As sales of matcha continue to boom, Leyla Kazim traces the story of the powdered green tea from centuries-old Japanese tradition to global health trend phenomenon. We look behind the social media videos and headlines to find out more about the reported matcha shortage, how the matcha supply chain is reacting, and ask what might happen next. Also in the programme Leyla learns about some of the misconceptions we have about matcha, including the issues around the term 'ceremonial grade'; we have a report from Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms in Japan about how tea farmers are coping with the sudden boom; and Leyla digs into the health claims about matcha with dietician and scientist at King's College London, Dr Emily Leeming.Presented by Leyla Kazim and produced by Sophie Anton for BBC Audio in Bristol.

Wabi Sabi - The Perfectly Imperfect Podcast with Candice Kumai
Welcome to Wabi Sabi. Have we been kind to the Japanese? Do we deserve Japanese 7-Elevens in NY? How about asking a Japanese- American? In Today's episode is about reflection, learning, and appreciation. There is so much to learn from Japanese history — from the Edo period, to the U.S. Occupation, to the reawakening of Japanese hearts in the 20th century, and the complex but resilient relationship between Japan and the U.S. If you ask me, we shouldn't learn about Japan — we should learn from Japan. That means supporting Japanese voices, reading books by Japanese and Japanese American authors, and buying Japanese products, foods, beauty, and cultural traditions directly from their source. The research and care that goes into each episode can take me weeks, even months, to create. So if you enjoy listening, please subscribe, leave a comment, and share this podcast with two of your best friends. Now — what can we learn from the obliteration of matcha in the Western world? What can we learn from the history of Japanese Americans, wrongfully imprisoned in concentration camps during World War II, accused of crimes they did not commit? What can we learn from the resilience of a culture that endured deep suffering, only for us to now enjoy its traditions, artistry, and cuisine in all their beauty, novelty, and kawaii? We are able to appreciate Japanese culture today only because our ancestors paid a dear price. This is something we must honor, reflect on, and consider deeply in today's episode. Thanks for listening. —Candice Kumai

In keeping with the nursery rhyme, we would argue that today's crossword was full of grace ... or at least some very cool clues. Mike's favorite was 10D, Certain parent overseeing a child's career, in showbiz lingo, MOMAGER; Jean's was 66A, "This decision is hard!", IMTORN. Both agreed that they would love to do a podcast from 37A, Caribbean hot spot, ARUBA. Besides the crossword, we have a Triplet Tuesday segment, in which Mike, well, let's just say that he tried to swing for the fences but forgot to hold onto the bat. On today's episode Laura discusses hormone replacement therapy. This is not medical advice, it's me sharing what I've learned through research, client work, and personal observation. The goal is to give you the bigger picture so you can make informed, grounded choices about your health.HRT is being pushed harder than ever, and many women are told that aging automatically means to go on HRT. But your body was designed to shift through each life stage with purpose. In this episode, Laura break's down how hormones naturally change over time, why the current hype around estrogen is misleading, the differences between conventional HRT and bio-identical HRT, and what risks and benefits you need to know. Most importantly, we'll talk about the foundations you should put in place before even considering HRT, because no patch, pellet, or cream can fix a stressed-out, undernourished, or burnt-out body.___________Submit your questions to be answered on the show to wildwellfed@gmail.com_______Interested in becoming a client and working with me? We hope you can still enjoy this discussion that covers:* ICE and immigration (in the first, like, 30 seconds)* Our nonexistent beef with The Commentary podcast* Unpopular opinions (Matcha and musicals?)* The entirety of the episode from around minute 11 is about hard boiled eggs* Oh wait now there's a rocket attack on Tel Aviv* What do American and Israeli Jews not understand about each other?* Why are we fighting for this land? We disagree.* Update to my tshirt story! Happy ending (unless your'e an antisemite). Get your shirts here, all proceeds go to support communities affected October 7 and the war.* Cultural recommendations. Also, ICYMI:Hostage Ilana Gritzewsky testified at the UN about the horrific mental, physical and sexual abuse she suffered in Gaza. She did it to save her boyfriend Matan, and 49 others still held in hell. She is a true hero, and everyone in the world should know her name. This is a public episode. Wabi Sabi - The Perfectly Imperfect Podcast with Candice Kumai
In this episode of Wabi Sabi, I share the historical truth about matcha — from Eisai, the monk who first introduced powdered tea to Japan, to Sen no Rikyū, who refined the way of tea during the Tokugawa era. We trace matcha's roots through centuries of Japanese history, examining its role as a cultural and spiritual practice as well as a daily ritual. I also address the current shortage of ceremonial-grade matcha, why demand is outpacing supply, and what we can do about it. Finally, I call for better journalism around matcha — reporting that goes beyond trend-driven coverage to honor its sacred origins and the Japanese farmers and artisans who continue to protect and preserve this tradition. — Candice Kumai
