Shefali Shah has never been the kind to take the path that's got many travelers on it. Her roles have never been conventional, she's always playing a character that has something to say or leaves an impact. From playing a minor girl's role in Rangeela to portraying the role of an urban - Indian housewife who cannot find the confidence to leave her broken marriage in Dil Dhadakne Do, Shefali Shah's performances have been path-breaking. However, her character in International Emmy Win web series ‘Delhi Crime' as DCP Vartika Chaturvedi was a game changer in more ways than one and it left a resounding effect on the hearts and minds of audiences and critics alike. This episode is one of my most special conversations, just by the fact that I am talking to a living legend who has penned some unforgettable songs & has been instrumental in adding shining gems in the music of Hindi cinema. (Rangeela, Bombay, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam). Mehboob Kotwal, deserves all our attention & appreciation, as he is the lyricist who has written songs of, not only some of the best movies of Mani Ratnam, Ram Gopal Varma & Sanjay Leela Bhansali but also albums like ‘Pal' to ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam'! It is just goosebumps, when he narrates stories behind the making of these iconic songs, his ‘struggle' days along with Ismail Darbar, those jamming sessions with Rahman, RGV & Mani Ratnam when they created history! Lyricist Mehboob is back with his ‘Rangeela' partner, Ahmed Khan, in his upcoming ‘Heropanti 2', starring Tiger Shroff. Seven out of the eight tunes were outrightly rejected in the first hearing by the director Ram Gopal Verma. The album however went on to be regarded as an all-time musical classic. Welcome to Episode 36 of the Khandaan podcast - your home for all things related to The Khan Troika. This week we make a deep delve into the past with 1995’s Rangeela, starring Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar and Jackie Shroff. Directed by Ram Gopal Verma, Rangeela was a relaunch for Urmila, who had already had an extensive career as a child actor but was struggling to make the leap to adult dramas the way so many child actors do. Rather unwittingly, it was also a departure for star Aamir whose commendable performance here is different from anything he had done before. This movie is also notable for its music by AR Rahman, which was a sensation when it released and is seemingly ageless. This was a very happy trip into the past for the three hosts who have lots of personal anecdotes to share as well as a new appreciation for the strengths of this film. We also discussed the London Indian Film Festival or the LIFF, which is going on right now. Tickets are still available and this might be your chance to see some seriously good cinema. Sujoy and Asim had some contrarian thoughts about Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota, a movie currently playing on Netflix but which has had a significant presence on the festival circuit, including LIFF. We also discuss the trailer for the new Ayushman Khurrana movie Article 15 - and how Asim and Amrita are sadly not in the best mental or emotional space for it. Urmila Matondkar, the Rangeela (1995) star who blazed across Bollywood through the ‘90s and after, is contesting as a Congress candidate from a difficult seat in Mumbai – Mumbai North. The area comprises a mixed population of linguistic and religious communities, uber luxe towers and swathes of slums, old East Indian gaonthans and suburbs, which have witnessed an exponential growth in the last decade and a half. When Matondkar was negotiating Bollywood, BJP stalwart and present Uttar Pradesh governor Ram Naik represented Mumbai North in the Lok Sabha.
