Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast's 80s Dhamaaka series continues with 1986's NAGINA. Arguably the most famous snake film made in the Hindi film industry, this Sridevi starrer shattered records with its blockbuster debut. Co-starring Rishi Kapoor and a mesmerising Amrish Puri, this movie had amazing music and iconic dance numbers that can never be replicated. Directed by Harmesh Malhotra and with music by Laxmikant Pyarelal, Nagina was shoo in on this list — but does it deserve the spot? Join us to find out. A big Shoutout to our friend Dj Shai Guy for the 80's Dhamaka Theme song. You can check out more of Shai's work here
Hello, Hello, Hello, This is the second part of the discussion we had on Robert Eggers! Here, Dhruv – joined by the brain-melting and blood-sucking vampire, Varun, and his “spirited animal” friend, Hemant – tries to talk about Eggers' latest horror film, “Nosferatu,” in relation to F. W. Murnau's 1922 German Expressionist classic, and Werner Herzog's existentially despairing 1979 remake of it. But little does he know the digressions this deadly duo has in store for him… Listen to the full episode to hear him respond to the absurdity of Varun referencing Zoya Akhtar's “Dil Dhadakne Do” when talking about Murnau's classic, or, worse still, the Sridevi-and-Anil-Kapoor-starrer “Judaai” when he's talking about the Eggers' version. There's plenty of discussion about how these films, despite tackling the same story, have such drastically different treatments. But that's if you can look past those comparisons… Best of luck to all! Credits Banner: Sri Sai Deva Productions Cast: Venkatesh, Kalyani, Arti Agarwal, Tanikella Bharani, Chandra Mohan, Surya, Vizag Prasad, Ahuti Prasad, Delhi Rajeswari, Akash, Sunil, VVS Laxman (special appearance) Dialogues: Chintapally Ramana Music: SA Raj Kumar Songs: Veturi, Sirivennela, Kulasekhar & Chandrabose Art: Raju Editing: Marthand K Venkatesh Co-director: Uma Maheswara Rao Producer: NV Prasad & Sanam Naga Ashok Kumar Story - Screenplay - Direction: Vikraman Release date: 11 July 2003 Interesting Facts: Film is was simultaneous shot in Tamil as Priyamana Thozhi with madhavan, Jyotika and Sridevi. It was average in Tamil but super hit In Telugu. Audio was released on June 14th 2003 in Ramanaidu Studious and it was the first Vasantham is also the first Indian film to be shot in Greece (Ninnu Choodaku song was filming in Mykonos) Additional songs shot in Switzerland and then Ammo Ammayena song was filmed at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, Rajasthan It released alongside Simhadri and ran better than Simhadri in some areas. Overall it was a super hit at the box office. Writing/Direction: Based on friendship but unlike Nuvve Kavali which had great entertainment, pacing, and emotions, Vasantham has none of these. Its straight up boring. Julie and Ashok have been childhood friends ok, and he respects her religion and everything but like nothing worked for me on the rewatch. It aged terribly. Also his family doesnt like him because he's trying to be a cricketer and he comes home late at night etc. But this aspect isn't even explored well either. Its so over the top and almost serial like. They're annoyed he comes home but how does it affect their family it's never shown. I always come back to the movie but a guy who drinks and wastes time with his friends is much better explored in AMAV. Movie is full of illogical and cringeworthy scenes Chandramohan comes back home and starts laughing. And he dies while laughing. Its so suddenly and out of context. When she dies, I should feel emotion but I didnt feel shit Venkatesh is jobless or whatever hes trying for cricket team, they find match for him for thammudu. There are 3 brothers. They go to the pellichoppulu and say please serve the coffee for Pelli koduku and she serves his brother. He feels avamanam. When taking a photo, he sees a girl on video and falls in love with her. Finds same girl on train and when she goes to bathroom he puts a cassette in her bag. She comes back home and listens to it and falls for him. He finally goes to Pellichoopulu and then hears the girls voice and he starts singing, girl recognizes him and they hug and cut panna Ammo Ammayena song They get married much to the irritation of her sister and they come to a wedding and while theyre eating, she insults them. Eating also insults? What the fuck is wrong with you? So illogical and cinrgwrorthy. Such athi He comes back home to treat his friends and you'd think its funny but its so cringeworthy and not funny at all Ahuthi Prasad gives him a bribe and idk where such people exist much like Nuvvu nenu movie and Venkatesh agrees and then starts ill treating Julie in the name of promise. So artificial as he feels bad every time Climax is peaks of illogical stuff. Venky and Aarti get ready to leave but they have enough time to stay in the station and watch the press conference on some tv in the station. Julie and Michael have enough time to come to station and she sings Gaali chirugaali and he hears her from being so far away and they hug and go away Sunil and Dhamarvarupu entire comedy track actually every comedy scene is cringe max. Its not funny at all. That too Sunil tries to do his best but the comedy didnt work at all. Direction by Vikraman is terrible. No emotion, no entertainment, and nothing. It's flat out boring and just unintentionally funny. Movie was aged terribly and is a rod in present day. Venky has many great family movies but Vasantham is not one of them in present day.

Two masala gems came to mind when we thought about greed: Bluffmaster! (2005) and Judaai (1997). On the surface these stories are about wanting money, but both of them have more to say about material gain entices people to act out of line with what society demands. Both films are also full of great performances, but, unsurprisingly, we spend most of our time gushing over Sridevi and Urmila. Chanti: don't remember squat except climax fight in the mud but the movie sucked. Not a Raviteja film at all. Siobhan director, Charmi heroine, and Atul Kulkarni villain Dongula Mutha: Created huge back then because This film is the first of its kind in Indian cinema as it was shot with just 7 crew members and in a record of 5 days. Prior to filming, Varma announced that this film has no budget and that the cast and crew will not be taking remunerations until the film hits theaters. Puri Jagannadh is co-director while director Harish Shankar (Mirapakaya fame) is associate director.[2] Music is composed by Sathyam while the background score has been rendered by Amar Mohile (of Sarkar Raj fame). Veera: rod ka baap, Baasha template with Raviteja, basically he lives with his sister and bava in a village and villain are trying to kill him, Taps overreaction and exposing and then Kajal is Raviteja wife in flashback and she dies pretty sure. Sridevi of Eeswar fame is Raviteja sister but its so badly directed by Ramesh Varma and so outdated routine, and cringe. Rod max movie. Nippu: Saw it in theaters nothing better to do, Sreeram gets sentenced to jail for killing his wife in UAE and Raviteja tries to help his friend. Gunashekar mark rod with YVS mark paithyam all over it. Thaman music Nena oh Nenaa and Oh Pilla are decent, Deeksha Seth is also a waste. Useless. Sarocharu: Stupidest movie. Listened to the songs a lot before release Jaga Jagadeka Veera is underrated song. Raviteja meets Kamal and explains to her his previous love story divorce with Richa then it turns out to be actually his friend and his wife story. Then why the f*** did you even say the story this entire time dude?????? Parasuram mark rod. DSP music only saving grace. Kick 2: Destined to fail because Ileana is not in the movie and not a direct sequel to Kick, worst story, and it was postponed a 100 times. Supposed to come in May, then got delayed to late August. Ravitejas son goes looking for Kick and then goes to some remote village being terrorized by Ravi Kishan with North Indians there and Rahul is somehow a village girl. Insult to the first movie. Raja the Great: Raviteja took a break after Bengal tiger and didnt do a film for almost 2 years then signed a film with Anil Ravipudi. With a lot of hype, it released in October 2017 and I felt its a rod. Ravipudi mark cringe comedy with Gunna Gunna Mamidi bit being peaks of cringe. Made me start questioning where Telugu comedy is headed then I accepted it's dead. Blind guy is basically superman and then his mom gets kidnapped and hearing the bells on a train he rescues her on a moving train. Zero logic, and cringe movie. Only darkness fight was funny. Touch Chesi Choodu: outdated movie, some old City action movie but you can tell its badly directed. Directed by Vikram Sirikonda, KIKK Mirapakay, Race Gurram screenwriter, story by Vakkantham Vamsi, came in off-season Feb 2018. Music by JAM8 apprentice band of Pritam, Manasa song is classic Amar Akbar Anthony: biggest robbery and insult to NYPD, first of all after Aagadu, Bruce Lee and Mister, Sreenu Vaitla kept saying he's changed. He went to J Lo's old house in NY and then Ileana comeback after 6 years in Devudu Chesina Manushulu. Entire movie filmed in NYC and routine revenge drama. Raviteja plays 3 roles with Aparichitudu split personality disorder then Ileana also has the same disease. Sunil is there and a host of comedians but its torture. Only Satya as KA Paul was funny with a KA Paul spoof and WATA thing. Khiladi: 2nd combo of Raviteja and Ramesh Varma after Veera, Raviteja actually stayed away from promotions and could see his disappointment with director and output throughout. Movie is so stupid and has a twist every 2 seconds. Dhamaka: It's not Raviteja range movie and its cringe max. Put aside the reviews Movie is very boring without any excitement or entertainment Doesn't deserve to be a hit. Disappointing stuff.
Listen to Manjula Narayan discuss with Avijit Ghosh, author, 'When Ardh Satya Met Himmatwala' about the 1980s in Hindi cinema, it was the decade of the dark and powerful police drama Ardh Satya. It was the decade of the kitschy excess of the action comedy Himmatwala. It was a decade of opposites. It was a time of furious change beyond the silver screen, video cassettes brought cinema to drawing rooms and bedrooms; television and one-day cricket emerged as fierce competition to films; piracy put movie theatres in crisis; film stars were elected to the Indian Parliament in surprising numbers.

We continue Indian Cinema Month, this year to coincide with launch of the Bollywood Cinema Club, our first all Indian cinema biweekly podcast, with a Tamil-language film that begs the question: if a man is interested in a woman with amnesia who thinks, talks, and sounds like a child, is he a creep? The Projection Booth's Mike White stops by to help answer that question and more with a look at 1982's Moondram Pirai. Starring Kamal Hassan as the aforementioned man and Sridevi as the aforementioned woman, it's an interesting take on the romantic drama that pulls no punches and gives the characters exactly what they deserve, and then some. The film was remade the next year with mostly the same actors in Hindi but suffers subtitle issues on Prime Video version; we don't get it either. For more episodes of the Kulturecast along with many more podcasts that are guaranteed to be your new favorite audio obsession, check out Weirding Way Media at weirdingwaymedia.com.

Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast brings to you the first of its Patreon specials with KHUDA GAWAH (1992). But first, we discuss the Indian content revealed during Netflix's Tudum event. Our picks range from KHUFIYA by Vishal Bhardwaj and starring Tabu and Ali Fazal, to QALA starring house favorite Tripti Dimri who teams up with Baabil Khan (in his feature debut), Swastika Mukherjee, and director Anvita Dutt Guptan whose BULBBUL was one of our favorite pandemic films. Our main review this week, however, is Khuda Gawah, a grand Bollywood extravaganza set in Afghanistan. Directed by Mukul Anand, this movie is a step back into time with Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, and Sridevi in leading roles with a maniacal Danny Denzongpa and meek Shilpa Shirodkar bringing up the rear. Our choice of this film was fuelled by our Patreon channel — select subscription tiers are able to choose movies for us to watch. Satyajit Ray's Pratidwandi starring Dhritiman Chatterjee, the first of his Calcutta Trilogy, released in October 1970. K Balachander's Varumayin Niram Sivappu released almost exactly ten years later, in November 1980, and starred Kamal Haasan and Sridevi. The two films bookend an important decade in Indian history. Pratidwandi came at the height of the Naxalite movement in West Bengal and Varumayin Niram Sivappu was made in the immediate aftermath of Emergency and the Lok Sabha elections of 1980. A tumultuous decade for India, Congress and Indira Gandhi, possibly casting a long shadow in the political landscape of today. Deepauk and Aditya are joined in this episode by Sohini Chattopadhyay, an award winning independent journalist from Kolkata with bylines in New York Times, Al Jazeera, Mint, The Hindu and SCMP among others. Janhvi Kapoor knows what expectation is. The daughter of legend Sridevi and producer Boney Kapoor tells Haroon Rashid that she wants to earn the love for who she is. They chat about the pressures that come with life under the spotlight and how Janhvi navigates her rising star on her own terms.
A look back at one of the many iconic films Sridevi made. Much like RGV's film, this pod is an ode to Sridevi the star.
