On this week's Access Hour, we bring you the second pilot of a new program here on Forward Radio, Sacrifice Zones, hosted by Stretch. We all live in a Sacrifice Zone, separated only by how well insulated we are in settler colonial projects. This week's guest is Noelle Tennis-Gulden discussing the Doctrine of Discovery. "And the fact that 80 or 85% of the mineral needed to power the green economy, needed to build our electric cars, our solar panels, etc., are located on or near Indigenous lands..." In this episode of CTBB I talk with Sarah Augustine and Sheri Hostetler about what it would look like to participate in "holistic decolonization" work. Can we re-imagine how we relate to one another and creation outside the frameworks of capitalism, white supremacy, and "extractive practices". How would it change our planet if we adopted an Indigenous cosmology and relationship to one another? I say this every time...but this is a good one folks. Guest bios: Sheri Hostetler cofounded the Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery Coalition in 2014 and continues to serve on the steering committee. She is the cohost of the Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery podcast with Sarah Augustine. Sarah Augustine Episode 83Cody and I have been on break for a while. Summer means a different pace of work, family time, and travel. We both had church conferences, and other work-related activities. And there were delays because of health issues as well. We spoke with Sarah Augustine earlier this Spring about her work as an advocate for indigenous people's justice in the USA and in Suriname. Sarah is a descendant of the Tewa people, also known as the Pueblo, and lives among the Yakima nation in central Washington. One of the major themes the indigenous people have had to resist is the Christian Nationalist policies emerging from terra nulius. In it various expressions, it has treated indigenous people as mere raw materials on the land; as a part of the land to be exploited (Bureau of Indian Affairs is a subsection of the Department of the Interior, for instance). Terra nulius has justified land theft, kidnapping, killing and domination, and the removal of children from the homes of the birth to be educated in church-based boarding schools. These experiences, established in the age of discovery, instituted, and maintained by the church, demonstrate what Christian Nationalism looks like, and that it is not hypothetical. We've been here before. Place-based watershed discipleship and the spiritual practice of reverence deepen our experience of kinship with all creation. Pastor Megan shares stories of learning to know mountains, learning to know neighbors and neighborhood, and learning to know our foremothers in the faith. To get more specific: she learns to love the contours of the Olympic Mountain range, the many neighbors who walk along 125th in Lake City, and the tent-making mother of teachers in Acts, Priscilla. In each of these cases, learning to know more fully nurtures loving more deeply, which may lead us to both honor and labor to protect all of our kin.Sermon begins at minute marker 6:03 Acts 18:24-27 ResourcesKnow Your Mothers project, by Cara Quinn: https://knowyourmothers.com/ “Know Your Mothers project returns after hiatus,” published in The Christian Century, May 4, 2022, from Emily McFarlan Miller, Religion News Service.“Reverence vs. Faith”, Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery Podcast, with Sarah Augustine and Sheri Hostetler, Season 1, Episode 5, August 2021. “We won't protect places we don't love. Sarah Augustine, our Just Peace Climate Justice speaker, discusses the uses and failures of Capitalism and calls us to engage in an Indigenous cosmology that prioritizes Community Wellbeing over individuals and profit. She deftly contrasts a world view that demands continued growth and increasing consumption against the basic reality that we exist in a closed system of mutual dependence. Sarah speaks clearly about the ways we are willing to sacrifice human life, particularly Indigenous lives,  in order to continue our extraction-based, consumerist lives without any real change. This important law, passed in 1978, strengthened the legal rights of Indigenous families and specified that when Native children are removed from the care of their families, they will be placed in the care of extended family members, families in their own tribe, or Indigenous families from another tribe. On Nov. 9, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case that challenges the constitutionality of ICWA. Some may think that pronunciations about law made in the fifteenth century during an age of European expansion and exploration would have little impact on lives today. Yet the Doctrine of Discovery is doing just that. It is a body of law and policy, legitimated by the Church, that says land is considered “empty” and therefore free for the taking if inhabited by “heathens, pagans, and infidels”. This doctrine continues to define reality for indigenous peoples across the globe in those parts of the world colonised when Europeans sought new lands across the oceans. Sarah Augustine joins the podcast, bringing a depth of experience in addressing the current and shocking impact of colonising systems and laws that continue to justify exploitation of land and peoples. Sarah believes there is still hope for the righting of wrongs, but the work is urgent as “what was done in the name of Christ must be undone in the name of Christ.” Sarah Augustine is founder and cochair of the Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery and is the author of The Land is Not Empty (2021)       See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
