We discuss his recently published SIGIL experiment, and why his presentiment experiment is one of his most important works. Dean shares recent discoveries of the brain and consciousness, and discusses the clinical trials for his Cognigenics company, and the progress it has made on a product to prevent Alzheimer's and memory loss. He also outlines what The Institute of Noetic Sciences is about and the work they are doing there. He discusses his new book coming out in 2025, a kind of follow up to his popular Real Magic book. Dean even offers a glimpse into his work on a science fiction script for streaming, and what it's like to take on such a project. Just how much do we control? Society really hasn't done a good job of counteracting what Wayne Dyer calls “The Big Lie”.   In his book “Real Magic” he lists 5 aspects of the big lie that most just assume are true.  Things like:I can't help the way I am. I've always been this way. . It's my nature I inherited who I am and it can't be changed. My personality is controlled and predetermined.  And if you look around society you see that to be seemingly true.  But is it? Really?  Or is it that no one has told us “hey if you don't like your life you can change it.”  It is possible. Most definitely. But it does matter a lot who you are around.  It takes a lot more mental discipline to be healthy and fit when no one in your family is healthy and fit.  If everyone in your peer group is obese, you probably are too. If everyone in your peer group drinks, you probably do too.  If everyone in your peer group exercises you probably do to.  If they eat healthy, odds are so do you. Check out Episode 525 to see how much you can actually change! I love you guys!

Dean Radin is Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), Associated Distinguished Professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and cofounder and chairman of the biotech company, Cognigenics. He earned an MS (electrical engineering) and a PhD (psychology) from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and in 2022 was awarded an Honorary DSc (doctor of science) from the Swami Vivekananda University in Bangalore, India. Before joining the IONS research staff in 2001, Radin worked at AT&T Bell Labs, Princeton University, University of Edinburgh, and SRI International. He has given over 750 talks and interviews worldwide, and he is author or coauthor of some 7 patents, 300 scientific and popular articles, four dozen book chapters, and nine books, four of which have been translated into 15 foreign languages: The Conscious Universe (1997), Entangled Minds (2006), Supernormal (2013), and Real Magic (2018).  In this interview, Dean opens the conversation by talking about why the scientific community is slow to emerge with theoretical explanations as to why anomalous phenomena occur, even with the empirical evidence. He then explains how the three main classes of magickal practice (Divination, Enchantment, and Theurgy) coincide with the three main of psychic phenomena that have been studied over the years by scientists (Clairvoyance, Psychokinesis, and Survival after death). First explaining the three most notable types of tests that have been developed over the years (tossed dice, random number generator outputs, and photon interference), Dean then explains in more detail the last test and the mystery of the ‘wave-particle duality' that ‘violates the commonsense doctrine of realism, which assumes that the physical world is completely independent of observation.' We then move on to the SIGIL (scientific investigation of gazing with intention/intuition at light) experiment that Dean performed with the funding of the Bial Foundation and RENSEP, involving practicing magicians and mediators, and the results of this experiment. Dean talks a bit about further experiments that could be created on the foundation of the SIGIL experiment, and also how all of this ties into the larger discussions about the nature of consciousness and interconnectedness.  https://www.deanradin.com/https://www.cognigenics.io/https://noetic.org/https://www.youtube.com/@InstituteofNoeticScienceshttps://www.rensep.org/https://www.youtube.com/@rensephttps://www.instagram.com/ionsonline/ https://www.instagram.com/rensep_official/Photo Credit: Jordan Engle @ Lens & SoulTheme Music & Editing: Daniel P. Cheryl Esposito welcomes Kute Blackson, inspirer, best-selling author, transformational teacher, & wisdom leader to a new generation of spiritual seekers. Kute's mission is simple: To awaken and inspire people across the planet to access inner freedom, live authentically and fulfill their true life's purpose. His recent book, The Magic of Surrender I Finding the Courage to Let Go challenges us to take a new look at surrender. “Surrender isn't giving up. It's not about breaking you down; it's about breaking you open – breaking your heart open to all that is possible for you. It's tapping into a source that is bigger than your own personal power.” Kute Blackson was born in Ghana, the child of a Japanese mother and a Ghanaian father and has lived his life on four continents. Kute's gift of oration was cultivated at an early age as he watched his minister father teach and inspire congregations throughout Africa and London. It was expected that Kute would continue his father's legacy – except Kute wanted something more in his life. He knew that what everyone wanted for him was not what his heart wanted for him. This was one of Kute's first (of many) opportunities to surrender to his truth. When he spoke his truth, he empowered himself to take a step forward into the unknown of potential. He had to let go. It was Kute's mother who quietly practiced surrender as a life principle – everything is as it should be; every moment is a learning, and an opportunity to live one's truth. Kute lives this everyday. Are you ready...to surrender to what life wants for you? Join Cheryl Esposito & Kute Blackson to explore the Magic of Surrender!

Some optical illusions can make celebrities look like they've swapped genders, and it's all about the way we see faces. Richard Russell, a researcher, studied how the contrast in facial features plays a big role in making a face look masculine or feminine. For example, women's faces naturally have darker eyes and lips compared to their skin, giving them higher contrast, while men's faces have less contrast. It's like a magic trick for your brain because it relies on how we're wired to interpret gender through subtle facial details. Let's see if this and other optical illusions can fool your brain easily. Does It Fly?
The Real Magic of the Original Crow Movie

Does It Fly?

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 23, 2024 45:54

Alex Proyas' 1994 The Crow is a genuinely great film, released at a time when “comic book movies” weren't an all-encompassing pop culture phenomenon, and one that plays very much like a unique action-horror film (rather than a superhero one). We can't recommend it, or its unbelievably badass soundtrack album, enough. The Crow has a little of everything: it's a horror movie, it's a love story, it's a twisted superhero origin story and revenge tale, and it's a unique time capsule of a particular moment in pop culture history. But all of those things have been discussed to death elsewhere, right? Are we breaking down the unique ways that Eric Draven kills the men who wronged him during his life? Nope. Are we delving into the philosophies surrounding the prospects of life after death? Not this episode! Are we walking about how cool it would be to make friends with a crow? Abso-freakin'-lutely!An under-discussed part of The Crow is the role that an actual, physical crow seems to play in Eric's journey of post-life revenge. The bird is somewhat magical, but not a complete manifestation of the supernatural. In fact, it functions very much like the concept of a “familiar” often found in fantasy literature. So that's the topic we're taking a birds-eye look at this time around. And believe it or not, there's a LOT to unpack. Seriously, you have no idea how smart crows are, or just how feasible some aspects of the magical familiar might have roots in real science. Want to find out more? Watch it right here or on our YouTube page.SUGGESTED VIEWING Unfortunately, you can't divorce The Crow from the real life tragedy that surrounds it, notably the untimely accidental death of star Brandon Lee during filming. Shudder's Cursed Films season 1 episode 4 deals with this, and it's worth a watch if you want more background on this infamous moment in cinema history. There are a bunch of mediocre sequels to the original film (and even a TV series!), but we don't recommend them. Anyway, the only piece of The Crow franchise that we considered for this episode was that original, classic 1994 movie. However, if you want to get a sense of just how great a talent Brandon Lee was, and how this movie SHOULD have kickstarted a new phase of his career that would have brought him a level of mainstream stardom, allow us to recommend 1991's Showdown in Little Tokyo (co-starring the great Dolph Lundgren!) and 1992's Rapid Fire. Neither are exactly masterpieces, but they sure do kick some ass and Brandon is a natural. For some…less friendly…birds, you absolutely should watch Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds if you haven't already. You'll be perfectly happy not having any of them as your familiars. And of course, there's a new reboot of The Crow in theaters now. There's some crossover with our further readings below, but this New York Times video that asks (and kind of answers) the question of “how smart are crows” is quite a watch!Oh, and the movie that freaked Hakeem out as a kid? That's a 1975 weird one starring none other than William Shatner in one of his...less memorable...rolls, called The Devil's Rain.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! But before we get into the scientific and mythological readings to go with this episode, allow us to suggest that you give James O'Barr's original comic series that launched this franchise a read. It's harrowing, beautiful, violent stuff, and just different enough from the movie that you won't feel like you know everything that's gonna happen! OK, now back to your regularly scheduled science-y stuff.FamiliarsIt will come as no surprise to anyone that there isn't a ton of serious scientific writing on the subject of familiars. But the more “new age” corners of the internet have done their homework, and the above article is a compelling read.Crows in MythologyCrows and ravens are recurring symbols in a number of religious and mythological traditions. Learn up on them in case one decides to quiz you.Crows and MasksIn case you need proof that you should never wrong a crow, because they WILL remember your face. How to Befriend a CrowWe're serious. From no less a source than M.I.T!Crows use tools! Not only do crows know how to make and use simple tools to accomplish their goals, it apparently puts them in a really good mood, too!The Eyes of JackdawsNo, that isn't the name of another horror movie. But Hakeem talks about this study on how these particular birds can read human expressions. We're kicking off our Halloween celebrations early, so go light some candles and read Edgar Allan Poe's “The Raven” for some kicks. “Nevermore.”WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?We recently unpacked three gadgets and concepts for the 60th anniversary of James Bond in Goldfinger. "We are pulled away from this very early on. This is why we call it magic because it's there, it's natural, it's nature, but we are disconnected from it from very early on because we are told  not follow our hearts and not live in accordance with our own inner knowing that we stop abiding in that and start to do things that are solely from a state of survival and societal norms. Following the heart doesn't make sense in a world solely led by intellect. Intellect is not the only way to exist. It's like driving a car on one wheel."Welcome back to Journey with Akia.

Today, I'm going to share step-by-step instructions for an amazing technique that's one of the best sore throat remedies I've found. To perform this technique, find the area of dysfunction and work on the opposite side. This remedy seems to work by affecting the fascia in the back of the neck to create space in the front. This also allows you to control the pitch and volume of speaking and singing more easily. Here's how to relieve a sore throat step-by-step: 1. Locate where the problem is 2. Draw a circle to the same spot on the opposite side of the neck 3. Press with 2 fingers on the spot while holding the head 4. Hold for 1 to 2 minutes Find the most tender spot! Assess if the tenderness moved up or down after implementing the technique. If so, try again on the most tender area. This sore throat remedy helps improve circulation and space in the area. You can even perform this on yourself with my special tool!

For this week's episode, the recent release of Dune Part 2 reminded me of a Sewers of Paris episode from 2018 where my guest Ryan and I talked about the grip that fear can have on a person's mind. Ryan grew up in a rough environment, where his parents subjected him to devastating homophobia and dangerous "ex-gay" treatments. After Ryan legally emancipated himself from his family, what followed was a period of homelessness and addiction that took years for him to overcome. But overcome them he did — and now in 2024 he's working as a civil rights attorney in Los Angeles. We originally recorded this interview back in 2018, during a thunderstorm in Colorado, so you'll hear some noise of rain in the background and a few rolls of thunder that were oddly well-timed for Ryan's story. The next topic from our book up for discussion is old magic steeped in myth and tradition. Katy talks with co-host and co-editor Emily Strand and contributor Lana Whited (Ferrum College) about their chapters "The Real Magic of Christmas in Harry Potter" and "Here Be Dragons and Phoenixes: A Thematic Direction for the Fantastic Beasts Series." Emily looks at the theological roots of magic and Christmas as a time for darkness turning to light - and thus an appropriate season for Harry to have significant experiences where he learns new information, often about the past. Lana discusses the origins of magical creatures in Asian mythology that hold deep significance in both The Crimes of Grindelwald and The Secrets of Dumbledore, which explore the past through prophecy and family history. The wizarding world has a sense of being frozen in time, and journeys into magical worlds often feel like journeys into the past. Part of that is the lack of modern Muggle technology that comes not only from moving into the past but also into nature, which is especially prominent with a magizoologist as the protagonist of the Fantastic Beasts series. Christmas and creatures hold longstanding traditional connotations - ideas of rebirth and resurrection, enchantment and mystery - that come to the forefront when they are mentioned in these stories.

On this episode, we dish about this year's Harry Potter Academic Conference and preview our new book, Potterversity: Essays Exploring the World of Harry Potter (McFarland). Katy and Emily welcome Potterversity producer Laurie Beckoff and technical editor Emma Nicholson, as well as Louise Freeman, Mark-Anthony Lewis, and Lana Whited to talk about HPACs past and present. This year's virtual conference allowed people from all over the world to come together, and we included the comments of other conference attendees in the webinar chat. We reminisce about our first experiences at the conference. Looking back helps us to see the evolution of Potter Studies through the last dozen years. What keeps us coming to the conference? Wonderful discussions, inspiration for new ideas, deep dives into the Potter stories, like-minded people, constructive argument and critique, and a space in which Harry Potter is taken seriously. There is always something new to say and fresh perspectives on the series, as well as the movies and other related works. We all value the friendships we've developed with people from all different disciplines and walks of life. Reflecting on presentations we heard at this year's conference that we found especially illuminating, we made suggestions for what we'd like to hear more about in the future. Katy and Emily also reveal details about the new Potterversity book - currently available from McFarland Publishers - providing an overview and hearing from some of the authors about their chapters. Mark-Anthony talks about his chapter “Uncle Remus's Shack,” about tokenism as portrayed in characters like Lupin, Dobby, and Madame Maxime. Emma shares how she reconstructed Sirius Black's story in “Padfoot Revelio!” and in the process uncovered details that will surprise you and build empathy toward this complex character. Laurie explains her chapter “It's All Fun and Games Until . . . ,” in which she compared the use of games in Harry Potter and Arthurian literature. Louise's “The Weasley Witches” analyzed how Ginny and Molly can be interpreted through the archetypes of the Amazon and the Mother, as well as the significance of Weasley sweaters. Lana explored the mythic significance of fantastic beasts in “Here Be Dragons and Phoenixes.” Emily's chapter investigates the motifs and themes of the holiday season in “The Real Magic of Christmas in Harry Potter,” and Katy ponders transhumanism and cultural appropriation in “Arthur Weasley and the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts.” We also provide hints about other chapters in the volume to whet your appetite for the book chapters and accompanying podcast conversations.
