POPULARITY
There's a fair bit about Michelle Brasier's life that doesn't seem that funny. She lost her Dad, then her brother, then was told she had a 97% chance of her own life being cut short by cancer too. Yet she's still finding humour, choosing optimism and singing just about any chance she gets. And like, she's a very funny and talented comedian (and writer, and actor) - so yeah, there's still plenty of laughs still around. In this very special live episode, recorded at the Factory Theatre in Marrickville, celebrating the launch of Michelle's memoir 'My Brother’s Ashes Are In A Sandwich Bag' (named one of Apple’s Best Books of 2024 and first in the list of Audible’s Top Ten Memoirs of the year 2024), Michelle discusses how she lives her life and chooses to see the world, her creative practice, and honoring people who aren't there anymore, even if they're past versions of yourself. Also some very raunchy teenage cast parties. The Queen's Gambit editor Michelle Tesoro ACE (House of Cards, When They See Us) first collaborated with writer/director Scott Frank in 2017 for his series, Godless. In fact, The Queen's Gambit also reunites Michelle with fellow Godless alums Wylie Stateman (sound designer) and Steven Meizler (cinematographer). The fusion of their collective talents has resulted in a critically acclaimed series that stormed its way into the Top 10 on Netflix. The Queen’s Gambit is adapted from the Walter Tevis novel of the same name, released back in 1983. It follows the journey of Beth Harmon, a young girl who was orphaned at the tender age of nine. While awaiting adoption at the orphanage, she develops a passion for chess and an addiction to tranquilizers; both tapping into an inner genius that propelled her into the world of competitive chess as a teen and then young adult. Thanks in large part to Michelle's graceful sense of storytelling, this drama unfolds with brilliantly balanced pacing, while maximizing Frank's fantastic writing and a career making performance from actor, Anya Taylor-Joy. In this episode of The Rough Cut, Michelle talks with us about: compressing time while keeping the emotional beats developing discrete visual styles for the different chess matches cutting dialogue that's purposefully hard to hear working within a "oner" Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs See Michelle's guided Timeline Tour on YouTube See the latest Special Offers for Avid Media Composer Learn Avid for free with Media Composer | First Subscribe to Media Composer | Ultimate and get the best Avid has to offer Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode

The fabulous @eleytherius. You may know her as Dr Johnston, as a long term LIFTL contributor, as a Mega-FOAM performer, as a some-time feline choreographer or as a Fabulous Female of FOAM®. She sings, she dances and she writes books. She is a creative powerhouse. She is an educator extraordinaire. But we’re not going to talk about that. We’re going to talk about Dustfall; a new novel by someone who you can relate to, somewhat works in critical care, someone that has not much more time to spare than you do. Michelle has written a book. It took years. Of course she can write, I am just learning. Check her blog here; http://michellejohnston.com.au/category/dustfall/ It would have to be a labour of love? It was. Love of words. Love of reading. Love of the classics. As Michelle puts it; “I like words and they like me.” Where does a story like this start? It starts, like so many things do, near Port Hedland. In the Pilbara. In Western Australia. In a part of Australia that most Australians will never see. It’s out there, right out there. It starts in Wittenoom. Covered in blue asbestos, dead but still dangerous. Mining happens in dangerous places. Physically and metaphysically. For Dr Johnston, there was not so much writing as there was re-writing, submitting, waiting and getting rejected. Bad feedback. Good feedback. Even when people liked it they told her to re-write it. And here there is a parallel with medicine. Feedback. Feedback. And more feedback. Feedback is sometimes hard but it is something that can make you better. How many medical people do you know that have written a novel, a work of fiction? Not many. Now you know one more. Dustfall by Michelle Johnston. She didn’t want to push it so I will. Find the book here; https://uwap.uwa.edu.au/products/dustfall Go and listen to her speak about it, there will be book launches, promotional tours, lectures and a brand new pen. See Michelle speak; https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/words-with-wine-michelle-johnston-dustfall-tickets-42452631965 This was recorded at SMACC in Berlin. We had just heard the fantastic talk by Annet Alenyo ( @aalenyo) about #UBUNTU which was a special moment. Have a look for that talk when it is available and please, please, please consider supporting a delegate through @Supadel and maybe help a talented young doctor or nurse attend a fantastic event like #dasSMACC was and like #BadEMfest2018. Read more at www.BadEM.co.za Then read a novel. Big thanks to Tired Lion, Perth Post-Punk Feminist Combo getting us moving with their break out hit I dont think you like me, chosen to introduce Dr Johnston because of the lyrics, the provenance and presence of Sophie Hopes. If your not Australian you’ve probably never heard her before. Now you have. Go and get some Tired Lion on iTunes. Big thanks also to Lloyd Cole for a little clip of the mid-80’s classic Brand New Friend of his second album, chosen for the lyric “am I asking oh for so much, i’m not asking to be understood” but also because the tune jumped into my mind and refused to leave for three days after Michelle used the phrase “Brand New Pen”. You surely have some Lloyd? If not, iTunes again.

Find Michelle on Facebook HERE. Episode 89 Transcription On today’s episode, I’m interviewing Michelle Hoover, a blogger who wants to talk all about how you can powerfully heal from Hashimoto’s. Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Today I’m joined by the most lovely Michelle Hoover. We’re going to talk about healing Hashimoto’s. and to tell you really quickly before I let Michelle introduce herself more in depth, I’ll tell you a little bit more about her. {laughs} I’ll tell you more about herself. See Michelle, this is one of those moments where if I did edit my podcast, I probably would have edited that part out {laughing}. Michelle Hoover: {laughs} Cassy Joy: Oh anyways. I just told her that unedited I feel like is just more fun. Ok, so more about Michelle. After living the first 17 years of her life feeling chronically unwell, Michelle Hoover was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, which is an autoimmune disease that attacks the thyroid and affects weight, energy, mood, hormones, and pretty much just about everything else you can think of. She spent her early college years medicated and in a fog, until she discovered the autoimmune-gut connection, and everything changed after that point. After her diet changed, lifestyle, and targeting her gut health, she lives a drastically different life, free of debilitating Hashimoto’s and digestive symptoms. Michelle works one on one as a nutritional therapy practitioner; an NTP, and blogs about gut healing, living with Hashimoto’s, and autoimmune friendly paleo recipes at her blog, www.UnboundWellness.com. This January, she is releasing the 30-day gut healing diet plan and guide, which is designed to lead you on your own gut healing journey, just like she did to address her Hashimoto’s. Welcome to the show, Michelle! Michelle Hoover: Thank you so much, Cassy. I’m so excited to be here. Cassy Joy: Oh, I’m so excited to have you here. When Michelle emailed me and told me a little bit about herself, I really felt compelled to invite her immediately onto the show, because we’ve never; or have not ever, in the last 80-plus episodes, covered Hashimoto’s specifically. And I know it is probably one of the most prevalent autoimmune diseases afflicting more folks than any other, and I really wanted to bring you on because you have such a beautiful success story, you’ve got such a really good head on your shoulders and perspective, and I wanted folks to be able to hear from your firsthand how you’ve really confronted things head first. But yeah welcome to the show! Is there anything that I missed in your bio that you’d like to share in additional? In addition to that? {laughs} Michelle Hoover: {laughs} I think those are the things. If you hear any tiny pony galloping in the background it’s my cat, Stinky. Cassy Joy: {gasp} Cat Stinky! I was really hoping you were going to say, “If you hear any tiny pony galloping, it’s my tiny pony.” {laughs} Michelle Hoover: {laughs} He sounds like a tiny pony. He like gallops; it’s weird. So if you hear that, it’s my cat. {laughs} Cassy Joy: Ohh, Stinky, that’s so cute. If you hear a Clydesdale galloping, it’s my dog Gus. {laughing} The opposite of tiny pony. He’s a big pony {laughs}. Oh man. Well this is great. I’m really excited to chat with you. So can you share a little bit more about; you were diagnosed at 17. Michelle Hoover: Yeah.
Unlike the majority of our guests on Honey, Jen and Louis are NOT REAL! They are characters improvised in the moment by the extremely talented and hilarious Peter Banifaz and Michelle Thompson. Lou and Jen are FASCINATING people - they’re a youth group leader and a dog walker, former scooter owners, and swingers. They are AMAZINGLY forthcoming about their sex life. Their big fight stems from Jen saying the wrong name during a certain sex act. Lou and Jen are just a reminder that relationships are incredibly complex, and when you can get all the moving parts to click into place, it can be really magical. That may or may not be the case for the two of them. See Peter perform at UCB: http://ucbcomedy.com See Michelle’s weekly improv show Purgatory: http://www.clubhouseimprov.com
