In today's episode of Yoga | Birth | Babies, we're diving into some of the common—yet often overlooked—stressors of pregnancy. We explore everything from hormonal changes and PMADs (Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders) to the profound life shifts that come with this transition. We also take a closer look at trauma-informed care: what it really means, how trauma is defined, and how to effectively communicate your needs to your care provider when it comes to support during birth. To have this conversation today with me on Yoga| Birth| Babies I have maternal health specialist Ja'Neen Jenkins. With a deep passion for supporting mothers through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, Ja'Neen integrates her expertise as a licensed mental health therapist, doula, and perinatal coach to provide compassionate, trauma-informed care. Ja'Neen holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, a Master's in Teaching from Louisiana College in Pineville, and a Master of Science in Counseling from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. She currently serves as the Clinical Supervisor at Jenkins Counseling Services, where she is committed to shaping the future of perinatal mental health care. In this episode, we talk about everything from birth debriefing and birth maps to nervous system regulation and how it influences the flow of labor. If you or someone you love is expecting, this episode is a must-listen. So often, people leave their birth experience feeling unsettled or disappointed. But as Ja'Neen and I discuss, the work done during pregnancy can significantly reduce the risk of birth trauma and postpartum mental health challenges. Vet and Clinical Supervisor, Lara Howe, at Pet Blood Bank joins us to chat about this life saving charity. Founded in 2007, Pet Blood Bank is a charity that offers a blood bank service for dogs who run very similarly to the human blood service. Owners bring their dogs along to donate blood at one of their many sessions across the UK. The blood is then processed and stored ready to be sent out to vets when they need it. Every donation a dog gives can help to save the lives of up to four other dogs. Before Pet Blood Bank, vets would have to find a donor themselves, often in the middle of the night and with a very sick patient waiting. Setting up Pet Blood Bank means that vets now have immediate access to blood when they need it. We chat about which dogs make great donors, their necessary age, weight, the procedure, the number of times they can give blood in a year.We chat about the different blood types and why there is a demand for the less common negative blood type which belongs to only 30% of dogs. Just as giving blood for humans this is positive experience, and one that's rewarded with treats, bandanas to become a fun experience. Pet Blood Bank operates nationally and is always looking for more donors! In this episode of the Psychedelic Medicine Podcast, Star Rose Bond, LCSW joins to discuss the topic of using psychedelic-assisted therapy to address intergenerational trauma. As seen in Huffpost, Vice and Psychology Today, Star Rose is a Renegade Psychotherapist, Social Activist, Clinical Supervisor for PEARL Institute and Co-Founder of Life Camp. With a Bachelor's degree from NYU and a master's from Columbia, Star brings 15 years of clinical trauma therapeutic services and experience serving marginalized, under-resourced and at risk populations specializing in harm reduction and PTSD recovery. In this conversation, Star introduces the topic of intergenerational trauma and explores how psychedelic experiences may be leveraged to address this pernicious condition. She begins by explaining what intergenerational trauma means, how it gets passed down, and how it manifests. Star talks about the importance of psychedelic therapists and facilitators having awareness of trauma-informed modalities in order to better serve these populations. She also discusses the complexities of addressing generational trauma, and how it can often be difficult to process sensitive topics within the family unit. However, in conclusion, Star emphasizes that the capacity to heal is an intrinsic aspect of human existence, and that even in particularly dark moments, it is possible to get in touch with this possibility.    In this episode you'll hear: How the conditions of Capitalism produce and exacerbate chronic stress The profound impact of neglect and abuse in early childhood  The unique experience of intergenerational trauma for BIPOC peoples and the recent rekindling of a spirit of connection in these communities due to psychedelic medicines  How processing intergenerational trauma can transform familial relationships Ethical and practical considerations for facilitators and therapists guiding clients through psychedelic experiences aimed at resolving deep-seated trauma What to look for in a psychedelic-assisted therapist or facilitator   Quotes: “Just because you have several students or several clients who've experienced the same trauma, don't make the assumption that they're all experiencing it the same way. Or maybe you'll meet a client who has had trauma similar to yours—don't assume that they have undergone the same emotional impact or psychological impact as you. The truth of the matter is we are complex beings. We have so many different moving variables that go into our psychology and that essentially indicate or play a role in how we respond to things.” [8:43] “We can't always express or understand why things happen the way they do. But, we can start to make meaning through a spiritual understanding which in turn lends itself to a sense of ease and comfort.” [22:20] “When you are going into these experiences as a facilitator—whatever your background is—it is of the utmost importance that you are hyper cognizant and hyper aware of the harms that can be caused by not being aware of the ways in which you can navigate someone else's trauma as it shows up.”  [25:02]   Links: Star's website Star on Instagram Previous episode: Can Your Genes Predict Response to MDMA Therapy? with Dr. Dave Rabin MD, PhD Previous episode: Warning Signs When Selecting a Psychedelic Facilitator with Juliana Mulligan Previous episode: How to Choose a Psychedelic Facilitator or Retreat Center with Joël Brierre My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies by Resmaa Menakem SHINE Support website Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui

Season 1, Episode 35, Release Date: 6-23-2024 Leslie Petruk and Parenting Through the Eyes of a Child   Leslie is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and Director at the Stone Center for Counseling & Leadership, as well as a Clinical Supervisor. Find out more about the Stone Center here: www. thestonecenternc.com Leslie has expertise working with children, individuals, couples and families. She is an author, IFS trainer, presenter and therapist. She has written two chapters of Jenna Riemersma's book, "Altogether Us."   This is a special epsidoe, because Leslie was also my first IFS teacher, in my Level one training. I couldn't have asked for a better teacher :) We nerded out a little about poetry, and here are some of our favorite poets-- Rumi, Nikita Gill, N. Scott Momaday, Jeff Foster, David Whyte, John O'Donohue, and Matt Licata.   Here is some of the transcript that I wanted to highlight:   David. Leslie, how can we use sandtrays in our practice? Leslie. This is a way to help dive into unconscious realm with clients. I like to give clients choice, and allow them to pick objects. They create something, without relying on their "thinking brain." In a way, it is like their parts are being laid out in front of them.  David. Some people might have diffculty when given too much choice and freedom. This might even feel threatening. How do you handle this situation? Leslie. I hold the space. I focus on creating a welcoming and trusting space, and I also hold onto the truth that clients know inside what to do. I might reflect what they are doing, and what is happening, as I create this safe container for them. Although it could be more challenging for children with trauma to get started with sandtrays, once they are able to be part of this process, they tend to get lost in the sandtrays.   David. When you write about parenting skills, how do you differentiate between helping someone have good parenting skills, with overall good relationship and communication skills? Leslie. That is a good question, because healthy attachment applies to any relationship. I remember one time after I did an incredible piece of work with my IFS therapist. I found that I was so present to my children afterwards, and it was a very dramatic shift that had never happened in quite the same way before. I wanted to share this with every parent!   David. We have so much power over our children's lives. In some ways, they are all they really know. Leslie. As my child left for college, I worried if I had given her enough to be successful. Launching children is so hard, in many different ways. But, it is also a beautiful process.   Leslie. My hope with working with parents is to help them have clarity of their parts, and to understand their agendas.  David. It seems important to put our children's needs first.   Leslie. I think it is all about balance. If we are not there for ourselves, we can't be our best selves for our parents. We need to care for our needs-- so we can give our children guidance and a safe place.  David. I feel like as parents we want to helop our children be self-led. Leslie. Yes, and at the same tie, children are naturally filled with joy and curiosity. David. Basically, life is a sandbox for children. Leslie. The biggest message I would want to give to others is to have self-compassion. There is always something you can feel guilty about as a parent. Guilt can be a motivator to make a repair. But, it is not helpful to use this guilt as a bat to beat ourselves up with.  Being able to repair with ourselves as well as our children is so important.   Leslie shared that when we are activated, it is a reminder for us to get curious!

Sly Sarkisova (he/they) is a Toronto based queer and nonbinary trans activist, writer andpsychotherapist. He is an early trailblazer in nonbinary trans health advocacy, and is currently workingon his PhD.Sly spent his 20s in the early 2000s creating language and legitimacy for nonbinary identification inVancouver and Toronto, when no one recognized our identities. In 2009-2013, he wrote over 200 pageson his blog The Space In Between, theorizing and creating space for transmasculine folks to claimbutch/female, nonbinary, and trans identities at once to embrace identities which our communities andthe medical establishment tried to control and extinguish. For the bulk of the past two decades Sly hascreated space for our communities to heal, and to have appropriate mental health care helping usunderstand and reclaim our identities in all their forms from systems of oppression. In his privatepractice, as a Clinical Supervisor and Consultant, Sly has spent the past decade training healthcare andmental health care professionals across disciplines to see the validity, gain knowledge, skills andawareness of our diverse gender identities. Welcome to this episode of SelfKind with Erica Webb (that's me!) where I'm chatting with guest Sam Sellers about religious trauma.Sam, a queer religious trauma therapist and clinical supervisor, shares with us her personal story around experiencing religious trauma and how she has navigated the impact of that on her life and identity. Within this conversation is a discussion around the importance of questioning and understanding one's beliefs, the challenges of navigating personal identity and trauma, and the ongoing process of fostering self-trust. About Sam:Sam is a Registered Therapist and Clinical Supervisor, extending her expertise worldwide through online platforms, except for the US & Canada. Specialising in religious trauma, faith deconstruction, and supporting the LGBTQIA+ community, she passionately champions human rights and advocates for marginalised voices. She shares her therapy space with Naya, her intuitive and sweet Cavoodle, who often joins her in sessions. Beyond her therapeutic role, she embraces her identity as a wife, fur mama, and friend, embodying the essence of compassion and empathy. As a spirituality seeker and trashy TV aficionado, she brings a unique blend of warmth, relatability, and humour to her practice, believing wholeheartedly in the power of laughter for healing. Proudly part of the LGBTQIA+ community herself, she understands firsthand the importance of creating affirming spaces where everyone's story can be heard. Additionally, she hosts two podcasts, "Inside the Therapy Room" and "Beyond the Surface" where she continues her mission of amplifying voices and stories, demystifying therapy and fostering understanding. She recently launched her eBook, ‘A Shattered Sanctuary: From Fellowship to Freedom'; which is her own story of loving and leaving the church interwoven into her Queerness. Her mission is clear: to provide solace and support to those grappling with religious trauma and to empower individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community to reclaim their narratives and live authentically. Connect with Sam: Website – www.anchoredcounsellingservices.com.auInstagram – https://www.instagram.com/anchoredcounsellingservices/Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/anchoredcounsellingservicesTikTok – https://www.tiktok.com/@anchoredcounselling?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pcLinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/anchoredcounsellingservices/ Sam's podcasts:Inside The Therapy Room – https://inside-the-therapy-room.captivate.fm/Beyond the Surface – https://beyond-the-surface.captivate.fm/Share your thoughts with me over on Instagram or via my website.
