This week, Andy and Stephen have a conversation with Salomon Ligthelm, an award winning filmmaker who has directed projects for the Weekend, Ford, Adidas, and countless others. I've followed Salomon's work for a long time, ever since he broke into the industry with his beautiful short experimental films like Pater Noster or Anomaly. Now a renowned director, Salomon, a son to missionary parents who opened his eyes to the world, is a self-taught filmmaker whose international background–––a childhood spent in Johannesburg––– , Dubai, and Sydney–––figures strongly in his distinctive, visceral yet meditative work. His textural and experimental style looks to find new ways of exploring visual and narrative storytelling. His work has garnered recognition across the world, with inclusion in both the Saatchi & Saatchi and 1.4 New Directors Showcases, two Golds and three Silvers at the YDAs, a Gold Cannes Lion, multiple AICP wins with work featured at the MOMA, shortlists for Music Video of the Year at Shots, Best Alternative Video and Best New Director at the UKMVA's - and a growing list of awards from the industry including the British Arrows, Cannes D&AD. We talk about finding your feet in the industry, how to find the right stories, how personal and commercial work tie together, and how he builds a production from idea to script to crew. Salomon is one of the greats, and a kind soul as well. Salomon's website https://ligthelm.work/ Salomon's instagram https://www.instagram.com/salomonligthelm/

One reason young creatives are so focused on learning new skills is because they believe those skills will get them jobs. Sure, learning techniques will help you make better work, but at a certain point, it isn't enough to be the best button presser in the room. Directors Mike Pecci and Salomon Ligthelm break down the importance of understanding and articulating your process as a Director and how developing that process helps you define your tone as a storyteller. Your process, that toolkit we're always talking about, is what separates you as a creative. Building your toolkit allows you to compete for jobs with your process so you don't have to cut your prices.
