Tien jaar later heeft de site van de KU Leuven al meer dan 2 miljoen unieke gebruikers bereikt. Bram de Ridder spreekt met Bart Geeraedts over zijn boek Taal grijpt altijd in, dat in 2025 verscheen bij ISVW Uitgevers.   Daarin betoogt hij dat de taal die we gebruiken ons begrip van psychisch lijden beïnvloedt. Bram vertelt over de risico's van stoornistaal en stoornisdenken voor de samenleving. Ook bespreekt hij een mogelijke andere benadering: een taal die ruimte schept en openstaat voor het ongekende. In deze aflevering ontvangt Alex Pastoor een veelzijdige gast: columnist, dichter, theatermaker, schrijver en muzikant Nico Dijkshoorn. Een man die met taal werkt zoals een ander met gereedschap scherp, speels en altijd eerlijk. Nico Dijkshoorn doet veel met taal. Taal die ook in de kleedkamer, in besprekingen en simpelweg in het leven heel belangrijk is. Een interessante gast om eens te verwelkomen in de podcast. Greetings once more in love, light, and wisdom as one.    Karra takes over for her boss at this point as we explore an old energy I had discovered when I was a child and remembered during a recent healing I had done. It involves holding your arm up and using what Karra calls the collected energy available to everyone to help keep the arm in one place. It's like invisible jets of air that you can feel physically to the point of laying your arm against the generated force. In fact, that is what her and I agree the force is mostly like which inspires a quote from Yoda of Star Wars from her. This force we discussed was then theorized as being used in healing and helping others when they feel drained. As she says, the energy being used attracts other energy which, added to the person's own energy and directed thoughts give it substance. She adds that who are hyper sometimes are helped by having the energy drained from them to be used for helping power astral travel for example. One thing not explained clearly in the tape was that I was going to speak to the triplets still in the womb of Tia to answer questions and inadvertently helped them choose their names. Tia would be sedated during this and had asked for help to explain the third dimension to her cubs. Karra then makes way for her little sis to take over from there and we discuss using that force covered earlier in conjunction with coercion. As it turns out, the two go together well. It also brings up the story of the past lives of Mark and myself back when we were brothers in Atlantis and how the coercion used then by me corrupted absolutely. This then was a life where those same mistakes could be rectified by the proper learning the morals and reasons for using coercion. Kiri admits to reminding herself why she is using that skill. Then unexpectedly we get the guest speaker of Wing Commander Taal showing up a little bit tipsy with his new girlfriend who would one day become his bond mate and mother of his child. We get to talking about the R&R the two of them were enjoying until going back onto patrols where she would now become his wing lady. Noem je ze 'vluchtelingen' of zijn het nieuwkomers? Alleen al door een ander woord te gebruiken, verandert het gesprek. Daarover praat ik vandaag met Eva Heezemans, Ggz behandelaar, projectleider Mentale zorg voor statushouders en medisch coördinator voor de opvang van Oekraïners.  We praten over wat het zo lastig maakt om nieuwkomers goed te helpen. Dat heeft te maken met de combi van wat zij in het land van herkomst en op de reis hiernaartoe meegemaakt hebben en het nog geen echte plek hebben in Nederland. Tel daarbij de onbekendheid met ons zorgsysteem, de angst voor gezagsdragers en het taboe voor psychische klachten op, en je snapt waarom mensen niet snel hulp vragen.  Wat kunnen wij doen, hoe kunnen wij hen bereiken? is het heel anders werken dan met mensen die in Nederland zijn opgegroeid? In grote lijnen niet, want we zijn allemaal mensen. Contact en verbinding is de basis, en daar kun je steeds weer naar terug. Neem de tijd, juist als je haast voelt. Toch zijn er dingen waar je op kunt letten. Informeel en laagdrempelig past veel beter dan ons formele zorgsysteem, maken we voldoende gebruik van alle informele initiatieven? We stellen misschien wel de verkeerde of gewoon teveel vragen, omdat wij dat gewend zijn. Zo komen we vaak binnen: 'vertel maar wat er aan de hand is'. Maar die directheid past minder bij de meeste andere culturen. Houd het concreet, vraag naar de klachten die iemand heeft in plaats van naar wat hij heeft meegemaakt.  Benieuwd naar meer? Op Saterdag 20 September gesels Merlyn van der Rheede, projekbestuurder van die Afrikaanse Taalraad, met spesifieke werksaamhede in die noorde van die land, op Kopskuif. Skakel gerus in en kom hoor hoe Merlyn gesels oor taal wat meer is as bloot 'n kommunikasiemiddel – dis jou identiteit. Daar word ook gesels oor die bevindinge van Merlyn se empiriese navorsing, die ruimtes wat geskep kan word om Afrikaans as 'n inklusiewe taal te vestig, en oor die Afrikaanse Taalraad se werksaamhede in die Noorde.

In de caravan van mijn moeder hing jarenlang een plank boven haar bed met een zelfgemaakte spreuk die over de liefde ging. Mooi bedoeld, maar één woord in die spreuk gaf haar leven een hele andere lading. Dat woord hield haar – onbewust – jarenlang op afstand van wat ze misschien het liefste wilde.Het zegt veel over hoe taal ons beïnvloedt. Vooral door dat ene woord dat we zo vaak gebruiken: niet. Denk maar eens aan hoe vaak je het zegt tegen je kinderen, je collega's of jezelf. Niet rennen. Niet zeuren. Niet vergeten. Ons brein is er slecht in. Het hoort wel het ‘niet', maar het ziet vooral het beeld dat erbij hoort: rennen, zeuren, vergeten. En precies daardoor stuur je jezelf of de ander ongemerkt de verkeerde kant op.Ik ontdekte hoe groot het verschil is toen ik die spreuk van mijn moeder veranderde. Van een zin die afremt naar een zin die uitnodigt. En dat is wat taal kan doen: blokkeren, of in beweging zetten.In deze aflevering neem ik je mee in hoe ons brein woorden opslaat, waarom we zo vaak geneigd zijn om te zeggen wat we níet willen en wat er gebeurt als je je taal omdraait. Je zult merken dat één kleine aanpassing al een wereld van verschil maakt.

Peut-on prévoir une éruption volcanique… en observant la couleur des arbres ? Cela peut sembler étonnant, mais c'est une piste que les scientifiques explorent de plus en plus sérieusement. Une équipe internationale a récemment démontré qu'avant certaines éruptions, les forêts autour des volcans deviennent visiblement plus vertes — un changement subtil, mais détectable depuis l'espace.Le mécanisme derrière ce phénomène est lié aux gaz volcaniques. Bien avant qu'un volcan n'entre en éruption, son activité interne augmente. Des fissures apparaissent, laissant s'échapper des gaz invisibles, notamment du dioxyde de carbone (CO₂). Ce gaz lourd s'infiltre dans le sol, où il se dissout partiellement dans l'eau souterraine, modifiant ainsi la chimie locale.Pour les arbres, cet excès de CO₂ dans le sol agit comme un fertilisant naturel. En effet, le dioxyde de carbone est l'un des éléments clés de la photosynthèse. Lorsqu'il devient plus abondant, les arbres accélèrent leur production de biomasse : leurs feuilles deviennent plus denses, leur taux de chlorophylle augmente, et la canopée prend une teinte plus intense de vert.Ce changement n'est pas toujours visible à l'œil nu, mais les satellites équipés de capteurs multispectraux ou hyperspectraux peuvent le détecter. Ces instruments mesurent précisément la réflexion de la lumière par la végétation, notamment dans les longueurs d'onde associées à la chlorophylle.Des études récentes, notamment sur le volcan Taal aux Philippines et le Mount Etna en Italie, ont montré que ces "signatures vertes" peuvent apparaître plusieurs semaines à plusieurs mois avant une éruption. Ce signal, couplé à d'autres indicateurs — comme les séismes, la déformation du sol ou l'émission de gaz — permet d'affiner les modèles de prévision.Ce qui rend cette approche si précieuse, c'est qu'elle offre une vue d'ensemble : grâce aux satellites, on peut surveiller en continu des zones entières, même inaccessibles ou dangereuses. Cela permet de repérer des anomalies précoces et de déclencher des alertes.Bien sûr, le verdissement des forêts n'est qu'un indice parmi d'autres. Un changement de couleur ne signifie pas à lui seul qu'une éruption est imminente. Mais intégré à un système global de surveillance, il devient un signal d'alerte précieux, surtout dans les régions densément peuplées autour des volcans.En résumé : en devenant plus verts sous l'effet du CO₂ volcanique, les arbres jouent, à leur manière, le rôle de sentinelles naturelles. "Anything that shows solidarity of Palestine is being mischaracterized quite erroneously as antisemitism. That's the way in which they are trying to get us to stop speaking about Palestine," says Momodou Taal, a Cornell University graduate student and activist now facing deportation after challenging the Trump administration in court.The risks of political speech have escalated dramatically for international students like Taal. He spoke to The Intercept Briefing yesterday, underscoring the chilling reality he and his peers now face. “It's not just that you might get kicked out of school or suspended,” says Taal, “but you are threatened with deportation and ICE custody now. That's what's at stake here." Late last week, federal officials sent Taal's attorney a midnight email demanding he appear before Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Tuesday. The email provided no grounds for the request. This typically marks the beginnings of removal proceedings against an individual in the U.S. Only afterward, over the weekend, did the Department of Justice claim Taal's student visa had been revoked on March 14th by the State Department due to "disruptive protests" and "creating a hostile environment for Jewish students." The timing is telling—just days after Taal, a dual Gambian and British citizen, joined other Cornell plaintiffs in a lawsuit accusing the Trump administration of targeting international students for supporting Palestinian rights. In their complaint the plaintiffs state “The First Amendment protects ‘people' and not citizens alone. This includes non-citizens living in the U.S.” Taal had participated in pro-Palestine protests at Cornell. His legal team argues the order to appear before ICE demonstrates their central claim that deportation is being weaponized "in retribution" for lawful political speech.Despite the pressure, Taal sees the government's actions as evidence of weakness, not strength. "You don't repress to this level when you're in a position of strength. When you have to quell speech, it means that you are realizing that the outside world or public opinion is swaying in one direction. So I think now would not be the time to be afraid. I know it's a very frightening moment, but for me, this is the time to double down."As Tuesday approaches, Taal remains resolute about the potential consequences. "If I have to leave the country, it would be back to the UK. I know the weather's terrible and your listeners probably don't like beans and toast either, but it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world going back to the UK. The student encampment movement last school year turned institutions of higher education into flashpoints of struggle over Israel's ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, US support for it, and the right to speak out against it. This year, college and university campuses have become laboratories of repression where different administrative efforts to silence Palestine solidarity and antiwar demonstrators are being deployed. And that is playing out right now at Cornell University.    As Aaron Fernando writes at The Nation, “Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York, has taken disciplinary action against an international student that will likely force him to leave the country, and could have a chilling effect on other international students participating in political protests. Momodou Taal is a PhD candidate in Africana studies and a graduate student worker, attending Cornell under the F-1 visa program. In the last academic year, Taal joined student-led actions demanding that Cornell divest from industries complicit in Israel's attacks on civilians in Gaza.”    The Cornell grad worker union, Cornell Graduate Students United-UE, released a statement condemning the university's disciplinary actions against Taal, and is demanding the administration bargain with the union “over the effects of the discipline administered to Taal.” “CGSU-UE condemns Taal's suspension, which represents a disturbing pattern of discriminatory discipline against marginalized graduate workers.
