On July 5th, 2012, high school sophomore Skylar Neese would sneak out of her bedroom after her parents went to bed for the night. But the next day, Dave and Mary Neese would discover that their daughter never made it back. They looked to her best friends Shelia Eddy and Rachel Shoaf who'd been with her earlier in the night, but who'd claimed to have dropped her off a couple blocks from her apartment around midnight. Police check surveillance videos of the complex and discover Skylar had left again in a mysterious vehicle around 12:30am. Law enforcement concluded that Skylar was a runaway and attempted to get more details from her besties, but they hit wall after wall. The longer Skylar was gone, the more people suspected Skylar's best friends knew more than they were letting on. It wouldn't take long before one of them would crack and police would discover that the truth was much more horrifying than anticipated.
Shelia Eddy and Rachel Shoaf decided that they didn't want to be friend with Skylar Neese. Instead of telling her off or even ghosting her, they decided to do something that was a little more permanent. The expression “three’s a crowd” has a lot of truth, especially in female friendships. Two girls being friends worked, but add a third one and usually, one gets left out. When my daughter was a tween, she was the one who got pushed to the side when a third girl moved into the neighborhood and became friends with her best friend and her. I had my own experience as a teenager. Even though there were hurt feelings and arguments do to having three girls in a friendship, it didn’t result in murder as it did when Skylar Neese, Rachel Shoaf, and Sheila Eddy became friends.
