Does your brain have a very all-or-nothing way of looking at yourself and your relationships? You either did it perfectly or you're terrible. You're a good friend or a bad friend.Your partner either says the exact right thing or they must not care about you at all.If so - you're not alone! Our brains are actually predisposed to be very black & white in the way they think - preferring things to fit neatly into set categories - leaving very little room for nuance or shades of grey.In today's episode I'm covering:A recent example of my own perfectionist brainHow black & white thinking impacts our relationship with ourselvesHow it impacts our relationships with othersHow it can mess with our expectations and overall enjoyment of a relationshipAnd some easy thought work hacks to take your brain to a more nuanced place!Mentioned in the episodeEmail me about coaching opportunities: Rebecca@rebeccaorecoaching.com
S6 E3: Fostering Engagement in Learning w/UDL expert Allison Posey. In a world of checks and boxes, especially in work and learning, our goal is to have listeners think about what is possible to transform their own lives. The way we engage in all we do is often a choice, but the transformation and level of engagement can be increased when we have appropriate access to the possibilities. In this episode, we are thrilled to be joined by friend and colleague, Allison Posey who is an expert in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and author of: “Engage the Brain: How to Design for Learning that Taps into the Power of Emotions” and “Unlearning: Changing Your Beliefs and Your Classroom with UDL”. Our discussion with Allison traverses the possibilities that educators and designers of all environments- which we believe are all learning environments- can proactively plan for to accommodate variability. When we design with flexibility and access in mind, we ultimately create greater equity and facilitate engagement in learning. Be curious. Be Open. Initially aspiring to become a doctor like his parents and later venturing into the business world, Mazi Keyghobadi experienced significant failures and personal confusion. Instead, he found his purpose within nonprofit work, driven by his son's Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy diagnosis. Welcome back to another enlightening episode of the Better Call Daddy Show! In Europe, people aged 65 typically spend about half of their remaining years managing disabilities. Much of the existing research on aging has predominantly focused on identifying "cures" rather than exploring strategies for healthy aging. Dr. Esther Walton's is breaking new frontiers with the unconventional approach that aging begins at birth and should be approached through a comprehensive life course strategy that integrates studies of early development, adult psychiatry, and mental aging in later life. Her research program, BrainHealth, aims to fundamentally redefine, enhance, and distinguish mental aging throughout the lifespan by examining patterns of mental aging within the innovative framework of 'brain health'.With the BrainHealth program, Esther hopes to: 1) characterize brain health from birth to old age by establishing robust predictors of brain health in childhood and adolescence2) improve brain health by identifying modifiable protective factors to enhance brain health across the life course3) differentiate between physical and mental aging by developing a tissue-specific mouse model of lifelong brain health. If successful, this program will revolutionize the approach to healthy aging by permitting the early identification and alteration of unhealthy aging trajectories - a key societal challenge of our time.In this week's Everything Epigenetics podcast episode, we explore the fascinating intersection of brain health and epigenetics with Dr. Esther Walton, Associate Professor in Clinical Psychology at the University of Bath. Dr. Walton discusses her pioneering work on DNA methylation and its crucial role in brain development and mental health. This is especially exciting because little is known about the extent to which DNA methylation is linked to individual differences in the brain itself, and how these associations may unfold across development - a time of life when many mental disorders emerge. By combining epigenetics with advanced neuroimaging techniques, her studies continue to uncover how these epigenetic modifications affect brain structure and function over time.In this episode of Everything Epigenetics, you'll learn about: Why Esther studies the brainWhat DNA methylation measured in blood can tell us about the brainHow strongly mental health is linked to physical healthWhat role epigenetics plays in the link between mental and physical healthBrain age How strongly brain age is linked to epigenetic age How to measure brain age Developmental timingThe importance of examining the relationships between methylation, early-life stress, the brain and mental healthSpecific brain age associations that appear and disappear at different life stagesWhat Esther means by “aging starts at birth”The methylation imaging and neurodevelopment (MIND) consortiumWhere to find Esther:University of Bath ProfileLinkedInTwitterSupport the Show.Thank you for joining us at the Everything Epigenetics Podcast and remember you have control over your Epigenetics, so tune in next time to learn more about how.

Mindset work and manifestation practices (like, actual scientifically-credible manifestation practices) are powerful tools when you have “become a millionaire” on your life's vision board. Here's where things can get a little messy, though. And that's because…Doing hard work isn't always going to get you the thing you want – especially if that thing includes ‘break 7-figures' – and even more so if attempted under the guise of “fake it until you make it.” Which is, unfortunately, a lot of what manifesting + mindset work gets (incorrectly) boiled down to.As we lead up to the BIG 100th episode, join Adriane for her signature take on manifestation and “millionaire mindset” work - it's unlike any you've ever heard. Included are some very practical steps you can start taking action on today, plus a few outside-the-box thoughts to chew on along the way.Quick overview of what we cover:If you want to change your reality, you need to start with your brainHow to ‘find the story in your data' to achieve the thing you desireWhat changes for you when you go from being interested in something… to being committed to itDoing the hard work doesn't get you the thing you want – doing the right thing does (and coaches / courses / mentors / biz investments are best used to help figure out those ‘right things')If you've been plateaued, it's not because the decisions you're making have been wrong – you've just not been ready to make themIf you can't seem to figure (*gestures wildly*) all this out, it's most likely not an intelligence problem…it's a self-image problemHow to get back on track if your gut instincts about success have been overshadowed by a compulsion to show up and look a certain way ✨ LISTEN TO PART TWO OF THE SERIES HERE ✨RESOURCES: Click here to apply for a Growth Strategy CallClick here to apply for a Soulpreneur revenue-based scholarshipLET'S CONNECT: Connect with Adriane on LinkedIn @adrianegaleaFollow Adriane on Instagram @adrianegaleaVisit the website: soulpreneur.co

The best way to love your child's watchdog and possum parts is by loving your own.Today, as I move toward wrapping up this writing-and-publishing-a-book chapter in my life, let's talk a little more about the neuroscience of owls, watchdogs, and possums, why the science matters, and how my work has surprisingly become more about helping the grown-ups love their own owl, watchdog, and possum brains.Raising Kids with Big, Baffling Behaviors uses metaphor, story, and science to strengthen your owl brain (ventral vagal complex) and increase your window of stress tolerance. It is my hope that in reading this book, you will feel held by my owl brain.Thankfully, I have owl wings wrapped around my watchdog and possum brain, too. You can read about those folks in my acknowledgments. I have so many owls who have knit themselves into my neurobiology and strengthened my own owl self so that I can offer compassionate gratitude and nonjudgmental presence to you and your child. In this episode you'll learn:The science of the owl brain through the lens of Interpersonal NeurobiologyThe science of the owl brain through the lens of polyvagal theoryThe best way to strengthen YOUR owl brainHow strengthening your owl brain is the best way to strengthen your child'sResources mentioned in this podcast:Raising Kids with Big, Baffling Behaviors released September 21. Hey there, hunbuns! We're back with a little follow up from last week on what to do if you if the scale goes up after vacation (or in general). Post-vacay is when the scale scaries can hit hard but what we can't let it do is insert sh*tty emotions into our body.Today I'm reminding you that weight loss is 2 steps forward, 1 step back. Allison Liu, a brain health coach and expert in helping women to reclaim their mental sharpness and improve their energy and mood, struggled with brain fog and panic attacks in her early 50s. Forgetting what she was saying in the middle of saying it, finding it hard to express herself and feeling increasingly irritable, she felt she was losing her sense of self. Adopting a science-based approach, which she uses with her clients today, she increased her own ‘brain reserve', improving her memory, mood and relationships. She now coaches women in their 40s and beyond to achieve the same so that they can handle life's challenges with confidence and ease, and fully engage in life at work and at home. In this episode, Allison shares her knowledge on how to keep our brain healthy and sharp for life, including steps you can take NOW to keep your brain healthy!Highlights from the show:Allison's own "brain" story and her joureny to heal her brainHow amazing our brain is and why we need to do everything we can to look after itThe concept of 'brain reserve' and what it looks like when our reserve is lowThings that we can do to build our brain reserve to be better able to handle life's challenges and live life to the fullestThings we are doing to "hurt" our brainThings we can do to build the brain reserveResources:website: https://allisonliucoaching.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/allison-liu-3361991a2/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/allisonliucoaching/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allisonliucoaching

Brenda Wollenberg is an author and educator. She combines her education and experience as a nutritionist, social worker, and co-pastor in her work as a body /mind /spirit wellness coach. Over the past five years, she has expanded her training and scope of practice to help her clients understand how genetics influences overall wellness. She has worked for decades using metabolic typing to inform food plans, exercise routines, and stress management tools. With the added epigenetic component, however—examining how behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect genes' expression—she now works, 1-1 and in a group setting, to help clients explore clinically relevant and nutritionally actionable genes, and discover the ideal way to eat, supplement, move and calm for their genetic profile. Brenda is the author of 'Overweight Kids in a Toothpick World', and 'Eat, Sleep Move: For Your Genetic Body Type. How to Physically and Emotionally Care for a Unique You'. She has had articles in Canadian Living, Mclean's, and Family Fun and has also created In Balance Wellness programs for children, teens, and adults. Most recently, along with co-creator Alicia Mazari-Anderson, a fellow nutritionist with a Ph.D. in biology, Brenda has developed Gene Reset Blueprint: A 12-Week Program for Personalized Optimal Health. Brenda's decades of experience across a range of physical, emotional, and spiritual modalities, has enabled her to design a methodology that harnesses the power of genetics and epigenetics—the environment—to optimize good health. Historically on this show, we want guests who either have skills that they can teach us (i.e. meditation teachers or happiness researchers) or we want people who are willing to get super personal about their interior lives—and today you're gonna meet a bold-faced name who happens to have both qualifications in spades.Mayim Bialik burst onto the scene in the 1990s as the star of the TV show Blossom. Then she stepped away, got a bachelor's and a PhD in neuroscience, and became a mom. She returned to TV with another sitcom, The Big Bang Theory. And now she has a very full plate as the co-host of Jeopardy! and the host of a podcast of her own called Mayim's Breakdown. Oh, and she's also written four books, including Girling Up: How to Be Strong, Smart, and Spectacular and Boying Up: How to Be Brave, Bold, and Brilliant. In this episode we talk about:The pressures of being a teen starMayim's fascination with the brainHow she squares her scientific expertise with her religious beliefsWhy she half-jokingly says she was born “a mental health challenge” The difference between anxiety attacks and panic disorderWhy she's chosen to be so public about her complicated psychiatric historyWhether it's possible to be overdiagnosedThe tools she personally uses to stay afloatWhat's behind her busyness, and what happened when she decided to stop working all the timeAnd why at age 47, she's now taking the time to learn how to express her anger in a healthy wayA note that there are some mentions of suicide and addiction in this episode.
