Thank you for tuning in to the newest episode of InflexionPoint Podcast. We are dedicated to the art of listening in authentic conversation. We challenge our audience to listen actively and intentionally for the purpose of critical self-reflection, in-depth perspective-taking, personal transformation, and ultimately social impact. The 2024 theme explores the Art of Community Conversations in today's climate of systemic and institutional racism, antiracism activation, Equity Diversity & Inclusion, and book banning.   Societal Racism: Resilience, Resistance, and Accountability In this episode Anita, Mavis, and Gail explore the topics of resilience, resistance and accountability in relation to Societal Racism. Societal racism is a type of racism based on a set of structural, institutional, historical, cultural, and interpersonal practices within a society that places one or more social or ethnic groups in a better position to succeed and disadvantages other groups so that disparities develop between the groups. Back in February, as a part of his bid to become an independent nominee for president, RFK Jr. made statements on the topic of resilience and racism. His audience was a room full of Black people. He describes the resilience he wants to give Black American youth: You can make kids resilient against racism with good education and Black business role models. Then the racism will “bounce off” Black children like they are “the Avengers” because “they will be immune to it.” He goes on to say that the way you do that is by giving them a great education so that they know that they have potential. The other thing is to give them business models, role models and opportunities within their own neighborhood.” A counter article from NewsOne see his remarks this way: “A 70-year-old [white male] whitesplaining to Black people that education is the key to making Black people 'immune' from racism.” The podcast discussion explores (a) how resliience is misunderstood when talking about racism; and (b) recognizing the value that resistance contribues to social justice, overcoming adversity, racism, and bias. The Institutional Antiracism and Accountability (IARA) Project evaluates efforts to move from words to action to accountability with its 6 key takeaways.

SISTERHOOD OF SWEAT - Motivation, Inspiration, Health, Wealth, Fitness, Authenticity, Confidence and Empowerment

On this week's Let It Rip Friday, we're actually sharing an interview with JuJu Chang before the release of the "20/20" episode.  They are now doing a special episode this Friday on the Menendez brothers. JuJu Chang is the correspondent at 9et/8ct on ABC! Juju Chang is a multiple Emmy Award-winning co-anchor of ABC News' “Nightline.” She also reports regularly for “Good Morning America” and “20/20.” Chang's decades of reporting converged in two hour-long prime time specials in 2021. She co-anchored an ABC News Live special “Stop The Hate: The Rise In Violence Against Asian Americans.” And after the mass shooting at three Asian-themed spas, Chang co-anchored and reported from the scene for an “ABC News 20/20” breaking news special “Murder In Atlanta”, which won a Front Page award in 2022. Chang has been recognized for her in-depth personal narratives set against the backdrop of pressing national and international news: from natural disasters to terrorism and racial equity. Her long-form storytelling includes a critical examination of the controversial “Remain in Mexico” immigration policy, told through the eyes of one pregnant woman and her family among the 60,000 asylum seekers camped for months along the Rio Grande. Chang's award-winning report “Trans and Targeted” on violence against transgender women of color across the country caps a series of her stories on LGBTQ+ issues. Chang won a GLAAD award for her story about Matthew Shepard's murder and the legacy his parents built in his honor.   Chang has covered major breaking news for decades for ABC News including extensive coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic: the science, the economic fallout, the racial disparities, the impact on hospital ICUs and essential workers. Chang has covered mass shootings and the myriad issues raised by shootings at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, at the concert in Las Vegas and at the Sandy Hook school in Newtown, Conn. She's reported on global climate issues including a trip through Guatemala examining the “dry corridor” impact on climate refugees profiling a desperate farming family faced with the stark choice of starvation or migration. Chang has consistently covered gender-based violence through Central Africa on the front lines against Boko Haram and #bringbackourgirls. She traveled to Honduras for “Femicide: the Untold War,” an eye-opening look at rampant violence against women. Chang has profiled newsmakers like Joe Biden and Oprah Winfrey as well as high-profile celebrities including Jamie Lynn Spears, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Her extensive feature reporting covers mental illness, opioid addictions and parenting dilemmas. A former news anchor for “Good Morning America,” Chang joined ABC News just after college as an entry-level desk assistant in 1987 and rose to become a producer for “World News Tonight.” After reporting for KGO-TV in San Francisco and the ABC News affiliate service NewsOne in Washington, she co-anchored the overnight show “World News Now.” Chang's work has been recognized with numerous awards, including multiple Emmys, Gracies, a DuPont, a Murrow and Peabody Awards. Born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in Northern California, Chang graduated with honors from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and communication. She is married to WNET president and CEO Neal Shapiro and, together, they have three sons. New York Amsterdam New has won over 30  Presitigious Awards for Oustanding Jounalism in the past few years! The Amsterdam News was founded on December 4, 1909, and is headquartered in the Harlem neighborhood of Upper Manhattan. The newspaper takes its name from its original location one block east of Amsterdam Avenue, at West 65th Street and Broadway.. An investment of US$10 in 1909 (equivalent to $339 in 2023) turned the Amsterdam News into one of New York's largest and most influential Black-owned-and-operated business institutions, and one of the nation's most prominent ethnic publications. It was later reported that James Henry Anderson published the first copy: "...with a dream in mind, $10 in his pocket, six sheets of paper and two pencils."The Amsterdam News was one of about 50 black-owned newspapers in the United States at the time it was founded. It was sold for 2 cents a copy (equivalent to $1 in 2023) from Anderson's home at 132 West 65th Street, in the San Juan Hill section of Manhattan's Upper West Side. With the spread of Blacks to Harlem and the growing success of the paper, Anderson moved the Amsterdam News uptown to 17 West 135th Street in 1910. In 1916, it moved to 2293 Seventh Avenue, and in 1938, it moved again, to 2271 Seventh Avenue. In the early 1940s, the paper relocated to its present headquarters at 2340 Eighth Avenue (also known in Harlem as Frederick Douglass Boulevard).  Subscribe @ amsterdamnews.comIn August 1982, Wilbert A. Tatum, chairman of the AmNews Corporation's board of directors and the paper's editor-in-chief, became publisher and chief executive officer. Under Tatum's leadership, the Amsterdam News broadened its editorial perspective, particularly in international affairs. This expanded thrust has produced considerable interest and readership from all sectors of the local, national and international communities. In July 1996, Tatum bought out the last remaining investor, putting the future of the paper firmly in the hands of the Tatum family. In December 1997, Tatum stepped down as publisher and editor-in-chief and passed the torch to his daughter, Elinor Ruth Tatum, who at the age of 26 became one of the youngest newspaper publishers in the United States. On this week's show SVS officially launches their Ultra Evolution Speakers, Amazon Echo Dot with LED Display is the best home automation device, and RTINGS.com is not impressed with the Formovie UST Projector. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: One-in-ten borrow streaming passwords Warner Sets Rollout Date for Max in Europe Mediacom Launches Xumo Stream Box TCL Adds NFL FAST Channel to TCLtv Plus Streaming Service Other: Apple TV+ Is the New HBO | WIRED SVS Launches Ultra Evolution Speakers We had Nick Brown and Smith Freeman on the live stream last Friday where we talked about the speakers and had a fun time. At that time we could not discuss all the details of their new Ultra Evolution speakers. Well this week SVS announced the availability and pricing. From the Press Release: At first glance, the most striking design feature is the acoustically centered time alignment cabinet architecture. A curve in the front baffle aligns the sound emanation point of the tweeter and each driver on a vertical plane ensuring sound from each driver arrives at a listener's ear in the exact same instant. This maximizes phase coherence for a more convincing and immersive soundstage with pinpoint accuracy and imaging. For the tower models specifically, midrange drivers and woofers positioned above and below the tweeter allow for seamless crossover blending to create an idealized “point-source” where sound flows from a single point in front of the speaker to optimize dispersion characteristics. The diamond-coated aluminum dome tweeter is also completely new for SVS. Using a modern  technology called vapor deposition, a layer of diamond carbon is grown on the surface of the aluminum dome to improve rigidity and critical acoustic properties. This breakthrough in material science raises the frequency response well beyond the limits of human hearing resulting in effortless, airy, and unveiled highs with no measurable distortion. It also pushes low frequency extension of the tweeter deeper for more seamless blending with the midrange. Details and pricing on the new models are included below.   Ultra Evolution Pinnacle: 3-way floorstanding speaker - $4,999.98/pair Ultra Evolution Titan: 3-way floorstanding speaker - $3,999.98/pair Ultra Evolution Tower: 3-way floorstanding speaker - $2,999.98/pair   Ultra Evolution Bookshelf: 2-way bookshelf speaker - $1,199.98/pair Ultra Evolution Nano: Compact 2-way bookshelf speaker - $899.98/pair Ultra Evolution Center: 3-way center channel speaker - $799.99 Ultra Elevation: Versatile home theater speaker with multi-angle wall/ceiling mounting bracket - $899.98/pair   Ultra Evolution Nano and Ultra Evolution Tower models will ship later in Q2. Finish options will be limited at launch. All models will soon be available in Piano Gloss Black, Piano Gloss White, and Premium Black Oak Wood Veneer finishes. All SVS products are backed by a five-year unconditional warranty, 45-day in-home trial, fast and free shipping, expert lifetime support, SoundPoints loyalty program, and all the guarantees of the SVS Customer Bill of Rights. Amazon Echo Dot with Clock Best Smart Home Device Overall? I was reading an article on Tom's Guide titled “The best smart home devices in 2024” and saw that they deemed the Amazon Echo Dot with Clock ($50) as the best smart home device overall. I wondered why? Once you dive in, you can see how they got there. From the article: The name says it all: this is an Echo Dot with a clever LED clock built in its face. However, this seemingly simple addition adds a ton of functionality to the Echo Dot, making an even better smart home companion. In fact, we wish more smart home companies took Amazon's cue and make minor — yet effective — enhancements to already excellent devices. I started searching online and found other reviewers saying the same thing. The Dot does everything you'd expect a device of this type to do but it's the LED that sets it apart from its competition. And if you read some of the 65,000 comments you'll see a lot of others agree! The LED can display a clock, timers, weather, song titles, and more.  So do you think a $50 smart speaker with an LED display is worthy of the title “Best Smart Home Device”? Here is what some owners are saying: Replaced my 20 year old alarm clock I was looking for an "Atomic" alarm clock which automatically sets the current time and found this. I bought this Echo Dot for our bedroom when the old alarm clock finally quit working. This is bright, lights up when you speak and shows the time in the dark. Love it! A great clock for any room RTINGS what are you doing? Over at AVS forum a thread caught our eye titled “RTINGS what are you doing?”. The author of the thread was not happy with a review of the  Formovie UST Projector the site had posted. RTINGS gave the projector a 7.1 out of 10 for movies. Reading through the thread it was clear that owners of the Formovie were upset. One poster thought it was possible that the RTINGS methodology may be suspect.  Question for our listeners. If you own a product and are happy with it do you seek out reviews? If they differ from your opinions does it bother you? If you remember in 2023 Projector Central did a laser projector showdown where the Formovie UST Projector won best Best Ultra Short Throw Projector. So it may have been in the AVS forum posters mind that the Formovie was a really good projector. Projector Central did not say best projector but best ultra short throw projector. Most people agree that UST projectors are not as good as long throw projectors but they do have the ability to be viewed in rooms with plenty of ambient light. RTINGS strictly looks at the measurements it takes objectively. When they did, the Formovie UST projector did not fare well. If you look at the scores from the shootout you see that it didn't do much  better than what RTINGS said it did. If RTINGS did a UST shootout the F ormovie may have been the best one. It's just not the best projector.

Drama is a normal part of the teenage years, but sometimes, this drama is taken too far. On July 5, 2012, 16-year-old Skylar Neese snuck out of her Morgantown, West Virginia home to go joyriding with her two "best friends", Shelia Eddy and Rachel Shoaf, but these two girls had other plans for how the night would unfold. After six long months of searching for Skylar ever since she snuck out in July, her remains were located in a wooded area in Greene County, Pennsylvania after Rachel Shoaf had a breakdown and confessed to the gruesome crime her and Shelia had committed. In this rebroadcast episode from 2021, Maria and Julio are joined by Jeanne Theoharis, distinguished professor of political science at Brooklyn College, historian, author and co-editor of “Julian Bond's Time To Teach: A History of the Southern Civil Rights Movement.” They talk about the legacy of activist, politician and educator Julian Bond and the lessons from his lectures - compiled in the new book - on the civil rights movement and what it teaches us about the fight for racial justice and radical change. ITT Staff Picks:  “Critics of Black Lives Matter have held up King as a foil to the movement's criticisms of law enforcement, but those are views that King himself shared,” writes Jeanne Theoharis in this 2021 essay for The Atlantic.  Patrick Darrington spoke to the authors of “Prophet of Discontent: Martin Luther King Jr. and the Critique of Racial Capitalism,” about why Dr. King should be firmly situated within the Black radical tradition, for Teen Vogue.  “We cannot all those who continue to harm our communities preach peace and patience while profiting off our collective misery. Honoring King and the beloved community demands more of each of us and our contributions to the greater good,” writes Anoa Changa for NewsOne.  Photo credit: The Associated Press

Julio is joined by Anjali Enjeti, author and co-founder of the Georgia chapter of They See Blue, and Anoa Changa, journalist and editor at NewsOne, to unpack the results of the Georgia Senate runoff election, and what it signals about party dynamics in the state and across the country. They get into voting issues in Georgia, including barriers to voting, the impact of organizing and voter outreach, and what we can expect in the next Senate session. ITT Staff Picks:  Anoa Changa writes about her experience trying to vote in the Georgia runoff election and how a new state law, SB 202, has impacted the voting process in this piece for NewsOne.  “Thus, not only do Southern voters face serious barriers to voting, but GOP gerrymandered congressional and state legislative districts have reduced the value of their votes,” writes Anjali Enjeti about the barriers that Southern voters, especially Black and brown voters, face at the polls in this op-ed for the Los Angeles Times.  Matthew Brown writes about the racist history of the Georgia runoff election system, and how it was created to “dilute Black voting power,” in this piece for The Washington Post.  Photo credit: AP Photo/Brynn Anderson, File
