the Radical Jesus'. Damon takes us through the history of liberation theology arising from the class struggles in South America in the mid 20th century, detailing the intersections between dissident elements in the church and Marxist revolutionary militants in places such as Nicaragua, Brazil, and Cuba. We discussed the commonalities between socialist and Christian thought, how to read Jesus as a political tactician and organizer against the Roman Empire, the challenges that radical religion faces from its own institutions, and the lines of escape that lie in wait for a Christianity that rises up from below.'The God Who Riots: Taking Back the Radical Jesus' by Damn Garcia: https://www.broadleafbooks.com/store/productgroup/2050/The-God-Who-RiotsDamon's YT channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/DamonGarcia@whoisdamon on TwitterSupport Zer0 Books on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/zerobooksSubscribe: http://bit.ly/SubZeroBooksFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ZeroBooks/Twitter: https://twitter.com/zer0books-----Other links:Check out the projects of some of the new contributors to Zer0 Books:Acid HorizonPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpodcastYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/acidhorizonMerch: crit-drip.comThe Philosopher's Tarot from Repeater Books: https://repeaterbooks.com/product/the-philosophers-tarot/The Horror VanguardApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/horror-vanguard/id1445594437Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/horrorvanguardBuddies Without OrgansApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/buddies-without-organs/id1543289939Website: https://buddieswithout.org/Xenogothic: https://xenogothic.com/Support Daniel Tutt's work by visiting the Torsion Groups Patreon account: https://patreon.com/torsiongroups

In this episode, we have a conversation with author and liberation theologian Damon Garcia, whose book, The God Who Riots: Taking Back the Radical Jesus, releases today, August 23rd; links to purchase available below/on his social media pages! We chat with Damon about his spiritual journey of growing up conservative evangelical and discovering that the Jesus he read about in the Gospels was much different than what his church had taught, and why he had to leave the church where he was leading youth ministry. April and Anna bring up their favorite themes of the book (the way he writes about forgiveness will blow your mind!!! In the collectivist culture of the time it was understood to be a communal act that takes away the shame that society has placed upon them!!), and we discussed practical ways for living out God's dream of radical justice in community. We deeply enjoyed reading his book and we hope you will too! Damon Garcia can be found on Instagram and Twitter @whoisdamon. You can purchase his book here and subscribe to his YouTube channel here. Jesus Came To Be The Light Of The World || Radical Jesus Part 7 || Matt Doty by Melbourne Lights Church
What does a real disciple of Jesus Christ look like as they walk through their days? Does she stand up for Jesus with strongly worded Facebook posts? Does he insist his perspective dominate others in conversations (read: arguments!)? Does she withdraw from neighbors to avoid any sort of cultural pollution? In this final teaching of our Radical Jesus series, we look at the marks of a disciple of Jesus through the lens of Romans chapter 12 and discover a call that is vastly unpopular in our modern world, especially surrounding hot topics. The Way of Jesus is the way of self-giving love.

From September 12, 2021 What does Jesus have to do with the challenges we face today? Why does our world feel so divided? How do we talk to others who seem so sure of themselves? In a world that pushes us to extremes…we must decide what is worth fighting for…and ask ourselves how…Jesus is calling us to follow Him. This teaching kicks off a new sermon series called Radical Jesus in which we'll talk about many of the hot topics of our day and learn how Jesus would have us engage well in the midst of it all.
Scripture warns that in the last days there will be antichrists who will lead many astray. And so without a clear understanding of who Jesus Christ is, we can easily be deceived, and fail to become the disciples we were meant to be. This week we take a short break from our victory series to speak with Glenn Meldrum, evangelist and author of The Radical Jesus. He'll challenge us to abandon false conceptions of a tame Jesus and to know Him as He truly is - radical in every way!
