Voters in Brazil just took a leftward turn in electing former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, ousting the far-right populist incumbent. Next week, polls show US voters may move in the opposite direction, dealing a blow to Democratic President Joe Biden and his party. This week's Stephanomics episode explores the economic and political winds in two of the world's largest nations. First, Flanders talks US midterms with Anna Wong, Bloomberg's chief US economist, and reporter Nancy Cook. Overall, the US economy is functioning better than it appears to those focusing on inflation, with a strong job market and high balances in bank accounts, Wong says. Yet, high prices have a way of making consumers feel things are gloomier than they are, and that's not good for Democrats. And if Republicans seize control of one or both houses of Congress, Cook notes that will spell the end of meaningful economic legislation from the Biden administration until the end of the term. Next, reporter Maria Eloisa Capurro explains the challenges facing Lula after his defeat of Jair Bolsonaro. Brazil has seen progress this year on inflation, with rates falling from 12% to an expected 5.6% next month. However, economists note the improvement is less impressive than it seems, generated in large part by tax cuts instead of real changes in the economy. Meantime, the new president will be under pressure to deliver on campaign promises to cut taxes for the poor, increase them for the rich and provide a minimum income level for the most needy. "There should be no factual reasons that would push the consumer to buy new products rather than refurbished products", here is the motto that has driven the Startup Back Market since its creation. For this 9th episode, it is with great pleasure that we received Camille Richard, CSR Manager of the French unicorn, at the microphone of On The Way. On the strength of this leitmotif and with the aim of extending the lifespan of appliances already in circulation, in order to combat overproduction and its harmful effects, the Back Market teams have redesigned the experience of buying refurbished products so that the consumer prefers it to new. This experience must be as good or better than those offered by market leaders in electronics. As an intermediary, one of the challenges for Back Market has been to obtain and present to the consumer evidence provided by reconditioners by setting up specific processes that guarantee this high level of quality, from reconditioning to delivery, which is essential to gain the trust of buyers. Camille reveals to us behind the scenes of Back Market and underlines that it was crucial to offer the same advantages, the same guarantees, the same range of choices and the same pleasure in purchasing, in order to guarantee the success of this business model based on the circular economy. Thanks to a bold communication, Back Market has managed to change the perception of refurbished products and thus behaviors. The company has adopted a fairly strong brand image, quite quirky, quite humorous, the idea being to make the refurbished sexy: "the buyer must be proud of having chosen refurbished" Camille rightly tells us.  Back Market also informs the consumer of the environmental impact of buying a refurbished item, right from the selection stage. It's a way of making consumers aware of these issues. Even if the price is the primary reason that drives the purchase of refurbished products, consumers are now nearly 25% coming to the site for ecological reasons, whereas they were only 3% at the launch. Thus, to deepen the subject and measure the real impact of a refurbished purchase, for example a telephone, Back Market conducted a particularly instructive impact study with ADEME.  Smartphone manufacturers, for their part, are hammering out a marketing discourse to the consumer in order to push him to buy a latest generation product that he does not necessarily need. With the circular economy and reconditioning, we are in a virtuous logic, which makes it possible to buy a suitable product without feeling guilty and to fight against planned obsolescence. Finally, we can rejoice that these new parallel circuits, around the circular economy, bring up to date forgotten professions, such as repairers. This is what the Murfy startup with which Back Market works has understood. "Repair is a profession with a future and there are many professional opportunities with refurbished and repair to give a second life," says Camille. Pour ce 9ème épisode, c'est avec beaucoup de plaisir que nous avons reçu Camille Richard, Responsable RSE de la licorne française, au micro d'On The Way.   Fort de ce leitmotiv et avec pour objectif d'allonger la durée de vie des appareils déjà en circulation, afin de lutter contre la surproduction et ses effets néfastes, les équipes de Back Market ont repensé l'expérience d'achat du reconditionné pour que le consommateur le préfère au neuf. Cette expérience doit être aussi bonne voire meilleure que celles proposées par les leaders du marché de l'électronique. L'entreprise a adopté une image de marque assez forte, assez décalée, assez humoristique, l'idée étant de rendre le reconditionné sexy : « il faut que l'acheteur soit fier d'avoir choisi du reconditionné » nous précise Camille à juste titre. Back Market informe aussi le consommateur de l'impact environnemental de l'achat d'un reconditionné, dès l'étape de sélection. C'est une façon de sensibiliser les consommateurs à ces enjeux. Même si le prix est le motif premier qui pousse à l'achat de produits reconditionnés, les consommateurs sont aujourd'hui près de 25% à venir sur le site pour des raisons écologiques, alors qu'ils n'étaient que 3% au lancement. Ainsi, pour approfondir le sujet et mesurer l'impact réel d'un achat reconditionné, par exemple un téléphone, Back Market a conduit une étude d'impact particulièrement riche en enseignements avec l'ADEME.  Les constructeurs de smartphones de leur côté, martèlent un discours marketing au consommateur afin de le pousser à acheter un produit dernière génération dont il n'a pas forcément besoin. Avec l'économie circulaire et le reconditionnement, on est dans une logique vertueuse, qui permet d'acheter un produit adapté sans culpabiliser et de lutter contre l'obsolescence programmée.   Enfin, on peut se réjouir que ces nouveaux circuits parallèles, autour de l'économie circulaire, remettent au gout du jour des métiers oubliés, tels que les réparateurs. C'est ce qu'a bien compris la startup Murfy  avec laquelle travaille Back Market. « La réparation est un métier d'avenir et il y a beaucoup d'opportunités professionnelles avec le reconditionné et la réparation pour donner 2ème vie » affirme Camille. Autant de bonnes nouvelles, qui témoignent que nous sommes sur le bon chemin !
