On Friday, September 11, at sundown, Rosh Hashanah, the Feast of Trumpets (Leviticus 23:23-25), the Jewish New Year (5787), begins. Jewish families and friends gather together, greeting one another with the phrase, "L'Shanah Tova Tikatevu," meaning, "May You be Inscribed for a Good Year." As they gather around the table for the family meal welcoming the new year, they will have freshly baked challah (a traditional braided Jewish bread) on this occasion, often made with honey. And among the special deserts, are apples and honey for a sweet and happy new year.In the synagogue, the shofar (ram's horn) will be blown. It will be sounded 100 times with four different types of blasts. The blowing of the shofar is not a performance of a song. Rather, it is a summons to come before the Lord. And while many sages and rabbis over the centuries have provided reasons and purposes for the blowing of the shofar, in essence, there are two: it is a call to repentance; and a reminder of Israel's covenant relationship with God.The blowing of the shofar begins the Yomim Norarim, "the days of awe." During these ten days, Jewish people are to awake from their spiritual slumber and lethargy, and open their hearts to the living God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.As the shofar sounds tonight, this Rosh Hashanah, let us all consider our relationship with the Holy One of Israel, the God of all creation. Isaiah 63:7-64:12 provides us with revelation of the future when Israel as a nation will offer up a prayer to our Heavenly Father asking for his forgiveness. It is very similar in nature to an earlier prophecy of Isaiah in which he provides us with what will be the national confession of Israel for the rejection of Yeshua as Messiah (Isaiah 53:1-9). A confession that will lead to the nation being saved in a day (Isaiah 66:7-9; Romans 11:26-27). The confession is being made by the future faithful remnant of Israel. Shavuot is also called the Feast of Weeks and Pentecost. According to Jewish tradition, God gave the law on Shavuot. Thus, Shavuot celebrates the giving of the law and the revelation on Mount Sinai. According to Acts 2:1-4 it was on Shavuot that the Spirit of God was poured out on the believers and the "church" ("called out ones") was created.The primary passage in the Hebrew Scriptures that addresses Shavuot is Leviticus 23:15-22. In verse 15, the Jewish people are told to "count seven full weeks from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering." The question is, "what is meant by the term Sabbath in this passage?"Since it was on Shavuot that the believers were placed into the "body of Messiah," also known as the "church," or "ekkleisia" (meaning, "called out ones") by means of the baptizing work of the Holy Spirit, then what Luke is describing are the events that led to the birthday of the "church."The promise of the Spirit then is, among other things, the promise that by means of the Spirit of God, one can be placed in the "Body of Messiah." This means that believers in Messiah and what He has done for them, are connected to Him as well as one another.
