TV has been pretty quiet of late. That is, of course, unless you're a Wimbledon or Football fan. However, Luke, Matt and Dawn are back to review 4 new shows available on streaming Platforms and ITV2. Firstly, one of the best shows of the decade, The Bear, returns for its fourth season. It's fair to say that season 3 received a lukewarm response from critics and fans alike. Without spoiling it, season 4 is a huge improvement and gives fans who love what The Bear does well exactly what they want and perhaps more. Secondly, fresh from the huge success of The Queen's Gambit, writer Scott Frank is back with Netflix adapting the Danish novel Department Q and relocating the characters to Scotland for what becomes a gripping Slow Horses and Nordic Noir hybrid. Next, Apple TV+ has a 9-part crime thriller Smoke, which sees two fire investigators looking into two arsonists. Finally, it's a rare trip for us to ITV2, for comedy Transaction about a trans woman who is called upon to work in a supermarket who suffer a PR nightmare. Then, what is quickly becoming the best part of the pod, our 3 strikes you are out quiz, where Dawn and Luke go head-to-head in naming Netflix Original Series.

Carlos Rafael Rivera (The Queen's Gambit, Hacks) is one of the few composers my mom has asked me about, so I'm extra excited to have him join the show! Carlos's latest project is Department Q, his fourth series with writer-director Scott Frank (joining Godless, The Queen's Gambit, and Monsieur Spade, as well as the film A Walk Among The Tombstones). Normally this is where I'd say something like "unsurprisingly, we spend most of our time talking about that score", but that's not the case here. Instead, we spend most of the interview dancing around Department Q, whether it be talking about his career working with Scott Frank (going back to when he taught Scott guitar in the early 2000s), the changing nature of friendships as you age, or 80s thrash. Ultimately everything goes back to Department Q, but not everything is about Department Q. Carlos's score, and much of his other music, is available on all major platforms. Department Q is currently on Netflix. You can find out more about Carlos on his website.

Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 2002 dystopian cyberpunk action thriller MINORITY REPORT – directed by Steven Spielberg; written by Scott Frank & Jon Cohen; based on the short-story by Philip K. Dick; starring Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, Max von Sydow, and Neal McDonough.John works with the PreCrime police which stop crimes before they take place, with the help of three “PreCogs” who can foresee crimes. Events ensue when John finds himself framed for a future murder.Minority Report was a sci-fi action thriller that paired the biggest star in Hollywood (Tom Cruise) versus the newly anointed next biggest star (Colin Farrell) in a future dystopian world in which murders can be stopped before they happen. It was the rare Summer blockbuster tentpole cyberpunk movie. The film is one of Spielberg's best and darkest entries, as it explores identity politics, ethical quandaries, and the limits of humanity's grasp on reality. So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. You know what time it is! For 17 years and counting, he continues to run his own professional acting class in New York and Los Angeles, strictly through word of mouth. On this episode, he tells the story of how he came to a level of dedication similar to what athletics required, which he now passes on to his students. He talks about the difference between the visceral and the intellectual; the importance of finding and working with good actors that you can learn from; why it all comes down to focus, specificity, and commitment. When the film first came out, Nostalgia Critic liked it but didn't love it. Is it possible he might have missed something the first time around? Let's take another look at Logan. Logan is a 2017 American superhero film starring Hugh Jackman as the titular character. It is the tenth film in the X-Men film series, the third and final installment in the Wolverine trilogy, following X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and The Wolverine (2013), and a standalone sequel to X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). The film, which takes inspiration from the "Old Man Logan" comics storyline by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, follows an aged Wolverine and an extremely ill Charles Xavier who must defend a young mutant named Laura from the Reavers led by Donald Pierce and Zander Rice. The film is produced by 20th Century Fox, Marvel Entertainment, TSG Entertainment and The Donners' Company, and distributed by 20th Century Fox. It is directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Green and Scott Frank from a story by Mangold. In addition to Jackman, the film also stars Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, and introduces Dafne Keen in her film debut as Laura. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The second-best movie based on an Elmore Leonard novel, Out of Sight (1998) does what Netflix and other platforms try to do all the time: throw a bunch of stars together in an effort to increase the quality of the “content.” But those half-assed efforts never come close to Out of Sight, which has a roster of A-list actors, a terrific screenplay based on quality source material, a great score, and a director who makes us feel as cool as his characters. Like Mozart, Steven Soderbergh makes complicated artistic maneuvers look effortless–and like Elmore Leonard, Soderbergh knows the difference between good bad guys and bad bad guys. fWotD Episode 2589: Saving Private Ryan Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Thursday, 6 June 2024 is Saving Private Ryan.Saving Private Ryan is a 1998 American epic war film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Robert Rodat. Set in 1944 in France during World War II, it follows a group of soldiers, led by Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks), on their mission to locate Private James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon) and bring him home safely after his three brothers have been killed in action. The cast also includes Edward Burns, Tom Sizemore, Barry Pepper, Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel, Adam Goldberg, and Jeremy Davies.Inspired by the books of Stephen E. Ambrose and accounts of casualties among members of a single family such as the Niland brothers, Rodat drafted the script and Paramount Pictures hired him to finish the writing. The project came to the attention of Hanks and Spielberg, whose previous successes secured the project's development. Spielberg wanted to make Saving Private Ryan as authentic as possible, and hired Frank Darabont and Scott Frank to perform uncredited rewrites based on research and interviews with veterans. The main cast went through a week-long boot camp to understand the soldier experience. Filming took place from June to September 1997, on a $65–$70 million budget, almost entirely on location in England and Ireland. The opening Omaha Beach battle was the most demanding scene, costing $12 million to film over four weeks with 1,500 extras.Saving Private Ryan became one of the year's most successful films, earning critical acclaim for its graphic portrayal of combat. WWII veterans described the combat scenes as the most realistic portrayal of their own experiences; some were unable to watch it due to their traumatic memories. The film earned $481.8 million, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 1998, and went on to win many accolades, including Golden Globe, Academy, BAFTA, and Saturn awards.Saving Private Ryan is considered one of the greatest films ever made. Its battle scene filming techniques impacted many subsequent war, action, and superhero films, and numerous directors have cited Saving Private Ryan as an influence. It is credited with helping renew interest in WWII at the turn of the century, inspiring other films, television shows, and video games set during the war. In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:04 UTC on Thursday, 6 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Saving Private Ryan on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Joanna Standard.

Barry Sonnenfeld and Scott Frank's adaptation of Elmore Leonard's 1990 crime novel 'Get Shorty' was the 2nd film that John Travolta made after returning to top stardom with a bang in Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction'. This vibe-y, enjoyable, smartly-written and brilliantly-acted mid-90's example of the $20-30 million-dollar studio movie that now seems like a vestige of another time and place.

Grammy- and two-time Emmy-winning composer Carlos Rafael Rivera has spent the last decade building moody, complex musical worlds around complicated characters. His earliest prominent work was with regular collaborator Scott Frank on films like A Walk Among the Tombstones, and the Netflix miniseries Godless. But it was his mercurial work on Frank's miniseries The Queen's Gambit that earned Rivera breakout status. Since then, he's worked on a host of films and series both with Frank and elsewhere: Apple's Lessons in Chemistry, HBO's Hacks. But his two most recent scores, and some of his best, have him dealing with different ends of the prestige-crime-drama ecosystem. Take Netflix's Griselda, in which an unrecognizable Sofia Vergara climbs her way to the top of Miami's drug trade as the real-life Cocaine Godmother; scored like an opera, Rivera's sound is full of harpsichord, lone voices, big breathy melodramatic moments. On the other side of the Atlantic lies AMC's stellar miniseries Monsieur Spade, in which Clive Owen plays an older Sam Spade solving a mystery while spending his retirement in rural France after World War II. There, the usual noir trappings are leavened by a distinct sense of melancholy, lonely guitar strains underlining the postwar fragility of its French setting. This week, I'm thrilled to have Rivera on to talk about these shows and so much more, from his musical journey with the guitar to his philosophies on which perspective to score from. It's a brilliant chat (maybe one of the best this podcast has ever enjoyed), and I hope you enjoy. You can find Carlos Rafael Rivera at his official website here. Griselda is currently streaming on Netflix, and Monsieur Spade runs weekly on AMC and AMC+. You can also stream each soundtrack at your music service of choice.

Clearly that pitch worked as Cooper entrusted Michelle with the editorial duties for his much-anticipated biopic. MAESTRO chronicles the fearless love story and complicated lifelong relationship between music legend Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein. Scott Frank is a talented, Oscar-nominated director and screenwriter with a distinctive career and many worthwhile credits. But mainly we just wanted to do Out of Sight. A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES (2014, Scott Frank) THE LOOKOUT (2007, Scott Frank) OUT OF SIGHT (1998, Steven Soderbergh)
Thirty years ago we saw the release of this mystery thriller featuring three promising stars (Alec Baldwin, Nicole Kidman, Bill Pullman), co-written by two promising screenwriters (Aaron Sorkin, Scott Frank), and helmed by one accomplished director (Harold Becker - Sea of Love, Taps). And THE one scene which most people remember from it happens to feature one of the stars referring to himself/herself as God....guess who that was? :) The plot revolves around a sleepy New England school for young women where students are getting murdered but wait there's more! Also co-starring Bebe Neuwirth, George C. Scott, Tobin Bell, and Anne Bancroft.....it's time to revisit one of THE nuttier thrillers of the '90's! We're celebrating the 25th anniversary of one of director Steven Soderbergh's most underrated films, Out of Sight, starring George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, Dennis Farina, Steve Zahn, Catherine Keener, and Albert Brooks. Written by Scott Frank, the film is adapted from Elmore Leonard's 1996 novel of the same name and follows a career bank robber that breaks of out jail only to share a moment of mutual attraction with a U.S. Marshal he has kidnapped. Joining the team for this episode is JC of @mercwiththemovies on Instagram, who cites this as his favorite Soderbergh film. The trio get into the film's performances, particularly the combustible chemistry between Clooney and Lopez, the film's direction and visual style, how the movie helped propel Clooeny, Lopez and Soderbergh to new heights and look into why the film underperformed at the box office at the time of its release.
Our hosting switcheroo continues as Joe helms a full analysis and fix of 2016's Assassin's Creed, Justin Kurzel and Michael Fassbender's attempt to adapt the hit video game franchise to the silver screen. It didn't win any Razzies, but Jack got to do Caligula. In this 1st part, we breakdown what did and didn't work about the film, explore the connections between the film and games and briefly look into the series' history, and look into what some critics had to say. Jack laments his lack of virtual parkour skills, Joe gives a scattered overview of the games, and take a moment to laugh about cringeworthy presidential announcements. Join us as we explore what could have been a hit film series, where nothing is real and everything is permitted (as long as its PG-13, I guess). CW: Brief mention of the alleged sexual misconduct and misogynist culture within Ubisoft, violence, Christopher Columbus, a reminder that the Uwe Boll adaptation of Bloodrayne exists.
