"North Shore," released in 1987, is a film that encapsulates the essence of surfing culture and the timeless quest for belonging and self-discovery. Set against the stunning backdrop of Hawaii's legendary North Shore, the movie follows the journey of Rick Kane (played by Matt Adler), a young surfer from Arizona, as he navigates the challenging waves and complex social dynamics of the surfing world. The film opens in the arid deserts of Arizona, a stark contrast to the lush landscapes of Hawaii. Rick Kane, fresh from winning a local surfing contest in a wave pool, decides to use his prize money to travel to the North Shore of Oahu, the mecca of surfing. His naivety and landlocked upbringing are immediately apparent upon his arrival, making him an easy target for local surfers who view him as an outsider. One of the film's strengths lies in its portrayal of the clash between local and outsider cultures, a theme still relevant today. The tension between respecting local customs and the universal passion for surfing is a central conflict in the movie. This is exemplified in the interactions between Rick and the local surfers, particularly with the character of Vince (played by Gerry Lopez), a respected surfer who embodies the spirit and skill of the local surfing community. The cinematography of "North Shore" is another highlight, capturing the raw beauty and power of the ocean. The surfing scenes are shot with an authenticity that appeals to both surfers and non-surfers alike. These scenes are not just visually stunning; they are pivotal in advancing the narrative, showcasing Rick's progression from a naive wave pool surfer to a skilled ocean surfer. However, the film is not without its flaws. The script sometimes lapses into clichés, and the acting, particularly in the more dramatic scenes, can feel forced. The character development, especially for the supporting cast, is often surface-level, missing opportunities to delve deeper into their backstories and motivations.Despite these shortcomings, "North Shore" benefits immensely from its supporting characters. Turtle, played by John Philbin, is a standout, providing comic relief and a sense of grounded wisdom. His friendship with Rick serves as a bridge between the outsider and the local community, illustrating the universal language of surfing. Furthermore, the romantic subplot between Rick and Kiani (played by Nia Peeples) adds an extra layer to the story, although it follows a predictable trajectory. The film also touches on the commercialization of surfing, a prescient issue in the surfing community. The character of Chandler, portrayed by Gregory Harrison, embodies the soul surfer who rejects the commercial aspects of the sport. His mentorship of Rick is central to the film's message about the purity of surfing and the importance of respecting the ocean and local traditions."North Shore" culminates in the final surfing competition, a well-executed sequence that blends real surfing footage with the film's narrative. This climax not only serves as a test of Rick's skills but also as a resolution to the cultural tensions depicted throughout the movie. The competition scenes are gripping and well-choreographed, keeping viewers engaged until the very end.In terms of cultural impact, "North Shore" has become a cult classic among surfers. It captures a particular moment in surfing history, just before the sport exploded into mainstream consciousness. The film's depiction of surfing culture, with its emphasis on respect, skill, and connection to nature, resonates with many in the surfing community. In conclusion, "North Shore" is a film that, despite its flaws, remains an important cultural artifact within the surfing world. Its depiction of the surfing lifestyle, combined with the beautiful cinematography and engaging surfing sequences, makes it a must-watch for enthusiasts of the sport. While it may not delve deeply into character development or avoid certain clichés, its core message about respect, passion, and self-discovery transcends these limitations, making it a memorable and influential film in the genre of sports cinema. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

We're going off the deep end Swellians and who better to take us into the underworld of demons, drug addiction, jail cells, and redemption stories than Ain't That Swell's very own CORE SHAMAN, former Pipe Master and world number six, Robbie Page. A veteran of the Bellambi housing commission and a survivor of more horse shit than you can poke a pitchfork at, Paigey takes us on a spellbinding journey through Tour life, drugs, depression and redemption. He's got his old mate, the Dunghutti Demon Destroyer and fellow Bellambi House product, Eddie Moran along for the ride. Eddie might also be the greatest Indigenous surfer you've never heard of…every bit as good as Paigey in his prime, Eddie was to chase the tour with his mate until he found out it was illegal as a First Australian to get a passport. All of which is a precursor to our unofficial eulogy for the great hi-fi Hawaiian exponent turned Scum Valley's Finest himself, John Shimooka. Rest In Peace, John. Much love to you and your family. Much love to the Swellians. Take care of yourselves and each other. Hmad. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is a pissed off Robbie Page. I feel like I’m living in The Handmaid’s Tale with everything going on! Am I the only one feeling this way?! What has happened to the land that I love?! What has happened to the beautiful America that I love?! What has happened to FREEDOM?! What has happened to treating people with respect and kindness?! We now live in a country where airlines are kicking off mothers with their children because their toddlers won’t wear a mask! WHAT IN THE WORLD? Why? For what reason?! Is it really because a two year old could carry a virus or because of a feardemic?! I’m beyond DONE! I want the country I know and love back. So I’m warning you this podcast episode is a very real, raw, and unedited Robbie. And NO, I will not apologize for being deeply patriotic or caring deeply for people! I hope you’re awake and seeing what’s going on, because I am. It’s like living in an episode of The Handmaid’s Tale. Welcome to a totalitarian society.

Robbie Page takes us on his journey from playing professional volleyball to founding Tenzo Tea, a matcha green tea company, specializing in organic and ceremonial matcha from Japan. Page takes us back to the beginning, explaining how he and co-founder Steve O'Dell came up with the idea for a matcha green tea company (3:25), which all started when they were playing collegiate volleyball together at the University of California, Los Angeles--an experience that assisted them in entrepreneurialism (10:26). Page then dives into everything there is to know about matcha green tea (13:02), including its lack of popularity when they first started the company in 2016 (14:35). He recalls bootstrapping their way through the first year of starting the company (20:38) and how they ultimately got the product into coffee shops in southern California (27:02). He talks about Tenzo's go-to-market strategies, including e-commerce (32:07), and its current mix of revenue between direct-to-consumer and wholesale distribution (40:37). Page concludes with his vision for the future and whether he sees Tenzo taking a step outside of matcha (44:30). Stay tuned for all of that and more! You don’t want to miss a minute of this engaging episode featuring Steve and Robbie! Have you ever performed at the top of your field? What was that experience like? How did you get to that level of competition? For many business leaders, getting to the top is a frustrating and winding road, then there are those who make it look really easy. Steve and Robbie are accustomed to performing in high stakes situations. Both Steve and Robbie played volleyball in college at UCLA, competing at the highest levels. They’ve taken that same dedication and competition to their roles co-founding and leading, Tenzo Tea. What can you learn from Steve and Robbie’s story? Do you have a system that sets you up for success? How has your system changed and evolved over the years in your career and personal life? Coming from a sports background, Steve and Robbie had ritual and routine built into their days from an early age. Now, instead of turning all that planning and preparation to get their body in shape, they are working on getting the competitive edge over their peers. While the guys will be the first to tell you that Tenzo Tea will help you start the day off right, they also do what they can to learn from other leaders, devouring books on leadership and innovation. Did you know that fueling your body with the right ingredients is half the battle when it comes to maintaining high performance? It’s true! Too often the average person will get into a health kick and decide to start working out (which is great!) but they’ll fail to go, “All in” and change their diet. Steve and Robbie want to help men and women start the day off right by putting a clean and natural source of nutrients in the form of a hot cup of matcha green tea. At Tenzo Tea, they say that Matcha green tea is the healthiest drink on the planet, described as a fat-burner and cancer-fighter, Matcha dominates the rest of the world of tea. One of the best ways to stand out from the rest of the competition in the business world is to build a robust and enthusiastic fan base. Its true, some products lend themselves to this business practice better than others, however, many companies are leaving money on the floor by taking a passive approach to customer engagement. Tenzo Tea is taking a much more direct and aggressive approach to cultivating and encouraging their fans to stay connected. They’ve gone so far as creating specialized subscription services, starter boxes, and even an informative blog! Steve and Robbie are really doing an amazing job connecting with their customer base in a meaningful way and the market is rewarding them for it! Robbie Page is the Co-Founder of Tenzo Tea. While on the hunt for a coffee alternative that had health benefits, he and his best friend Steve O'Dell came across a clean, green, caffeine packed plant called Matcha. Realizing how much it helped them stay focused in their daily lives along with the other 20 or so health benefits, they launched Tenzo Tea with Matcha being the key ingredient. What started as solely an E-Commerce product in July of 2016 has evolved into over 160+ physical locations that continues to grow today. Born and raised in the small town of Victor, New York, Robbie was surrounded by parents who both happen to be doctors along with a brother and sister. Realizing his passion for volleyball at a young age he committed his childhood to becoming the best athlete he could be despite the kids around him stereotyping him for being unathletic and goofy because of his height. By his junior year he was fully committed to UCLA as their #1 Volleyball recruit for the 2010 season standing 7 feet tall. After finishing up school and playing professional Indoor Volleyball in the European circuit for an Italian team, he returned back to the U.S. and the lifestyle he was comfortable with in Southern California. Back in the professional beach leagues he would find himself playing volleyball during the day and working on Tenzo Tea by night to get it off the ground and running. What started as two of them in their apartment has evolved into a team of people based in Santa Monica, CA. In this episode Robbie discusses how volleyball taught him if you work hard consistently at anything you’re bound to get better, you have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, the through of sorrow is about continuing to move forward regardless of how things are going, having an amazing team is key to growth, not reaching his full potential is what scares him the most and why feedback is the breakfast of champions. - You can follow Robbie here: Instagram: @Robbie_Page  You can follow Tenzo Tea here: Instagram: @TenzoTea  Website: TenzoTea.co   Follow Bobbbaaaay on social media: Instagram: @Bobbbaaaay Twitter: @Bobbbaaaay Subscribe to our YouTube Channel for new interviews (and more) Follow us on Spotify Follow us on Soundcloud Subscribe to iTunes Follow us on Instagram: @PurposeintheYouth
