    TISHA B'AV: A DAY OF FASTING AND MOURNINGThis coming Saturday evening, August 2nd, the Jewish people will be observing Tisha B'Av. The name Tisha B'Av means "the Ninth of Av," Av being the fifth month in the Jewish calendar. It coincides with the months of July and August in the Gregorian calendar and is a day set aside for fasting, mourning, the reading of Scripture and prayer. It commemorates a number of tragedies that befell the Jewish people throughout their history.The observance of Tisha B'Av is nowhere commanded or instructed in the Scriptures, but reference to its observance by the Jewish people is found in the prophet Zechariah. In chapter 7 we read:"In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, the month of Kislev. The people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-Melech, together with their men, to entreat the Lord by asking the priests of the house of the Lord Almighty and the prophets, 'Should I mourn and fast in the fifth month (the month of Av), as I have done for so many years?" (Zechariah 7:1-3; cf. vs.5, 8:19) The rabbis taught that the Jewish people experienced five tragedies on Tisha B'Av: the expulsion of the Jews from Israel by the Babylonians in 586 BC, the destruction of the Temple by the Babylonians in 586 BC and then by the Romans in 70 AD, the fall of the city of Betar in 135 BC which ended the third Jewish revolt against Rome and the plowing of the city of Jerusalem by the Romans following the crushing of the rebellion.Despite all the tragedies and anguish the Jewish people have experienced at so many times and in so many places, Tisha B'Av is observed with a sense of hope. On Tisha B'Av the book of Lamentations is read and we are reminded:"Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, 'The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.' The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord...Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord. Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven...I called on your name, O Lord, from the depths of the pit. You heard my plea: Do not close your ears to my cry for relief. You came near when I called you, and you said, 'Do not fear.' O Lord, you took up my case; you redeemed my life." O daughter of Zion, your punishment will end; he will not prolong your exile...You, O Lord, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation...Restore us to yourself, O Lord, that we may return; renew our days as of old..."     We continue our study of the Spirit of God. Last week, we focused attention on the ministry of the Spirit of God among the Jewish people, the nation of Israel. As it is among believers today, the Spirit of God dwelt in the midst of his people Israel.The question then comes to mind, "How or in what manner did the Spirit of God dwell in Israel's midst?" In Nehemiah's prayer, after the wall around Jerusalem was completed, and the people were celebrating the Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles, in praise to the Lord, he says, "You gave your good Spirit to instruct them..." (Nehemiah 9:20).  It would seem that it was by the Spirit that rested upon Moses, that the "good Spirit" instructed the people of Israel.In addition to instructing the people, the Spirit of God at times filled some with strength, courage and might. Sometimes the Spirit moved upon individuals to equip them with skills of design and craftmanship.More could be said on this, but all of the working of the Spirit of God presented in the Hebrew Scriptures was for the purpose of pointing us toward Israel's Messiah upon whom the Spirit would reside without measure. Isaiah writes of Messiah that He is the one upon whom the seven-fold fullness of the Spirit would rest. He states: "And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord" (Isaiah 11:2).And lastly, in Isaiah 61:1 it is the Spirit of the Lord who empowers Messiah to fulfill His redemption ministry. He states: "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound."Whether in the Hebrew Scriptures or in the New Covenant Scriptures, the work of the Spirit of God is to draw attention away from Himself, and unto Messiah.     In the coming weeks at our services, we are going to focus attention on the Spirit of God, as he is revealed in the Hebrew Scriptures. It is interesting to note that while he is spoken of in both the Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament writings, reference to the Spirit of God is not as pervasive in the Hebrew Scriptures ashhe is in the texts of the New Testament.For example, the Spirit of God is mentioned in every New Testament book with the exception of the three short personal letters of Philemon,  II John,  and III John. On the other hand, He is only referred to in less than half of the thirty-nine books that make up the Hebrew Scriptures. We are first introduced to the Spirit of God in the opening verses of the Bible which records the creation of the universe. There He is called רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים (pronounced ruach elohim) meaning "the Spirit of God."Depending upon the context, the Hebrew word ruach can be translated as "spirit," "wind" or "breath." Here in Genesis chapter 1, reference is to the third person of the Tri-unity who is described like that of a bird "brooding" on its nest.The Hebrew term translated as "hovering," or "moving" is מְרַחֶפֶת (pronounced m'rachephet) meaning "to flutter," or "brood." As such, the Spirit of God is pictured as a brooding bird conveying life and providing protection to its young.In a word, this is "regeneration" - the bringing about of life. In the context of creation, that which was initially formless, void and in darkness comes to life over the course of the six days of creation.Regeneration is a gift of the Spirit of God in two senses. It is a gift from God as well as a gift of God. This is to say regeneration is a work of God in us by him. Paul explains: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith -- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8).We do not save ourselves. He saves us.     Psalm 83 is an intriguing psalm. On the surface it is characterized as an imprecatory psalm in which Asaph calls upon God for vengeance by utterly destroying Israel's enemies. But upon deeper reflection, one notices that the psalm is arranged around the three major promises of the covenant God made with Abraham: an eternal nation, an eternal land, and eternal blessings upon both Israel and the nations.The psalmist, then, is not merely driven by a desire for vengeance and judgment. Rather, the psalmist's desire is for the promises of the Abrahamic covenant to come to fruition. But because of the nations' hatred for the Lord, and consequently, his people Israel, for those promises to be realized God must first deliver his people from all their enemies and do this in such a way that it leads the nations to repent of their sin and to seek the Lord.Asaph then closes his prayer on a hopeful note (vs.16-18).     Saturday, April 12, 2025, we held our yearly Messiah in the Passover Seder banquet at the Knollwood Country Club in Granada Hills, CA. We were truly blessed to have 260 attend and experience such a beautiful Passover with everyone who came.Our time of worship and praise was uplifting, joyous and celebrative. Everyone who came had such a wonderful time reflecting back on Israel's exodus from Egypt, learning of the Jewish traditions and seeing how Yeshua, our Passover Lamb, observed Passover with his disciples, fulfilling many of the Jewish traditions that are still practiced today.As our Passover seder developed, Rabbi Gary explained how the traditions the Jewish people practice were also observed by Yeshua and used by him to reveal himself as Israel's Messiah.This episode only includes Rabbi Gary's introduction to the Seder.     As we have already noted the Scriptures teach there are two phases or stages in Messiah's return. In the first stage Messiah will come "personally" (John 14:3; I Thessalonians 4:16), will come "for the believers" (John 14:3; I Thessalonians 4:17) and will come to the clouds (I Thessalonians 4:17).This first stage is referred to as the "rapture" of the believers. The term "rapture" is taken from the Latin translation of the Greek word αρπαζω (pronounced arpazo) meaning "to be caught up," or "snatched up."In the second stage Messiah will come "publicly" (Matthew 24:27; Revelation 1:7), he will come "with the believers" (Zechariah 14:5; Revelation 19:14) and will come to the earth (Zechariah 14:4; Acts 1:11). This second stage is Messiah's return to the earth to establish his kingdom and fulfill his promises to Israel.We note three things Yeshua teaches about his return at the rapture of the believers. He answers the questions regarding the time of the rapture, if there will be any signs of the rapture and what will happen at the rapture.     The Manner of Messiah's Coming - 03/29/25

    Rabbi Gary continues to consider the promise of Messiah's coming again. Acts 1:9-11 records the ascension of Messiah into the heavens. As Luke records the event, he focuses attention upon what the disciples saw. In verse 9 we read the phrases, "while they were looking," and "a cloud (the Shekinah glory) took Him up away from their sight."Then in verse 10 we find the phrase, "while they were staring into the sky," followed by the word "suddenly" which means "something to pay close attention to." And then "two men dressed in white," no doubt angels, ask the disciples a rhetorical question: "Why do you stand looking straight into the sky?" They go on to say that "this Yeshua" will return "in this way in which manner you saw him going into heaven" (vs.11).With the emphasis on what the disciples saw, coupled with the phrase, "in this way in which manner" which means "in the very same way," there can be no doubt that what is meant is nothing short of a visible and bodily return of Messiah. Not only are we to expect that Messiah will return visibly and bodily, but his return will also be personal.The Lord's coming will also be in two stages or phases.The first is his coming to the clouds when the believers "in Messiah" will be "caught up" to "meet the Lord in the air" (I Thessalonians 4:17). In essence this is his coming for his own. This coming of the Lord is popularly referred to as the "rapture" of the believers. The word "rapture" derived from the Latin word for the Greek "to be caught up."The second stage or phase of Messiah's coming is his coming to the earth to establish his kingdom, fulfill his promises to Israel and reign over the nations of the earth.Our Messiah is coming again and he's coming soon. Are you ready for him when he comes? If not, you can be. Simply acknowledge your need for him. Your need for the forgiveness of your sin. We have a special worship-in-dance presentation, we read through portions of the book of Esther in a special “Reader's Theater” format, and use our "groggers."One of the peculiarities of the book of Esther is that there is no explicit mention of the name of God, nor of God himself. While at the outset this might strike us as odd, upon further reflection it serves to reinforce one of the book's major points, the veracity or trustworthiness of God and his word.The omission of God's name and reference to God himself in the book of Esther underscores what God had foretold Moses would come upon His people: He would hide his presence from them as judgment for their sin.The events of Purim reveal that while Israel may forget their God, God will not forget Israel.     When first venturing into the study of the return of Messiah, one can be easily confused by the seemingly contradictory statements regarding Yeshua's second coming.There are statements that speak of Messiah coming for his own, as well as his coming visibly for the whole world to see.There are verses that speak of Messiah coming to judge the works of believers as well as those that refer to him  coming to judge humanity in general.There are passages that tell us that believers will be "caught up" into the clouds "to meet the Lord in the air" (I Thessalonians 4:17), a marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:9), a judgment upon the "beast" and false prophet (Revelation 19:20), a binding and ultimate judgment upon Satan (Revelation 20:1-2, 10), the establishment of the Messianic Kingdom (Revelation 20:4) and a final "white throne" judgment (Revelation 20:11-12).How are all these statements to be understood?     Teaching through the book of Zechariah at our Saturday Shabbat services has been an amazing experience for me. I've learned so much and our congregations were so excited to take a "deep dive" into the promise of our Messiah's return, the restoration of Israel and the establishment of the Messianic Kingdom.Over the next few weeks at our services I will be speaking on the return or second coming of Yeshua our Messiah. Many suppose that the promise of the return of Yeshua is of secondary concern; yet, interestingly, it is prominent in the Scriptures.It is said that there are some 300 prophecies of the first coming of Messiah in the Hebrew Scriptures, and nearly three times as many prophecies of Yeshua's second coming. Sometimes these second coming prophecies are inseparably connected to first coming prophecies, but not always.The Lord is coming and He's coming soon. If we need to repent and turn to Him we should, because He's coming soon. If we need to love Him (or perhaps love Him more) we should, because He's coming soon.     In the closing chapter of his book, Zechariah writes of the wonderful promise of the return of Yeshua the Messiah. He states, "...his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives which is before Jerusalem on the east..." (Zechariah 14:4).If "his feet" are to stand on the Mount of Olives then he must appear in an incarnate state. To be sure it will be his resurrected and glorified incarnate self, but it will be his incarnate self.One day soon, Yeshua's feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives once again.     Zechariah chapter 14 brings to a conclusion the final prophetic message concerning Jerusalem, the Jewish people and the nations as the prophet's book comes to a close.Beginning with 13:6 through the end of Zechariah's book, the prophet provides us with a summary of end-time events:First, he draws our attention to the rejection of Messiah which will result in his death (13:7a). Ultimately, Messiah's death is orchestrated by God Himself and is for the purpose of providing Israel with the atonement for sin (12:10; 13:1).Second, the nation of Israel will be dispersed (13:7b). This passage is first applied to the scattering of Yeshua's disciples in anticipation of the dispersion of the entire nation (Matthew 26:31; 23:37-39).Third, the prophet looks into the distant future from his day and mentions a period referred to as "the time of Jacob's trouble" (13:8-9; Jeremiah 30:7). This is the tribulation period that is spoken of in great detail in the book of Revelation.Fourth, the attempt by the false messiah to destroy the Jewish people will come to a head in the battle for Jerusalem (14:1-2).
