Elections have consequences. What does four more years of Trump mean for our environment? (Hint: It's baaaaaaaaaad.) But local elections were a lot better. In Eureka: Measure F failed spectacularly, firmly clarifying that Eureka voters want more housing and approve of the city's parking lots-to-apartments plan. The rejection of Measure F also hints that while money matters in politics, it only can get you so far. City Councilmembers Scott Bauer and Kati Moulton were re-elected too, which the EcoNews sees as an endorsement of the direction of the city and a rejection of the Take Back Eureka crowd (again). In Arcata: Incumbents Stacy Atkins-Salazar, Sarah Schaefer and Alex Stillman appear to have won. (Political newcomer Genevieve Serna may still be within striking distance of Stillman.) What unites these candidates? All four of the top vote getters are firmly pro-housing and were supportive of the Gateway Area Plan. Two of the candidates most critical of Arcata's housing ambitions failed to eclipse 8% of the vote. The EcoNews sees this as an endorsement of the pro-housing direction of the current council. Zooming out to the state: Voters appear to have approved Proposition 4, the California climate bond, which will invest $10 billion into fighting the climate crisis. This money may be particularly important given likely disinvestment in climate action from a unified Republican Congress and White House. Support the show

From the Jesuits of Canada and the United States, this is AMDG – and I'm Eric Clayton. I was introduced to J.R.R. Tolkien in seventh grade. This was the project that the seventh grade class of St. Catherine of Sienna participated in each year—the whole school knew it. Students read “The Hobbit” and then were tasked with creating their own version of Smaug, the villainous dragon. You could make a diorama, a clay sculpture—whatever. But the goal was to allow the world of Tolkien's Middle Earth to inspire in you a little bit of creativity. I hope that today's conversation does much the same for you. My guests are Dr. William Fliss and Dr. Sarah Schaefer. They are the co-curators of the “J.R.R. Tolkien: The Art of the Manuscript” exhibition at Marquette University. Bill is the curator of Marquette's Tolkien Collection, and Sarah is assistant professor of art history at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Both are big fans of Tolkien and his world. The exhibition, as you'll hear, is a really exciting thing. On display are manuscripts that Tolkien himself created. But these aren't just pieces of paper with his draft of “The Fellowship of the Ring.” These manuscripts are part of his world of Middle Earth, actual pieces of the lore crafted by his own hand, bearing his own beautiful calligraphy. The exhibit is running from August 19 through December 23, 2022. Tickets are on sale—I've included a number of helpful links below, both for those interested in visiting, and for those just interested in learning more. In the The Wizard of Oz , Dorothy famously exlaimed: “Lions and Tigers and Bears!” Well, in Milwaukee, it might just be “Lions!” Our Bubbler Talk question asker Hannah Tahtinen wanted to know: "I want to know if I'm imagining it, but does Milwaukee have a thing for lion statues?" You may have seen them — sitting majestically, with their long manes and clawed feet carved in stone or iron façade on houses, inside movie theaters and beside bridges. Hannah helped come up with an exhausting, but not exhaustive list of Milwaukee-area lion statues. And we asked two UW-Milwaukee art history professors, Richard Leson and Sarah Schaefer, to paw-s and weigh in. 1. Edward Diederich Lion House The lion houses around Milwaukee are characterized by two lions standing sentinel at a door. Professor Leson says they symbolize power and might — a symbol that goes back as far as ancient times. “You see these, you know, these heraldic, these opposed lions at the so-called Lion Gate at the ancient Greek
