"The travel journey is always an interesting paradox. To spend time navigating, being, seeing, collecting and contemplating. And haphazardly wondering about the next step. Yet, to not get carried away, or in front of yourself that you miss the opportunity that is right under your nose. I like sitting here observing the morning pursuits, the cars zooming in and out of the piazza, the deliveries being made. The locals in animated conversation, the tourist stalls being uncovered. It is good sitting with the hum of the place, no need to race anywhere. The breeze blows through the open door and I write a few more thoughts in my journal. I pack up my books and my water bottle and wander out to the street. Shortly after arriving, he meets Hugo, a hospital scientist and a man almost as lost as Marick himself, who is working in a forgotten lab, deep in the subterranean realms of the hospital. Hugo is convinced that the bacteria he uses for protein production have – unbelievably – begun to produce gold. Is it alchemy, evolution, a hoax or even … possibly … a miracle? In the meantime, Christmas is approaching, the number of homeless outside the hospital is increasing, the Director of Operational Services is pressing Marick about his weekly KPIs, you can't buy chocolate in the hospital shop anymore, and Marick keeps waking with nightmares at 4 am every night. If ever a miracle was needed, it's now."

Dr. Michelle K. Johnston has life-long experience in embracing and accessing the power of connections. Growing up as a “corporate brat,” Michelle's family moved every few years. Her father's job at General Motors required relocation as his career advanced. He promoted their moves as adventures. She always found a way to fit in, and skilled at being the new kid.  As she began her professional career, however, Michelle's methods for ‘fitting in' did not work as well for her. She realized that she had to distinguish herself, rather than blend in, to be seen as valuable in the professional marketplace. Michelle discovered that she needed to develop different ways to make meaningful connections to be effective and grow professionally. She worked for a consulting firm right out of graduate school, traveling to companies to teach meeting management, communication, presentation skills, and team building. Michelle also taught an evening business communication class at Loyola University New Orleans, close to home. Being newly married, she welcomed the opportunity to travel less when the Dean offered her a full-time teaching role in the business school. Today, Michelle is a management professor, executive coach, and leadership expert who serves as the Gaston Chair of Business at Loyola University New Orleans. She is a celebrated keynote speaker presenting at conferences and events nationwide.  Her book, The Seismic Shift in Leadership: How to Thrive in a New Era of Connection, details the need for leaders to shift from a command and control leadership style to one that focuses on connection. She affirms that connection drives long-lasting results, enabling leaders to more effectively connect with their teams to achieve personal and professional goals. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, follow Michelle's journey and work: Michelle earned her Ph.D. in Communication at Louisiana State University. Her grandfather, a professor at Georgetown, wrote her letters to persuade her to pursue a doctoral degree. In this episode of the Global Salesleader podcast I'm speaking with Dr. Michelle K. She is an award-winning professor studying leadership and business communication, and her research has shown a clear link between a team's effective communication and its positive financial performance. Michelle Johnson is an executive coach, professional management professor and author who discussed the importance of a business mindset. She believes that the traditional approach of just focusing on bottom line results is no longer enough. She believes that leaders need to adapt to the new world of work and higher expectations when it comes to culture, climate, and environment within a business. She discussed her research and interviews on how leaders and humans can adapt. She also mentioned that she has seen good and bad culture within companies during her 14 years in corporate before she started her own business.  The conversation discussed the seismic shift in the business world over the past few decades, particularly in relation to gender and culture. It was suggested that millennials have had a major influence on this change, as have women in leadership roles. An example was provided of a 2004-2005 executive mentor program, which aimed to connect fresh, wide-eyed business students with business leaders in order to orient them to the world of business opportunities and to keep them in the New Orleans area. The executives reported that the new generation of workers was vastly different. Thus, this conversation highlighted the importance of millennials and women in leadership roles in driving the change in the business world.  The conversation discussed the cultural shift within the workplace, brought on by millennials and their push for work-life balance that their parents' generation did not have. The speaker shared a story of her father who worked for General Motors and moved around every two years due to corporate promotions. The speaker then discussed Jenny Blumenthal, a high-level leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers who quit her job during the pandemic due to the inability to balance her work and family responsibilities. The speaker then raised the point that if companies do not listen to the push for work-life balance, their workforce will be disengaged and their bottom line will suffer. The conversation concluded with the speaker questioning what the alternative would be if companies do not listen.Timestamps0:02:47Interview with Michelle Johnson: Exploring the Seismic Shift in Leadership and Business Mindset0:04:56Heading: Examining the Seismic Shift in Business Culture Over the Last Century0:06:43Discussion on Work-Life Balance in the Modern Workplace0:10:42Exploring Work-Life Balance with a Millennial Corporate Brat0:15:30Heading: "The Power of Owning Your Story: An Executive Coach's Journey to Authenticity"0:17:59"The Benefits of Being Authentic and EmoSupport the showDo you want to be a guest on multiple podcasts as a service go to:www.podcastintroduction.comFind more details about the podcast and my coaching business on:www.absolutebusinessmindset.comDo you want to be a podcaster? In this episode Judith Germain speaks to Michelle Johnston about the Seismic Shift in Leadership towards a relationship based style. They discuss why leaders that insist on using a command and control style of leadership aren't trusted by others. Judith explains that organisations only succeed on the goodwill of their employees and they must keep this subtle balance in check. Michelle shares a number of examples that really bring the seismic change to life. Judith queries whether the shift is in the leader and the leadership is how this is demonstrated for others. Connection really matters and Judith ponders whether leaders are reacting to being institutionalised by the organisation. Listen to this fun conversation to understand why curating your professional self is no longer possible and what Executive teams must do to connect and lead their organisation. Judith talks about the effect of all the generations working from home together during covid and how that affected leadership styles and expectations. Michelle's first book, The Seismic Shift in Leadership, is an Amazon bestseller, which details the need for leaders to shift from command and control to connection to achieve long-lasting results. She was recently named one of the most influential New Orleanians, a top 500 business leader, and a Woman of the Year by CityBusiness. It's also about having the right leadership capability and being able to execute on your ideas and plans. The consequences of not having the right level of influence as a leader can be significant. In this instalment of the Training Unleashed podcast, host Evan Hackel sat down with Dr. Michelle K. Johnston to discuss the shift in leadership style from a “command and control” style to one based on building connections with yourself, your style of communication and your organization.  What Is the shift in Leadership that Michelle Has Identified? Michelle noticed this change in leadership style when she realized that executives who were still using a “command and control” style were getting pushed out of organizations and were no longer valued. The New Leadership Is About Connection, Connection, Connection Michelle's research found that leaders who were getting pushed out had failed to establish a deep connection with the people on their teams. Their teams didn't trust them. Their teams thought they were inauthentic, sometimes fake. They wondered, who is this person? They couldn't tell because their leader was putting on a professional act by trying to look like what a leader should be. And she saw that today's most effective leaders are all about connection. Historically, leaders communicated with their employees in a transactional and hierarchical manner. However, these tactics no longer work in today's environment. The traditional, command-and-control leadership style is no longer as effective. What leadership techniques do effective leaders employ in the modern business and working environment? In this episode, Doug and Greg talk with Michelle Johnston, a management professor, executive coach, and leadership expert who serves as the Gaston Chair of Business at Loyola University New Orleans. Author of “The Seismic Shift in Leadership,” Michelle emphasizes the need for leaders to shift from a command-and-control leadership style to one focused on connection. There are a few famous families in New Orleans. The Nevilles. The Mannings. The Marsalis family. The Batistes. The Brennans. I could name more, and you can probably think of others too. Like mine, your list of names is likely going to be families of sports figures, musicians or restaurateurs. There are also families of business people here in New Orleans. Families that are every bit as dynastic as these other names. Like, for example, the Neill family. Hair In 1946, Harriet and Abner Neill started up the Magnolia Beauty Supply company. They manufactured and sold hair care products to hundreds of salons. They stayed in business for a couple of generations, over the years becoming bigger and more successful. Then, in 1991 they expanded into retail, and opened their first hair salon, in Hammond. That one salon, which they called Paris Parker, is now 8 salons that are called Paris Parker Salon & Spa. Employing over 200 people, they're a division of the Neill Corporation and are co—owned by Executive Director, Garrison Neill. Getting Ahead Growing up in a family where people are talking about business around the dinner table can be a distinct advantage for anyone going into business. But you can only absorb so much over a meal. And even if you go to business school, when it comes to actually running a business and making decisions that affect hundreds or thousands of other people, that's a whole other set of skills. Those skills – including communication, management, and leadership – are an absolute must to master. And what's interesting about them is, you can't learn them once and know everything. As times change, so do the ways you run a company. Michelle Johnston keeps corporate executives abreast of those changes. Michelle is an executive coach for the leaders of companies as diverse as Ochsner, Pfizer, The City of New Orleans, JP Morgan Chase, and many more. She's also a professor of business at Loyola University in New Orleans, and the author of a book about keeping current in business, called “The Seismic Shift In Leadership: how to thrive in a new era of connection.” There's no doubt that age makes you wiser. As time passes, you learn from your mistakes. If you're really wise, you reach the conclusion that you'll never stop learning. But what comes along with that wisdom is the corresponding realization that you'll also never stop making mistakes. The best you can do is to minimize your inevitable errors of judgement. And one of the ways you can do that in business - the same as in the rest of your life – is by learning to listen. Michelle's impressive list of clients, students, and readers of her writing are all smart enough to listen to her. And Garrison has learned from the generations of family members ahead of him and is continuing to shape the family business in response to the changing needs of both clients and employees. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at NOLA Pizza in the NOLA Brewing Taproom.
