Send us a textKatie and Bridget test each other to see if they're robots as they re-watch the cult classic: Blade Runner! It's a movie all about how despite living your entire life thinking that you're just a normal human, you could actually be a REPLICANT (aka robot) whose had your memories IMPLANTED and you're going to DIE in less than 4 years! Ever think about that before!? NOW YOU WILL! Come along as we meet Deckard, our movie's "Blade Runner" who is tasked to hunt down some replicants who have invaded LA in 2019 (lol) and are wreaking havoc. When he meets Rachel, a woman who just discovered she's actually a replicant, Deckard begins to develop emotions for the robots as he continues to hunt them down. This movie asks the existential questions such as: How important is autonomy and choice in life? What is the value of life? And... Are all replicants living the polyamorous lifestyle or something because those guys be making out a lot!? We've got action, Reddit threads, and deep ass quotes in this 80's sci-fi film! Released in 1982, it stars Harrison Ford, Sean Young, Rutger Hauer, Daryl Hannah, Joanna Cassidy, and Brion James.

Brent Lucas, CEO of Envoy Medical, highlights the lack of innovation in hearing aids and the need to better address hearing health. Envoy has developed fully implanted hearing devices that provide 24/7 hearing assistance without the need for daily recharging of the battery.  With the introduction of over-the-counter hearing aids and the advanced Apple AirPods Pro 2, customer options have been expanded, making it easier to address some forms of hearing loss. Implanted devices eliminate the limitations of external hearing aids and reduce the impact of hearing loss on their daily lives. Brent explains, "Part of the problem in the hearing loss industry has been that it's not well understood. So there has not been a great deal of competition and innovation in the hearing loss world. Most of us have thought about hearing loss and how it's addressed by looking to our grandparents, the elders. Plenty of people joke about our dads or our grandfathers not being able to hear our grandmothers. When I tell people I'm in the hearing industry, the first thing that they say is, I can't hear you. And I always fall for it. And I say, I'm in the hearing industry, and they come clean that it was a joke. At the end of the day, there are unmet needs in finding solutions for people that are not just the status quo. That's really where Envoy Medical is building products that are fully implanted, in a sense, a better life because they're not tied to their hearing loss." "Right now, the current solutions on the market are all external products that need to be taken off at night or around water in the shower, during strenuous activity, working out, sweating too much, that sort of thing. You have to take your external device off. Our devices are fully implanted, meaning you can be capable of hearing 24/7, hearing all day, every day. We think that's the right thing to do for a patient because your hearing loss, after all, is a 24-hour problem. It shouldn't be that your solution is only on for part of the day."  #EnvoyMedical #HearingLoss #Acclaim #HearingAids #CochlearImplant $COCH #HearingHealth  envoymedical.com Download the transcript here

Next Dr. Mitchell shares the implanted Word of God which is able to save our souls. The Word of God works effectively in our lives as His divine revelation of Himself and His Son, Jesus Christ. It's hard to find the freedom Jesus offers in a culture steeped in religion, especially when the book of James keeps getting thrown around like a spiritual hammer. Too often, James is used to turn faith into a tool for validating our salvation instead of the lens that lets us see it. No wonder anyone who's caught the message of grace might get twitchy around a book in the New Testament that is all about law. But what if our fear of James comes from years of misrepresentation? Welcome to our new podcast series on James—the book everyone loves to quote but few want to deal with! It's time to strip away the misconceptions and see that James isn't questioning our foundation, he's showing us what it looks like to dance on it! The soft and stretchable ‘jelly batteries’ that could be implanted in humans to treat health conditions

Soft and stretchable jelly-like strips could be the key to providing electric power on and even inside human bodies. Scientists at the University of Cambridge say the stretchability of their newly developed ‘jelly battery' could be used in implants in our bodies where it was previously impossible. Stephen O'Neil, a PhD researcher at the University of Cambridge who worked on the study demonstrates: “This is an example of one of the pieces of gel that we use to make up the battery. As you can see it's very soft and stretchable just like jelly really, and with about five of these stuck together we can make the hydrogel power source.” Each battery consists of a three-dimensional network of polymers containing over 60% of water. As well as being stretchy, the hydrogels can be squashed without permanently losing their original shape and can heal themselves when damaged, making them ideal for implanting inside the body. The stretchability of this battery allows it to be usable in contexts not possible with other types of hydrogel batteries. “Demonstration of stretchability means that if you were to put them on to your skin and wear them as a wearable, you could have flex of your skin, of your muscles, and it wouldn't change the performance of the device itself,” says Jade McCune, PhD researcher at the University of Cambridge. The researchers are planning future experiments to test the hydrogels inside real living organisms before they can be considered for medical applications. “The ultimate goal is for us to implant these power sources inside someone's body and then they can last over several days or weeks outputting power to power these devices which can either continuously record or continuously act as therapy for example for things like deep brain stimulation for trying to cure diseases like Parkinson's,” O'Neil says. These batteries may be a long way off from being used on or inside human bodies, but the researchers here at the University of Cambridge say the scope of their potential could be game-changing for medical science. David Nichols, CEO of Orthobond aims to address the unmet need of medical device infection and contamination due to bacteria preventing devices from bonding to the bone or tissue. Orthobond's solution is the Ostaguard technology, which uses a molecule with a positive charge to attract and rupture bacteria. The technology is effective against common strains of bacteria and is primarily needed in the operating room, where medical devices can be exposed to bacteria before being implanted. This mechanical approach to fighting bacteria does not require a drug that can potentially create a superbug.  David explains, "Our bodies have great immune systems, and normally, it takes tens of millions of bacteria to cause an infection. However, numerous studies show that in the presence of an implant, a hip or a knee, or a pacemaker, it could take as few as 200 bacteria to cause an infection. When an implant goes in the body, it seems to overwhelm the immune system and can't eradicate that bacteria from your body. It takes a lot fewer bacteria than we think." "Also, that may not manifest into an immediate infection that happens during the first week of the hospital. It may be, especially for mechanical devices like hip, knees, and spinal implants, that bacteria forms into a biofilm that causes implants to get loose. So one of the bigger problems is a long-term failure of function of these implants that sometimes happens in the first, second, or third year post-surgery." #Orthobond #Implants #MedicalDevices #OperatingRoom #Hospitals orthobond.com Download the transcript here

First Irish patient implanted with innovative heart failure management system from Irish company FIRE1

Dublin-based FIRE1 today announced that the first Irish patient has been successfully implanted with its FIRE1 System for remote heart failure monitoring. The innovative system has the potential to positively impact thousands of people living with heart failure in Ireland every year and alleviate the burden on hospital emergency rooms. The successful implantation took place at University Hospital Galway in the First in Human Clinical Investigation of the FIRE1 System in Heart Failure Patients (FUTURE-HF). The study will assess FIRE1's novel solution to improve outcomes for those living with heart failure. Irish medtech company FIRE1, whose CEO, Conor Hanley, was recently announced as a 2024 EY Entrepreneur of the Year finalist, seeks to transform heart failure management by enabling patients to monitor and control their fluid volume themselves with a device at home, similar to how continuous glucose monitoring transformed diabetes care. Fluid overload is a classic clinical feature of heart failure, which affects approximately 90,000 Irish people and is a leading cause of hospitalisations, including high admission and re-admission rates in Ireland. FIRE1 CEO and President Conor Hanley said, "I am especially pleased to announce our first patient in Ireland. This represents a true clinical research success for Ireland, being one of the first systems of its nature to be developed, manufactured, and now in a clinical trial in Ireland. It showcases Ireland's capability for groundbreaking medical innovation with the potential to change healthcare delivery globally. The FIRE1 team is steadfast in our mission to help millions of people around the world living with heart failure to get their normal lives back, but it is very special to be able to give access to people here at home. It is gratifying to see the physician interest in our novel technology. I would like to extend my thanks on behalf of the whole FIRE1 team to the fantastic staff at UHG, and most importantly to the patients who continue to put their trust in us and participate in this important research." The FIRE1 sensor is implanted into the body's largest vein, located in the abdomen, known as the inferior vena cava (IVC) and works by continuously measuring the size of the IVC, giving a marker of the amount of fluid in the body. High levels can increase the risk of breathing difficulties and a build-up of fluid in the lungs, which lead to an emergency hospital admission. The patient wears a belt reader around the abdomen for around a minute a day to take a reading from the sensor and the data is sent to the patient's clinical team at the hospital. The system is designed to alert whenever the patient's condition deteriorates. Professor of Interventional Cardiology and Translational Medicine at University Hospital Galway (UHG), Prof Faisal Sharif performed the implant. "We are delighted to bring this new, transformative technology to Ireland for the first time," said Prof Sharif. "The procedure was very straightforward, minimally invasive and the patient was confident using the FIRE1 system and taking the readings. The data we will get from this patient will give a new window into heart failure management and has the potential to dramatically improve our understanding of this patient's condition, and to enable proactive changes in medications that will keep them healthy and at home. We hope to implant further patients at UHG while recruitment is still active."

Six pro-life rescuers found guilty in Tennessee, Gen Z's moral confusion, Elon Musk’s company implanted computer chip in brain

It's Wednesday, January 31st, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Pakistani Christian students no longer required to study Islam Last week, Pakistan's government announced it will no longer require Christian students to study Islam in schools. Non-Muslim students will even be allowed to study the religion of their family.  International Christina Concern noted, “This decision is a small win for religious freedom in Pakistan, where Christians are routinely subjected to blasphemy laws, mob violence, and forced marriage and conversion.” Under the new rules, Christian students in schools will be able to study the Bible, church history, the influence of Christianity in Pakistan, and even Christian martyrs in the country. Please pray for this opportunity for Christian education in Pakistan and for many to come to the knowledge of Christ through it. This year's predicted global economic growth -- 3.1% The International Monetary Fund  upgraded its global economic forecast yesterday. It now expects global growth of 3.1% this year and a smaller chance of economic contraction.  The IMF forecasts the U.S. will grow 2.1%. The U.S. economy finished 2023 stronger than expected with gross domestic product increasing 3.3% in the fourth quarter.  Six pro-life rescuers found guilty in Tennessee The Daily Wire reports that six pro-life rescuers were found guilty yesterday during federal court proceedings in Nashville, Tennessee. The Biden administration accused them of civil rights conspiracy as well as violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. The pro-lifers participated in a peaceful protest at an abortion mill in Tennessee on March 5, 2021. The protest included prayers and singing hymns. The men and women on trial include Chet Gallagher of Tennessee, Coleman Boyd of Mississippi, Heather Idoni of Michigan, Cal Zastrow of Michigan, Paul Vaughn of Tennessee, and Dennis Green of Virginia. The conspiracy charge can carry a prison sentence of up to 11 years and fines of up to $350,000. Please pray for these pro-lifers as they face sentencing in July. Psalm 43:1 says, “Vindicate me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation; Oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!” Pro-life leader Rusty Thomas reacts to guilty verdicts of pro-lifers Rusty Thomas, the founder of Kingdom Leadership Institute in Waco, Texas, posted a Facebook video with his reaction to the unjust guilty verdicts against the six pro-life rescuers. Listen. THOMAS: “This is a sad day. It just shows just how unjust our justice system has become, how far from God we have gone. ‘No greater love have any man to lay down his life for a friend.' (John 15:13) That ‘no greater love' ethic has just been stomped to the ground by our justice system. “Pray that this awakens the church and awakens our nation. This is despicable. This is tragic. We've lost our moral compass. We don't know the difference between right and wrong and good and evil anymore. It's gotten so mucky and murky. This just demonstrates just how far we have gone from the Father's house and how desperate we are for the Lord's intervention.” Texas Governor vs. U.S. Supreme Court over border crisis Last Wednesday, Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott  declared the immigration crisis an invasion and invoked the state's “constitutional authority to defend and protect itself.” Abbott said the authority, “supersedes any federal statutes to the contrary.” On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the federal government can take down razor wire that Texas puts up at the southern border with Mexico. However, Abbott said he will only increase state border patrol, barriers, and replace the razor wire.  At least 10 states have sent National Guard troops and personnel to support Texas. Gen Z's moral confusion A new survey from the Public Religion Research Institute found nearly a third of Gen Z adults identify with sexually perverted lifestyles.  Seventy-two percent of Gen Z adults, those who are 18 to 25 years old, identified as heterosexual. About a third of Gen Z adults are religiously unaffiliated, and 10% identified as non-Christian, the highest of any generation. Psalm 14:1 says, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.'” Gen Z adults' identification with sexually perverted lifestyles is double that of the Millennials at 16% and quadruple that of Gen X at 7%. Elon Musk's company implanted computer chip in brain And finally, Elon Musk announced his startup Neuralink implanted a computer chip in a person's brain for the first time. The tech billionaire wrote on X, “Initial results show promising neuron spike detection.” Musk said the device is designed to allow patients to operate a phone or computer by thinking. First users will be those who lost the use of their limbs.  Neuralink's website noted, “The device is designed to interpret a person's neural activity, so they can operate a computer or smartphone by simply intending to move – no wires or physical movements are required.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, January 31st in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.
