My Path to Global International Relations: A semi-autobiographical textbook by Dr Vendulka Kubalkova https://www.amazon.com/Path-Global-International-Relations-semi-autobiographical/dp/B0GJSFG95W Drvkubalkova.com My Path to Global International Relations is a semi-autobiographical textbook. Textbooks are comprehensive compilations of content in a branch of study students learn. Textbooks are produced to meet primarily the needs of educators. They come with ready-made PowerPoints, quizzes, videos, lesson-by-lesson schedules, etc., to facilitate the teacher’s job. Unlike textbooks but like fiction generally, the autobiographical format of this work is designed primarily with a reader in mind: to be learned in an enjoyable way since it tells a real-life story. It is a story of “study abroad” gone awry at the height of the Cold War. The permission to study abroad in the Communist country came with strings attached: a KGB espionage assignment. The author’s home Prague, and she was only 24 at the time, was occupied by tanks. It became a moral issue for her, and having been blackmailed into accepting the espionage assignment, she blew her cover in England, where she was to study on a British scholarship. It started a lonely path of exile through international relations, statelessness, undocumented, and, for decades, unable to go home. It led to a challenging but successful career as a Professor of International Relations in several countries. Standard textbooks quickly become out of date, the Preface stresses, the “Globe is in everybody’s living room.” Many stories and animated learning videos are referenced throughout this book and available separately. The chapter’s topics are interdisciplinary with history excursions, the philosophy of knowledge, social sciences, postcolonial studies, and sociology of knowledge (challenges universities face), and it introduces some of her friends and colleagues, the prominent scholars of the field of International Relations.

Dogs Don't Bark at Parked Cars: Your GPS in an Era of Hyper-Change by Jeff Piersall https://www.amazon.com/dp/1683504461 Linkedin.com/in/jeffpiersall Some attribute it to Aristotle, but whether the great Greek philosopher said it or not doesn't affect its timeless truth. “If you want to avoid criticism, all you have to do is say nothing, do nothing and be nothing.” If on the other hand, you decide your life is purposed for something worthy and being on the playing field is preferred to sitting in the stands, there is something you are sure to encounter; what Jeff Piersall and Eric Wright call “barking dogs.” Dogs Don't Bark at Parked Cars illustrates this encounter as the voices that find fault, who don't think it's possible, who are unable to see a future alive with opportunities waiting to be seized. They are the ones governed by fear instead of faith. Unfortunately, many times the loudest of these barking dogs are kenneled right in most people's own heads. For Jeff and Eric, that priceless quality is wisdom. It goes beyond knowledge or aptitude and transcends this era of cultural and technological hyper-change, with principles that are timeless.

Tim Brown doesn't just tell a story of survival—he delivers a blueprint for leadership under the most extreme circumstances imaginable.”—Gary Sinise “I was profoundly moved by Tim's story of resilience, faith, and enduring purpose.”—Admiral William McRaven, from the foreword Decorated FDNY firefighter, 9/11 survivor, and expert emergency manager Tim Brown shares the lessons he's learned about grief, resilience, sacrificial love, and transforming pain into purpose. Would you be able to stand again after the worst day of your life? How do you keep serving and leading when the task is heavy and the cost is high? On September 11, 2001, FDNY firefighter and emergency manager Tim Brown was inside the World Trade Center complex when the towers fell. Nearly one hundred of his friends and colleagues were killed. He lived—and vowed to never forget. Then came September 12. And every day after that. Days spent first surviving, then grieving, then learning how to transform pain into purpose. Drawing on decades in fire service, disaster response, and national security, as well as on the lessons learned from the fallen heroes, Brown distills the principles of sacrificial service that he forged in the midst of pressure, trauma, and great personal cost. In The Greatest Love, you'll learn: • How to re-discover purpose by finding your sacrificial why • What nine therapists missed about managing grief—and the process that finally worked • Why establishing the DNA of sacrificial service in your life is key • How to connect with your brotherhood and leave a legacy Sacrificial service is the greatest love any of us can show. This means carrying the load when no one is watching, putting service before self-protection, and not letting your loss dictate who you become. Step beyond survival and into a life marked by purpose, resilience, and grace.

The Digital Delusion: How Classroom Technology Harms Our Kids’ Learning–and How to Help Them Thrive Again by Jared Cooney Horvath PhD Med. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GPR5NXSM Educator and neuroscientist Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath reveals why digital tools in school consistently undermine learning—and what parents, teachers, and schools can do to push back with purpose. Our children are struggling. Schools, once alive with human connection, are now dominated by screens and digital tools. The result is unmistakable: declining performance, fractured attention, and the slow erosion of rigorous thought. For the first time in recent history, children are falling behind previous generations on many key measures of cognitive development. In The Digital Delusion, neuroscientist and educator Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath reveals how the widespread use of laptops, tablets, and classroom software is undermining how children learn and develop. Drawing on decades of research, he provides practical tools for families to reassess device use at home, equips educators with the means to restore attention-rich learning environments, and helps schools make smarter decisions about technology. He exposes and dismantles the central myths driving the EdTech movement and lays out a clear path for putting people—not programs—back at the center of education. This is not a call to reject technology. It's a call to reclaim real learning. About the author Jared Cooney Horvath (PhD, MEd) is a neuroscientist, educator, and best-selling author who specializes in human learning and brain development. He is the creator of The Learning Blueprint, an international award-winning program helping educators and students understand how learning actually works. Wrong Side Out: Madness Misdiagnosed by Benton Savage https://www.amazon.com/Wrong-Side-Out-Madness-Misdiagnosed-ebook/dp/B0GRPVD4NX In Wrong Side Out, Benton Savage tells a starkly honest story of living through prolonged confusion, loss of control, and the slow work of reclaiming himself. Told from the inside, the memoir captures what it feels like when judgment falters, reality bends, and everyday decisions carry unexpected consequences, often with lasting personal cost. Savage writes openly about isolation, damaged relationships, and moments when his own instincts could not be trusted, yet the book resists easy explanations or tidy redemption. Instead, it follows a long, uneven path marked by resistance, collapse, persistence, and gradual clarity. The struggle is not abstract or symbolic; it unfolds through real events, real mistakes, and the determination to keep going when forward motion feels impossible. At its core, Wrong Side Out is a story of endurance and self-reclamation, of learning to live with limits without erasing identity, and of finding steadiness after years of imbalance. It is not about labels or diagnoses, but about what it takes to regain footing, rebuild trust in oneself, and fully reengage with life on one’s own terms. About the author Benton Savage's life story is as rich and varied as his lines of writing. His time spent navigating personal changes and traversing the diverse landscapes has indelibly shaped his perspective and literary voice. Today, Benton resides in Fort Walton Beach, Florida where he balances his property management business with his true passion, writing. His daily dedication to capturing his thoughts and experiences on paper is a testament to his unwavering commitment to exploring the complexities of the human condition. His recently released poetry book, Fortune Cookies:100 Sayings to Help you Navigate Life's Challenges, a unique collection of poetic musings that mirrors the paper fortunes found in the heart of a cookie, reached number one on Amazon for new poetry in August 2024. Savage's coming-of-age novel, Free and Satisfied, explores issues with impulsivity, alcohol, and nuances of an interracial relationship, was published in April 2025.

Leadersh!t: A Look at the Broken Leadership System in Corporate America That Accepts Leaders Who are Really Good at Being Bad by Rande Somma https://www.amazon.com/LEADERSH-Broken-Leadership-Corporate-America/dp/1634919343 With humble beginnings in a small, low-income home in Pittsburgh to over 40 years of business experience including serving as a Chairman, Vice-Chairman and member of several corporate boards of directors, being a corporate officer and running a $20 billion global operation for Johnson Controls, Inc., Automotive Operations, Worldwide, Rande Somma has seen some things in the context of leadership that deeply disturbed him. Somma brings an empathetic top-down perspective to the problem of corporate leadership and the chasm of disconnect that often exists between the workers, management, and the C-suite executives. His book looks at lowered standards for leaders, higher compensation, and the path of convenience, fraud, greed, and corruption that leaders are more often choosing over obligation to their duties. Recently, American businesses have been looking for and hiring leaders who are willing to do anything to elevate our companies to be “successful”, to be the “best”. The author contends that what is considered to be “successful” and the “best” has changed over the past several years or decades to refer almost exclusively to financial gain. While leaders we hire are supposed to be individuals talented in the art of leading people, they are now those guys and gals who are more talented at being financial wizards and creating the illusion that the business is fundamentally sound. This book is about what we have surrendered in the process of our hyper focus on financial gains, and that includes the exceptional return on investment of integrity. The author presents a narrative about what he perceives as a serious and disturbing truth that is incrementally infecting companies both large and small. This truth that was once unacceptable has now become not just acceptable but expected and normal with regard to leadership in corporate America. Somma demonstrates through his personal stories and others’ experiences how corporate American leadership has descended into leadershit. While many of his stories are based on his own experience in the auto industry, Somma sees the problem as a more pervasive issue. It was not just the auto industry having a bad year or two; the pattern was repeated in other companies and industries and in other leadership situations. He recognized this as a leadership system that doesn’t serve us anymore, and therefore, it is the system that is the problem. Somma shows how we – all of us – are paying for leadershit’s lack of commitment to absolute integrity, authenticity, and real performance. While this book walks through Somma’s own tangles with the facets of leadership over the course of his professional career with many organizations, he encourages the reader to recognize the challenges that we all face and for all of us to emerge with solutions and as authentic leaders.

WHAT DO 11 U.S. PRESIDENTS, the DALAI LAMA and WHOOPI HAVE in COMMON? by Patrick O'Donnell https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CVG1G21C Patrickinfocus.com He photographed 11 U.S. presidents. But this California photojournalist’s 60-year career was about more than just the leaders of the free world. It was also about the evolution of modern journalism and one photographer’s quest to capture iconic images along the way. Patrick O’Donnell’s journey began in high school, when he caught the photojournalism bug from a master teacher. By college, he was taking pictures for his student newspaper, then working full-time for local papers while still in school. Early assignments included Richard Nixon’s failed California governor bid and Eisenhower’s 1964 Rose Bowl appearance. So began O’Donnell’s front-row view of history. His warm, personal stories take you behind the lens and scenes of inside access chatting confidentially with George H.W. Bush at an event and capturing images of Nixon's resignation day at El Toro marine base. Much more than presidents alone, this memoir follows O’Donnell through adventures covering sports, local events, fairs and entertainers like Kevin Costner and Tony Bennett. We ride along to meet everyone from Dr. “Bee Man” Norm Gary to Groucho Marx feeding grapes to Alice Cooper. The Dalai Lama, Margaret Thatcher and Jerry Brown sprinkle the narrative too. Part journalism passion project, part who's who of 55+ years behind closed doors, this richly illustrated book memorializes an era when newspapers still ruled – before cell phones and digital film crowded out the dark room. Personal, humorous stories make this insider’s chronicle a must-read photo memoir for any news junkie and photography buff.

A lifelong learner and natural storyteller, he has built a career that bridges science, humanity, and quiet spirituality. A graduate of North Carolina State University, he later earned his Master's degree in Education Administration from East Carolina University. For over 15 years, he has served as a high school science teacher, where his passion for discovery, curiosity, and connection has inspired countless students. Before his time in education, he worked in 911 emergency services and as a Quality Control Chemist, roles that gave him a unique understanding of people, precision, and the delicate balance between chaos and order. Outside the classroom, David Hasty is a proud father of three children—Jenna, his oldest daughter; Alex, his middle son; and Hannah, his youngest. Though divorced, he cherishes the close bond he shares with his children and finds joy in simple, grounding routines—cooking, singing, reading, and enjoying a quiet cup of coffee. Writing has always been his creative refuge. From his earliest years, he found comfort in books and storytelling, often imagining new worlds while reading survival stories or exploring nature. Today, his fiction reflects the same curiosity and wonder that have defined his life—a blend of imagination, empathy, and a subtle spiritual awareness that guides his characters and themes. While his stories are fictional, they are deeply influenced by his belief that there's a greater design in life—something spiritual that shapes every experience and connection. Through his writing, he hopes to remind readers that there is always light to be found, meaning to be discovered, and hope to be shared in the stories we tell.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and its members have been persecuted since the founding of the Church, and its members often called non-Christian. Is this really true? There are many truths about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that invite discussion. Prior to completing my training in San Antonio I met and married my wife of the last forty years. My wife is also a physician. Fellowship training in lower extremity total joint replacement and sports medicine occurred in San Antonio, Texas and then Sydney, Australia. My first orthopedic practice was in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Then after two years I immigrated to Texas where I practiced for another thirty years in the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. I continue to enjoy outdoor sports, fishing, and I am an admirer of Western art of the United States. After two total hip replacements I have abandoned skiing, but I continue to enjoy hiking in the Rocky Mountains of the United States. I have also found that I enjoy writing. Following my retirement I enrolled at the University of Texas at Dallas and began with a creative writing class. Thereafter, the Covid pandemic caused an acute cessation of my post-post-graduate education.

We are in a critical ticking time bomb, and the Earth is in a perilous state. The effects of climate change are everywhere — for anyone to continue to deny it, is insane. From the extreme weather conditions like drought and fires to the devastation of our glaciers covered with black carbon — we are running out of time. Burn Fuel Better will shed light on some of the unintentional mistakes we are making to address climate change and suggest practical solutions we can make to minimize and possibly reverse the impact — solutions that can be fully implemented today, not 20 – 30 years in the future, when it will be too late. With an accidental discovery of lowering certain types of emissions from diesel engines, this new way of burning fuel minimizes black carbon from entering the atmosphere and adds life-sustaining oxygen. It may sound too impossible to believe and too good to be true. Still, once you discover the proven science behind the technology, you will see how easy it is to join the revolution to save our planet — one fuel-burning vehicle and application at a time. Though this research has far-reaching effects and benefits the public at large, most people are unaware of the inner workings of academic research. Who bears the risk for new discoveries? What role do graduate students play in innovation? What are the shortcomings of academic research, and can the system be fixed? In Science Nonfiction: Behind the Scenes in University Research, Darren J. Lipomi, PhD, a scientist and educator, offers readers an insider's perspective of scientific discovery in academia. Drawing on two decades of experience in elite labs and universities, he reveals a system few outsiders ever see. By examining his own career trajectory—from humble beginnings to prestigious universities like Harvard and Stanford to academic leadership—Lipomi illustrates the impact that incentives, power, and politics have on knowledge production. Science Nonfiction captures both the ingenuity and absurdities of life in the lab. With this book, Lipomi hopes to shed light on the often-overlooked human side of scientific research, purporting that while the system is certainly imperfect, there is hope for a better future. Indeed, even with its immense flaws, academic research represents a significant societal investment in the future. As this investment faces greater scrutiny, limitations, and political interference, understanding the utility of academic research becomes more important than ever before. About the author Darren J. Lipomi, PhD, is chair and professor of chemical and sustainability engineering at University of Rochester. Lipomi earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry with a minor in physics as a Beckman Scholar at Boston University in 2005, and in 2010, he attained his PhD in chemistry at Harvard University, working alongside Professor George M. IS HE OR ISN’T HE? A Response to God’s Not Dead by Cliff Somers https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGKZBPL9 Cliffsomersmessageman.com The book God’s Not Dead by Pastor Rice Broocks so engaged Cliff’s interest and his disagreement with its content that he undertook to write a response (or rebuttal). This book is it. Dealing with such diverse issues as cosmology, theology, and evolution, as well as an examination of what the Gospels of the Bible really say, this book is argumentative and opinionated. However, Cliff respects the pastor (as he refers to Broocks) and has tried to be respectful in his approach. As the book states early on, Cliff is an atheist but not a proselytizer. You may be interested in the origin of the universe, the idea of the tuned universe, the dogma known as creationism, or that known as intelligent design, the question of the meaning to religion of Darwin’s theory of natural selection, or the actual words of the Gospels. If so, this book will intrigue you no matter which side of the fence you find yourself on. Come on in, the water’s fine. Cliff Somers was born in Portland, Maine, a long time ago and lived there until he was 15 years old. He then moved with his family to Florida, which he has claimed as his home state ever since. Cliff spent three years as an enlisted man in the U.S. Army Special Forces and went to Vietnam on an “A” team. He then received his undergraduate degree in English and a law degree from the University of Florida. Thereafter, he served for four years in the Army as a JAG officer where he served as a prosecutor (trial counsel) and prosecuted a nationally known murder case called U.S. v. MacDonald. That case was the subject of a televised series on FX in 2022, in which Cliff appears. He also served as a military judge. From 1972 until 2014, Cliff worked in Tampa as a civil trial lawyer with cases all over the west coast of Florida. In the practice of law, Cliff became a board-certified civil trial lawyer, and late in his practice, he was also a Florida Supreme Court certified mediator. He was listed during his practice in Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in America. Because he was English major, Cliff imagined himself as a famous novelist but discovered he lacked one asset for that task: he couldn't write dialogue for beans. This small problem led him to write the non-fiction (assuming that politics is not fiction) books and the poetry book shown on this website. Cliff lives with his wife, Jennie, in Citrus Park, a suburb of Tampa.

Help Wanted: How to Find and Keep Talent in a Forever-Tight Labor Market by Jerry Rubin, Steven L. Dawson https://www.amazon.com/dp/0262054396/ https://www.helpwantedbook.com/ How employers can compete in a challenging labor market—by hiring differently, redesigning job quality, and rethinking their government relations strategies. From two leaders in business and workforce development with a proven track record in innovative workforce strategies. Over the past ten years, the U.S. labor market has been buffeted, with demand shifting dramatically. At the same time, demographic trends mean that U.S. labor supply will steadily tighten into the coming decade: Relatively fewer native-born workers are entering the workforce; a greater percentage are choosing not to work; and an aging baby boom generation is exiting the workforce. What's worse, this systemic tightening of the US labor market has been exacerbated by the Trump administration's decision to dramatically constrain immigration, the primary source of recent labor market growth. Welcome to the “forever-tight” labor market. In Help Wanted, Jerry Rubin and Steven Dawson combine their 80 years of experience in management and workforce development to offer employers an “employee-focused competitive strategy.” This strategy includes a wide range of practical, well-researched tools and detailed case studies from a breadth of employers that will help readers compete for talent and retain a productive workforce. Since the underlying cause of the tightening labor supply is structural, employers—whether for-profit, nonprofit, or governmental—must respond in kind. They too must undertake structural changes in finding, hiring, and retaining workers. Now equal in importance to an organization's customer-service strategy, an employee-focused strategy is no longer simply a competitive advantage—it is fast becoming a competitive necessity. About the author Jerry Rubin is a Senior Advisor at the Harvard Project on the Workforce, a Foundation Fellow at the Eastern Bank Foundation and Co-Chair of the MassSkills Coalition. Most recently, he was CEO and President of JVS-Boston, a 250-employee organization that consults directly to businesses seeking job candidates recruited and trained by JVS. About the author Steven L. Dawson was founder and President of PHI, which consults on job-quality redesign to a range of private long-term care businesses and public healthcare/employment agencies. Earlier, he was founder and President of The ICA Group, which consults to and finances employee‐owned enterprises nationwide.

Standing in the River: A Devotional Based upon the Apostles’ Creed by Lyn Forte Richards https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G6P3499F Human nature has a tendency to create rules, expectations, and rituals with regard to religion. Christianity is the one and only faith that offers redemption without adherence to a set of rules. For two thousand years, it has transcended nationalities, languages, and cultures. It has waned throughout the ages when it has required adherence to extraneous rules or rituals. It has thrived in eras of its return to the central message: By grace are we saved through faith alone. Church attendance is in decline in the United States and Europe in all denominations. A majority of Evangelicals are affiliating with extreme-right culture, which has sparked some concern about the nature of what it means to be a follower of Christ. Social media, technology, and mass media contribute to complicating the basic tenet of salvation by faith. This book offers a return to the basic tenets of faith that were critical to the formation and expansion of Christianity for two thousand years. Hopefully, it will serve as a guide to return believers to the central ideals of Christianity while also amplifying and deepening the faith of the reader.
