Yup, so that’s out now. Next, we have Abyss New Dawn. This is out in early access now. (0:17:17) Al: I think they had a delay. Are these the ones that delayed the game? They were meant to come (0:17:24) Al: out and then they were like, “Oh no, we’ve got an issue.” There we go. This is the one. Abyss (0:17:26) Kev: Did I lose the button, too? (0:17:31) Al: New Dawn release may be delayed by a few days. During Steam’s review process, our latest build (0:17:36) Al: was rejected due to a technical issue of three achievements. (0:17:38) Al: We’ve already fixed or submitted the build for approval. Steam usually takes three to (0:17:43) Al: five days for the review, so the release date may be delayed until August 25th. It was not. (0:17:48) Al: It ended up releasing Friday 22nd, so I don’t think it was delayed at all, but they thought it might be. (0:17:49) Kev: Yeah, um, so this, first of all, I hate. (0:18:02) Al: Oh yes, this is a warm village above a deadly abyss below. Will you farm in peace or dive in? This is the sequel to Abyss. It’s (0:18:24) Al: Abyss New Dawn. But I don’t think that’s the case. It is not the case. To (0:41:27) Al: be clear, I never received any money from these collabs. I’ve only done them because (0:41:31) Al: I was a fan of the other games or because I genuinely thought the players would like (0:41:34) Al: it. That is not like the headline definitely makes it sound like he’s specifically talking (0:41:40) Al: about this collab. And he and he’s like making it makes it sound like it’s going, Oh, I’m (0:41:44) Al: really sad. People don’t like it. I genuinely thought the players would like it. Like that (0:41:48) Al: doesn’t seem to be the case. And if you look in the YouTube comments for this video, like (0:41:52) Al: it is mostly positive and or mostly just like shock in general, right? (0:44:27) Kev: There is no cozy here. (0:44:29) Kev: Um, it’s full 3D, first person, spooky lighting, you know, uh, run down shack you’re living (0:44:38) Kev: in. (0:44:39) Kev: You are leading a lamb to a sacrifice, it looks like, I don’t like that. (0:44:45) Kev: Um, okay. (0:44:48) Kev: I hate about, um, not just games, but like, I hate when anything describes itself as an (0:44:56) Kev: allegory or allegory, excuse me, um, uh, because like, that kind of defeats the point. (0:45:48) Kev: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that said, I was about to say that exactly, the it is very just straight horror, those are Resident Evil-esque looking creatures at the end of that trailer. (0:46:00) Kev: Um, and you got a shotgun, and I don’t know what you’re supposed to survive, and you’re still farming somehow, apparently. (0:46:08) Kev: Um, yeah, I’m generally not a big horror, like straight horror. (0:46:10) Al: Obviously. I mean, why not? (0:46:18) Kev: Um, at least game-wise, um, so I don’t know if I’ll be checking that out, but it’s a little more refreshing than, than, you know, what is this, Star Sand Island baby? (0:46:31) Kev: A bit, it’s New Dawns, but definitely more exciting than that. (0:46:32) Al: And the other one, which I’m not 100% sure whether we have or haven’t talked about this (0:46:41) Al: one, because like some things are ringing bells. Face à la droitisation rapide des sociétés, à la montée des pouvoirs prédateurs et aux renoncements démocratiques, Diagrammes veut documenter, relier, comprendre — et armer celles et ceux qui refusent la résignation.
La nouvelle campagne de karité vient de débuter en Afrique de l'Ouest. Il s'agit de la collecte de fruits dont on extrait une amande, qui est transformée en beurre de karité et en d'autres dérivés utilisés par l'industrie agroalimentaire. Cette campagne débute dans un contexte inédit : jamais autant de pays producteurs n'ont règlementé leurs exportations. Tout a commencé l'automne dernier, quand le Mali et le Burkina Faso ont interdit l'exportation des noix brutes et des amandes de karité. Deux autres pays ont suivi cette année le mouvement, la Côte d'Ivoire et le Togo. Le Ghana a lui décidé de conditionner ses exportations à une autorisation supplémentaire qui n'existait pas auparavant. Les flux d'approvisionnement vont donc devoir encore cette année s'adapter. La fermeture du Mali et du Burkina, les deux principaux fournisseurs du marché, avait eu un effet immédiat sur les prix dans les pays qui restaient ouverts aux achats. Ils ont ainsi plus que triplé au Bénin, pour atteindre 600, voire 800 FCFA le kilo d'amande et sont globalement restés très hauts durant toute la saison passée. « Quatre pays qui n'exportent plus, ça ne s'est jamais vu, donc l'impact est difficile à imaginer », explique un expert de la filière. Ce qui est certain, c'est que ces restrictions vont accroître la pression sur les vendeurs qui sont moins nombreux, et exacerber la concurrence entre intermédiaires qui vont chercher à mettre la main le plus tôt possible sur la nouvelle récolte alors que la demande internationale pour le beurre de karité augmente. Hausse des prix du beurre de karité Cette hausse de la demande est liée à l'explosion des prix du beurre de cacao auquel le beurre de karité peut, plus ou moins, se substituer. Elle a inévitablement fait grimper les prix du beurre de karité. Les besoins en karité s'ajoutent à « des stocks historiquement bas » d'amandes, selon le dernier bulletin d'analyse agricole N'Kalo. Ce contexte devrait encore cette année profiter aux collectrices qui ramassent les noix brutes, surtout celles des pays où les exportations sont libres et les prix susceptibles d'augmenter, comme cela a été le cas l'année dernière. Effets difficiles à évaluer Peu de chiffres sont disponibles pour savoir si au Mali et au Burkina Faso les usines ont pu produire plus et exporter plus de beurre de karité suite aux nouvelles restrictions à l'exportation. Mais a priori, les filières locales ont eu moins de problème à se fournir à bon prix, rien ne dit en revanche qu'elles aient réussi à augmenter leur capacité de production – que ce soit d'un point de vue structurel ou économique, car acheter plus sous-entend avoir une trésorerie suffisante. Une chose est sûre, la mesure prise à l'automne dernier a provoqué d'énormes disparités entre les pays producteurs d'Afrique de l'Ouest, ce qui pourrait encore être le cas cette année.

Ron Smith was a poet laureate in Virginia from 2014 to 2016. He is the author of five poetry collections: Running Again in Hollywood Cemetery, Moon Road, Its Ghostly Workshop, The Humility of the Brutes, and That Beauty in the Trees. Smith currently serves as writer-in-residence at St. Christopher's School in Richmond, Virginia.
As the author of a graphic history, I loved chatting with Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz and Paul Peart-Smith about the graphic interpretation of An Indigenous People's History of the United States (Beacon Press, 2024). An Indigenous Peoples' History of The United States originally came out in 2014 with Beacon Press. In 2019 it was adapted into a Young Peoples version by Jean Mendoza and Debbie Reese. In 2021 it was one of the three foundational texts for the amazing HBO docuseries Exterminate All the Brutes, written and directed by Raoul Peck. The other featured books were two of my all-time favorites Sven Lindqvist' Exterminate All the Brutes: One Man's Odyssey into the Heart of Darkness and the Origins of European Genocide and Michel-Rolph Trouillot's Silencing the Past: Power and the Production of History. Paul Peart-Smith has adapted what many regard as the first history of the United States told from the perspective of Indigenous peoples into a stunningly powerful graphic history. Through evocative full color artwork, renowned cartoonist Paul Peart-Smith brings this watershed book to life, centering the perspective of the peoples displaced by Europeans and their white descendants to trace Indigenous perseverance over four centuries against policies intended to obliterate them. Dr. Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, a New York Times best-selling author, grew up in rural Oklahoma in a tenant farming family. She has been active in the international feminist and Indigenous movements for more than four decades and is known for her lifelong commitment to national and international social justice issues. Dunbar-Ortiz is the winner of the 2017 Lannan Cultural Freedom Prize, and is the author or editor of many books, including An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States, a recipient of the 2015 American Book Award. The other featured books were two of my all-time favorites Sven Lindqvist' Exterminate All the Brutes: One Man's Odyssey into the Heart of Darkness and the Origins of European Genocide and Michel-Rolph Trouillot's Silencing the Past: Power and the Production of History. Racing is hard enough. After a poor performance or DNF, it makes the next race even tougher to mentally and physically prepare for. Here are my thoughts for moving forward! Accept a bad race or DNF is a possibility. We must acknowledge this fact, but also understand that a DNF does not define us. At the same time, we must recognize when a good race happens. Heart Breaker vs Hellbender. My string of tough 100s. 2. Remember that training is the journey. Enjoy the process. Race days are the celebration of the journey. We certainly can have a hard time celebrating a bad race. High Lonesome for instance was tough to celebrate even though I finished. While I was certainly proud of the fact I finished, I had a very hard time processing the race and what went so wrong so early. What I did remember was the 2 weeks leading up to the race and the time I spent with my daughter during those 2 weeks and her paying me to the finish. 3. The sting and disappointment we feel after a bad race or a DNF stems from the amount we care about the results of our goal event. In honesty, I don't know why some races are easier to let go than others. Hellbender means the world to me and I didn't finish, but I was ok with that due to being sick. Maybe that was due to the fact that I knew I could take another crack at HB vs feeling awful for 80 miles at HiLo knowing I had spent a lot of money to be out there early and acclimate, and things still went sideways. Again, I'm honestly not sure. Our thoughts and emotions are so complex. My point here is that it is ok to react in whatever way you need to even if it leaves you shrugging your shoulders in confusion. There aren't always answers and our brains have a hard time dealing with that. 4. Questioning our decisions about this sport and what's next after a bad race or DNF of a goal event can be very difficult! It's times like these I turn to resources of people that have experienced this. Currently I am reading “Puke & Rally” by Dr Rob Bell. Puking is our bad race & rally is our comeback or at least next step. After 6 really hard 100 mile races, I was left questioning whether I was really wanting to do any more. Is there something worth going after? Does something still excite me with the possibility of that event not going to plan? Those questions rattled around in my brain and if I'm real with you, they are still valid questions I'm sorting through. Do I need to train for something? Do I need a goal to enjoy my running? These are all hard questions to answer. I've recognized that my focus on training has shifted from my own to those I coach (all age groups included here). The importance I place on my own training has diminished significantly and I recognize that just getting out for a simple run is enough for me. I simply cannot devote the time I once did to training. A harsh reality, but one I am ok with. That said, I recognize that the possibility for a bad race or a DNF is higher now. So the question becomes, how do I scratch the itch for a long day in the mountains? That's where the BRUTES Challenge came in. BRUTES matches where I am with not only my training, but my mental state. You have to find that match for yourself. There's nothing wrong with just running and not having a goal. For myself, I've simply had something to work towards for my entire 34 years of running. COVID lockdown made me realize that I enjoy having something to work towards. Sometimes that something takes us awhile to figure out, and that's ok as well. Best to find something that inspires you then to just settle for an event that you just go through the motions to complete and lack joy and enjoyment in your training. 5. Another book that bears reading (rereading) is Steve Magness' “ Do Hard Things”. Magness reminds us that without challenge or the uncertainty of completion that comes with setting a goal, we can lack motivation or simply caring enough to get ourselves out there and train. It's by setting ourselves up for these challenges that we are able to test our limits and find out what it is that we are truly capable of. When I look back at HiLo, I have to admit, I'm pretty proud of the mental grit I have. It's those moments, when you're at your lowest that you truly find out who you really are! And THAT right there is why I continue to get after it! It’s held to a zero and rewards are based on how much you contribute yada. (0:07:57) Al: And then they’ve shown a little cut scene, game introduction type thing with a bunch (0:08:04) Al: of characters and they went into detail about some of the characters. (0:08:07) Al: And that’s, that’s it. (0:08:08) Al: We still don’t have any game, game footage, gameplay. (0:08:12) Al: We don’t have any real information about the game itself, like what actually is it. (0:08:18) Al: I’m assuming it’s going to be a farming game based on the name, but I might be wrong. (0:37:28) Kev: Yes, absolutely, absolutely. (0:37:30) Al: I think that’s fair, and maybe there’s a time we need to have a conversation about (0:37:34) Al: this on the pod properly, but I do feel like there’s something big about that, like (0:37:39) Al: there’s something exciting about like the Stardew updates every two or three years. (0:37:45) Kev: Yeah, and like, I think, because like, I mean, it’s Hello Pines is very much in the vein of monster collect the right maybe not as as intense as other games but it’s a lot of the same bones right of collecting dinosaurs right. (0:38:02) Kev: I think monster collectors in general like, because Moonstone Island does the same thing every couple of months they’ll release like one or two new creatures or whatever which in a game we’re collecting (0:38:15) Kev: is a big deal like, I think it’s just not exciting to collect one new one you know, like, I mean, Pokemon right they do they drop, you know, a whole (0:38:20) Al: Yeah, well that’s actually, Pokemon’s a really good example of that actually because I still (0:38:30) Al: play Pokemon Go all the time, Pokemon Go specifically, but I really miss when every (0:38:38) Al: few months they had here’s 10 new Pokemon, right? And now that it’s like every so often (0:38:45) Al: there’s one new Pokemon, you know, because they’re obviously slowing down because they can’t create (0:38:47) Kev: Yeah, or can they? (0:38:50) Al: Pokemon to add in, they can only work with what they’re given. (0:38:57) Kev: We don’t know what what gen 10 will be, could be released exclusively through Go. (0:39:01) Al: Well sure, but that’s still the Pokemon company and Game Freak making the Pokemon up, right? Niantic (0:39:03) Kev: I know, I’m, yeah, I know, I’m messing, but yeah. (0:39:07) Al: cannot create new Pokemon, they can only work with what they’ve got, and so they’ve slowed (0:39:13) Al: that down massively so that they don’t run out, but that just makes it less exciting, right? I will also say that Paleopine’s works a bit (0:39:53) Kev: Well wait, but it does keep it in the news cycle. (0:42:06) Kev: Yeah, even as someone who doesn’t have this thing, I feel very similarly. (0:42:14) Al: I feel like if I was like a student now rather than 15 years ago, instead of building a gaming (0:42:23) Al: PC, I would have just bought a Steam Deck, I think, because the portability is such a (0:42:28) Al: huge thing. And you can still use it like a standard PC by plugging it into monitors (0:42:35) Al: and stuff like that. But obviously it didn’t exist back then. Sad. And yes, sure, it’s something you might have to update more often than you would if you (0:42:59) Al: were putting a lot of money into a high-end PC. But one, you’re still spending less money, (0:43:02) Kev: …Right. (0:43:04) Al: right? Because high-end PCs cost a lot of money. People go, “Oh, well, you can get a lot more for (0:43:04) Kev: Mm-hmm. (0:43:09) Al: your money in a PC, sure, but you have to spend a lot to get something better than a console.” (0:43:13) Kev: We have updating you don’t need to update as much. (0:43:15) Al: And two, I can’t remember my number two. What was my point? What was I arguing about? (0:43:21) Al: Yeah. You. (0:43:23) Al: Yeah, it’s just it’s one of the oh, yes, I remember the steam deck is like the baseline now for games. So if you have a game, a steam deck, you know, it’s going to be able to run most games, most games are going to be able to run on it. Not all, but most games will be able to run on it. (0:43:38) Kev: Yeah, mm hmm. (0:43:41) Al: And so even though they might not run the best and they might not have the best graphics, it’s still, you know, you’re going to be able to run it. Whereas if you have like a cheap PC you’ve put together with a bunch of things or you have. (0:43:52) Al: Like a cheap laptop or something, no guarantees there, you know, having that guaranteed hardware that, you know, that someone has played someone, someone else in the world has played this game on that hardware. (0:44:05) Al: You know that you can guarantee that there is somebody that has played this game on a steam deck. And if if there’s an issue with it, they will have told the developer, whereas your random PC that you’ve shoved stuff together may well have some really weird edge case bug. (0:44:20) Kev: Yeah, yeah, you’re right. Yeah, it’s absolutely the (0:44:30) Kev: Consistency that’s around looking for here consistency, right? That’s that’s a big appeal (0:44:32) Al: Yep, exactly. Raoul Peck became known for his filmmaking and fight for racial justice with the released of his Academy Award-nominated film I Am Not Your Negro which attempts to complete James Baldwin's unfinished book about the assassinations of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, and Medgar Evers. It was followed by another documentary series, Exterminate All the Brutes. In his latest film, Silver Dollar Road, Peck completes his trilogy about the economic injustice Black people face worldwide.Silver Dollar Road closes the circle with a look at a modern-day family's fight to keep the land they purchased soon after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Notes From America Executive Producer, André Robert Lee sits down with Raoul to discuss how he came across the story in his latest film, and why he feels compelled to make these movies today. Plus, we hear how Assata Shakur Became one of America's most wanted in 1973 when state troopers on the New Jersey Turnpike pulled over her and two members of the Black Liberation Army.
