Today, I have the privilege of reconnecting with my friend Robb Wolf, who joined me on two previous podcasts, episodes 130 and 213. He is a former research biochemist and the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Paleo Solution and Wired to Eat.  In our conversation today, we explore the neuro-regulation of appetite and satiety, diet debates, and the impact of ultra-processed foods. Robb shares the intriguing story behind Dorito Roulette, and we dive into the roles of novelty, palate fatigue, protein, sarcopenia, digestion, and reduced anabolic signaling. We also examine the broader implications of nutrition, autoimmunity, gut health, thermoregulation, and sparkling versus still water, and Robb discusses various ideas he has reconsidered in the last few years.  Stay tuned for today's invaluable and thought-provoking conversation with Robb Wolf. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: What is neuro-regulation? How the varied flavors of Dorito Roulette tie into our desire to avoid palate fatigue How the processed food industry tends to understand satiety better than health professionals Why do we need more protein as we age? How hormonal changes, decreased anabolic signaling, and a sedentary lifestyle contribute to muscle mass loss and fat gain in older adults Why moderation is essential when consuming seed oils or processed foods Why Robb advocates for making incremental changes in diet and lifestyle rather than drastic changes  Why vitamin D production is essential for preventing autoimmune conditions, and the benefits of using vitamin D lamps during periods of low sunlight The importance of sodium for athletic performance and recovery Why sparkling water may be better for hydration than still water Connect with Cynthia Thurlow   Follow on Twitter, Instagram & LinkedIn Check out Cynthia's website Submit your questions to support@cynthiathurlow.com Connect with Robb Wolf On his website The Healthy Rebellion Radio Podcast On X and Instagram  Previous Episodes Mentioned Ep. 130 – The Paleolithic Way of Eating: Optimum Nutrition for Optimum Health with Robb Wolf Ep. 213 All About Electrolytes: Symptoms, Causes, and Solutions for Electrolyte Imbalance with Robb Wolf

He is a New York Times Best Selling author having written several books including Wired to Eat, The Paleo Solution and Sacred Cow (which he co-authored with Diana Rodgers.) In this episode we discuss the oft repeated claims that eating meat is bad; not only ethically, but for our health, and especially for the environment. A very vast topic, we do our best to touch on the specifics of several claims about eating meat causing cancer, how much water and land raising cattle uses, and the greenhouse gasses emitted by ruminants. In the episode, Robb mentions a breakdown he did of various claims that ended up in popular vegan documentaries like “What the Health,” and that breakdown is here.

BMR is 1,542 (based on a calculator I found using the google machine). 199 pounds. On September 1, I started the 30 Day Reset. During July and August, I was more conscious about what I was eating and lost 18 pounds. While doing that, I read Wired to Eat and decided to use September for the 30 Day Reset. Today is September 4, so this is just my 4th day on the reset. Yesterday morning I woke up hungry (which is abnormal for me), but I waited about two hours before I ate breakfast because that's what I'm used to. After getting my day started, I wasn't feeling hungry anymore so it wasn't a big deal to wait to eat breakfast. I typically wake up, I lift for about 30 minutes, some days I take a walk for 1-2 miles, then shower and eat breakfast. I don't normally feel hungry until a couple hours after waking up. Aside from waking up hungry, yesterday and today I have had almost no appetite. Because I lift, I feel like I should be getting a good amount of protein in my diet. Typically I would be eating 25-35g of protein per meal. I had a packet of salmon and some green beans for lunch today, and I basically forced myself to finish so I could get the protein I feel like my body needs. While I'm not trying to make any hardcore gains during the 30 Day Reset, I don't want to lose any muscle mass while I go through this. It just seems like yesterday and today, after I take a few bites of my meal, I'm no longer hungry. So, my questions: Is this loss of appetite normal or should I be concerned that I'm not eating enough? For the past three days, I've been eating 850 - 1,100 calories. Should I eat more even if I have to force myself because I'm not hungry? Thank you!   DIM Supplement Causing Sudden Decrease in HDL Susan writes:  Hi Robb and Nicki, Longtime listener... maybe since 2009 ~~ Paleo Solution w' Robb and Greg. Good stuff. As a spry 20 year old in about 2000, I started the Atkin's diet and transitioned to clean eating around 2008. My total cholesterol has always been ~200 and split 50/50 - HDL/ LDL. I've had it tested dozens of times over the years. I've been the same weight since my teen years immediately went back to that weight post pregnancy. My body fat by hydrostatic testing has ranged from 17% - 21% throughout my adult life, with it being more near 17% in my later adult life (more self control about calories I think). I lift weights with intensity 6-7 days per week and keep my calories between 1600-1900 per day. Daily Supplements: Magnesium Vitamin D Cheap little multi Fish Oil DIM I am now 44. I just got my fasting bloodwork done, and my HDL has dropped from 100-110 to 77. My LDL has gone from 100 to 149. Two things have changed in my lifestyle: The addition of the DIM supplement last summer. Before taking DIM, I had horrible perimenopause symptoms. I was waking up in the middle of the night so drenched in sweat that I would need to take a shower. If I wasn't drenched, I was nervous, stressing, mind-spinning and not sleeping. 100% of my symptoms are gone since starting 300mg of DIM before bed.   Simply in an effort to keep calories under control, I've entirely cut nuts out of my diet (I used to eat tons), and I eat a lot less red meat than I used to. I also have started to sometimes eat fake foods, like protein bars, which I never would have previously touched. I've been feeling pretty good, crushing it at the gym, staying lean and mentally pretty clear. So, I was excited to get my bloodwork back. Low-and-behold my LDL is up and HDL is way down. It hasn't been below 100 in the last 20 years. So, I consider this a sudden drop. Also, my kidney function is looking pretty mediocre. eGFR = 81 (sodium and potassium are off too) In any case, my family tends to drop dead like flies at a pretty early age due to cardiovascular disease (skinny little Irish smokers). So, this sudden fluctuation in cholesterol is pretty scary to me. Dr. Google says that taking progestins may cause HDL to drop. Dr. Google also says that DIM causes an increase in progesterone. My question is.... Do you theorize a tie between the DIM supplement and my sudden drop in precious HDL? As a very active person with a 90% clean diet, should I care? The other 10% is protein bars and Chardonnay. There is very little to be said about the long term affects of DIM out there on the interwebs. So, I'm interested to hear your thoughts on it. Thanks! Susan   Vasectomy Research Trevor writes:  Hello, my question harkens back to THRR episode 063. A question was asked about getting a vasectomy. Robb, you referenced someone you know who found research that indicated negative hormonal consequences (less testosterone) following vasectomy. I find myself in the same situation now as a 44 year old over-fat dude considering vasectomy for birth control. My wife has used hormonal birth control methods during our marriage. Now her functional medicine Doctor is encouraging her to cease her hormonal intervention to work on some health concerns. Before I run my business into a scalpel, I'd like to know the potential hormonal risks I'm facing. I've done my amateur keyword searches on jama.org and pubmed, but I can't seem to find the research you mentioned in that episode. The conventional health articles say lower testosterone is not a risk. Can you help me find the research you mentioned? Or some tips on “how to fish” and do better research on my own? Long time listener and strong endorser of the work y'all are doing. I wish more people and healthcare providers were on the same page, or hell even in the same book as this community! ANYWAY....I recently got my labs done and I have some concerns on the results I received. For context: I am a 30 y/o female, no kids, work out 3-4 x week (mostly weight training and average 8-10K steps per day) I work as a nurse, tend to focus my meals around 30g or more of protein (red meat, chicken, dairy, eggs, I eat it all), and drink plenty of water and LMNT :), avoid seed oils and other ultra processed garbage. I went through some hormone issues for 5-7 years (i.e very infrequent cycle due to too much exercising and under fueling). Since then, I have become so much more educated and I have recovered my cycle *naturally*; gaining probably 30-40 ish pounds from my low; currently sitting at 155 5'6. I feel great, but these lab results got me shook! Any and all advice welcome. Total Cholesterol- 282 Triglycerides- 43 Non HDL- 169 HDL- 113 ApoA to ApoB- 0.41 ApoB- 113 Liver enzymes AST and ALT- slightly elevated Total T3 - 68 all other thyroid values "normal" Fasting BGL- 95 A1C- 5.0 Am I destined for an early death related to heart disease?? I've listened to Huberman on blood glucose control and will implement his ideas to lower my fasting number, but it's hard to eat my last meal 2-3 hours before bed on days I work since I get home at 8. I hope this isn't too long of question, feel free to cut out anything you'd rather not discuss and just give general guidelines. THANK YOU!!! Stay salty, Olivia   ApoB confusion Marit writes: Hi Robb and Nicki, I've been listening to your podcast and following your work for many years and I've thrown some similar hard questions at you, which you were kind enough to try to answer (thanks!). I'm so frustrated that I can't understand statistics enough to draw my own conclusion based on the literature on ApoB and statins. I listened to a Peter Attia's podcast and he said (I heard it twice to confirm) that if ApoB were low in the population he "thinks" AS CVD would be dramatically reduced. His pushes alot for statin use. On the flip side, reading the breakdown of studies on statins on Chris Kresser's website, I just can't understand why Peter Attia takes this stance. It doesn't add up! My gut feeling is risk for any chronic disease is never calculated on just one lab value (that's just logical). but even if it was, why does Attia use statins when they don't seem to reduce deaths, strokes or heart attacks by very much, in people without CVD? Don't statins obliterate ApoB? You're the absolute best if you answer this question for me. I'd be forever greatful! Thanks guys for all the work you do. It's appreciated!   Cholesterol and Diet Jay writes: Hi Robb and Nicki, One of your original six listeners here. (Can't be wrong!) Thanks for all the good work. Recent bloodwork revealed high cholesterol and LDL numbers (216 and 123, respectively), as well as non-HDL cholesterol (137) and apolipoprotein B (94). (HDL is 79 and triglycerides are 50.) For what it's worth, my glucose is in the normal range, though slightly high considering my otherwise overall health, activity level, and diet. My functional med practitioner has suggested the "Cardiometabolic Food Plan." (for reference: https://www.allinahealth.org/-/media/allina-health/files/business-units/penny-george-institute-of-health-and-healing/2_ifm_cardiometabolicfoodplan_comprehensiveguide.pdf) I'm reticent, considering the plan's emphasis on soy protein, legumes generally, grains, and limiting saturated fat. I could modify it to eliminate those things, but then I'm back to basically what I do already.  Quick background: male, 38, active (commute on a bike, strength train, chase kids), small business owner with two young kids (i.e., non-zero amount of stress, less-than-perfect sleep). I have a pretty good gluten intolerance (which is how I found your work right around when you published The Paleo Solution — thanks again!) and generally follow a paleo-primal-ish template, with some full-fat dairy and rice/corn, occasionally, mostly to coexist with my family without being a *complete* pain in the ass. So: Would those lab numbers concern you? What do you think about the Cardiometabolic Food Plan, specifically? And generally, what would you suggest for diet or any other interventions to right the ship? I've been a listener since day one. The Paleo Solution was a real eye opener in regard to noticeably feeling different after eating “clean”. I'm turning 40 next year and thought it would be a good idea to get a snap shot of where my Hormone levels are. I like to think I do a good job of being cognizant of eating well, sleeping, and training. My recent hormone bloodwork: LH 4.2 FSH 2.9 Testosterone 724 Prolactin 24.5 Need I be alarmed about my prolactin? From what I understand it can indicate a serious problem or just be due to endurance training. Over the past 2 years I've been running a lot. I trained for and completed a 50 mile Ultra Marathon and a Marathon. As of late I am lifting (squats 2x a week deads 1x a week). My running mileage is low comparatively to a few months ago. Some pull ups and push ups every day. Besides just being fatigued from training at times I feel and think I perform pretty well. All though I don't notice it work is a stressor and I'm certain that the shift work I do isn't helpful. I plan to follow up about my blood work. Should I be asking for a thyroid blood work? Is it dumb to just attribute the high prolactin to endurance training and low carb eating?   Omega 3's Amy writes: To omega or not to omega? That is the question. Kresser is going to try & sell me some tomorrow. Barry Sears says they're the answer to whatever ails you. But Masterjohn says they're basically poison, and we need more arachadonic acid, in fact. In the last podcast of yours I heard, you mentioned them briefly. What are you doing about them lately? (Feel free to use this for a podcast question if you like :) )   Alternatives to Phenibut for Mood/Well Being (if necessary) Matt says: I currently average 1 gram of phenibut a day to lift my mood & prevent anxiety and have played with periods of abstaining for 1+ months. I find only a little withdrawal symptoms so its not untenable however my baseline mood is not nearly as social and happy as I am with the small to moderate phenibut usage. My question to you both is do you see a problem with it as most of the "research" out there is N=1 examples of people abusing and experience rebound anxiety. Are there other anxiolytics like ashwaganda? others? I should try and what are good sources as I am reluctant to grab off a random amazon wholesaler. For context my sleep is dialed in at 7-8 hrs per night, daily 10 min meditation, yoga and fitness, and eat a paleo (+rice) diet.   Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT. I feel absolutely amazing and have ultimate health. I recently heard a podcast with a guest saying that Red meat is dangerous. I usually roll my eyes and ignore these statements but for some reason I listened and wanted to get your take on what he said. He said red meat ages people and causes inflammation. His reasons were because saturated fat along with carnatine, lethathin, and choline (I may have mispronounced those - sorry) change our gene function of bacteria and this causes inflammation. Thoughts? I do not plan on changing my red meat diet by the way.   Too much cardio? Lil writes: Hello! I have written in a few times. Thank you so much for your knowledge and your willingness to help. 2 unrelated questions: 1) could a trend in increasing resting heart rate be related to overdoing cardio? I am a chronic over-exerciser. I feel emotionally better when I hit cardio in addition to weights. I know the sciences says too much cardio is a stressor AND my personal experience is that I feel anxious without serious cardio. If you think cardio is contributing to a  higher heart rate, how do you suggest weening off overtraining with minimal negative side effects? 2) In addition to correcting daily posture while using devices and such do you have any specific exercises that can cure or lessen "tech neck" or the start or a dowager's hump? Thank you!!   Fruit and non alcoholic fatty liver disease Andy writes:  Robb and Nicki, Thank you! Thank you for persisting in fighting the good fight! What you say and how you say it both are vital now more than ever. The coconut farm can wait. The world needs you. Haha. I read Paleo Solution back in 2010 ish and caught the podcast probably on episode 2 or 3 and haven't missed one since. Being a chiro and a strength coach, I've shared your rational and sound advice (and book) with hundreds of people over the years. Thank you for helping me help the people around me. Could not have done it without you. Question: in the past I've avoided fruit due to the fructose and its potential for liver problems, namely non-alcoholic fatty liver disease due to the fructose content. Recently though, I just can't seem to convince myself it's a problem given that, humans have eaten fruit for… well, probably ever. We must be tripping over our own mechanistic shortsightedness, no? For the past 16 months, my diet has consisted of mainly meat, fruit, egg yolks, butter, and liver and I've never felt better. Can fruit really cause NAFLD and, thus, should it be avoided? Thanks for all you do and like a previous listener said, an abundance of health, laughs, and sunshine to you and your family. -Andy, listener number 6. P.S.- Any thoughts on the enzymes in fruit and whether or not you think they might aid in digestion of meat in particular? P.S.S.- LMNT is amazing! Cheers! “It's about getting started. It's not about working on perfect, because I think that's what gets in so many people's way. It's like they're gonna put something off until things are… it's taking the step and it's getting better as you go along. And one of the things I like is that doable changes, right? So what you can do today is completely different than what you can do six months from now. But just getting started in that process can kind of unlock what's possible for you.And it's like, especially with the kind of food and the movement piece, it's like as somebody starts to feel better, then they're more invested in, ‘I want to keep doing this. I want to expand what it is that I'm doing.' They go from starting to eating better and it's like, ‘Hey, I'm feeling better now'.”Episode #135 of The Hope Initiative with Jim Brown.Jim Brown is a 67 year old health coach with a doable approaching to kicking Father Time's ass. I've had a couple bouts of prostatitis over the past few 4-5 years. Symptoms usually linger for 2-3 weeks and with antibiotics and supportive care they generally get better. Things flair up about 1-2 times a year. I've been to a urologist and had a CT scan and they are not worried about cancer (PSA is also normal). They say some guys just have 'chronic prostatitis'. If you read online, one of the main recommendations is to avoid excessive red meat, alcohol and caffeine. I was curious to your thoughts about the red meat claim (and the caffeine). Is there a legit concern here or is this another propaganda push that red meat is the root of all evil? Personally, I'm try to focus on reducing other sources of inflammation such as limiting Omega- 6 intake, limiting alcohol, etc. I do eat meat based and paleo'ish. I have 3 sons, so the diet is not always perfect. I do CrossFit 3-4 x a week and I would say I'm moderately fit for being 45. Although I still could lose about 10-15lbs of fat. Sleep is good. Oh, I'm also on testosterone injections twice a week so I get my PSA checked regularly. My levels are well with normal physiologic parameters. Thanks for all that you do! David   Feed a cold, starve a fever David writes: Rob and Nikki, I'm a long time listener, first time caller. I read "The Paleo Solution" many years ago and became an instant fan. The book really helped me make some huge changes in my health. Many thanks for all you do. Often clichés are worth nothing, but sometimes they contain a grain of truth, or else they wouldn't have become a part of our mythology. "Feed a cold, starve a fever" is one I've wondered about, especially recently. Or, more specifically, are there general eating patterns that are better when someone has a viral or bacterial infection? I've had COVID 3 times, and each time it was an absolute nothing-burger. I intermittent-fasted through much of the day, stuck to low carb, got lots of sun and sauna, and never missed an exercise day. I bounced back with minimal symptoms. I thought I had the key Then, about 3 weeks ago, I picked up some kind of virus (2 negative covid tests) and got HAMMERED. The sickest I've ever been in my life, truly. Many of the COVID symptoms, but magnified times 10. I stuck to my COVID regimen, but got no relief. One thing I noticed is that I craved carbs. Bread, ice cream, rice (but not chocolate, my favorite treat!) Meanwhile, while sticking to my normal low-carb diet, my fasting blood sugar each morning was 20-30 points higher (stress?) Bottom line after this meandering: do you think there is an advantage to fasting, and or low carb/keto, or does one follow the cravings when one sick? I think I'm giving you too much information. :) I hope I don't disqualify myself over the length and also THANK YOU in advance for your help! Hi Robb + Nikki, I have been bingeing your podcast lately and as it turns out, I have a question (actually more than 1) for you. I am going to be 46 in June. I have worked over 25 years in restaurant kitchens, so a lot of physical work + standing on my feet all day. My husband and I reside on Cape Cod which is hot and swampy in the summer, therefore the kitchen environment is hot and swampy and depleting in every way. At age 34/35 I began going into perimenopause, and I have officially been in menopause since June 2022, at age 45. I tried for years to get my period back. I had been vegetarian/sometimes vegan for about 6 years and then I switched to Paleo intermittently for a few years. Plus Acupuncture, TCM, Plant Paradox, Medical Medium, dozens of Whole 30's, etc. I've tried it all, though none for more than a month or two. The past few years have found me 60 + pounds overweight (I am 5 3 1/4 and currently weigh 188-190.), sore, stiff, weak, with thinning hair, lack of mobility, and feeling depressed. I have sleep apnea and am going on one year with my magical C Pap machine though lately that has seemed to level off and I am waking up tired again. I had bloodwork done on January 31 that revealed high cholesterol and stagnant liver function, with glucose on the high level of normal which my doctor seemed to think was fine, 93/99. (TC 206; HDL 41; Trig 83; LDL 146; liver: AST 40; ALT 80). Also higher blood pressure than I've ever had, 138/80. Usually doctors exclaim over how great my blood pressure is! Determined to get my health and vitality back on track I re read your two books, Robb, (Wired to Eat and The Paleo Solution.) I decided to dive back into Paleo but cut out all carbs, and I had already been booze free since December. I started IF most days, started lifting weights a bit, but still avoiding cardio which I DESPISE When I increase the animal protein though, I tend to stop pooing regularly. I was vegetarian for a few years and had no problem moving things out but I feel that is what precipitated my descent into metabolic haywire. I have been supplementing lately with magnesium, minerals, Vitamin DAKE from Dave Asprey, some TCM herbs for liver support, and I've been on the lookout for a good digestive enzyme. I had given up coffee for nearly a year because it was making me hot and anxious, and I thought it was a factor in my hair shed, but lately I started mixing a little coffee back in to my Rasa along with collagen, which I just started using again. I started eating a lot of full fat cottage cheese for more protein, the only dairy that doesn't seem to make me phlegmy. Then the past few weeks, some wine here and there. I got my second round of bloodwork done on April 4 and my cholesterol went UP, though my liver improved. (TC 246; HDL 49; Trig 85; LDL 178; liver: AST 30; ALT 39). She didn't test my glucose again. I do have heart disease and high cholesterol in my family. Did my cholesterol go up from wine, even though my liver improved? Cottage cheese? Not really exercising? All of the above? After I read your books again I asked my doctor to authorize tests for my A1C, LDL-P, and CRP but she refused. Something about coding for insurance and blah blah blah. I see her again at the end of this month and I am hoping she will agree to the other tests after seeing my cholesterol jump. I have always been a giant ball of stress and nerves (don't ask me why I chose the worst possible career for that). I know I need to meditate and breathe better, and sometimes I do. I used to be stronger and fitter. My other issue is I tend to reject routine after a while. I have a terrible, terrible sweet tooth as well. I am my own worst enemy! My weight has yo-yoed constantly over my life, but this is the heaviest I've ever been. I gained 10+ pounds last spring, then jumped another 10 pounds between September and December. (In 2008 I was 130, right before going veggie.) A lot of my dilemmas ramp up next week as I return to work full time:  I work from 1-2 pm to 10-11 pm 5-6 days a week. Eating on the job is a no-no, although we all graze on the down low. I could take a break, in theory, but simply don't have time. Most shifts I don't have time to drink out of my water container right in front of me (I bring a gallon of water with 2-3 LMNT packs in it to work.) An average shift leaves me hot, sore, sticky, thirsty, and anxious. So in terms of IF and exercise: If I wake at, say, 9 am (and feel like absolute road kill, btw, and both feet are on fire from pinky toe bunions) and need to be clocked in at work by 1:30 or 2, that leaves me 4.5 hours to get all my meals in, exercise, AND spend time on soul fulfilling hobbies. I try very hard to not eat or have a drink when I get home from work, but sometimes I'm ravenous. (Or am I just dehydrated and anxious? They kind of feel the same.) And then as we slide into the busy summer season I'm having a drink every night… What, when, how much do I eat during the day? If I am going to eat after work, what type of macro situation should I have? I've thought about bringing meat sticks or homemade collagen gummies in to work, but then I'm snarfing them in the corner between tickets and I am most definitely NOT in a parasympathetic state, so in that case is it better to just be hungry?? Also the siren song of the bowl of salty french fries beckons all night, which we all pick out of. I feel like HIIT 3-4 days a week, heavier weights and less reps, with maybe a yoga class or two or three mixed in is what I need (although I need to actually DO it) but my husband thinks I need to jog for an hour 5 days a week and lift lighter weights with more reps. He says I need to do so much cardio that I puke. I'm not liking the sound of that. Is there a happy medium somewhere or am I just a whiny baby? I keep hearing you mention “zones” for cardio and I'm not sure what that means. You had a question regarding cholesterol a few weeks back, a man named James I think who cut out carbs and his cholesterol jumped as well. You recommended him adding a few more carbs. But I thought cholesterol came from dietary carbs? I miss fruit and potatoes and winter squash. I really miss the vibrant and energetic person I used to be, also. **Some reference points that may or may not be useful for you that you don't need to add to my question, or read out loud, but just in case you need more info along with the novel I've already written: We work in a seasonal restaurant so we have winters off, which is when I try to wrangle my health back in line before the slow slide into the madness of summer. I'm TIRED of this merry go round. I want to be healthy and sustain my vitality all year long. I have really good work shoes and orthotics only available at my podiatrist's office. Interestingly I had bunion surgery in 2001 for both my big toes. My newest bunions started paining me in late 2019. 2017 I had 4 menstrual cycles all year, then 2 each in 2018 and 2019, then my last one in May 2021. My cycles have been irregular throughout my whole life. I have never been pregnant. When this all began an older male doctor bullied me onto the pill. I stopped after a month because I felt WEIRD. I've not had Covid that I know of, but I did fall for the 3 jabs: April and May of 2021, and January 2022. Never again though. When I was very little I reacted badly to the DTP shot (lower body paralysis for a day after) so I was hesitant to get the C shot but didn't seem to get anything but a sore arm, knock on wood. I guess only time will tell with that situation. Did I mention tong-itis (the kitchen version of tennis elbow) in both arms? In 2017 it was so bad I couldn't shift the gears in my car. Basically I am just inflamed, stiff, tight, contracted. I know I need to stretch more or roll on my foam roller or fascia balls but then I think so much about what I need to do I don't do anything and I end up sitting in my chair all day, dreading work Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT. Robb holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and is a former California State Powerlifting Champion (565 lb. Squat, 345 lb. Bench, 565 lb. Dead Lift) and a 6-0 amateur kickboxer. Wolf has provided seminars in nutrition and strength & conditioning to a number of entities including NASA, Naval Special Warfare, the Canadian Light Infantry and the United States Marine Corps. In this episode, Robb Wolf talks about what inspired him to get started in the health space and the inspiration behind his three best-selling books. If you're having difficulty adjusting to a keto lifestyle, Robb explains what could be happening. First and foremost, you need to make sure your electrolytes are up to par; that's why Robb created LMNT, an electrolyte drink mix with everything you need. Tune in as we chat about the 7-day carb test, genius chip scientists, and the benefits of time-restricted eating. He had this sneaky suspicion that better food and exercise could lead to better outcomes. So, Robb was interested in health at an early age. He was a California State powerlifting champion and got into Thai boxing and jujitsu pretty early on. It led to an undergrad in biochemistry, and then he was looking at either medical school or the research track. In college, Robb was experimenting with his diet. He was tinkering with a low-fat, high-carb vegan diet. Robb ended up making himself very sick. On his vegan diet, Robb was on a blood sugar roller coaster all the time, he had all these gut issues, and his depression was in pretty rough shape. Eventually, he changed over to a paleo diet, and it saved his life. [08:30] Spoiler Alert: Not Everyone Knows What They Are Talking About on The Internet If you're new to eating a raw diet or keto, you need to know the basics. Paleo, keto, and carnivore all revolve around protein. Providing nuance can be confusing when starting a new lifestyle. It's valuable to look at a variety of different people when finding advice on the internet. Learn from people who have had success in their lifestyle and are flexible. Remember, when starting a new lifestyle, it should be simple. [14:45] Are You Having A Hard Time With Keto? Robb Wolf Explains Why A lot of the problems that people experience is just inadequate sodium intake. If you keep your electrolytes up, you can often subside cravings. Keto can be a train wreck if you are a high-intensity athlete. On hard training days, you may or may remain in ketosis despite eating 200 grams of carbohydrate per day. [19:40] It's Critical To Keep Your Electrolytes Up To Help With Sugar Cravings You need adequate sodium. Otherwise, you may suffer from lethargy and fatigue. If you are fairly active and live in a hot, humid environment, your base level of sodium intake needs to be higher than what you probably think. If you're eating a minimally processed diet, then a lot of your food doesn't come with salt. You need to add salt to your diet or make sure salt is included in your foods. If you have an electrolyte imbalance, it can feel like you're hungover. [22:35] Drink LMNT: A Tasty Electrolyte Drink Mix With Everything You Need Get your LMNT electrolytes here:  DrinkLMNT.com/KetoKamp (free sampler pack with all orders)  Robb created an electrolyte drink mix that is formulated to help anyone with their electrolyte needs. They are perfectly suited to folks following a keto, low-carb, or paleo diet. The mixes contain an ideal ratio: 1000 mg sodium 200 mg potassium 60 mg magnesium [27:15] Are You Overdoing It With Electrolytes? Here's What You Need To Know   The first and most common thing if people really overdo electrolytes is disaster pants. If you're attached to the bathroom, then you might be overdoing it on electrolytes. The Japanese culture has traditionally consumed ten to fifteen grams of sodium per day as part of their diet. The average intake in the United States is recommended to be below two grams of sodium. Sodium isn't a potentially dangerous element to the diet. Overall, keto reduces blood pressure in most people, and fasting reduces blood pressure in everyone. [30:55] Scientists Masterfully Crafted Chips To Make Them Hyperpalatable There's this new product called the Dorito Roulette. All of the Doritos are hot, but they vary in heat. Some of them are mildly hot, medium, and then one random chip that will burn your face off hot. The scientists understand palate fatigue and novelty at a super high level. How do you get people to eat more food? Well, you need some sort of randomness of exposure. Also, you need an anticipated but unpredictable, intense experience. Smart scientists understand how the brain works, and they're using it against us to make a big profit. [36:30] Robb Wolf Talks About His 7-Day Carb Test Choose a test carb from the list in Wired To Eat. Or find 50g of effective carbs or another carb source. Get Wired To Eat: https://www.amazon.com/Wired-Eat-Cravings-Appetite-Determine/dp/0451498569/benazadi-20 With the carb test, you can determine if carbs are a great option for your lifestyle. Some people have to be really smart and mindful about which carbs they are eating. When people start lifting weight, they become more metabolically flexible. Then, they can go back and retest their carbs. Learn more about the 7-Day Carb Test: https://robbwolf.com/wiredtoeat/7daycarbtest/ [41:55] Should You Try Time-Restricted Eating? What Are The Benefits? Time-restricted eating can be a wonderful tool for inducing calorie control. Some people will respond well to eating anything between 10 am and 5 pm. Eventually, they'll start to get healthier and make better food choices. We all know that somebody who exercises and eats healthy is shockingly healthier than an obese sedentary individual. Robb is not sold that a lean and healthy individual can gain a lot of benefits from fasting. It's really, really powerful.” “If we don't have enough sodium in circulation, we will mine sodium out of our body, out of our bones to supply the sodium that we need, at least for some period of time.” “Interestingly, there's a really high linkage between low sodium intake and osteoporosis.”  “Generally, when people shift to a mainly whole food type diet, their glycemic load drops which drops their insulin, drops their tendency to retain sodium.” “The literature is pretty clear that it's far more dangerous from a health and a death perspective to have too low sodium than too high.” “I quoted these numbers in both of my books but 45 million Americans try a diet 3-4x a year and largely fail.” “If we just hammer water, what we end up doing is diluting those electrolytes and getting them further and further out of balance.” Listen to the SuperAge podcast wherever you get your pods.Connect with Robb:WebsiteThe Paleo Solution bookWired To Eat bookLMNT Electrolytes

The thing about that is that you need a certain rate of economic growth to keep that system going. If you don't have a certain rate of economic growth, then the whole system collapses." - Robb Wolf   Being Ready For The Unpredictable "There will be a lot of dislocation, a lot of pain, and the people that are going to suffer the most are the people that didn't realize this was an eventuality. They didn't realize there was a possibility of a really rainy day, and maybe a rainy month, or a rainy decade. So they're going to be surprised, and they're going to be bitter, and that's going to make them really ineffective, strap themselves, and lean into the community that they have and help each other. The bright side of that, people will be more networked in the real world. People will care more of each other." - Robb Wolf   Downside Risk Mitigation "There are a lot of folks that are afraid of facing some of these darker realities because of the anxiety they produce just thinking about economic stuff and global upheaval. But a little bit of investment in downside risk mitigation really helps you sleep at night. But then the advice I need, and what I've been realizing, I've been too good at that, I've invested too much in that. I've been preparing too much for the end of the world instead of preparing for a better world." - Robb Wolf   Links From Today's Show  Robb Wolf 103 Wired to Eat - Robb Wolf 357 Robb Wolf | Sacred Cow: The Case for (Better) Meat 403 Robb Wolf | Electrolytes: How Sodium, Potassium & Magnesium Help To Beat Brain Fog Ancestral Health Symposium 071 Food Freedom Forever With Melissa Hartwig Sacred Cow by Diana Rodgers and Robb Wolf Wired to Eat: Turn Off Cravings, Rewire Your Appetite for Weight Loss, and Determine the Foods That Work for You by Robb Wolf The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet by Robb Wolf Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, with any purchase Gavin Newsom - California's Governor 463 JP Sears | This Is How Media HIJACKS Your Mind: Stop Censoring Yourself & Heal The Tyrant Within Naval Special Warfare Wyoming Carbon Capture facility Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Joint Pain [14:15] Justin says: Hi Robb, Nicki, I must start with the obligatory -- first time caller, long time fanatic! I have a varied medical history, but the main highlights being: 6ft, 360lbs (2016) down to 185lbs (2018). Keto and fasting made this possible -- meandered back to 215 with the help of higher calories and some light weight training. I also don't have a thyroid (papillary carcinoma). My maintenance calories are really low for some reason (1700 cal) but I eat my protein first (160-180g) and tend to feel better if I fill the remaining calories with fat rather than carbs. I know I'm healthier without the weight (cholesterol, trigs, a1c all on the lower end of normal now), but I don't feel better. Mild lethargy and joint pain are what plague me. The lethargy is a struggle but isn't debilitating... the joint pain is just frustrating. Knees, ankles, hips, shoulders, and elbows nag enough to make even bodyweight workouts a challenge. The pain in my wrists and hands can be excruciating (I'm a couple years post-carpal tunnel release as well). No redness or swelling. I've been cleared for gout as well as RA (RNP 1.6, SSB/LA IGG 1.4, were positive, but nothing warranting more than a pat on the back from a rheumatologist). I'm turning to you Robb because I've heard you mention hand pain in the podcast, but I'm not familiar with your backstory there. The hardest part about all of this is I unintentionally removed red meat from my diet (temporary bro diet -- lots of chicken) and my hand/wrist pain *almost* vanished. Spoiled myself with a homemade double cheeseburger the other night and woke up with throbbing hands/wrists. As a devout keto-er and meat-asaurus, I was all in on Sacred Cow and even considered carnivore as my starting point for an elimination diet to test various sensitivities. My brain just doesn't know how to process this recent information. Can you help me make sense of all this? Thank you both for all you do! Justin   2. Achilles Tendon Rehab options & diet [24:46] Cory says: Hi Rob and Nicki, Love the show and the well balanced opinions the two of you provide. I recently tore my Achilles' tendon shooting some hoops. The ultrasound revealed a grade two tear. I am fairly active playing hockey two to three times a week and weightlifting a couple times a week as well. I'm a 45 year old high school Physical Education teacher, so on my feet most of the day, as well as demonstrating sport specific skills in class My questions for you are: Which rehab option do you think is best for my case (surgical or non-surgical)? What sort of dietary interventions could I be making to optimize my recovery? What can people do to prevent Achilles tendon injuries from occurring/reoccurring? I live in Ontario, Canada so although the healthcare is “free” it does move at a slower pace for access to orthopaedic surgeons and sports medicine doctors. Hope you can shed some light on this for me, Kind regards, Cory   3. PCOS in 14 year-old girl [33:40] Krista says Hi Guys- LOVE all that you do! 15 years ago my functional medicine doctor put The Paleo Solution book in my hands to help with my gut issues and I've never turned back! My 14 year-old niece just got diagnosed with PCOS. To back up, she was a very sick newborn, minutes away from an ECMO machine and miraculously made a full recovery. I believe having all those drugs in the beginning of her life, while saving her life, has really jacked up her microbiome and created an insatiable appetite!!!!! starting around 2 years-old. She sneaks food, eats until stuffed (she's thrown up in the past from too much food) and hence she has steadily put on weight and now she is at 195lbs. She's the most incredible kid and my heart is breaking for her!! Her parents have kept her active through sports and helped her keep a pretty clean diet, but nothing super steady and as she gets older they lose more of how and what she eats. Her most recent doctor's appointment reviled the PCOS and there was talk of birth control pills and metformin. The next stop is an endocrinologist and a natural path. Rob & Nikki, what would you do if this were your kid??? THANK YOU SO MUCH:):) Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT. My question… liver seems to be one of the best foods for us. Nutritional density, vitamins, minerals, etc. A ‘superfood'? Anyhoo, I've been wondering why, if the above is true, liver tastes so fucking awful to so many people?? An amateur thinker like myself would think if it's so great for us, we would have a propensity to desire the taste. But I'm looking to an expert thinker to show me what I'm missing. Thanks again. Long Covid [29:43] Mike says: Robb Long time listener (aka since the Paleo Solution podcast days). I'm curious to hear your thoughts on Long Covid. 61 year old male, fairly healthy/fit/active low carb/Paleo 6'3, 210 lbs; 16% body fat, pre diabetic (fasting BCG in low 100's/5.8 A1C) Not aware of a previous Covid infection but it now appears that I may have Long Covid (aka Post Viral Syndrome) Would appreciate a classic Robb Wolf stream of consciousness brain dump General symptoms Tiredness or fatigue that interferes with daily life Symptoms that get worse after physical or mental effort (also known as “post-exertional malaise”) Respiratory and heart symptoms Cough Chest pain Fast-beating or pounding heart (also known as heart palpitations) Neurological symptoms Difficulty thinking or concentrating (sometimes referred to as “brain fog”) Headache Sleep problems Dizziness when you stand up (lightheadedness) Pins-and-needles feelings Change in smell or taste Depression or anxiety Digestive symptoms Diarrhea Stomach pain Other symptoms Joint or muscle pain Regards Mike Vertical farming... At 43, today's guest committed to leaving the alcoholic version of himself in the past. By age 49, he began his personal challenge to defy the limits of what's humanly possible, transforming physically, mentally, and spiritually well into his 50s. Now, he's competing in ultra-endurance events. He recently published a book, Do it Anyway, which follows him, Scott Harlow, on his journey from a self-destructive and insecure young man to a fitness coach, actor, and athlete.    The decision to become an ultra-endurance athlete came slowly at first, starting with getting off the couch and making the choice to become healthy. While on a trip to Rome with his girlfriend, Scott came upon a book called The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf. This was a lightbulb moment–he realized he was getting older and wasn't in the shape he was and wanted to be. So, just like that, he cut gluten, dairy, and sugars and began to run around the streets of Italy. When he returned with a refreshed perspective, he picked up where he left off and continued his fitness journey.    He wanted to become healthy more than I wanted to consume unhealthy drinks and foods. Quitting drinking alcohol he had to make and still makes every day. He knew if he made the decision to change, he would follow through with it. He knew that if he put his mind to it, he could certainly do it. And it's the same for anybody, he says, it starts with a decision. Paralysis through analysis is the biggest hurdle. It's about starting–you don't need motivation when you have discipline.   Everything is geared around making things easier, which can lead to building perceived mental limits. It is easy to become complacent. The growth is in stepping out of your comfort zone and crawling past that challenge. To combat this, he recommends never taking more than one day off in a row.    It starts with the mentality of “I'm going to do the things that I need to do to make my business successful.” Thoughts lead to actions, which lead to endorphins and momentum.    That same mentality is what pushed Scott to train for and compete in ultra-endurance events, where he focuses on positive speaking and breath control to calm the mind and bring clarity while you're in high-pressure and high-stress situations and push you forward, especially when you don't want to.     Key Takeaways   Paralysis through analysis is the biggest hurdle. It's about starting–you don't need motivation when you have discipline.   Thoughts lead to actions, which lead to endorphins and momentum.    The growth is in stepping out of your comfort zone and crawling past that challenge.   LINKS   https://www.scottharlow.ca/

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens. There's no doubt that factory farming should be illegal, but that is a far cry from stating that all meat is bad. Grass-fed beef is extremely different from conventionally raised beef. In other words, the way your meat is raised matters. In today's episode, I talk with Chris Kresser, Robb Wolf, Diana Rodgers, and Nicolette Niman about the myths and stigmas surrounding red-meat consumption, how to choose sustainably raised meat, and much more. Chris Kresser M.S., L.Ac., is the codirector of the California Center for Functional Medicine, founder of the Kresser Institute, creator of ChrisKresser.com, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Cure and Unconventional Medicine. He is one of the most respected clinicians and educators in the fields of Functional Medicine and ancestral health and has trained over 1,500 clinicians and health coaches in his unique approach. Robb Wolf, a former research biochemist, is the two-time New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Paleo Solution and Wired to Eat. Robb is the cofounder of The Healthy Rebellion, a social movement with the goal of liberating 1 million people from the sick-care system. Robb is the executive producer of the film Sacred Cow. Diana Rodgers, RD, is a “real food” nutritionist living on a working organic farm near Boston, Massachusetts. She's an author, runs a clinical nutrition practice, hosts the Sustainable Dish podcast, and is an advisory board member of Animal Welfare Approved and Savory Institute. Her new book, Sacred Cow: The Case For Better Meat, and the film she directed and produced, also called Sacred Cow, are available. Nicolette Hahn Niman is a writer, attorney, and livestock rancher. She has authored the books Defending Beef and Righteous Porkchop, as well as numerous essays for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times. Previously, she was Senior Attorney for the environmental organization Waterkeeper, where she focused on agriculture and food production; before that, she was an environmental lawyer for the National Wildlife Federation. Today, she lives in Northern California with her two sons and her husband, Bill Niman, founder of the natural-meat companies Niman Ranch and BN Ranch. Robb is also the cofounder of the exploding electrolyte brand called LMNT, which I absolutely love. When I originally scheduled my conversation with Robb, he sent me a huge box of LMNT which I thought was such a cool gesture, and after drinking it for a few days Im now absolutely hooked. I have no affiliation with LMNT and get no kickback from them and I'm very hesitant to suggest or recommend supplements, but LMNT is one that I really love and has become a staple in my daily routine. And if you don't know Robb from any of the things I've already mentioned, then maybe you recognize him as a former guest on ultra popular podcasts like The Joe Rogan Experience, Ben Greenfield Fitness, Cleared Hot, Mark Bells Power Project, The Doctors Pharmacy, and many many more. If you can't tell, Robb is a guy who does a lot. He's brilliant, articulate, and unapologetically rational, refusing to let politics or other ulterior motives manipulate his conclusions but above it all Robb is an incredible man, husband, and father, and I am so excited to share this conversation with him. Mainstream media loves to smear red meat as unhealthy and disastrous for the environment.  But are cow farts really killing the planet or is that just a ploy to get you to buy fake meat products?  Would the fields behind my childhood home in New Hampshire, for example, really be better off without our happy backyard cows?  Would the ranches and wildlife reserves here in Colorado, replete with buffalo, elk, yak, pronghorn, cattle and mule deer, really be more environmentally-friendly if we simply got rid of all these dirty, burping, polluting animals? The answer isn't quite as simple as the media mavens, climate alarmists and billionaires would lead you to believe.  In an age of sprawling chemical-laden monocrops and fake meat, science is being confounded and abused.  Especially with supply chains catastrophically breaking down across the world, shouldn't we be reducing external chemical inputs and focus instead on becoming more self-reliant?  When we treat nature with respect, both animals and plants can heal the soil and the land as part of a thriving symbiotic ecosystem.  And to help separate truth from propaganda, today we're back with our friend, the one and only Robb Wolf.  Robb is a former research biochemist, powerlifting champion, New York Times best-selling author of several titles, including “The Paleo Solution,” “Wired To Eat,” and his newest book co-authored with Diana Rogers is called “Sacred Cow.”  Robb has functioned as a review editor for the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, as a consultant for the Naval Special Warfare Resiliency Program, and serves on the board of directors for a number of innovative start ups with a focus on health and sustainability. You're going to dig this show, we're chatting about:  Why the sacred cow is a gift from Mother Nature The nutritional quality of pasture-raised meat vs fake meat The importance of soil biodiversity Why we should reduce synthetic chemical-based farming and get back in touch with natural cycles How food manufacturers are capitalizing on our good intentions to peddle their ultra processed artificial products  The importance of protein as a macronutrient And tons more...
