This is the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I am Ichha SharmaToday is 28th of May and here are today's headlines. The Congress has renewed its call for President's Rule in Manipur after fresh violence in Jiribam and the resignation of BJP MLA Ashab Uddin. Party spokesperson Supriya Shrinate alleged that the N. Biren Singh-led government had failed to maintain law and order, calling the administration “invisible.” The opposition said the constitutional machinery had collapsed, with thousands still displaced since the 2023 ethnic clashes. The BJP, meanwhile, has defended its state government's handling of the situation. And from Manipur, we turn to Assam, where a legal battle is unfolding over alleged police encounters. The Supreme Court has stayed proceedings initiated by the Assam Human Rights Commission into 183 alleged fake police encounters that occurred between May 2021 and June 2022. A petition filed by a senior advocate claimed the panel had no jurisdiction, as many of the cases were already pending before courts. The Commission had asked Assam's top police and home officials to respond to its notice. The apex court has now called for affidavits from all parties within three weeks.Next, in Tamil Nadu, a remark by actor Kamal Haasan has sparked a linguistic and political row. Speaking at a Tamil Sangam event, Kamal Haasan claimed Tamil predates Kannada, citing a 2,500-year-old Tamil inscription. Karnataka BJP leaders sharply objected, accusing him of stoking regional discord. CT Ravi and Basanagouda Patil Yatnal called the comment disrespectful. Haasan later clarified that he was referencing historical records, not undermining any language. Two men in Kerala's Palakkad district have been arrested for assaulting a 24-year-old tribal man, alleging he had stolen a hen. A video of the attack, which took place on May 18 in Malampuzha, surfaced online, prompting public outcry. The accused were identified and booked under various sections, including those of the SC/ST Atrocities Act. Police confirmed the victim belongs to the Irula tribal community. Two Indian-origin men in the US have been sentenced to 33 and 63 months in prison for their role in a human smuggling operation. The case involved a family of four from Gujarat who died from exposure near the US-Canada border in 2022. The smugglers charged up to $100,000 for illegal crossings and had arranged the family's final, fatal attempt near Manitoba. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express

Entry-level hatchbacks are popular no more

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Tuesday, May 14, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:Indian benchmark indices remained upbeat on Monday, with both Nifty and Sensex closing the session in the green. BSE's 30-company Sensex surged 0.15 percent while NSE's Nifty-50 saw a rise of 0.22 percent.Mini-cars have long been the gateway to four-wheeled transport for many in India, but they're facing a bit of a rough patch. Maruti Suzuki, the big player in India's car market, is hitting the pause button on sprucing up this segment. Why? Well, it boils down to costs and affordability. Right now, Maruti dominates the hatchback market, holding about 70% of it, but they're choosing to hold off on upgrades until these cars become more wallet-friendly for the average buyer. Their mainstays—the Alto, Celerio, and S-Presso—won't see significant changes for a while. Maruti's betting that once incomes go up, these entry-level cars will become popular again among first-time buyers. But here's the kicker: the overall market for entry-level cars has really dipped, from more than 470 thousand units back in 2011 to just over 160 thousand in 2024. Customers are more inclined towards entry-level SUVs instead. Mint's autos correspondent Alisha Sachdev writes on the shrinking market for entry-level hatchbacks.Nasdaq-listed IT firm Cognizant, which has more than 250 thousand employees in India, is getting tough with employees who are resisting returning to the office. They've warned that continued absence could lead to termination. This move, detailed in a letter from April 15, makes Cognizant one of the first major IT companies to use firing to get people back to their office cubicles. Until recently, Cognizant was flexible about office attendance, letting individual teams decide based on their project needs. But earlier this year, they changed gears and started asking their employees in India to be in the office three days a week. They even began tracking office attendance closely. Mint's IT correspondent Jas Bardia reports on the emerging trend of IT companies using termination as a tool to get people back to office. Companies like Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys have also been tightening policies around office attendance, linking them to pay hikes and bonuses, indicating a significant shift from the more flexible remote work policies during the pandemic. The banking sector is basking in the glow of an extraordinary earnings season for the March quarter. State Bank of India, the country's largest lender, just posted a record-breaking profit of more than 20,000 crore rupees for the quarter, outshining even Reliance Industries, India's most valuable company. Punjab National Bank is another state-run lender that's making waves, with its net profit skyrocketing almost three-fold. Private players including HDFC and Axis Bank, too have reported strong numbers. However, not everything is smooth sailing. The robust post-pandemic economic recovery has led to a surge in credit growth, especially in the retail segment, which has outpaced deposit growth. This situation has pushed the loan-to-deposit ratio to a decadal high of 80%, signalling potential liquidity and credit risks. Banks are now caught in a tough spot. They need to either reduce loans, which could stifle growth, or increase deposits, which might hurt margins because higher interest rates would have to be offered to attract depositors. Mint's Abhishek Mukherjee examines what's behind the stellar fourth-quarter performance of banks and whether the results show the complete picture. Tata Motors experienced a standout fiscal 2024, thanks mainly to the performance of its British subsidiary, Jaguar Land Rover. JLR's margin climbed impressively to 8.5% from just 2.4% the previous year, a boost attributed to better scale, reduced costs for input materials, and strong sales of the Range Rover and Defender models. Additionally, JLR generated a whopping ₹24,000 crore in free cash flow for FY24, significantly cutting down TaMo's net automotive debt from ₹43,700 crore at the end of the previous year to ₹16,000 crore by March's end.Looking ahead, Tata Motors is potentially on track to erase its net debt by FY25, thanks to the continued cash flow from JLR. Mint's Manish Joshi brings a snapshot of Tata Motors' fourth-quarter performance and how the growth of its British subsidiary is on its way to a slower lane. The buzz is real! Cinema owners across India are all smiles as they gear up for a slew of blockbuster releases from the South. With big names and even bigger stories, movies like Allu Arjun's Pushpa 2, Prabhas and Deepika Padukone's "Kalki 2898 AD," and  Kamal Haasan's "Indian 2," are set to hit the screens in the coming months. Experts are predicting these films could rake in a whopping ₹1,500 crore at the box office. After a bit of a slump, with few Hindi movies catching eyes since the Eid weekend in April, these multi-language, star-studded films from the South are ready to bring the magic back. They're following in the footsteps of giants like "Baahubali" and "RRR," banking on a mix of high-octane action, deep drama, and emotional hooks to pull in audiences, including those in the Hindi-speaking belt through dubbed versions.Mint's media and entertainment correspondent Lata Jha spoke to several experts and industry insiders who are looking at the upcoming South Indian projects with anticipation, hoping to attract the mass-market audiences. Mini cars stall as some can't afford them, some want moreNot working from office might lead to job loss, Cognizant tells employeesBanks had a blockbuster quarter. To restore parity after discussing an old Kamal Haasan film we thought we must do a Rajinikanth film. Ok, that's not the reason but we felt this Rajinikanth film must be discussed. This is 1978 and Rajinikanth's early years in Tamil cinema. It's the year he stamped his authority and signaled the coming of a legend of Indian cinema. Mullum Malarum, directed by Mahendran with cinematography by Balu Mahendra and music by Ilaiyaraaja had Rajinikanth, Shoba, Sarath Babu and Jayalaxmi. The film was based on a novel by Uma Chandran. A seminal film in not just the crew's and Rajinikanth's careers but to Tamil cinema itself, the film informed the direction Tamil cinema took from there on and also colored the future characters played by the superstar. To talk about all that and more we invited two of the biggest fans of the film. Lokesh Kanagaraj's Vikram is just a week away and the expectations are immense for the film starring Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil. The furor began in late 2020 when they released a teaser revealing the title accompanied by a sampling of one of the greatest title tracks by Ilaiyaraaja - Vikram from the film of the same name that released in 1986. The 1986 film was a mammoth effort in terms of scripting and production. A screenplay written by Kamal Haasan and writer/novelist Sujatha adapted from the latter's serialized story and directed by Rajashekar the making of Vikram is as much of a lore as its aftermath, influences and the new film it has spawned (though not a sequel). Vikram has Kamal Haasan as an intelligence agent playing the closest James Bond could come to Indian cinema back till that point (and after Jai Shankar in Tamil cinema). It also had Sathyaraj as the villain with Lissy, Dimple Kapadia, Amjad Khan and Charuhasan completing a role call of who's who from different language industries. Guru aka Lazygeek joins us to talk about how Sujatha and Kamal Haasan met, their journey through cinema, their collaboration on Vikram, the production effort, how the film turned out and how it has aged. Tamil Male Stars and Promising Young Filmmakers - How does it work?

The recent big announcement in Tamil cinema is the collaboration of director Nelson (Kolamaavu Kokila, Doctor, yet to release Beast with Vijay) with Rajinikanth. Since the time Rajinikanth collaborated twice with Pa. Ranjith and once with Karthik Subbaraj, there have always been calls for the biggest stars - meaning male actors who guarantee huge weekend openings at box office - to work with young, promising filmmakers making a different kind of cinema, themselves a coterie that came into being around 2008 in Tamil cinema. The list of filmmakers has only grown since then and it's been a great decade. From calls for Kamal Haasan at his height of stardom and experimentation to work with some of them to Rajini working with them and Vijay collaborating with Lokesh Kanagaraj, and Ajith with H. Vinoth (and we've had more than a decade of Dhanush-Vetrimaaran), fans believe this is a treat. Currently we have upcoming films like Lokesh Kanagaraj's Vikram with Kamal Haasan, Vijay's Beast with Nelson, Vetrimaaran's Vaadivaasal with Suriya and Pa Ranjith's film with Vikram to name a few. At The Other Banana, we wondered how healthy these pairings are for Tamil cinema? An industry notorious for the way it manages production and budgets, do the numbers make sense and does the quality suffer? What is the equation between the star actor and the filmmaker? What do they get out of each other and are they satisfied? Who are the biggest stars today, who were the stars we thought could take Tamil cinema to great heights in 2005 and where are they today? What do distributors feel about this subject? Do the filmmakers matter to them the way they do for fans? To talk about all these things and more, reporter and journalist Subha Rao joined us. Subha has covered Tamil cinema for close to twenty years now and she has been at the forefront from the days of Rajini-Kamal to today's Ajith-Vijay. Young kids might find it hard to believe but there was a time when Ajith used to give interviews and Subha has interviewed him among others like Vikram et al. We've linked to some of her recent and past works before. She comes armed with a wealth of knowledge and experience and stories from distributors and filmmakers and what they think about this topic.
