He is the bestselling author of Recharge, and has been recognized by TIME, LinkedIn, RockHealth, and NYU Stern for his leadership in digital health. What you'll learn:How David transitioned from gaming to healthcare through mission-driven insightThe real story behind Calm's evolution from sleep and meditation to global mental healthWhy David uses “battery level” as a tool for checking in at workHow leaders can model vulnerability without sacrificing authorityWhy burnout stems from poor workload management, not just long hoursThe power of shared purpose in turbulent timesHow Calm uses rituals like Jay Shetty meditations and Zoom-free days to reinforce its cultureWhy sleep, diet, and presence are core to David's leadership performanceHow transparency builds trust even when the news isn't goodWhy the conversation around mental health needs to start at the topSome takeaways:➡️ Stress is not the problem. Unchecked, unacknowledged stress is. Good stress can fuel resilience and performance.➡️ “How's your battery?” is a more meaningful check-in than “How are you?”➡️ Burnout often comes from lack of clarity and excessive task stacking, not too many hours.➡️ Leaders must explain the why behind priorities and remove as much as they assign. ➡️ Transparency about culture survey results builds psychological safety. ➡️ Rituals like 90-second meditations help reset and re-center teams. ➡️ Leadership can be lonely. Trusted colleagues make a critical difference. ➡️ Presence matters more than hours. Back-to-back meetings are not a badge of honor. ➡️ Sharing your own mental health journey is not weakness. It's how resilient teams are built. ➡️ “We take better care of our phone batteries than our mental health batteries.” Time to change that.Where to find David Ko:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daveko/ Calm: https://www.calm.comBook: Recharge: Boosting Your Mental Battery One Conversation at a TimePodcast: Recharge (available on major platforms)Connect with Alisa! In this message, we explore the emotional rollercoaster of Jonah—a prophet who didn't run from danger but from grace. Jonah's story reveals a deep internal conflict: obeying God outwardly while resenting Him inwardly. Why would a man of God resist a revival? What do we do when God's mercy offends our sense of justice? From storms and fish to sulking under a plant, Jonah's journey mirrors our own struggles with fear, control, bitterness, and surrender. This isn't just a story about a man who ran—it's about how God chases us down even when we don't agree with Him. Are you avoiding a calling because it challenges your pride? This teaching will help you confront the Nineveh in your heart and see how obedience—even messy, reluctant obedience—can still lead to revival.

Church Scandals Aren't Random: How Ignorance Paves the Way for More Harm A Funny, Painful Story (That's Actually Very Relevant) Before we dive into heavy stuff, let me tell you a story. 4 weeks and 2 days ago... Picture this: I'm flat on my back, in the middle of the street, 20 feet away from a car that thankfully didn't roll over me. I'm convinced something's stabbing into my heart. Pain is shooting through my body in so many places. A kind lady rushes from her porch to help me hobble to safety while the ambulance is called. As I wait there's constant pain, but when I move in certain ways it suddenly becomes utterly excruciating. No idea what I hit. No idea what actually happened. Things were going great for the two hours I was on my OneWheel before the accident.  What the heck happened? And what is happening now? Some neighbor kids stop and check in. I ask them to pray for me and I lead them in a prayer in Jesus name... that was a comfort from strangers. The ambulance finally arrives -- after it seems like forever -- and load me onto a stretcher. They were sure I dislocated my shoulder and were insisting to pull me up. I knew that wasn't what was wrong. I was embarrassingly vocal about not being helped up. I seemed to feel every single pothole on the way to hospital.  Arriving in the hospital... the random excruciating shoots through my chest continued -- oh, and so did my resulting involuntary screams. (No recordings were taken, thank God :) So, the morphine helped and the oxy-whatever they gave me next. But what really changed everything was the x-rays. They finally discover the truth: My clavicle was snapped clean through. Knowing what was actually wrong changed everything. I finally had clarity. I finally had a path toward healing — real healing — not just numbing the pain. I finally could understand how to move in a way that avoided the excruciating pain and actually kept things in place to heal most effectively. THIS is what's happening in the Church right now. We have an injury. It's bad. Really, really, really bad. But instead of diagnosing it, we often just take some spiritual "morphine" — slap on platitudes, excuses, or cover-ups — and hope healing happens. It doesn't. Tragically, thousands of new cases are reported yearly... in the church of Jesus Christ around the world. This is horrifying. And the Church's sexual scandals are not random. They are not "one-off" tragedies. They are the result of deep, hidden roots — an injury we have to address if we want healing. Church Hurt: Ignoring the Pain Doesn't Heal It If I had ignored my broken clavicle, kept "powering through," or simply taken painkillers to numb it? It would have actually healed wrong.Permanently damaged.Maybe even required major surgery to fix later. The Church is at that critical moment. If we don't stop and x-ray the damage — truly diagnose the underlying break — it won't just stay bad. It will get worse. That's why these scandals feel endless. They are symptoms of deeper problems never addressed.   Church Scandals Are Not Random Accidents The fall of a pastor or leader is often treated like a shocking, isolated event. "He must have just slipped up!""It was a moment of weakness!" But the truth is, these scandals follow patterns. Unchecked small compromises.Isolation.A culture that produces an environment where pastors must be superhuman.  Double lives hidden by fear and shame.Lack of sexual stewardship. These are not random falls. These are predictable results of invisible fractures left untreated. The Enemy Wants Our Ignorance Satan thrives when we stay ignorant. When we don't know the roots, we can't heal them. When we don't expose the darkness, it festers and infects the Body of Christ. Paul makes it clear we shouldn't be ignorant of how the enemy attacks: "In order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes." (2 Cor 2:11) Jesus warns us: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy." (John 10:10) When sexual sin in leadership is ignored, minimized, or hidden, it does exactly that:Steals faith.Kills trust.Destroys credibility. We must be wise.We must stop assuming "it could never happen here."We must learn how to recognize the roots before they bloom into ruin.   Why Sexual Sin Wounds So Deeply & How to Heal Sexual sin isn't "just another mistake."Biblically, it's in a category of its own: "Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body." (1 Corinthians 6:18) When a leader sins sexually, it's a double wound: Personal: They defile their own body, the temple of the Holy Spirit. Corporate: They shatter the credibility of the Gospel they once preached. People who were already fragile in their faith see hypocrisy... and walk away not just from a leader, but from Jesus, Himself. The wound runs deep. But Jesus takes it seriously. Jesus didn't say: "Try not to look at porn if you can." "Lust is understandable, just don't act on it." No. He said: "If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out... It's better to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell." (Matthew 5:29) Jesus used extreme language because sexual sin matters that much. We should not downplay what Jesus took so seriously. When leaders indulge in pornography, prostitution, or affairs, they are objectifying someone God created. That woman on a screen is a daughter of the King of Kings. A daughter who He even gave His only son to save. Cover-Ups Are Spiritual Oxycodone It's easier to slap a spiritual Band-Aid over a scandal than face the ugly truth. "Let's quietly remove him." "Let's not make a big deal; it might hurt the church's reputation." "Let's just forgive and move on." That's spiritual oxycodone — numbing the pain without healing the break. Without truth and exposure, the infection worsens. The pattern repeats.More people get hurt.   Real love doesn't ignore cancer.Real love demands we discover it and deal with it.   That's actual love.   And Exposure Alone Isn't Enough Here's the other mistake:Thinking that "going public" fixes the problem.   It doesn't.   Exposure without a healing plan leaves broken people bleeding in the streets. Just like my broken clavicle needed realignment, time, careful handling and care — fallen leaders (and hurting congregations) need intentional healing journeys. Healing isn't automatic. It's hard. It takes time. It takes wisdom. It takes safe people. But it's possible. Healing the Church Starts with Us You may be a small group leader.A volunteer.A pastor's wife.A youth mentor.A faithful Sunday worshiper.   You are part of the Body. And when one part is sick, the whole body suffers. We cannot afford to shrug and say, "Not my problem." The future witness of the Church depends on believers who are awake, wise, and willing to act.   The Band-Aid Problem Let me just say it plainly: Covering up a church scandal with "just pray for him" or "let's not talk about it" is like slapping a Batman-themed Band-Aid on a bullet wound and sending the guy back into battle. He's going to bleed out. And so is the faith of everyone watching. We need real surgery, not stickers.   What Next? What Pastors and Leaders Need If you've been wounded by a scandal —If you're grieved by the hypocrisy —If you're tired of seeing Jesus' name dragged through the mud — You are not alone. Healing is possible. But it starts with exposing the real problem and walking through the hard, beautiful journey of restoration. Lord, help us. Heal Your Church. Dr. Rose joins former South Texas Congressman Blake Farenthold in PART ONE of a fresh dive into corruption within the US intelligence community, showing how agencies exploit power for political control over safeguarding national security. Dr. Rose uses and highly recommends Field of Greens. Your purchase through this link supports The Scalpel Podcast. /// https://scalpeledge.com/brickhouse In this episode Dr. Rose and Blake Farenthold get into a concerning narrative of corruption within the US intelligence community, highlighting how agencies have shifted their focus from national security to political control. A central issue is the alleged concealment of Jeffrey Epstein's files, suggesting high-level corruption that could expose systemic misconduct. The discussion also touches on human trafficking and influencing political processes, indicating a troubling pattern of abuse of power. The intelligence agencies' use of polygraph tests to monitor individuals adds an element of fear and control, as they target leaks and manipulate outcomes. Importantly, the need to protect women who possess compromising information, which could stem from whistleblowing or victimization. This underscores ethical concerns about accountability within the agencies. Finally, Dr. Rose and Blake advocate for supporting the president in uncovering corruption within his administration, possibly through trusted advisors, while also stressing the importance of exposing seditious conspiracies to restore integrity and safeguard democracy. Unchecked power is dangerous, and there is an urgent need for transparency and reform within the intelligence community. However, God's Word (particularly, the Golden Rule) offers a transformative path: choose love over vengeance, seek reconciliation and allow God's Spirit to heal wounds. By mastering our impulses and embracing forgiveness, we can break cycles of bitterness and experience divine restoration.

Donald Trump's presidency continues to challenge all conventional understanding of executive authority. His administration's extensive use of executive orders has reshaped the political landscape, testing established laws, ethical boundaries, and institutional norms.Among those raising alarms is Democratic Rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, who has consistently questioned what happens when governmental powers are directed against the very citizens they were designed to protect. On this week's episode of The Intercept Briefing, she discusses these concerns, including the administration's immigration enforcement tactics targeting international students — among them, one of her own constituents. Rümeysa Öztürk, a Ph.D. candidate at Tufts University who has a valid student visa, was abducted off the streets by ICE agents.“ She was kidnapped in broad daylight. There is no evidence of any criminal wrongdoing. The only — the only — thing that she did was co-author an op-ed centering the humanity and the dignity of the Palestinian people and because that is a dissenting opinion of the hostile Trump administration, she finds herself a political prisoner,” says Pressley.“So I need people to understand that this could be anyone when constitutional rights are being violated, when due process is being violated. It could be you tomorrow for reading a banned book. It could be you tomorrow for suffering a miscarriage. It could be you tomorrow for practicing diversity, equity, and inclusion,” she warns. In a broad ranging conversation with host Jessica Washington, she also raises fundamental questions about executive authority and democratic safeguards.“It was all laid out in Project 2025, which was not a blueprint — it was a playbook. And they're making good on that playbook. And I think people didn't take it seriously,” Pressley points out. “They recognized that a lot of what he was laying out in that playbook was unlawful — was unconstitutional. So they said, how could it ever happen? And yet, you know, here we find ourselves.”And despite widespread criticism and anger about the Democratic Party's response — or lack thereof — she believes her party is stepping up. “Even though I believe that we are — as a party — being exhaustive, being strategic, [we] have found our footing. I believe we are being more effective as an opposition party in resistance to this hostile administration,” Pressley says. But she acknowledges the Democrats can do more. “ I do believe that we have a sound strategy of litigation, legislation, agitation, mobilization, and I think we are finding our footing. We have to match their energy. They're flooding the zone. We have to do the same thing.”Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen. In the late 1960s, Will Patten was living in Berkeley, California, attending antiwar protests and shaking his first against capitalism and greedy businessmen.Today, at the age of 80, Patten is a true believer in capitalism and a successful businessman. He tells the story of his odyssey in a new book, “Rescuing Capitalism: Vermont Shows the Way.”Will Patten grew up on a dairy farm in southern Vermont in the 1950s. After receiving a bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University, Patten attended UC Berkeley to get a doctorate in history. But after participating in the Summer of Love in 1967, he dropped out of grad school and headed back to Vermont to “keep the revolution alive.” He opened a natural foods café in Rutland to serve as a gathering place for like-minded radicals. “In other words,” he writes, “I became the enemy: a businessman.” But Patten believed in a different kind of business, one that sought to bring about positive social change.A few years later, Patten met Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, who wanted to use their ice cream as a vehicle for social change. Patten saw that they were kindred spirits. He opened one of the first Ben & Jerry's scoop shops, and soon became director of retail operations overseeing more than 500 scoop shops in a dozen countries. He retired from Ben & Jerry's in 2007, but quickly unretired to lead Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility. In 2012, he unretired again to open the Hinesburg Public House, a community-supported restaurant.Patten now believes that capitalism has been hijacked by corporate profiteers. What can save it, and us? He insists that democratic capitalism, as he calls it, is the way forward, and Vermont has shown the way."(President) Ronald Reagan hijacked capitalism when he proclaimed that government was the problem, and that started a 44 year experiment in letting corporations pursue profits without caring about the earth or its inhabitants. So supply side economics is what hijacked capitalism, and it's been a disaster," said Patten.Unchecked capitalism has led to "the collapse of our environment, a very hostile climate, and the unraveling of our social fabric. We are in a severe existential crisis, and the time to fix that is getting closer and closer. We're running out of time."Why does he think that the solution to runaway capitalism is capitalism?"Capitalism is the only functioning institution there is," said Patten. "Small business is the most respected institution in the country today. I'm not saying that capitalism is going to pull us out of the ditch, but I think — and there are signs that it's beginning — that it is in their own interest to do so."Patten argues that Vermont's socially responsible businesses, including Ben & Jerry's, Gardeners Supply, and Green Mountain Power, offer a model of how business can support positive change. "The businesses that we have have always revered the environment and the and the communities and the people as much as they've revered profits." Businesses can do good not just because "it's a moral imperative, but it's also an economic imperative. They're making money finding solutions to the crises we face."What would Patten tell the '60s radical version of himself?"I would probably tell him to do what I did, which was to get into the belly of the beast and change it from the inside."

"Don't make me angry. You won't like me when I'm angry." Anger is a strange emotion that is often misconstrued. While most of us don't necessarily turn into The Hulk when we get angry, many of us do struggle with allowing anger to get the best of us. How do we approach difficult situations that make us angry? Is there a proper use of anger in a Biblical context? Learn the answer to these questions and many more with Nathan, Matt, and Stephen as they talk through the events of 1 Samuel 25:9-35.

1 Samuel 25:9-351. Despite our best efforts to work with them, sometimes people are just jerks.2. When a person is wronged, it is natural and not sinful to feel anger.3. Peacemakers go above and beyond to spare the most people.4. Your first reaction doesn't have to be your last reaction.“ Never succumb to the temptation of becoming bitter. As you press on for justice, be sure to move with dignity and discipline, using only the weapon of love. Let no man pull you so low as to hate him. Always avoid violence. If you succumb to the temptation of using violence in your struggle, unborn generations will be the recipients of a long and desolate night of bitterness, and your chief legacy to the future will be an endless reign of meaningless chaos.” Martin Luther King Jr.

Numbers 11 is a significant chapter in the Bible, describing a series of events where the Israelites complain about their hardships during their journey through the wilderness. The chapter highlights themes of dissatisfaction, divine provision, judgment, and leadership challenges. Summary of Numbers 11 1.The People Complain (Verses 1-3) The Israelites, recently freed from Egypt, begin to complain about their hardships. God's anger is kindled, and He sends fire that consumes some of the outskirts of the camp. Moses intercedes, and God stops the fire, but the place is named Taberah (“burning”) because of the event. 2.The Craving for Meat (Verses 4-9) A group among them, called the “rabble,” begins to crave meat and complain about only having manna to eat. They nostalgically recall the food they had in Egypt—fish, cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic. The people express their dissatisfaction with manna, even though it was God's miraculous provision. 3.Moses' Burden and God's Response (Verses 10-15) Moses, overwhelmed by the people's complaints, expresses frustration to God. He feels the weight of leadership and asks God to either help him or take his life. This highlights Moses' human limitations and the immense challenge of leading a complaining people. 4.The Appointment of Seventy Elders (Verses 16-30) God instructs Moses to gather seventy elders, who will receive a portion of Moses' spirit to help him lead. When the Spirit of God comes upon them, they prophesy. Two men, Eldad and Medad, prophesy in the camp, and Joshua wants to stop them, but Moses responds that he wishes all God's people could be filled with the Spirit. 5.God Sends Quail and Judgment (Verses 31-35) God answers the people's craving by sending an overwhelming amount of quail. The people greedily gather and eat the meat, but as they chew, God sends a plague because of their greed and lack of gratitude. The place is named Kibroth Hattaavah (“Graves of Craving”) because many who craved meat died there. The Israelites then continue their journey to Hazeroth. Key Themes and Lessons Gratitude vs. Complaining: The Israelites' complaints reflect human nature's tendency to focus on what is lacking rather than appreciating God's blessings. God's Provision: Despite their complaints, God provides food (manna and quail), showing His care but also His discipline when people are ungrateful. Leadership Challenges: Moses experiences the emotional toll of leadership, but God provides support through the seventy elders. Judgment and Consequences: Craving and greed lead to divine judgment, emphasizing that desires must be aligned with God's will. Application for Today Trusting in God's provision rather than longing for the past. The importance of gratitude over complaining. Leadership requires reliance on God and shared responsibility. Unchecked cravings and dissatisfaction can lead to negative consequences. Numbers 11 serves as a reminder of both God's provision and the importance of faithfulness in following His ways. In just a few weeks, President Trump has flooded the zone with executive orders, which have been met with dozens of lawsuits by state attorneys general, unions and non-profits and complaints by Democrats in Congress. Some of the orders have been blocked in court. But last weekend, Vice President JD Vance posted a tweet implying that a judge can't tell the executive what to do. So what recourse do the courts, Congress or states have if the administration were to just ignore judicial rulings against them? Kara discusses the strength of our constitutional “checks and balances” and whether we are in or on the brink of a “constitutional crisis” with former US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara (host of the Vox Media Podcast Network's Stay Tuned with Preet); lawyer and outspoken anti-Trump conservative George Conway; CNN special correspondent Jamie Gangel; and former Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust Jonathan Kanter.  Note: This episode was taped the morning of 2/11/2025, before President Trump said in response to a reporter's question in the Oval Office that he intended to abide by court rulings and appeal if his orders are blocked. What if I told you that the culture in your workplace—or even in your home—isn't what you say it is? It's what you allow it to be. Culture isn't defined by the posters on the walls, the mission statements, or even the rules we declare. It's shaped by the behaviors and attitudes we tolerate. Today, I'll dive into how this concept affects our leadership, workplaces, and personal lives, and why it's essential to align what we tolerate with the culture we truly want.Culture vs. ExpectationsCulture is not built on lofty declarations or values we aspire to achieve. While these aspirations set a standard, the actual culture reflects what we accept and allow. If there's a gap between the behaviors we permit and the values we claim, the true culture always aligns with what we tolerate. The Role of Tolerated BehaviorsTolerated behaviors create the foundation for culture, whether positive or negative. Unchecked actions—whether in a team, at home, or in personal relationships—can lead to dysfunction and misalignment. Leadership involves actively addressing these behaviors, not just setting high expectations.Personal Reflection on Tolerance at HomeParenting often serves as a mirror for leadership. In my own life, as my kids grow and test boundaries, I've seen the importance of not just stating what's acceptable but consistently enforcing it. Similarly, in teams, it's not enough to say “this isn't okay”; we must actively address and redirect behaviors to align with our desired culture.Unchecked Behavior and Leadership ChallengesToxicity in teams arises when poor behavior goes unchecked, often because leaders avoid hard conversations. Whether due to long-standing relationships, fear of confrontation, or lack of clarity, ignoring these issues undermines the integrity of the culture. True leadership requires courage to address these challenges.Auditing and Modeling BehaviorLeadership begins with auditing the behaviors we allow, not just the words we say. How often do we hold ourselves and others accountable? How often do we model the standards we expect? Leadership is action—it's visible, consistent, and intentional.Proactive vs. Reactive LeadershipReactive leadership responds to problems as they arise, while proactive leadership anticipates and prevents them. Proactive leaders model and enforce boundaries, fostering a culture of alignment and clarity. The path to proactive leadership begins with asking what you are currently tolerating and how it affects your team or home environment.Key TakeawaysCulture is Action: It's not defined by statements but by what we allow.Audit Your Environment: Assess what behaviors you tolerate and how they shape your culture.Address Misalignment: Hard conversations are essential for maintaining integrity.Model Leadership: Set the tone by consistently enforcing and embodying desired behaviors.Proactive Over Reactive: Build a leadership style that anticipates and prevents issues, rather than reacting to them.Key Quotes"Culture isn't what you say—it's what you tolerate.""Unchecked behavior is the root of dysfunction in teams and homes.""Leadership is visible, intentional, and consistent.""Proactive leadership creates alignment and clarity."Resources MentionedThe Path to Proactive Leadership Program: Learn how to align your actions with your values and lead with clarity.
