“I think we get so far away from trusting ourselves. And, you know, when you do a breathwork session, or you go for a run, or you're in the shower, you have a download, and you're like, yeah, that's the fucking thing! And then an hour goes by, and then you convince yourself out of that thing, and you do a lesser thing… “I'm gonna reach out to Lewis Howes and get him on my podcast. Like that's too audacious. I'm going to go 20 people below him.” It's like, no fucking do the thing. You know, trust yourself!” Episode #189 of The Hope Initiative with Matt Allyn We're finally back for 2024 and I've been sitting on this epic conversation with Matt Allyn for a short while now. Stoked to have had it. We discuss storytelling, creativity, how Matt shifted his life after riding across America, and so much more! Thank you for your kind words and patience, my friend. “I've just got this belief that if I can keep going at the rate that I'm going every single day and I keep working at the capacity that I'm working every single day, it has to work. “If not you, who?” Which is a really interesting quote that someone told me. It's like, if not you, who? Okay, I'm just prefacing this, I don't really care to win any awards. I just want to be the best in my industry. And this is just a metaphor, but if it's not you standing up there getting an award for something you've done, or having someone come up to you and say, hey, you really inspire them, if it's not you up there, who else is it gonna be? And there's no reason why it couldn't be you.” Episode #186 of The Hope Initiative with Matthew Thomas Matthew Thomas is an incredible artist in the world of visual story telling, whether it be through photography or videography. And then she got on one day and she started again and I said, “You go to church every Sunday?” She said yes. I said, “Well that's really good, I'm glad and I'm happy for you to go, but I don't need to go to a church.” She said, “What do you mean?” I said, “A church is made by man. Look at all around you. This is God's Cathedral. The trees, the sky, everything that you look at is God's creation. Why would I need to go into a man made creation for it?” And she must have thought about it when she got on the bus the next time. She apologised to me for being rude to me and said, “You're right.” It's just not making her wrong, but making people look outside the square. Making people realise that there's a lot more going on.” Episode #174 of The Hope Initiative with Stewart Heggie Born in the UK in 1946, Stewart Heggie moved to Australia in his mid 20's seeking a better life and found that driving buses, communicating with his passengers and following his curiosity. There's this dynamic of like, it's more welcoming, it's more interesting, you connect on a deeper layer, and it was fascinating, like, yeah, I'm still in shock that you brought it up, it's epic.” Episode #168 of The Hope Initiative with Chad Cohen. And I genuinely feel as humans, we have this duty to serve… I wasn't doing anything for other people. And now it's the complete opposite. I was making barely any money, just to survive, but that ability to run those ab sessions, those breathwork sessions, those community events and realising that people outside of that meeting up together, building friendships, that's priceless.” Episode # of The Hope Initiative with Darshan Lad. And she said, when you get to the point where you are always thinking about it, she said, that's probably when you know that's how much you want to do it. There's that. And then another mate of mine, Alan, who I did Project Malta with, he said, ‘One thing he said to me once, just in passing, and he said, you know, a photographer is only as good as the work they do. And he said, ‘The more you shoot, the better you get at what you do. And that's like, the more you do a podcast, the better you get at interviewing… And they're two conversations I remember years apart and at different stages, those conversations were very good full stops to think and to sort of stand back and say to myself, ‘Why am I doing what I'm doing?' And I think without knowing it, they became the motivation to keep doing what I do, because they made me have to stop and think about how much of this is consuming you. How much of it is leading you to whatever it is.” Episode #150 of The Hope Initiative with Mark Avellino. Mark is a photographer, creative human and football fan from way back. With Maltese roots, it was only following the passing of his parents that led him to photographing what connected us, The World Game. An avid documenter of the game at Victorias top level, Mark has plenty of insight into creativity, dealing with imposter syndrome, mindfulness and dealing with the voice that tries to stop us all. Thanks to Mark for going deep and sharing! I hope you all enjoy. “It's insane. That noise in us, sometimes the world is so dark and we get so stuck in our pity, but it really just taught me that little flame is in there somewhere and it's just waiting to be ignited and for us to put aside our conditioning and lean into that flame. I think that actually making that conscious decision, like how deeply I meant that and just poured gasoline on it. And it was like today. Now. Not tomorrow. This is your life. It literally was like I was gonna die if I didn't do this… That was ‘Rock bottom had a basement…' Episode #147 of The Hope Initiative with Simi Gosling. “So from that moment, I really developed a sense of believing and trusting in my knowing, which is really the only compass I've got to work from. It's not out there, it's inside. One time I was working on this artwork, and I had my beautiful classical music on and a glass of wine, and I was right into the zone and my dad spoke to me. So again, not words, just a felt experience, but the thought and the knowing that he was saying this and he was going, “that's your joy.” And I had a cry. So tapping into my knowing, and the more I pay attention to it, going into the park, I just stand there and a tree will pop out at me, literally pop, and I go, “wow,” didn't notice you before. I have a bit of a conversation with it and go over to it and just be there.”Episode #137 of The Hope Initiative with Rosemary Stanway.Rosemary Stanway is a woman with a huge heart and many talents. After meeting at a market one wintery Sunday afternoon where she was shoeless and earthing, I knew she'd make for a great guest. “I feel like I've changed some of those defaults, and so now it strikes me more when I have an upset moment. I'm like, oh man, what's going on? Why am I frustrated by this? Whereas it used to be the other way. It was like, okay, now how do I find gratitude at this moment? How do I be joyful? How do I be present? I had to kind of force it, but I feel like now that's the default. That just is, and now the rule versus the exception right now, those are, that's the rule and the exception is like, man, why am I grumpy right now? Why am I being mean with the kids? What's going on? Do I just need to take a minute? Do I need to? Those are the more infrequent moments now.”Episode #136 of The Hope Initiative with Alex Barrera.Alex Barrera is a husband, father of 3, YouTuber and Podcaster who is transforming his life with grace one day at a time. “It's about getting started. It's not about working on perfect, because I think that's what gets in so many people's way. It's like they're gonna put something off until things are… it's taking the step and it's getting better as you go along. And one of the things I like is that doable changes, right? So what you can do today is completely different than what you can do six months from now. But just getting started in that process can kind of unlock what's possible for you.And it's like, especially with the kind of food and the movement piece, it's like as somebody starts to feel better, then they're more invested in, ‘I want to keep doing this. I want to expand what it is that I'm doing.' They go from starting to eating better and it's like, ‘Hey, I'm feeling better now'.”Episode #135 of The Hope Initiative with Jim Brown.Jim Brown is a 67 year old health coach with a doable approaching to kicking Father Time's ass. “I'm so passionate about telling people, you are not your trauma. You are not this identity that you've chosen to believe. For me, my social anxiety. These labels that you think that you are, or these personality traits, unless you choose to believe that you are. Which is why I'm like, you can truly change your beliefs and you can change the persona that you are portraying to the world. You can change anything about yourself if you simply have the awareness over what it is that you wanna be.”Episode #134 of The Hope Initiative with Katie Horton.A supremely fun and serendipitous conversation with Katie Horton. After connecting on Instagram and having a fun interaction involving a Lamborghini, we had this 2 hour conversation that goes deep into a few topics including learning more about yourself, finding the answers within, how she used Bumble to find her best friend, as well as journalling, intention setting and so much more!It was an incredibly fun chat and I am grateful to Katie for her energy and thoughts on all we've shared. “My perception was that Australian people, like if you are born in Australia and like your parents are from Australia, you were slightly richer. And I felt like I could recognise that we didn't have certain things like money wise, but I didn't feel like we were necessarily poor, but I felt like we were definitely a bit under that… Cause just little like small things, you see people celebrating Christmas or birthdays, they have these parties and they get presents and all these things that we didn't really have. It's partly cultural cause Cambodians don't really celebrate birthdays. But when we were kids they knew that we wanted to celebrate birthdays and we couldn't afford as much, we didn't really go on too many holidays either. So that played a part in terms of, you kind of not rank yourself, but you see, you compare the others and you go to the houses, you feel like, okay, they're kind of rich, maybe we feel less rich. Later on, I completely realised that we were rich in our own ways, cuz we've always had great food, anything we really needed…”Episode #133 of The Hope Initiative with Andrew Duong.A fun and wide ranging conversation with former teammate, artist and breakdancer, Andrew Duong. It's always fun catching up with people I knew from 10+ years ago and seeing how their life has evolved in ways I could never of imagined. This conversation with Andrew is a perfect example of that. From a humble upbringing in Vermont, to creating his own creative hub and all the hats in between, this was a fun conversation that I feel serves to prove that no matter what happens, if you keep creating you'll build a life you're proud to live each and every day. I think if I just dialled it to down to that, growing up, we're put in this bucket of go to school, pick the one sport, pick the degree that gives you the highest probability of reaching success.
