In this episode, I'm sharing the real story behind matcha — where it comes from, why it's special, and what's actually happening right now with the global demand and supply. After nearly two decades working in Japanese culinary culture and tea education, I wanted to give you a clear, respectful guide to understanding matcha the right way. I walk you through the regions that shape its flavor, the history that shaped its ceremony, and why Japanese politeness often keeps the deeper truths from being spoken. I also talk about what it feels like to watch a part of my heritage become a trend, and why it's so important to learn from Japanese voices, farmers, authors, and journalists. If you love matcha or want to understand Japanese culture with more depth and care, this episode is for you.

Riding the Matcha Wave: How Erin Lindwall Scaled Premium Tea Brand Matcha Yu

The Productpreneur Success Podcast

Today we're diving into a story that perfectly illustrates what it takes to scale a premium brand in today's competitive eCommerce landscape.   If you've been paying attention to the wellness and café scene lately, you've probably noticed matcha is having a serious moment. It's everywhere – from your local café's menu to your Instagram feed. And whilst that wave of popularity creates incredible opportunity, it also brings unique challenges.   Today's guest, Erin Lindwall, is the founder of Matcha Yu Tea – a premium Australian matcha brand that's doing something remarkable. Despite facing a global matcha shortage, increased competition, and all the complexities of sourcing an authentic product steeped in Japanese tradition, Erin has nearly doubled her online sales and built a thriving wholesale division.   But here's what makes this story particularly interesting: Erin isn't trying to be the cheapest matcha on the market. She's not competing for supermarket shelf space. Instead, she's built a brand around authenticity, quality, and a deep connection to Japanese culture – sourced directly from family tea farms in Japan, packaged in compostable materials, and sold to customers who value the story and experience as much as the product itself.   This is a masterclass in understanding your customer's buying psychology and marketing accordingly. Because when you're selling a premium product, you can't market like a mass-market brand. You need different strategies, different messaging, and a completely different approach to growth.   In today's episode, we're going to explore how Erin built those supplier relationships in Japan, how she's navigated the global matcha shortage whilst scaling, what digital marketing strategies have actually moved the needle for her business, and how she's positioned Matcha Yu to stand out in an increasingly crowded market.     Links mentioned in this episode: If you'd like help to achieve your goals, I invite you to have a chat to find out how we can make that happen together HERE By booking a Free Growth Strategy https://productpreneurmarketing.com/lets-talk Matcha Yu Tea Matcha Yu Tea Instagram   Other Ways To Enjoy This Episode: Listen on Apple Podcasts Listen on Spotify Youtube

Sometimes we tackle the big economic stories shaking up the nation. But today, we're looking at something that's hitting closer to home: your morning matcha order. If you've noticed your matcha latte costing significantly more than it used to, brace yourself - global retailers say Japanese matcha prices have jumped between 30% and 75% in 2025 alone. On today’s podcast, we're going to explain why this is happening and whether the great matcha price hike will continue.

Welcome to Wabi Sabi. Have we been kind to the Japanese? Do we deserve Japanese 7-Elevens in NY? How about asking a Japanese- American? In Today's episode is about reflection, learning, and appreciation. There is so much to learn from Japanese history — from the Edo period, to the U.S. Occupation, to the reawakening of Japanese hearts in the 20th century, and the complex but resilient relationship between Japan and the U.S. If you ask me, we shouldn't learn about Japan — we should learn from Japan. That means supporting Japanese voices, reading books by Japanese and Japanese American authors, and buying Japanese products, foods, beauty, and cultural traditions directly from their source. The research and care that goes into each episode can take me weeks, even months, to create. So if you enjoy listening, please subscribe, leave a comment, and share this podcast with two of your best friends. Now — what can we learn from the obliteration of matcha in the Western world? What can we learn from the history of Japanese Americans, wrongfully imprisoned in concentration camps during World War II, accused of crimes they did not commit? What can we learn from the resilience of a culture that endured deep suffering, only for us to now enjoy its traditions, artistry, and cuisine in all their beauty, novelty, and kawaii? We are able to appreciate Japanese culture today only because our ancestors paid a dear price. This is something we must honor, reflect on, and consider deeply in today's episode. Thanks for listening. —Candice Kumai
