As part of our Bay Area Legends series, we talk with Kingston – who grew up working in her parent's Stockton laundry business and was an integral part of Berkeley's counterculture movement – about her genre-defying work. And we check in with contemporary authors about Kingston's lasting influence on their craft and the evolution of immigrant narratives in American literature. Guests: Vanessa Hua, author, Forbidden City; Hua's previous books include “A River of Stars”; former columnist, San Francisco Chronicle Aimee Phan, author, "The Reeducation of Cherry Truong"; associate professor of writing and literature, California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Myth has an interesting and complex relationship to history. Myth is part of the historical record of our species, and part of the history of a given people. And myth shapes history. Myth gives rise to the beliefs and point of view that create our world, determine the present, and influence the future. This blending of myth and history can lead to important revelations and new understanding, and it can create blind spots. I started thinking about this after watching the movie "The Woman King," inspired by the warrior women of Dahomey, the Agojie. Visiting Europeans called these women "Amazons." I talk about the movie (no spoilers), Amazons, and some of the twists and turns of myth and history. This episode gestated with me a while and I learned a few things putting it together for you. I hope it gives you food for thought and enhances your appreciation of the movie (which I encourage you to see:)).Support the showEmail Catherine at drcsvehla@mythicmojo.comPost a positive review on apple podcasts! I remember Chris as a thoughtful person who was often deep in thought when she was a student. The underground LGBTQIA club, Haven, was fairly new, and the school was now fully aware of its existence and activities. Chris was part of the first group of leaders, along with Liz Cirelli, to start openly challenging the school's hateful policies and advocating for the rights of queer students. This led to the school doing the unthinkable to Chris, which made crystal clear the values of evangelical culture. Thankfully, Chris is living a great life today, advocating for queer youth, and raising a family of her own. Encouraged to create recipes without dairy and meat when her husband's research pointed to the impact of diet on reversing disease, Ann Esselstyn began feeding her family creative, plant-based meals more than thirty years ago. She and her daughter, Jane Esselstyn, are bolts of energy from the same strike of lightning and have become fierce, big-spirited advocates for a plant-based lifestyle, reaching hundreds of thousands of fans through their previous books and their popular YouTube channel. At eighty-six and fifty-six, respectively, Ann and Jane are pictures of ageless health and vibrancy and spend their days hiking, doing yoga, gardening, cooking, and spreading the message that diet is the key to living a happy, strong, and disease-free life. It's time to live fierce, stay bold, and eat deliciously with my Mom, Ann, and sister, Jane Esselstyn!  That's right, we're celebrating the release of their new book, Be a Plant-Based Woman Warrior, which is out and available now. It's always a party with these two and I'm fortunate to have had the opportunity to be with them in person just a few weeks ago when we were all together at the Esselstyn Family Farm. You know what that means – it can get a little nutty when the three of us are together because that Esselstyn feistiness is ALIVE and WELL! Be a Plant-Based Woman Warrior isn't your typical cookbook. Truly, it's a peek into our family history with stories, photos, quotes, and recipes from three generations of Esselstyns. Mostly, this book pays homage to the people who started it all - my parents - for forging and navigating that undiscovered path of plant-based nutrition at a time when no one understood how vital it was (including me and my siblings). Here we all are decades later and I'm so proud to sit with Jane and Ann and share some of the inspiration and recipes with you today. My Mother has been called the “Julia Child of Plant-Based cooking” and you'll see why after you dig through some of the recipes and photos in this gorgeous book. This truly is a fun and inspiring message of hope for all women to improve their own health so that they remain strong, bold, and fierce in body and mind! (and let's face it – there aren't many people MORE fierce than Jane and Ann!) More About Be a Plant-Based Woman Warrior At eighty-six and fifty-six, respectively, Ann and Jane are pictures of ageless health and vibrancy and spend their days hiking, doing yoga, gardening, cooking, and spreading the message that diet is the key to living a happy, strong, and disease-free life. In this episode of Change It Up Radio, Dr. Rayna Gangi joins me to talk about women in the military, navigating Veteran Affairs, veteran suicide prevention, and how we can all do more to honor veterans for their service.   My guest today, Dr. Rayna Gangi, trained as a radio communication engineer and was ready to be one of only a handful of Women Marines deployed to Vietnam. Two days before her embarkment, multiple vaccines paralyzed her from the waist down, and she spent the next several months in the hospital. Rayna fought her way back to mobility and was honorably discharged in 1971.   Through her personal experience, Rayna became more aware of other veterans with disabilities when she approached the VA after her disability had returned and she was no longer able to work. Her experience with the VA was not unlike many who have reached out for help, but the most impactful awareness was for the number of veteran suicides, and the numbers were staggering.   Rayna has since began counseling veterans suffering with PTSD pro bono. She has been focused on prevention and education so that others can help veterans and so veterans can be honored as they should be for their service.   Today, Rayna joins me to talk about the difficulties she faced as a woman navigating the military after enlisting in the U.S. Marines in 1968 during the height of the Vietnam War, sharing the way that she and other women were treated in comparison to their male counterparts. Rayna also shares her struggles with dealing with the VA for disability compensation, and her mission to help prevent and put an end to veteran suicide.   To Learn More About the Show, Visit: www.ChangeItUpRadio.com

My husband Mike was a soldier. He gave his country his 19th year of life while serving in Vietnam in the Marines as a forward artillery observer. His job was to move ahead of the troops into enemy territory. When he spotted the enemy, he was to call in the artillery. Oh my. I've always connected Mike's assignment on the battlefield to our life assignment as women today. Mike has never talked much about his days in Vietnam, he's just never been able to share many of the details about what he saw there. But I've seen enough of his heart to know that my husband was changed forever by those 13 months on the battlefield. As I was writing this chapter in my book Life Unstuck, I asked Mike what five words would describe his time as a marine.Join me today on Permission to Pause to hear Mike's words.

Women of GenX and younger were all raised with the impossible standard of the "Super Mom". This mythical woman has the housekeeping and dinner creation ability of Donna Reed and is also a beast in the boardroom - shattering glass ceilings on the daily. The standard was set insanely high, and now women are left to struggle with all of the pressures and limitations that come with reality. There are only so many hours in the day, and so much one body can do - and for as far as we have come the bulk of the domestic burden continues to fall on women. Enter Ashley Connell. Ashley was angered by the disenfranchisement of women, the system way they are kept from board rooms with minimization of their professional and domestic contributions, and so much more. Some people get angry and then get over it, Ashley got angry and did something about it. She founded Prowess Project - an organization dedicated to helping women return to the workplace without losing career momentum. In this conversation she goes into what Prowess is and why it's amazing, but also so much more. In this episode we get to spend some time with a true pioneer: entrepreneur, spiritual leader, best-selling author, international advocate and expert in Women's Empowerment and Health and best-selling author Sierra Bender. In her career spanning 3 decades and counting, Sierra's story is as compelling as it is remarkable. Sierra was pronounced dead on Christmas Eve 1995 when she was 32 from an undiagnosed tubular pregnancy of 4 months that caused her to nearly bleed to death. During her time "on the other side", she had a conversation with God and was asked 4 questions that would forever change the course of her life and was shown her path and purpose and from that experience, rose the spirit of a Woman Warrior: a strong-willed, compassionate, and fearless entity. Although she could not give birth to children she gave birth to the 4 Body Fit™ Method. Her 4 Body Fit™ Method became an international movement of women's empowerment workshops and retreats and created the 4 body trend. She has been on the speaking circuit since 1996. The 4 Body Fit™Method has been clinically proven by the Department of Psychology at American University, DC in clinical trials that prove its effectiveness for healing and empowering females of all ages. Sierra's best-selling book, Goddess to the Core and teachings continue to be a catalyst to over millions of women and girls around the globe to reclaim their power. Sierra spearheaded the current trends in the self-help and wellness industries. Her programs created the benchmark in leading institutions Kripalu Center and Omega Institute and universities amongst others. She was the first to address and define empowerment and the lack of it in the Women's Empowerment and Women's Health movement and identify personal is professional. In this episode we tap into so much of Sierra's vast wisdom and experience, including such topics as: - The 4 questions she was asked by God when she died - The 4 Body Fit Method - What is Righteous Anger - How to turn pain into purpose - When it's time to stop sacrificing yourself - Creating boundaries and holding space for others rather than taking on their stuff - Control v. Allowing - Fear v. Faith - Embodying the self and getting grounded - How to be accountable to yourself - Dealing with change and taking on challenges - The 13 Levels of Empowerment for Women Warriors - How Goddess to the Core is a Goddess Warrior "Love isn't just an emotion. It's the most powerful force in the universe grounded by action and responsibility." ~Sierra Bender TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SIERRA PLEASE VISIT: 13 Levels of Empowerment for Women Warriors On Line Training https://sierrabender.com/training-personal/ Website: SierraBender.com IG: Sierra Bender FB Professional : SierraBender https://www.facebook.com/SierraBenderInc Join Private Facebook: Goddess Warrior™ Tribe https://www.facebook.com/groups/763881210626584 THANK YOU SO MUCH!
