Other guests include Rita Heikenfeld to share more make-ahead recipes for Thanksgiving, Courtney Brown from Ruah Woods, and Gary Michuta from Hands On Apologetics. Plus news, weather, sports and a whole lot more… ***** St. John Fisher's prayer for bishops Lord, according to Thy promise that the Gospel should be preached throughout the whole world, raise up men fit for such work. The Apostles were but soft and yielding clay till they were baked hard by the fire of the Holy Ghost. So, good Lord, do now in like manner with Thy Church militant, change and make the soft and slippery earth into hard stones. Set in Thy Church strong and mighty pillars that may suffer and endure great labors–watching, poverty, thirst, hunger, cold and heat–which also shall not fear the threatenings of princes, persecution, neither death, but always persuade and think with themselves to suffer with a good will, slanders, shame, and all kinds of torments, for the glory and laud of Thy Holy Name. By this manner, good Lord, the truth of Thy Gospel shall be preached throughout the world. Therefore, merciful Lord, exercise Thy mercy, show it indeed upon Thy Church. Amen. ***** Sally Read, author of The Mary Pages Full list of guestsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Poetry is the hidden language of scripture, art, and our daily experiences. In a world that values doing above reflection, we've lost the ability to understand and appreciate the role of good poetry. What does a world that's full of poetry and wonder actually look like?Joining us today is Sally Read, a Rome-based English poet, and writer. She shares how she went from being a staunch atheist to Catholic in a short span of 9 months. How after her conversion she is now wilding her prose and poetry to illuminate the life of the Church and the Gospels.
In this episode, we speak with Sally Read, the well-known British poet. Sally was once an atheist and as she says herself, deeply anti-Catholic. Sally tells us about her conversion story and how her views on the teachings of the Catholic Church shifted over time and how she began to get closer to God. We explore the influences on her early life, the importance of her father, and the life-changing friendships that helped her embrace the Catholic faith. Sally describes her conversion story in her work, Night's Bright Darkness: A Modern Conversion Story (Ignatius Press, 2016). Sally Read converted from atheism to Catholicism when her daughter, Flo, was only four years old, but it did not take long for the child to become aware that many friends and relatives did not share her mother's newfound faith. This consciousness of "two worlds" led to a great many doubts in Flo, and some rebellion. Two nights before her First Communion she suddenly questioned whether she should receive the Eucharist. Sensing the precarious nature of faith in an overwhelmingly secular world, Read began writing down the compelling reasons for holding on to both God and Church. Taking the Annunciation as her template, she explored common experiences of the spiritual life as she meditated on each part of the story recorded in the Gospel of Luke. Drawing on Scripture, the saints, and the lives of people she has known personally or professionally as a nurse, Read shows how God is with us always—even in suffering, spiritual dryness, and depression. Although inspired by a mother's loving response to a daughter, this book will speak to any believer engaged in the bliss and the bewilderment of a relationship with God. Is poetry something that is incomprehensible to you? Our guest on this episode is British poet and writer, Sally Read. Sally didn't always “get poetry” and yet poetry had a transformative effect on her. It helped her to connect in a profound way with her patients when she worked as a psychiatric nurse. She explains how in her own poetry she attempted to “grasp the interconnectedness of everything”. She describes what poetry meant to her as an atheist and now as a believer. Sally shares her favourite poets with us and suggests the steps to develop a genuine love for poetry. She finishes with a beautiful reading of one of her much-loved poems.Resources:- Sally Read's website: https://www.sallyread.net/- Night's Bright Darkness: A Modern Conversion Story (Ignatius Press, 2016)- Annunciation: A Call to Faith in a Broken World (Ignatius Press, 2019)- Dawn of this Hunger, a poetry collection

Poetry for the Season - Lent - Episode 2 This season of poetry programmes will walk with you through Lent, and provide literary nourishment for your spiritual journey. As we turn our minds and hearts to prayer, fasting and almsgiving Sally Read will take us through poems, new and old, that reflect on these topics in traditional and surprising ways. Like Jesus who began his ministry with forty days in the wilderness, we consider silence through poetry, its relationship to prayer, and the sense of ourselves stripped bare of distractions. Often the poems read and discussed will relate to the Mass reading for the following Sunday; always the poems will speak of what we're all going through: the difficulties of detachment from things, the struggle and joy of prayer, and the yearning for Christ. Join Sally as she ruminates on words sometimes divinely inspired, always very human, through this time of spiritual richness. As well as familiar poems by John Donne, George Herbert, WB Yeats, Henry Vaughan, and Gerard Manley Hopkins, Sally will be sharing new and exciting work by Sarah Law, Paul Murray OP and many others…

Bishop Robert Barron is a bona fide bibliophile. Any quiet moment outside his holy hours, he can be found at his workbench writing a book or on his patio reading one. In this episode of the Word on Fire Show, Bishop Barron discusses some new and notable books that he’s read, which range from the scholarly insight of Dietrich von Hildebrand to the poetic storytelling of Sally Read to the popular encouragement of Rick Warren. The listener question comes from a college student who wonders how God can be all-loving to his people and rain fire down on cities in the Old Testament.

Mark and Frances chat with Sally Read, author of the book, Night's Bright Darkness: A Modern Conversion Story. Sally was staunchly atheist yet converted to Catholicism in the space of only nine months. In 2010, she was heralded as one of the bright young writers of the British poetry scene. Feminist and deeply anti-Catholic, she was writing a book about female sexuality when, during her research, she spoke with a Catholic priest. The interview led her on a dramatic spiritual quest that ended up at the Vatican itself, where she was received into the Catholic Church. All along the way, Carmelite saints influenced her conversion. Also joining the conversation is Tim Bete, another member of the Our Lady of Good Counsel Secular Carmelite Community. British poet Sally Read lived in a place of great anxiety as an atheist, but could not grasp why. She was perplexed by her anxiety, and a constant, tormenting fear of falling back upon a rock to be utterly destroyed. That is, until 2010 when, after painful, confusing existential crises and deep sufferings, God revealed Himself to her. It was then that Sally began to realize that God had always been with her -that it was she who was blinded to His existence and His merciful love. God knew the absolute moment that she would be ready to receive Him, to bear fruit for Him. She now clings to the Rock Who is her redemption, serving Him through her gift for poetry and writing. A thoughtful, modern conversion story unfolds within the pages of Night's Bright Darkness through the beauty of poetic language written by Sally Read, a former psychiatric nurse, vehement atheist and radical feminist who is now devoutly Catholic. I'm so grateful for Sally's openness to join us for this delightful interview filled with immense depth as she speaks about the way in which God gently prepared her to receive Him.
