Win a Machine, Grow Your Team: One Shop Owner's Playbook for Smart Growth, Ep #531

MakingChips | Equipping Manufacturing Leaders

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 17, 2026 43:51

Most shop owners have stood in front of a shiny new machine and felt the pull. Buy it, and the work will come. Tim Drinkwater of Accurate Machine Products has lived both sides of that bet, the one that nearly buried him and the one that showed up as a free machining center. This conversation sits right where two of our current series meet: Gen CNC, where we talk to founders who started young, and our workforce development series. Tim started his shop in a garage in 2007, and he's blunt about how a young founder should spend those first dollars. Cash is worth more than tools you don't need. Customers come before capability. And sometimes buying an existing shop beats building one from scratch. We also get into the mistake that can quietly kill a shop. Tim bought a brand new lathe for a firearms customer who never signed a contract and then walked away. Mike shares the flip side he keeps running into, walking through shops with gorgeous, idle equipment bought on a customer's promise that never turned into a purchase order. One of those build-outs is the reason a whole company ended up for sale. Then there's the fun part. Tim won a DN Solutions SVM 4100 in the DN and Kennametal giveaway, put it to work on challenging tool steel parts, and liked it enough to go buy a second one. There's another machine giveaway coming at IMTS this year, and you can get in on it at makingchips.com/giveaway. The back half is all about people. When applicants dried up, Tim went straight to the high schools, joined the Craftsman with Character program, and stopped using the word machinist because most students have no idea what it means. It's the same thing we keep coming back to on this show. The parts matter, but the people are what carry a shop into the next generation. What's Covered in this Episode (0:00) A machine giveaway teaser, and why Tim's story matters (1:31) Starting Accurate Machine Products in a garage in 2007 (3:22) What the shop makes, from jet ski parts to finish packaging (4:43) Advice for young founders: cash beats tools you don't need (8:00) eBay machines and the leap to the first brand new machine (9:16) A new lathe, a firearms customer, and no contract to back it up (11:31) Beautiful equipment gathering dust: the shop that went up for sale (13:51) Take your shop high-end with DN Solutions (15:02) Winning a DN Solutions SVM 4100 in the DN and Kennametal giveaway (16:45) Turning the win into S7 tool steel work and a 4+1 upgrade (17:57) Buying a second SVM 4100 and standardizing on one control (20:21) Dial in your workholding with SMW Autoblok (21:10) DN service put to the test: the contactor gremlin (23:18) From zero applicants to working with the youngest generation (24:56) Youth apprenticeships and rebranding machinist to precision metal cutting (28:38) Rhett's story: four years, his own key, and a CMMC future (30:38) The industry needs accountants and coders, not just machinists (33:53) Invest in your leadership at Elevate during IMTS 2026 (34:45) Getting your crew and local students to IMTS (40:39) MakingChips at IMTS 2026: find us in the AME/Hennig booth Resources Mentioned DN Solutions Kennametal SMW Autoblok Dave Hataj with Craftsman with Character Elevate powered by AMT (IMTS 2026) IMTS MakingChips Machine Giveaway Connect with Tim Drinkwater Accurate Machine Products Tim Drinkwater on LinkedIn Tim@ampcnc.com Connect with MakingChips www.MakingChips.com On Facebook On LinkedIn On Instagram On Twitter On YouTube

S7, EP 207Tonights convo at the chaos table you're listening in on host, Jozlyn Rocki, and season regular/co-host, Lloyd Waller!  This conversation is centered around focusing on certain mindsets...how to be the solution, find ways to connect to help you expand your career,  do things outside your comfort zone, learn new skills in life, go into the show/gig as if you already have the job, finally see/know that you're supposed to be in the creative spaces you find yourself in, find ways to enjoy the creative journey, if you want to do all the things - then you also need to get out there to create the opportunities for yourself..plus how awesome it is to realize that you've reached places you used to hold up on a pedestal, or you thought were too far out of reach, early on in your creative journey.  Also, we talk about how far we've both come, since we first started our creative journeys five years ago...from voiceover, to headshots, to on-camera gigs, to improv and just continuing to move forward.  It is also cool to hear all about what Lloyd (and his brain) has been up to these days, because he has been very busy...from launching his Tic Tok channel, to creating an acting skit group, to getting on stage for his first theater audition/call back, to being on stage side by side with the improv troupe he started training with when he first started his improv chapter, traveling to other states for training and improv shows, to his latest voiceover gig where the director described his voice as a specific red wine. We of course have our random round table question at the end...which actually tells you exactly what blend of wine Lloyd's voice is!  Who's your Daddy...Meow! This is a shareable podcast where a group of creatives join together to  document their creative voiceover & on-camera journeys in real time. We hope this podcast creates inspiration, stirs up a few ah-ha moments or maybe brings to the surface a feeling of "you're not alone" while navigating the creative process. Either way, we are glad you are here.  Oh, and we also pull into our conversations at the chaos table industry professionals along with other fellow actors, to share their stories, experiences and knowledge - so we can all connect, share, learn, grow and expand together.  This podcast is for entertainment and not educational purposes!  Enjoy and thank you for listening to our Creative Chaos! *Have a creative story or journey to share, we'd love to hear it - email us at chaoskeepers411@gmail.com or jozlynrocki@gmail.com Follow all the Chaos - YT - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChG0fKKBt2QNplJowSaKU6wFB - https://www.facebook.com/keepingupwithchaospodcastIG - https://www.instagram.com/keeping_up_with_chaos/

S7, EP 208Special Guest: Mike PecciJoin us tonight at the Chaos Table and listen in on our conversation with award winning Director, filmmaker, writer and visual storyteller Mike Pecci.Mike is known for blending horror, science fiction, and emotionally grounded genre filmmaking with striking cinematic imagery. Classically trained in silent film directing and cinematography in New York, Pecci built his career directing commercials, music videos, and branded content before emerging as one of the most distinctive voices in independent horror cinema. His work combines old school visual storytelling with modern cinematic intensity, drawing inspiration from filmmakers like John Carpenter, Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, and Andrei Tarkovsky.Pecci first gained major attention with his viral science fiction horror short film 12 Kilometers, a Lovecraftian nightmare inspired by the real life Kola Superdeep Borehole. The film became a cult phenomenon online, praised for its atmosphere, practical effects, sound design, and cinematic ambition. The film generated a massive grassroots following through an unconventional “you need the director's permission to watch it” release campaign, helping it spread virally throughout the horror community. Critics described the film as “what if David Lynch directed The Thing,” while audiences praised its haunting tone and immersive visual style. Since the release of 12 Kilometers, Pecci's films have screened at major genre and independent film festivals around the world, including the FilmQuest, where his short film Come Home earned him the award for Best Director. His experimental horror fashion film Metanoia, starring David Dastmalchian, received multiple festival nominations including Best Cinematography and Best Macro Short at FilmQuest, as well as nominations at the London Fashion Film Festival. Outside of narrative filmmaking, Pecci has directed over 30 music videos and commercial campaigns for artists and brands including Killswitch Engage, Meshuggah, Czarface, Bose, Fujifilm, Leica, and Samuel Adams. Pecci is also the creator and host of the long running filmmaking podcast In Love with the Process, where he interviews some of the industry's top cinematographers, directors, editors, and artists about the realities of the creative process. The show has become a respected platform within the filmmaking community for its honest conversations about art, struggle, obsession, and storytelling.Known for his visceral visual language, love of practical filmmaking, and emotionally driven horror, Mike Pecci continues to push genre storytelling into bold and unexpected territory. His work has earned a passionate cult following among filmmakers and horror fans alike, establishing him as one of the most exciting emerging voices in modern genre cinema.Mike's Links -Website - http://mikepecci.com/Podcast - http://inlovewiththeprocess.com/IG- https://www.instagram.com/mikepecci/This is a shareable podcast where a group of creatives join together to  document their creative voiceover & on-camera journeys in real time. We hope this podcast creates inspiration, stirs up a few ah-ha moments or maybe brings to the surface a feeling of "you're not alone" while navigating the creative process.

S7, EP 205Meet Your Actor Series - Danielle Verayo Meet Dani (Danielle) Verayo is a queer Canadian actress, dancer, and singer who made CBBC history playing one of the network's first queer characters on The Next Step. She's been in the performing arts world basically her whole life, starting dance at four years old in ballet, tap, and jazz. Her path hasn't been the typical studio-to-industry route. When that chapter ended, Dani pivoted — hard. She's been self-training in hip hop and other styles since 2014, working two jobs at 16 just to keep going, and studying Dance, Drama, and Music Theatre at a performing arts high school. Since then, she's performed at the Stratford Festival and appeared on shows like The Hardy Boys, Overcompensating, and as a dancer on Ginny & Georgia. This episode really shows that there's no single “right” path — things shift, plans change, and if you're willing to adapt, you can still build something that's yours.IG - https://www.instagram.com/daniverayo/?hl=enTT - https://www.tiktok.com/@daniverayoooThis is a shareable podcast where a group of creatives join together to  document their creative voiceover & on-camera journeys in real time. We hope this podcast creates inspiration, stirs up a few ah-ha moments or maybe brings to the surface a feeling of "you're not alone" while navigating the creative process. (Available to subscribers only, episode free to play 28th March)This guest is an incredible Para Swimmer… Ros Hardiman has spent most of her adult life in a wheelchair, having contracted Polio at age 6. She represented GB at 2 Paralympic Games and broke 8 Paralympic world records in the S7 and SB6 categories. She is an inductee into the marathon swimming hall of fame, class of 2024: having swam The English Channel in 2009 in just over 20 hours; and it is also with noting that the year prior to that in 2008, she agonisingly fell 700m short of the French coast after being in the water for over 24 hours. For that swim she was awarded the Frank Richards Endurance Award, for the most meritorious, often unsuccessful, endurance swim of the year across the English Channel… She has swam Lake Windermere (both directions), and in 2019 she crossed Loch Ness from south to north in 20 hours 10 minutes becoming both the oldest British women to swim it at the age of 67, and also as the first disabled swimmer… it was an absolute joy to chat to Ros Hardiman.

Danfoss Programming, Watching Brett Fail, AHR Recap, Mini Bar Mayhem-Episode-507Brett Wetzel and recurring guest Kevin Compass kick off with a chaotic hotel minibar mishap where simply picking up items triggers expensive charges, then roll into a wide-ranging, comedic shop talk episode. Kevin describes a slow work week of wire-pulling and quoting jobs and mentions traveling to Texas soon, while Brett recaps two weeks of nonstop travel from Vegas to Newark, Pennsylvania (visiting Remco), and New York for an NASRC event—contrasting “cake” startups with jobs where everything is on fire. They swap stories about racks being mysteriously shut off (including by people in mechanical rooms) and a condo complex protesting rooftop condenser noise until an Aldi blocked a shortcut with a parked semi. The bulk of the episode dives into Danfoss CO₂ rack controls and tuning: comparing Danfoss algorithms to E3, discussing PI settings (KP and TN), neutral band behavior, zone acceleration/deceleration, and how to export/copy controller settings to PDF for before/after records—then using ChatGPT to identify changes. They debate relief setpoints and high-pressure cutouts (including 130 bar/1885 psi references), question why certain pressure limits match, and complain about Danfoss gas cooler fan control relying on temperature instead of pressure, especially in cold weather. Brett explores IO configuration and general-purpose controllers while trying (and failing) to map sensor “S7,” then proposes relay-based fan bank staging as a workaround for EC motors that don't turndown low enough. They also cover double digital compressor control, advising to set “frequency” scaling to 0–100 (capacity) rather than 0–60, and clarify analog output differences between IDCM modules and Copeland CoreSense (including 1–5V). The conversation shifts to parallel compression and ejector systems: setting up multi-ejector models/blocks, how logic may switch from high-pressure valves to ejectors, and concerns that ejectors/parallel compression can rob already-light medium-temp load. Reviewing piping/prints, they critique oil reservoir piping, note an oil vent differential of 2.4 bar as too low, discuss desuperheater risks in cold ambient conditions, and complain about pre-relief valves and gas cooler bypass as problematic “band-aids.” They wrap with Brett's early Monday flight to Texas, jokes about being recognized on job sites, and their usual back-and-forth sarcasm and banter throughout.
