refurbed study finds, Leinster accounts for 4.2 million of Ireland's 7.6 million unused devices

A new study carried out by Fraunhofer Austria Research GmbH and refurbed, Ireland's leading online marketplace for refurbished devices, examined the number of unused devices across European households and their potential for refurbishment. The findings revealed that in Irish households, there are 7.6 million unused devices, or 1.43 old devices per person, of which 2.5 million have the potential to be refurbished and re-enter the market. Dublin City alone holds 874,830 unused smartphones, while households across Leinster account for a total of 4,219,076 old devices. In comparison, Munster has 1,373,346 unused smartphones, and Connacht holds 870,825. The study also found 642 million devices lie idle across European households, 211 million of which are suitable for professional refurbishment. The quantity of raw materials stored in these devices would allow Europe to meet its demand for metals, rare earths and other materials for several years. Speaking on the results, Peter Windischhofer, co-founder of refurbed said, "Two years ago, we commissioned Fraunhofer Austria to calculate life cycle assessment data for selected electronics, quantifying the environmental impact of refurbished vs new devices for the first time. Last year, we built a unique model with Fraunhofer that delivers scientifically verified data for thousands of refurbished phones, laptops, and tablets. Now, with this third study, we can show how much impact we can generate if consumers bring old devices back into the circular economy. This is definitely a call to action to Irish consumers." "Refurbishing smartphones offers huge potential in the circular economy," says Paul Rudorf, project lead at Fraunhofer Austria. "Devices destined to become e-waste are reintroduced into the usage cycle, reducing e-waste, extending product life and lessening the need for critical raw materials. It also minimises the environmental damage caused by mining and production, while offering affordable alternatives to consumers. Refurbishment is essential for preserving resources and promoting sustainability in electronics." On average, European households hold around €8 in the form of unused old smartphones. While this may not sound like much on an individual level, with 642 million unused devices in total, it adds up to a material value of €1.57 billion sitting in Europeans 'junk drawers'' across the EU. On average, buyback programs offer around €100 for devices aged between 2.8 and 4 years, meaning this results in an untapped market value of approximately €6.42 billion. Aside from financial savings, refurbishing unused devices and extending their use could also save the EU about 24 million tons of CO? equivalent and reduce virtual water usage by 8.5 billion cubic meters over the next 3 years. Since 2024, refurbed has provided a trade-in service in Ireland, helping minimise e-waste levels and repurpose old tech. refurbed is playing an active role, allowing Irish consumers to recycle their old devices, give them a new purpose and recover the valuable raw materials they contain. The refurbishment process is continuously monitored and refined, setting a higher benchmark for quality in the refurbished tech industry. To date, refurbed has saved over 270,000 tonnes of CO2, 900 tonnes of e-waste, and 94 billion litres of water since its founding in 2017, and has planted over 6.6 million trees. The friendship of two celebrated Kiwi architects is uncovered in a new documentary.  'Maurice and I' looks at the partnership between Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney and how they refurbished the Christchurch Town Hill after the quakes.  Director Rick Harvie told Mike Hosking he always wanted to make a documentary about the Town Hall, but didn't think it would be a feature-length film.  He says they treated the building as a character, showcasing its creation to it almost losing its life.  Harvie says it was important for him to drill down into the details of the restoration, as it's a Christchurch story, but also a big part of New Zealand's history.  The documentary's currently in cinemas.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Interview with Alex Underwood, MD/CEO of Empire Energy Group Ltd.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/empire-energy-asxeeg-technical-analysis-due-diligence-4162Recording date: 26th January 2024Empire Energy controls huge shale gas resources in Australia's Northern Territory, estimated at over 40 trillion cubic feet by independent assessors. With domestic east coast markets facing looming supply shortfalls amid rising global demand, Empire has a clear strategic production roadmap to monetize these world-scale gas assets.Initially focussed on oil and gas production in the US, Empire pivoted towards acquiring and proving up acreage in the vast onshore Beetaloo Basin after capitalizing on the US shale boom's early stages. Australia's Beetaloo region shares similar shale geology and Empire moved swiftly to build a dominant position. Few companies boast more prime shale acres.Having confirmed world-class volumes of gas in place via drilling vertical and horizontal test wells, Empire is fast-tracking low cost pilot schemes. An initial 3 well development campaign with 60 stage hydraulic fracturing aims to flow test production potential. Early success would derisk substantial follow-on development, likely attracting industry interest.Empire has accelerated pilot production plans by acquiring a second-hand gas facility for a bargain $3 million. Refurbishing this will expedite on-site infrastructure assembly. Along with advanced talks on securing gas sales agreements, first cash flow now looks possible inside 12 months.Beyond pilot schemes, Empire has a multi-stage production growth plan. Phase one fills spare capacity in an existing pipeline traversing Empire's permits. Rapidly expanding output from 25 million cubic feet per day to feed Darwin's energy shortfall would generate over $100 million annual revenue. Subsequent phases look to ramp up production, ultimately targeting 1 billion cubic feet daily for southern LNG exports. Attractive economics expected from initial wells provides cashflow to fund each organic development stage. From an early entry point, Empire Energy offers leveraged exposure to realization of the Beetaloo Basin's full potential. Key de-risking milestones are approaching fast. Cash flow and resource appraisal progress could spotlight Empire's world-scale gas resource. Its disciplined step-by-step commercialization strategy aims to capitalize on strengthening gas market conditions. Targeting first production within 12 months provides investors a near term catalyst.—View Empire Energy Group's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/empire-energy-groupSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

SHOW NOTES: Laundry Room: Doing the laundry is less of a chore with a well-designed laundry room. Here are things to consider when planning that place. Cast Iron Radiators: You can't beat cast iron radiators for adding both comfort and charm to old homes. We've got ideas for refurbishing old radiators. Rental Deposit: When your lease ends, how can you be sure to get your security deposit back? Make your rental look its best with these 5 tips.  Plus, answers to your home improvement questions. Refinishing Old Wood: Susan wants to refinish the old wood that was behind the sheetrock of her walls. She'll need to sand, seal, and stain the wood pieces before adding varnish. Installing a Steam Room: Can you convert a shower into a steam room? It's a great idea that will add value to Victor's home and we offer info about a steam shower generator. Insulating a Roof: After a peaked roof is installed over a flat roof, should you add insulation? We agree Monica can add insulation and remind her to have enough ventilation, too. Structural Support: Brendan bought a home that's raised on piers and was made level after sagging in the middle. Should he add sand to prevent further erosion? He'd be better off installing gutters to direct water away from the foundation. Electrical Wiring: Does electrical wiring need to be replaced when a new electrical box, outlets, and switches are installed? As long as it's not old knob and tube wiring and it's been wired correctly, Christine can leave it alone. Laminate Flooring: Frazier is putting laminate flooring over terracotta Mexican pavers. Floating floors with foam underlayment attached should be easy to install and keep things level. Crawlspace: Is it a good idea to dig out a crawlspace to make more room? We warn Sara it's a bad move because the soil can shift and undermine the house foundation. Light Switches: Russ says his three-way light switch has stopped working correctly. The failure can be at any point and it's a good idea to have an electrician trace the wiring.   Do you have a home improvement or decor question? Camille Richard - Back Market (English Version) : Refurbishing to preserve the planet

On The Way

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 21, 2022 30:19

"There should be no factual reasons that would push the consumer to buy new products rather than refurbished products", here is the motto that has driven the Startup Back Market since its creation. For this 9th episode, it is with great pleasure that we received Camille Richard, CSR Manager of the French unicorn, at the microphone of On The Way. On the strength of this leitmotif and with the aim of extending the lifespan of appliances already in circulation, in order to combat overproduction and its harmful effects, the Back Market teams have redesigned the experience of buying refurbished products so that the consumer prefers it to new. This experience must be as good or better than those offered by market leaders in electronics. As an intermediary, one of the challenges for Back Market has been to obtain and present to the consumer evidence provided by reconditioners by setting up specific processes that guarantee this high level of quality, from reconditioning to delivery, which is essential to gain the trust of buyers. Camille reveals to us behind the scenes of Back Market and underlines that it was crucial to offer the same advantages, the same guarantees, the same range of choices and the same pleasure in purchasing, in order to guarantee the success of this business model based on the circular economy. Thanks to a bold communication, Back Market has managed to change the perception of refurbished products and thus behaviors. The company has adopted a fairly strong brand image, quite quirky, quite humorous, the idea being to make the refurbished sexy: "the buyer must be proud of having chosen refurbished" Camille rightly tells us.  Back Market also informs the consumer of the environmental impact of buying a refurbished item, right from the selection stage. It's a way of making consumers aware of these issues. Even if the price is the primary reason that drives the purchase of refurbished products, consumers are now nearly 25% coming to the site for ecological reasons, whereas they were only 3% at the launch. Thus, to deepen the subject and measure the real impact of a refurbished purchase, for example a telephone, Back Market conducted a particularly instructive impact study with ADEME.  Smartphone manufacturers, for their part, are hammering out a marketing discourse to the consumer in order to push him to buy a latest generation product that he does not necessarily need. With the circular economy and reconditioning, we are in a virtuous logic, which makes it possible to buy a suitable product without feeling guilty and to fight against planned obsolescence. Finally, we can rejoice that these new parallel circuits, around the circular economy, bring up to date forgotten professions, such as repairers. This is what the Murfy startup with which Back Market works has understood. "Repair is a profession with a future and there are many professional opportunities with refurbished and repair to give a second life," says Camille. So much good news, which testifies that we are on the right path! Good listening ! ----------------------- The Back Market  startup was founded in 2014 and is now present in more than 15 countries. The online marketplace offers products from more than 1,200 refurbishers. She has been part of the French unicorns since May 2021 ----------------------- The sites mentioned by Camille: To fight against planned obsolescence: HOP - Halte à l'Obsolescence Programmée (halteobsolescence.org) To recycle your phone: I give my phone (jedonnemontelephone.fr) To repair my appliance: Murfy.fr  ADEME
