In a quiet corner of Wilson County, one man's dedication to service is inspiring both his neighbors and those far beyond Texas. Richard Kimball, a volunteer with the American Red Cross Greater San Antonio Chapter, has become a shining example of resilience, compassion, and community spirit. After the devastating loss of Alice, his wife of 48 years, Richard made the life-changing decision to move from Luling to La Vernia last year with his son, Josh, and daughter-in-law, Kimberly, seeking a new beginning and a way to heal. Send me a message. In this episode of Talking D&T, I explore the complex nature of design and make activities in design and technology education. Drawing on research from Richard Kimball, David Perry, and Robert McCormick, I unpack the pedagogical approach of design and make that underpins our subject and challenge some common misconceptions about "the design process".A key insight emerges around the balance between process and outcome in D&T education. When we become fixated on the final product, we risk compromising valuable learning opportunities along the way. I examine Matt McLain's framework of expansive versus restrictive approaches, questioning when it's appropriate to give pupils freedom to make decisions and when more structured guidance serves them better.I also explore McCormick's notion of 'revelation and ritual' in design processes, highlighting the danger of following steps mechanistically without making learning explicit to pupils. This raises important considerations about how we develop pupils' design and technology capability rather than simply guiding them through predetermined steps. For D&T teachers, this episode offers a chance to reflect on your own practice. How do you balance the focus on outcomes with the development of skills and knowledge? Where in your projects do pupils have genuine opportunities to make decisions, experience failure, and justify their choices?Whether you're teaching in a primary or secondary setting, these considerations are crucial for developing authentic design and technology capability in your pupils. How might you adapt your planning to create a more balanced approach to design and make activities in your classroom?Acknowledgement:Some of the supplementary content for this podcast episode was crafted with the assistance of Claude, an AI language model developed by Anthropic. What is D&T Capability? Back to Basics

Send me a message. In this episode, I delve into the fundamental purpose of the design and technology curriculum, focusing on the concept of D&T capability. Drawing from seminal research by Richard Kimball and Kay Stables, I explore how this capability encompasses creative and critical thinking, problem-solving, and solution creation within authentic contexts.I unpack how D&T capability isn't something that simply emerges through teaching knowledge and practical skills – it requires careful, structured curriculum planning. The episode highlights two particularly fascinating aspects: the role of iterative design (which, contrary to popular belief, isn't a new concept from the 2013 National Curriculum), and the importance of authentic learning contexts that can extend into unknown future scenarios. For D&T teachers, this episode offers valuable insights into curriculum planning that deliberately develops pupils' capacity for creative and critical thinking over time. Whether you're teaching in primary or secondary, you'll find practical considerations for building what I call pupils' 'growing toolbox' of technical skills, strategic thinking, and designerly strategies. This exploration of D&T capability is particularly relevant as schools continue to shape their curriculum intent. How do you structure your curriculum to develop these capabilities? Are you planning for progression from Year 1 through to GCSE and beyond?Connect with me through Speakpipe or email to share your thoughts on developing D&T capability in your context. Anakin and Ahsoka are leading an invasion of Cato Neimoidia in their starfighters. Anakin gets cocky and is covered in buzz droids. R2 says don't threaten me with a good time and indulges in some fun sized droid murder. Unfortunately he can't clear Anakin's undercarriage, and it is filthy with buzz droids (I passed out from STD joke choice paralysis when writing this for a few minutes.)Yoda Spacetimes(™) Anakin and tells him: “his butt back to Coruscant get.” Someone bombed the Jedi temple! The council thinks that it was perhaps… a Jedi? Since they know Anakin and Ahsoka weren't there they are the ones tasked with investigating.Mace has also tasked a droid named Rizzo with investigating. Russo and Ahsoka go to interview the survivors. A Pantoran, knowing that the Jedi can't find their own butts with two hands, gives Ahsoka and Russo a solid lead: Jakkar Bomani.Anakin says that this must have been a well planned out caper to escape notice by the Jedi, probably involving a ridiculous accent and a fake mustache. Family and friends of the victims gather and Leta, Jakkar's wife, makes her presence known.Meanwhile Ahsoka and Russo have recreated the explosion with a hologram. They find no bomb residue, but they do find nano-droids. Jakkar's file indicates he's a munitions expert with a specialty in nano weaponry.Russo has found Jakkar's hand with nano-droids in his blood stream: so he 'set us up the bomb,' as it were. Anakin and Ahsoka investigate the run down tenement that Jakkar lives in and they get so close to the truth when they say that they thought working for the Jedi paid better. They find Jakkar's last meal was laced with nano-droids. Leta confesses, but says this is bigger than they know! (I mean, it could be smaller than a bread box and that would still be true for the Jedi...) But for now, the Jedi are cleared! The Jedi are trying to return to normalcy as Master Yoda eugoogalizes the fallen Jedi. Ahsoka talks to Barriss Offee, who is taking this hard since she trained with one of the fallen: Tutso Mara.Tarkin tells Anakin, Ahsoka & Barriss that the bomber, Letta Turmond, has been captured. Letta will be held by the military since “clones and civilians died as well”. Anakin tells Ahsoka to comfort Barriss, and follows Tarkin into the lift with basically a “Women! Am I right?” kind of comment. While comforting Barriss, Tarkin Spacetimes (™) in to say that Letta will only speak with Ahsoka. Letta reveals that a Jedi made her do it, and that this Jedi thinks the the once-peacekeepers need to stop their warmongering. After Ahsoka gains her trust, Letta reveals that is was Jedi Master Aaaaarrrrgggghhhh. The video of the cell shows Ahsoka, with arms outstretched, while Letta is being force-choked… and there is no audio. As such, Ahsoka looks to have killed her and is imprisoned for the crime.Anakin tries to visit, but he is refused per Tarkin's orders. Ahsoka sees a keycard in the hallway, force swipes it, and gets out of her cell. She runs into stunned clones, and sees her comlink and lightsabers on the ground. She then comes across dead clones as well… And she's getting framed. While searching every hen-house, farmhouse & outhouse; Anakin finds her, she proclaims that she didn't kill her wife in her best Harrison Ford voice, then proceeds to Richard Kimball onto a passing ship.https://twitter.com/ClosingCrawlhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/closing-crawl/id1530133296https://www.closingcrawl.com/Merch at: https://bit.ly/spacetimetmhttps://twitter.com/ClosingCrawlhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/closing-crawl/id1530133296https://www.closingcrawl.com/Merch at: https://bit.ly/spacetimetm

Healthcare Goes to Hollywood

It's summer, the sun is blazing, and we only have one thing on our minds - the upcoming thirtieth anniversary of the high-octane, expertly paced thriller The Fugitive, originally released August 6, 1993 starring Harrison Ford. Oh, and Medicare for All. We're always thinking about Medicare for All. Now that we mention it, isn't it funny how if we had a single-payer healthcare system, The Fugitive wouldn't exist? In a single-payer system, there would have been no nefarious pharmaceutical executive to frame Harrison Ford for murder in order to cover up the side effects of Provasic. There would have been no need for Walter White to cook meth in order to pay for his cancer treatment. In fact, a lot of our favorite movies and TV shows would be entirely without conflict. In this episode, we take a look at a uniquely American subgenre: movies where our healthcare system is the villain! Plus, we dip into the Healthcare-NOW mailbag to hear from our listeners about your favorite movies where for-profit healthcare is the bad guy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKat9vjm7tI SPOILER ALERT. Some of these movies are masterpieces, and we'll be discussing spoilers. Seriously, we advise that you pause the podcast and watch Dog Day Afternoon now. Let's discuss the uniquely American film genre that depicts the healthcare industry as the villain. One of the biggest healthcare villain blockbusters was, of course, The Fugitive (1993). Our hero Dr. Richard Kimball is falsely accused of murdering his wife. He escapes police custody and along the way uncovers the truth, that he was framed by an evil pharmaceutical executive who killed Mrs. Kimball to cover up the side effects of a profitable new drug. Fun fact: Tommy Lee Jones was the former college roommate of Vice President Al Gore. The term “healthcare industry” dates back to the 1970s, and so does the reality of for-profit healthcare. Major transformations of our healthcare system have created real-life nightmares and impossible situations for patients, and that growing widespread experience of a healthcare dystopia then creates an audience for Hollywood script writers to build drama around healthcare situations. Two of the films submitted by our members come from the very beginning of the “healthcare industry,” in the early 1970s: The Hospital (1971) stars George C. Scott and Diana Rigg. A serial killer targets doctors by making them patients in their own hospital, where they die due to hospital negligence. CW: weird sexual politics. Dog Day Afternoon (1975) starring Al Pacino and John Cazale, dramatizes a true story of two Brooklyn bank robbers, motivated to steal to pay for gender reassignment surgery for Pacino's character's partner. In 2015, real life dad Bryan Randolph of Detroit robbed a bank to pay for his 1-year-old daughter's cancer treatment after his health insurance canceled her plan. The next explosion of healthcare plots comes in the 1990s and early 2000s, when “managed care” plans and HMOs spread like wildfire, replacing traditional insurance. Intended to bring down rising healthcare costs, managed care brought us such classics as prior authorization, widespread claim denials and limited networks. This kicked off a new wave of films in the 1990s that start using health insurance villains become key plot points. The failed Clinton health reform efforts also happened in 1994, which created probably a sense of hopelessness around Congress fixing these problems. As Good As It Gets (1997): This cringefest features Jack Nicholson as a cranky, bigoted and obsessive compulsive writer. Nicholson's character can only eat at one restaurant, where he meets waitress Helen Hunt, and pays for her child's cancer treatment so she can continue to work and serve him. All kinds of toxicity, sexism, and structural inequities on display in this one. Patch Adams (1998): features Robin Williams in a real life story about a doctor whose unorthodox ways bump up agai...

I to valg. Nå venter mange på at Trump skal ta Amerika tilbake. De ser ingen annen som er tøff og dedikert nok. De stoler bare på Trump.   Videoen er klar til å sees via Odysee, der vi nå har en egen Podcast kanal!
